Concerned about a Shortage of Doctors? Then, Stop Killing Them

In 2004, according to the US Labor Department, there were approximately 884,974 doctors in the United States (Source). At that time, the 884,974 figure represented 0.29% of the overall population (i.e. less than 1% of the population).

According to the National Right to Life, from 1973 to 2006, there were an estimated 49,551,703 abortions performed in the United States.

So then, how many of those aborted babies could have grown up to be physicians? If you take the 2004 Labor Department figure of 0.29% and apply it to the total number of abortions (49.5 million), you get: 143,700. Is that the number of physicians that could have arisen out of the population of aborted children? Are we short that many doctors because of a pervasive culture of death . . . a culture that is so well embraced and championed by one of the major political parties (the Democrats) and their current standard bearer, fourth term abortion advocate, President Barack Obama?

Obviously, the answer is not so clean and neat. Many factors would have to go into an estimate of how many aborted babies could have potentially become physicians. There’s the racial, socio-economic, and gender distribution among doctors (for example, there are more White doctors than African American doctors) and the racial, socio-economic, and gender distribution among aborted babies (for example, the disproportionate rate of African American abortions compared to their makeup in the general population). So, suffice it to say that the number of potential physicians among the population of aborted children would probably not be as high as 143,700. But, at the same time, the figure isn’t zero either. The point here, using physicians as the specific example, is that abortion snuffs out human capital and therefore, to some real extent, human innovation and advancement.

What if then, after going through all the research and the math, we found that abortion prevented the contributions of only 100 potential doctors? Ask any individual physician and he will likely be able to cite several cases where he saved a life by catching something early (like a skin cancer) . . . that’s commonplace to the occupation. However, some physicians are also scientists whose life work is to discover new, life saving, life preserving medical innovations. There could have been one of those too in that low-ball estimate of 100 snuffed out future doctors! What have we lost thanks to our culture’s shortsighted selfishness? Truly, only God can answer that question, and only God can see which lives were negatively impacted because aborted baby Johnny never grew up to become Dr. John.

But doesn’t abortion prevent “unwanted” children?! How about all that suffering that could have happened if those aborted, unwanted children were born? How many neglected kids would have sat around in run down, inner city apartments eating chipping lead paint? What kind of trouble would a lead poisoned kid impose on society . . . welfare . . . prison . . . madness? Maybe even . . . music!

Argonne researchers recently discovered that the probable cause of Ludwig von Beethoven’s serious lifelong maladies was lead poisoning. Beethoven suffered terribly from poor digestion, abdominal pain, and depression; all of which are indicative of lead poisoning. Then, there was his deafness, which added insult to injury. Beethoven’s physical suffering was so great that he specifically mentioned in letters to his physicians that his remains were to be used to determine the cause of his illness, so that others may be spared the suffering which he endured throughout his adult life.

Yet, there was his music which brings joy to the world even to this day. Suffering and great contributions are often intertwined. Ludwig would be the first to tell you that.

In 49,551,703 abortions, what have we potentially lost? Only heaven truly knows the specifics, but the rest of us still slogging in the journey of life may safely assume that the deficit is both stunning and profound. The culture of death has, in effect, bitten off its nose to spite its face . . . a fitting visage for such a macabre fellow.

the correct answer is...

zero… Even if every aborted child had been born that’s how many additional doctors you would have.

Why you ask? Well its quite simple actually, colleges only admit a certain number of “doctors in training” every year.

During the late 80s/early 90s the AMA successfully lobbied Congress to both cap the level of funding granted to hospitals for residency programs and cap the number of medical schools opened in the US.

dave_in_atl, that's fascinating . . . I hadn't known that

mailloux (Diary) Tuesday, November 17th at 12:11PM EST (link)

I’d probably have to tweak my post to account for that artificial limit on the total number of physicians.

However, some of those aborted children would have certainly gone on to fill some of those limited medical school seats. Hence, we lost some unknown amount of doctors, even if the seats in medical school are controlled by the AMA and the overall total wouldn’t have changed.

Even more so, the theme of the post is true. Abortion depletes human resources. And, that affects the pace of innovation. I should have probably picked a different prime example other than physicians, but docs fit nicely into another hot topic of the day . . . nationalized health care.

Dave, thanks for the information. I really do appreciate the correction.

its pretty crazy :)

I was actually a bit shocked the first time I learned this… It makes one wonder how much we could reduce costs just by raising (removing?) the limit of doctors.

I guess this is just yet another example of government making things worse instead of better.

Agreed

Remove the limitations on quotas in medical schools and apply them to law schools!

Answer "zero" is wrong

Lammo (Diary) Wednesday, November 18th at 3:01AM EST (link)

because you assume that no additional medical schools would have been created in the face of increased demand. Your point about the AMA’s lobbying efforts only means they are complicit in the tragedy, travesty and holocaust that is abortion in this country. Makes me wonder which is the chicken and which is the egg – - was the cap on med school seats due to a reduction in demand brought about by abortion? Did the medical establishment see a reduction in high quality applicants because so many of the best potential candidates had been aborted? With the population artificially reduced by nearly 50 million they had to artificially limit the number of doctors, didn’t they?

FWIW – - Medical schools will respond to demand and expand – - the University of Washington is currently planning to expand it’s school by opening a full branch on the dry side of the state.

Yes we have lost some great minds due to abortion its almost a guarantee, but I would say the opposite is also true…. How many rapists, murders, and democrats (ok the last one probably does not belong) were never born because someone decided to abort them?

Here is the point

dave_in_atl, it's really not equivalent

mailloux (Diary) Tuesday, November 17th at 1:10PM EST (link)

A grave evil such as abortion causes more grave evil than any possible coincidental good. Abortion has not just destroyed the unborn en masse, but it has also destroyed women and families and decimated communities (African American communities, for example). Snuffing out the great minds is just one element of the evil consequences of abortion.

might have come out wrong...

dave_in_atl (Diary) Tuesday, November 17th at 1:16PM EST (link)

I was not intending to justify abortion with my comment, just pointing out that not every aborted baby was going to turn out to be the next “fill in the blank with something good”.

We don’t know if the next aborted baby would have been another Bach, or Hitler. All we know is a life has been snuffed out before it even began.

dave_in_atl, this form of communication does have its inherent problems . . .

mailloux (Diary) Tuesday, November 17th at 1:24PM EST (link)

I too have written things countless times that communicated something that I didn’t intend . . . so, I know the feeling!

You’re right, we mere humans don’t know what the aborted would have been. Jack Savage (in a comment above) said it well though when he reminded us that God had a plan for each and every one of them and that plan, if really lived by that person, would have been very good indeed.

Yes Dave, there can be individuals that turn out evil...

penguin2 (Diary) Tuesday, November 17th at 1:26PM EST (link)

vs. “good,” but here’s another perspective; a society that kills its infants and believes it is has the right to do so, also has far greater moral ills confronting it. Thus, the deterioration of morality and the inhumanity of such a culture, actually has, IMO, the potential for creating more “lost souls.”

Roe v Wade was passed in 1973, many years before the “caps” on medical schools. And as others pointed out, the potential for all other fields certainly has been impacted, including the survival of society itself. Just having a family is a reasonable and honorable endeavor. A culture that does not value life, will die out.

Thanks for reading, commenting with great honesty, and reco’ing a diary that doesn’t completely coincide with your beliefs.

I don’t know if you’re a religious fellow or not, but as a religious fellow myself, I often do wonder what God had in store for aborted children before man killed them . . . even something as simple as the smile of an infant (like my daughter who is almost 12 months old) has provided me with more joy than I can imagine. She has already, before any career she may choose, made a gigantic contribution to both my immediate and extended family. Life and love are also inextricably intertwined.

I hate the way people judge what value others have. We defend life because it’s life, but the judging that goes on amoung both sides annoys me greatly. Besides those that are killed and that awfulness, the parents and siblings are missing out on so much joy.

I don’t know how religious I am but I’ve stuck with my Christian faith all my life. I don’t tag myself as pro-life because I believe most everyone that is human can claim that ground.

I do believe that conception is God’s plan and every conceived person needs the opportunity to fulfill His plan, as I perceive it. and as I live my life.

I think that squares with my liberal views, after all, how much more bleeding heart can one be. Any baby born is a blessing and holds infinite potential.

I'm not sure what

mom2oneson (Diary) Tuesday, November 17th at 2:29PM EST (link)

a thesis is but I don’t agree with some of the diary either. I think suffering should never be glamorized and I don’t think that is what mailoux was doing and I know Mailous is not like that though. OTOH I don’t care what good music or contributions to society come from it, it’s not good when vulnerable people suffer through no choice of their own and we should do all we can to alleviate it. Suffering is real and horrible, and it’s magnified for a child without life experience.

I agree with what society is missing out on the lives that abortion (and IMO birth control) takes. It has nothing to do with the abortion and birth control argument though, that isn’t the basis for being against it. I read the story of Fleming, there was a signifant age different between his parents and his father died when he was a young child. I thought about how today she would be the gossip and scorn of the church ladies for having babies with him.

mom2oneson,

mailloux (Diary) Tuesday, November 17th at 2:49PM EST (link)

You’re right; the diary is not trying to glamorize suffering. I mentioned the Beethoven example to show that despite suffering (which, as humans we all experience to one degree or another), greatness can rise like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes. The prevention of suffering among the unborn is often used as a Utilitarian argument for abortion . . . it’s the old let’s spare the “unwanted” children future suffering theme. The diary wasn’t intended to diminish the seriousness of human pain. The diary’s inclusion of Beethoven was meant to show the folly justifying abortion with the argument of sparing future suffering.

Thanks for reading, leaving thought provoking comments, and the reco too.

Relative Value of Life

kicker Friday, November 20th at 9:41PM EST (link)

The post raises a valid point in that abortion “wastes” human potential. But even more importantly, many theories of social/cultural progress postulate that it is the critical few who are responsible for most progress. In other words, it isn’t the fact that 1MM babies were killed, but rather that a potential Einstein, MLK, or Reagan that could have substantively advanced humanity never survived to reach their potential.

The next time Black leaders decry the lack of social/economic progress, it would be cruel, but accurate, to point out to them that, in all likelyhood, Liberals have exterminated the babies that would have grown to be the next MLK, Douglas, or Thomas.
