Some scientific research is stupid and some scientific research is plainly evil. A new study coming out of Oregon State University (OSU) manages to be both stupid and evil. Some statisticians at OSU crunched some numbers and determined that each new bun that comes out of the oven adds 9,441 metric tons of carbon dioxide to the carbon legacy of an average parent. Furthermore (Surprise!), Americans are the biggest offenders. A new baby in the good Old US-of-A will belch out more carbon dioxide than a new baby in India . . . lower mortality rates, Big Macs, etc.
Notice too that the term “carbon footprint” has apparently evolved and expanded into “carbon legacy!” Gaia help us, we humans are far more evil than we could have ever realized! My four kids mean that my wife and I have ballooned our carbon legacy by 37,764 metric tons of carbon dioxide . . . and that’s not even taking into account future grandchildren or great grandchildren or etcetera, etcetera . . . you get the point. Then, what if my wife and I throw caution (and Gaia) to the wind and have a (GASP!) fifth child?! Oh, the humanity environment!
That’s why the helpful green statisticians at OSU are recommending that we fatso, carbon belching Americans all plan to have one less child. Mind you, they don’t go into detail on how to do that. In fact, they plainly stated that they aren’t necessarily suggesting China-like population controls and they didn’t even broach the topic of skipping one’s next romantic rendezvous or other techniques favored (nay loved!) by liberal environmentalists, like abortion. They’re just giving a helpful nudge-nudge, say no more type of suggestion . . . you know, think of Gaia before you . . .
My response to the good, green Professor Paul Murtaugh of OSU, one of the lead statisticians in the OSU study?
Go pound sand. The more kids, the better. Hell, I like babies a lot. Gaia will just have to adjust. After all, we are the stewards of the earth and have been given dominion over it. In my opinion, it’s not Gaia first and people second. Professor Murtaugh has it bass-ackward.
So, Professor Paul, I’ll leave you with a dedication to your green stupidity; every time one of my little carbon bombs emits an embarrassing burst of greenhouse gas, I’ll think to myself, “That one’s for you, Professor Murtaugh.” And, from my keyboard to God’s ear, I pray that my wife and I are perhaps blessed with more children and many, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. May we be knee deep in beautiful little carbon bombs. Amen!

TxTess (Diary) Wednesday, August 5th at 1:11PM EST (link)I love my nephews. I can’t even imagine what the loss of any of them would do to our family. Just a quick piece of advise though, be careful and don’t name children a verb, say like “Chase”. You will then have to act on that verb. It takes 2 adults at a time to keep track of my Chase and he’s only 6. Heaven help us when he’s a teen.
Awesome post as always!

TxTess,
mailloux (Diary) Thursday, August 6th at 11:06AM EST (link)Chase is an excellent name for the child of a police officer. If he someday follows in the footsteps of his father and becomes a police officer, may he chase and apprehend many a bad guy (and do so safely!).
I’m a Catholic, so I have a habit of thinking about patron saints. I believe the patron saint of police officers is none other than the Archangel St. Michael. So, may St. Michael, by the power of God, watch over you and your family and protect you and your family from evil.

mailloux (Diary) Thursday, August 6th at 11:34AM EST (link)You’re little carbon bombs from Russia (and God Bless you, your wife, and children! Adoption is a wonderful thing. My wife and I are looking over options between domestic adoption and international) would likely be considered a carbon debit. The lives of your children will be enhanced here in the USA and very likely a lot longer than if they lived as orphans in Russia. Hence, more carbon emissions! The enviros are probably shaking their heads and apologizing to old growth trees for your thoughtless behavior! God, on the other hand, is smiling down on your beautiful family.

aesthete (Diary) Wednesday, August 5th at 9:09PM EST (link)Their ideas may have been fashionable at a time when little was known about the processes that create wealth and the like, but now that we have some knowledge about the way that humans solve problems, there’s no better answer than to say “go pound some sand”, as you put it. Our ability to fix our environmental messes (which aren’t even particularly large, when put into perspective) isn’t static, and some bright kid will divine a way to make our technology even more environmentally friendly and less costly.

mailloux (Diary) Thursday, August 6th at 1:46PM EST (link)I wonder what the estimate of doctors or scientists lost to abortion is? What then is the probability that a discovery of some importance is lost or delayed due to abortion? After all, we voluntarily reduce our human capital through abortion. What have we potentially lost in terms of innovations/inventions by engaging in such a mass slaughter?
Some statistician should work on that one . . . maybe I’ll even have a whack at it. My MS is in Quantitative Methods (i.e. statistics) and I’m currently employed as an applied statistician of sorts (a policy analyst for a university . . . aka “institutional research”).

So what do you and your wife say
Uma Richie (Diary) Wednesday, August 5th at 9:57PM EST (link)when you strangers comment on your family size? My brood is a near replica of yours (BBGG/same age range). On virtually every outing I hear, “Wow, you have your hands full.”
I usually respond with words expressing love for my children, joy in raising them, and gratitude for the blessing that they are, but I am looking for something short, clever and memorable that conveys the same idea. I figure that if I say the right thing, I can educate at least one person every day on the goodness of large families.
Uma_Richie, my wife and I get the same sort of comments . . .
mailloux (Diary) Thursday, August 6th at 10:09AM EST (link)as do some of our friends. One family we know (the Godparents of our 2 year old) have 8 kids and another family (they run a dairy farm) have 13. Compared to them, my wife and I have a small family!
To those who remark on our 4 kids with surprise (the old, “Four! Isn’t 2 more than enough” sort of look), I usually say something along the lines of:
“Well you know, kids are a lot like chips . . . you just can’t have one.”
If they push further, then I’ll go on about the challenges and the joys and remind them that the most worthwhile endeavors in life are the ones where we behave most selflessly, and children require just that kind of approach.
If that fails to make an impact and if I sense the person is somewhat anti-child, especially if I detect liberal reasons for being anti-child (like environmental ones), I’ll jokingly say:
“When I’m an old and gray, I’m banking on my kids taking better care of me than an underpaid aid in some nursing home.”
Anyhow, that’s some of my responses. I think it’s good to pepper them with some humor and snark depending on the audience (i.e. some folks ask the question as an indirect condemnation of having many kids . . . these are the ones where a little snark is warranted, if not helpful).
Uma, thanks for reading my post!

Mailloux, my only regret that I have ever had about children...
penguin2 (Diary) Thursday, August 6th at 11:20AM EST (link)was that I could not have more. My immediate reaction to your post last night, was to tell you I hope you have another one. I think it is great. We were Very Blessed to have had my girl and twin boys. Disastrous complications almost took their lives and mine both times. God gave me three miracle babies and no one can tell me otherwise.
Of course, they’ll still probably put me in a nursing home…but I did the best I could.

I bet you are glad you didn’t have more
One is enough
Alll you need is one
I had a second trimester loss after my son was born and after sharing with someone they said they was a blessing what would you do with two?
sigh sigh sigh
I do LOL at some of the humor responses moms of large families say but wouldn’t be appropriate to type here!
When my son was little, I worked with a girl that would bring her kids over a lot, they were all mixed race and just gorgeous (not pale like me!), when we would go out SOOO many people said How many more are you going to have? ugh!! Four beautiful happy smiling kids under four years old and that is what they think to say
They are anti-family, after the anti-child statements when they know I’m single they start with the you don’t need a man comments. Why do they hate families so much, I don’t get it. I don’t see how people have lost so much respect for women in general to even comment on something so personal like future child bearing. I think it all ties in some how, the whole lack of respect.
Penguin, I have twin boys too.
