GOP Officials just held a press conference here in St. Paul, Minnesota, to announce changes to the convention schedule in advance of Hurricane Gustav making landfall somewhere along the Gulf Coast. Sen. McCain has directed that all convention activities outside of necessary business be suspended until further notice.
RNC Chairman Mike Duncan said that the convention must meet tomorrow to constitute itself. But he said that the program will be restricted to gavelling the convention open, receiving the report of the Credentials Committee, establishing a quorum on the floor, electing officers, and adopting the rules of the convention. The session will then be adjourned with no further activity. All of the speakers set to address the convention tomorrow, including President Bush, Vice-President Cheney, and First Lady Laura Bush, have ben canceled.
McCain Campaign Manager Rick Davis said that there will be no “political rhetoric” as a part of tomorrow’s program, and that the campaign was heeding Sen. McCain’s call to “take off our Republican hats, and put on our American hats.” Asked about the possibility that Sen. McCain may not appear to accept the nomination at all, depending on the cours eof the storm, Davis would not speculate.
“The only thing I can tell you for sure is that there will be no activities besides necessary business tomorrow. We will make a decision about Tuesday’s program then.”

They should postpone the convention
paint_it_red (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 7:31PM EST (link)I know it would be a logistical nightmare, but McCain/Palin are going to lose a lot of airtime. I respect them for doing the right thing and not trying to hold the convention during this national disaster, but why not just push it back a week?

They are deprived of a whole day, at least, of trashing Bush and comparing him to McCain.
Meanwhile, the Republican Party gets to look responsible and adult-like in a time of crisis. That is, if there is a crisis.
They got what they asked for. Let’s see if they regret it.

Instead of telling people how much they care, the GOP gets to show it in action.
ConservaGeek (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 8:15PM EST (link)That’s probably why the Dems are frothing at the mouths more than usual. They’re probably wondering why Gustav didn’t make landfall last week so that the Obamamessiah could part the waters and steer the storm away from Nawlins.

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 8:45PM EST (link)This is and always has been about compassion for our fellow Americans.
Compassion, that word is the very genesis of all conservative values. I would therefore rather forego politics to ensure my neighbors are safe, secure and have all they need. Greek columns, football stadiums and pleasant sounding rhetoric are the accoutrements of weak, dispassionate vainglorious people.
It has been a meme of the left that Katrina was a disaster due to Republicans. The MSM and every liberal with media time have perpetrated that myth. But truth be told, it was inept state officials who were grossly negligent and bear the brunt of that inauspicious reflection. Mr. Jindal’s response has and will bear the hallmarks of our philosophy, I have no doubt.
John McCain and Sarah Palin will be the epitome of executive leadership. I am happy to leave politics for Democrats and their liege, because that’s what they do; laugh on planes about political implications, show up on Sunday TV making specious remarks and hope it turns out badly so blame becomes and issue. I can think of nothing more ignominious or distant from the heart of ordinary Americans.
“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

Here's how to kick off the convention
Ezekiel (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 9:33PM EST (link)Kick off the convention with a time of extended prayer meetings, right on the convention floor. Break in from time to time to give updates on what Governor Jindal is doing. Give people specifics on how to pray. Have Salvation Army officials on hand to give updates and lead prayer, too. Governor Palin could lead a session. Mike Huckabee could lead a session.
Areligious types like McCain could be shown keeping in contact with Jindal if they don’t feel comfortable praying.
THAT would be an appropriate way to start the convention, it would be the right thing to do and would show that we are a party that takes charge while having a strong faith.

Republican_Michigander (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 9:56PM EST (link)The poor response to Katrina killed the GOP in 2006. It made Bush look incompetent and was “the last straw” to a lot of people. Now I know about the MSM, Nagin (who would lose anywhere but New Orleans), Blanco (who was shown the door) and that stuff, but it doesn’t matter.
If the big convention was going on, the dems would have an ad with Katrina, and an ad of the GOP partying with a Nero fiddled while Rome burned message. That would be a possible game over.
The best thing McCain can do now is make the appearance of “This won’t happen on my watch.” Jindal can also help McCain here, not to mention his state.

But seriously...
BlackSoul Sunday, August 31st at 10:44PM EST (link)What watch is McCain on? Arizona isn’t exactly in the path of Gustav. Send Bush, fine. He’s got some stake in this. McCain? Not so much. There’s no need to turn this potential catastrophe into a campaign event. But I suppose he couldn’t just ignore it. Not with what happened three years ago. This is a case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
A Solution
BigBarb Sunday, August 31st at 11:25PM EST (link)Dear Mr. Mccain,
I have a suggestion on how to handle the Gustav situation. You (and everyone who was going to attend the republican convention, from represntatives to reporters) can go down to New Orleans to volunteer and help out after the damage from the storm. That is a whole army of volunteers who could make a difference and help out. Not only does it show you would handle things differently than george bush, but it would also do some good. Be the leader I know you are and take the week off from campainging (you were already going to take off from traveling and be in St. Paul)and insted spend it rebuilding homes and providing releif to those in need and affected by the storm. That would be a true maverick move.
I wish they could postpone it some
dld1717 (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 11:41PM EST (link)I wish they too could postpone it. Jindal, Bush, Laura, and so many other great speakers won’t attend now.
It really stinks Jindal can’t speak he so would of helped us.
Why could they not have this pushed back some and have VP speech Sunday night and McCain speak Monday night the 8th? I am willing to bet more people would watch on Sunday and Monday night anyways.
I feel awful for people in Gulf Coast it does stink but we are going to miss having our fun as the Dems did.
My suggestion:
NewEnglander (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 11:42PM EST (link)Mon: Cancel most events, have Mac and Palin available for interviews ONLY discussing the hurricane and relief efforts.
Tues: Make the convention into a telethon for fundraising for the relief efforts.
Wed: Get rid of all “minor” speeches. Have the keynote address, followed by Palin speaking live in St. Paul.
Thurs: Get rid of “minor” speeches, have Mac speak by satellite from New Orleans, with rescue workers behind him.
Undecideds only care about the Thurs. & Fri. speeches anyway. This scenario is a heckuva winner.
Oh, the irony
GerT Monday, September 1st at 12:10AM EST (link)Before and during the Democratic Convention, I remember hearing conservatives around Colorado were praying for rain on Obama. I guess God doesn’t roll that way.
Yes, and we all know that
Bill S (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 12:16AM EST (link)a rainstorm that causes a speech to be cancelled is equally as serious as a hurricane that kills people and destroys homes and businesses.
Liberals. Some day maybe they’ll get a clue.

GerT, the hurricane may actually break in the Republicans' favor
NewEnglander (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 12:18AM EST (link)The funny thing is, only one obscure pastor “prayed for rain” during Obama’s coronation.
And the irony is: Mac and the GOP are handling the hurricane situation superbly, garnering praise even from Dems like Lanny Davis.
Logistical impossibility is more like it
Neil Stevens (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 1:03AM EST (link)If we do not hold the convention when we’ve scheduled it, in some minimal fashion at least, we will not be able to gather the delegates and have a nominee.
I’d like to at least contest this election, so the convention must go on, at least a technical, minimal convention anyway.
