I think you have a pretty good grasp of the concept of federalism….the simplified version being that whatever is not enumerated within the Constitution as Federal business defaults to the States.

Limited Gov’t….to me falls in line with the first questions answer…they are symbiotic so to speak.

Social safety net…for me we will support those who *can’t* support themselves…but those who *won’t* while still being able don’t need my money to get a leg up…they need my motivation.

National Defense…I am a Veteran too and have worked in Defense contracts until just recently…no reason to recuse yourself….so what if you happen to also benefit from you support for a strong defense.

Social issues…as long as no Constitutional rights are being violated..I say keep it at the lowest level giving the people who are most affected by it the power to influence it.

I don’t think we are that far apart…maybe just in the margins.

Do you believe in the concept of Federalism?

Yes — if Federalism is defined and applied as a central government and state government compact with enumerated responsibility. I do not agree with some definitions of Federalism that advocate an overarching Federal pre-eminence, nor do I agree with the notion that the State should have absolute sovereignty.

Do you believe in in a limited Fed Gov’t?

Yes, but “limited” as practically applied, is subjective. The devil is in the definition of those limits. The Constitution does set limits. but procedurally, the application of these limits has been argued since our founding. Ain’t that America!

Do you believe in a Social Safety Net for only the truly needy?

No — because “truly needy” is again, too subjective. I believe in a social obligation (safety net) to our young from conception to 18 yrs, to our elderly, those 65 and older, and to those that are disabled. Since everyone will pass through one or more of these constituencies at some point, then in the interim, if you are able-bodied, you are on your own.

Do you believe in a strong National Defense?

Yes — But…I recuse myself from going beyond that because I have a bias. I’m former military and have worked all my life in defense related companies.

Do you believe that Social Issues should be handled at the lowest possible level of Gov’t..(i.e. state, county)?

No — If those issues impinge on the protection of human equality and access.
Yes — If those issues are about the cultural interests of the community.

So, there it is.

I am proud of Carrie Prejean’s beauty and placement at the 2009 MISS USA pageant. I support Carrie’s right to express her personal beliefs even if they do not coincide with my own. I believe the subject of gay marriage deserves a great deal more conversation in order to heal the divide it has created.

As I alluded to in my comments above, I know plenty of people who are pro-life and pro-marriage and are diehard, and often self-described, liberals. For eight years we have had to endure a pro-life liberal who tried to pass himself off as a conservative in the White House while we conservatives tried to pass him off as one of us. And for all our loyalty we got MediCare Part D and bank bailouts. And, for that matter, a real live socialist in the White House: as Michelle Malkin says, “Bush pre-socialized America for Obama.” Why are we so willing to rush headlong into possibly making those same mistakes again?

I do think the “social issues” are a very important part of conservatism but they alone neither define nor make someone a conservative!
