Compare and contrast . . . it’s always been a useful analytical tool. So useful, as a matter of fact, it’s introduced in early childhood. Many a toddler book is about how things can be alike or opposite.
Barack Obama, PETA, and Gianna Molla offer a perfect contrast. You know, it’s one of those 180 degree ones.
Take PETA first. They are the infamously goofy “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.” They’re well known for grabbing at publicity with ridiculous stunts and their ranks are even peppered with several Hollywood celebrities. Rank opportunists, they’ve released a statement concerning a fly that was swatted by Barack Obama during a recent CNBC interview. Obama even bragged up the catch and kill saying:
“That was pretty impressive, wasn’t it? I got the sucker”
PETA’s response was to send Obama a “Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher,” which is able to capture bugs unharmed, allowing the owner of the trap to “humanely” release the bugs outside. PETA accompanied the gift with the following statement:
“We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals.” (Bruce Friedrich, PETA Spokesman)
In addition to the soft admonishment of Obama, PETA also threw in a compliment as well. PETA praised Obama’s senate voting record on animal rights and his willingness to speak out against animal abuse.
Animals have a friend in Obama, and perhaps after some encouragement from PETA, bugs too may find solace and compassion from the current administration.
But, as for you babies? “Fogetaboutit,” as some of my Italian relatives might put it. Obama, of course, is infamous for his extreme voting record in defense of abortion in all 4 trimesters . . . the fourth trimester referring to his odious votes against the Illinois Born Alive Infant Act.
Enter now, in contrast, Gianna Molla. She was an Italian pediatrician and mother that died way back in 1962. A very lively lady, she was an avid skier and mountaineer, and was most especially known for her great charity. The aforementioned facets of her life, in and of themselves, are certainly not enough to merit any sort of notoriety. There are plenty of doctors and mountain climbers that live good lives and die in obscurity. What Gianna Molla is known for and why she makes such a stunning contrast to Obama and PETA is her living out of one of Jesus Christ’s most famous statements. Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (John 3:15).” Gianna Molla did exactly that for her unborn child.
In September 1961, Gianna Molla found out that her fourth pregnancy was complicated by a fibroma in her uterus. Instead of ending the pregnancy to safeguard her own life, she pleaded with her doctors to protect the life of her unborn child, even above that of her own life. In April 1962, upon the impending birth of her child, she instructed her doctors, saying:
“If you must decide between me and the child, do not hesitate: choose the child – I insist on it. Save him.”
On April 21, 1962, Gianna Emanuela was born. Her mother, Gianna Molla, died 7 days later on April 28, 1962 due to complications of her risky pregnancy and child birth . . . “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” On Calvary, Jesus Christ did just that. Nearly 2000 years later, Gianna Molla imitated Christ.
Pope Paul VI put it well when, in 1973, he said of Gianna Molla:
“A young mother from the diocese of Milan, who, to give life to her daughter, sacrificed her own, with conscious immolation”
On April 24, 1994, Pope John Paul II beatified Gianna Molla. She is now recognized as Saint Gianna Molla, doctor, wife, mother, and ultimate imitator of Christ.
Barack Obama, PETA, and Gianna Molla . . . now there’s a stunning contrast.

Even more impressively, Saint Gianna was cannonized just 10 years later (2004)
civil truth (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 12:28PM EST (link)The story gets more impressive as I read more about her life and the uniqueness of her elevation to Sainthood. It brings tears to my eyes

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. mailloux (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 12:32PM EST (link)her canonization in the diary as well. Ten years from beatification to canonization is, as you stated, very impressive . . . especially if one understands and appreciates what it takes to be canonized.
Thanks the additions!

The first time I've heard this story
Cheryl (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 12:46AM EST (link)and it was lovely, thank you so much. I’m more often than not reminded of the emphasis put on the life of a critter (living in the bay area of CA) and lack of that of it for an unborn child and I just can’t make any sense of it.

“The administrative state has inserted its big paws into our houses, from the toilet bowl to the light socket. Now if it would just stretch those paws from the one to the other at the same time, we might begin to recapture the spirit of ’76.” –Scott Johnson, Powerlineblog.com
Cheryl, thanks and . . .
mailloux (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 10:31AM EST (link)I couldn’t agree more about the inconsistency between so much care for the life of a critter and not caring a whit about the life of an unborn infant. It borders on schizophrenic.
By the way, I live near (well 60 miles or so) the Berkeley of the Midwest, Madison, WI. So, I frequently encounter vegan members of PETA who lambaste anyone who dares refer to their pet as anything less than an animal companion . . . don’t get me wrong. I love my old dog and care for him well, but he’s not a human being and humans trump animals. For example, when a tornado warning comes along, it’s humans to the basement first, then, time permitting, I look for the pets. PETA be damned.
Thank you for reading and commenting!

streiff,
mailloux (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 2:03PM EST (link)Thank you for promoting one of my diaries to the front page. It is quite a humbling honor.
I’ve long been a reader of RedState, but only signed up for an account and started posting after the election of BO . . . elections like that one tend to get folks off the sidelines and into the fight. It certainly did so for me.
So, for a diary of mine to appear even just once on the front page of my favorite political website is a pretty good reason to smile.
Thanks again.

Choice...
NightTwister (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 2:22PM EST (link)Finally, a true example of choice. While in this case I wouldn’t begrudge the woman that chose a different way, it most certainly needs to be recognized that here’s a woman who actually made a real choice with her body.
The pro-abortion crowd would obviously decry such a choice, but that’s because they’ve never been pro-choice in the first place.

Well done, mailloux
EvanWeeks (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 4:15PM EST (link)A point that deserves to be made and drove home is that not only would the pro-death culture disapprove of her sacrifice, but they would likely lobby to remove her right to choose that sacrifice.

EvanWeeks,
mailloux (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 10:39AM EST (link)I agree. I suspect as well that the pro-abortion crowd would label her a fool, but to quote an apt piece of Scripture: “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” (I Corinthians 1:25). It’s clear, then who the fools are.

The hypocrisy of the left on this is almost stunning
Lammo (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 4:42PM EST (link)You can have your choice as long as it’s the same as our choice. Oh, and you can’t harm any creature we decide is worth protecting – - any other creature is fair game, including human babies. Great job as always Mark. Thanks for helping to spread the story of St. Gianna (which, BTW, is the name of the pro-life group at my parish).

Laughing maintains the sanity. I get plenty of opportunities to speak with liberals and have almost never failed to discern gross inconsistencies in their thinking and sometimes outright hypocrisy (especially when speaking of moral and cultural issues). The hypocrisy doesn’t really surprise me. After all, if one’s conscience is based almost entirely on emotion, then hypocrisy and inconsistency are sure consequences.
Thanks for reading and for your too kind comments.
And, you couldn’t have a better advocate for your pro-life group than St. Gianna! Please keep up your most excellent work!

Thanks for this great diary about St. Gianna
WarEagle01 (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 6:22PM EST (link)Her prayer is one of my favorites:
Jesus, I promise You to submit myself to all that You permit to befall me,
make me only know Your will.
My most sweet Jesus, infinitely merciful God, most tender Father of souls,
and in a particular way of the most weak, most miserable, most infirm
which You carry with special tenderness between Your divine arms,
I come to You to ask You, through the love and merits of Your Sacred Heart,
the grace to comprehend and to do always Your holy will,
the grace to confide in You,
the grace to rest securely through time and eternity in Your loving divine arms.

WarEagle01, that prayer is beautiful and says quite a lot . . .

Mailloux, Such an incredible and inspiring story.
penguin2 (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 6:48PM EST (link)I need to get a prayer card of hers.
The compare and contrast of your diary is excellent, but so sad too. It is clear by Obama’s policies, how little he values human life. Unfortunately, he is a representative sample of so many others…
Congratulations on the Front Page! As you can tell by how many people recommend your diaries, even if they don’t comment, your writings are incredibly meaningful to us. You seem to be such a humble person, but we are all fortunate to have you with us and for us at Redstate.

penguin2, George Tiller and Gianna Molla . . .
mailloux (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 11:21AM EST (link)about as opposite as they come. It’s unfortunate that an average ‘man on the street’ has probably never heard of Gianna Molla, but is likely aware of George Tiller. And, thanks to favorable media treatment, that average man on the street may even harbor some form of admiration for Tiller. We have our work cut out for us, eh?
Thank you for reading and for your kind comments. I’m grateful for the privilege of posting on RedState and appreciate fellow RedState diarists and commentators. This is a fine community that I believe will make a difference in our culture and politics.
