[CORRECTION: Thanks to a helpful commentator to this post (see below), I would like to set the record straight on the exact time frame for "Earth Hour". It is NOT 7:30 - 8:30 pm. According to the Earth Hour website (which ironically I linked to in the post), the correct time is 8:30 - 9:30 pm. My apologies for not dotting my i's and crossing my t's before posting. I looked at the Earth Hour website before writing the post, but for some odd reason got 7:30 - 8:30 pm stuck in my head.]
No, I’ve not developed a sudden Obama-esque messianic complex. With respect to light, I’m speaking of the incandescent variety developed by the famous inventor, Thomas Edison.
Between 7:30pm and 8:30pm on March 28, I will throw financial caution to the wind and turn on as many of my home’s lights and electrical appliances as possible. I might even break out a string or two of blinking Christmas lights. I’ll put on a DVD for the kids, pop some popcorn in the microwave, do a load of laundry, and . . . wait for it . . . set the thermostat to 73 degrees! (Gasp!).
Am I only doing my part to stimulate the economy (at least the energy sector)? No, normally I’m actually a bit stingy with the electricity. If no one is occupying a room, then it shouldn’t be lit up. I’m constantly preaching this to my children, calling one or another of them in to turn off a light that he or she left on. Electricity costs money. My usage strives to be conservative and I’ve got no interest in making any extra donations to my local energy provider.
My interest is political in nature. On Saturday March 28th, 2009 . . . between 7:30pm and 8:30pm . . . I’ll be voting with light switches and appliances. My vote will be against the maniacal, oppressive, and utterly divorced from reality lunacy of Global Warming. You see, “EarthHour.org” wants you to vote for the Earth and against Global Warming by turning off all your lights at the designated hour. I plan to do the opposite and vote for Anthropomorphic Global Warming only because I know it’s a crock . . . Earth won’t be taking any hurt by my turning on a few extra lights.
This is Earth Hour’s 3rd year of engaging in this kind of silliness. This exercise in futility and quasi-religious fervor began in Sydney, Australia in 2007. It expanded to several worldwide locations in 2008, including San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge (now that really doesn’t surprise you, does it?). In 2009, Earth Hour would like to attain 1 billion votes (i.e. dupes who want to sit around in the dark for an hour).
Without any real method of counting those votes, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) plans to present the vote totals in this little global election between the Earth and Global Warming to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. At this particular meeting, by the way, leaders will be fashioning another equally, or more excessively, stupid document to replace the Kyoto Protocol.
So, if you too have the basic faculties of reason to separate fact from fiction (and fraud), then I invite you to join me in voting for sanity over the hysteria of Anthropomorphic Global Warming. Go ahead . . . enjoy! Turn ON those lights on March 28 between 7:30pm and 8:30pm (your local time).
If people really want to live in the dark, then move to North Korea.

73 degrees?
Menlo (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 1:15PM EST (link)Is that heat or air? If I am using the heater (usually whenever it is below the70′s for daytime highs), it NEVER has gone or will go below 74. Plus, I am within a foot of my 1500W space heater most of the day!
I usually conserve lights just because it is such a pain to replace the bulbs on the high ceilings in the kitchen and living room. Standing on that high ladder to replace them terrifies me, and I have to pay someone to come put them up. I’ve broken some before, and they will fly over the whole house.
I’m also trying to save as many bulbs as I can before they are no longer sold. Fortunately, I only use the 40W bulbs with my sensitive eyes, so I should have a few more years.

Menlo,
mailloux (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 1:41PM EST (link)It’s heat . . . I live in Wisconsin.
The only way to get our old farm house above 72 is with our wood furnace in the basement. If you get that baby cranking, we can get it up to about 75 (once we even got to 77). We keep our oil furnace at a max of 69 for budget purposes only.
I’d dread the day if only those energy saving fluorescent bulbs were available. They throw off an ungodly light. It gives me a headache. There’ll probably be a black market for regular light bulbs . . . kind of reminds me of an old Seinfeld episode about a black market for high flow shower heads.

Menlo (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 2:40PM EST (link)Unless someone invents something revolutionary (highly unlikely), the dangerous Chinese-made swirls will be all that is there in a few years (number of years is based on the wattage). The ban was passed by wide margins and signed by Bush at the beginning of last year.
Jane Harman could not control a delusional “we can do more” rant as she moved to propose the bans for each available bulb wattage. I think the chemicals in those Chinese-made light swirls went into her head.
Whatever happens, I’ve already made it a point to use candles if I can’t access light bulbs. I’m proud to say I’ve never so much as touched one those swirls, and I never will, even if my life depends on it.
I don’t know about the black market unless people can make them in their own homes. They are scheduled to be banned sooner in most of the rest of the world.
Wisconsin may as well be Pluto with my extreme cold intolerance. Even in the Texas summer, I need a heavy winter coat just to go in most air-conditioned buildings.

Achance (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 4:25PM EST (link)Here’s the lyrics:
We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead based paint
No child proof lids no seat belts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are
We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside
It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world
School always started the same every day
The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray
Not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right
It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world
Bridge
No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose
And every Sunday, all the stores were closed
It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world
In Vino Veritas

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 3:23PM EST (link)So this is an actual thing, eh ?
I heard about this the other day on Glenn Beck’s show. I thought he and Stu were joking about it….. at least that’s all they were doing on the air – nailing it to the cross, so to speak.
So then, on 28 March, every single light and appliance in my home will be on full-bore for the hour. Air conditioner, washer & dryer, ceiling fans, all three televisions and the audio systems tied into ‘em. I may leave my refrigerator door open for a good amount of time so the compressor stays on.
The oven – it’s electric…… Ooooooh: I’ll bake a cheesecake – so that means I’ll be using my big-motor Kitchen Aid stand mixer too.
I’ll even make enough microwave popcorn for the entire subdivision where I live.
Makes me want to go out and buy some stuff just to plug it all in and let ‘em rip.
PS………….. I have enough incandescent light bulbs to last a few decades. I stocked up on the “Reveal” bulbs when they were on sale about 6 months ago. Fantastic soft but really bright light from those things.
Cheers !

Achance (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 4:09PM EST (link)I hate all those street lights and the codes keep calling for more and more. We just built a new overpass here, the first “big road” construction in many years. I swear, they put so many lights on that thing that I’m confident you can see it from Mars.
I like it out on the water in what most would call the “pitch black dark.” As long as you don’t have any artificial light to mess up your night vision, you can see perfectly well even on a moonless night down to about 7/10s cloud; the only thing that messes you up is lights on the shore. Below 7/10s, all you can see is lights, but you should be going slow, so that’s about all you need to see. If it gets too dark and thick, I turn on the radar, but using the lighted display of the radar means you’re completely dependent on the radar since it messes up your night vision. Most chartplotters have a very dark colored “night” palette that will save your night vision.

So, are we supposed to do this
Lammo (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 4:21PM EST (link)all at the same time together, adjusting for time zones, or is supposed to sweep across the zones an hour at a time? Preferrably the latter because I don’t think too many will people will notice my lights at 4:30 pm Pacific Daylight Time.
Don’t be so open minded that your brains fall out. (John Corapi, The Black Sheep Dog)
Lammo, it doesn't appear to be coordinated . . .
mailloux (Diary) Wednesday, March 25th at 11:36AM EST (link)to occur at the same time. From looking at Earth Hour’s website, I gather that you turn off (or better yet, ON) your lights at the designated time in your own time zone. In other words, 7:30 to 8:30 Pacific Daylight Time . . . for me, it’s Central Time.

Pictures of our Light-a thon would be fun.
Maggie_in_Indiana (Diary) Wednesday, March 25th at 9:20AM EST (link)I have 36 windows,15 are floor to cieling,When all the lights are on folks on main street slow down and stare. I’ll sit in the 6 by 8 picture window on the 2nd floor reading Reagans Greatest Speeches (my favorite book) Oh and don’t forget the flood lights and the carriage house and the guest house and the tool shed, and maybe just for good measure the red, white and blue string we use on the 4th. Yeah this could be fun.

Count me in!!
Kenny Wednesday, March 25th at 12:48PM EST (link)I will have all of my lights on, and will even take it a step further. I will start all of my vehicles and let them idle in the driveway for the hour. I will gas up the lawnmower, snowblower, leafblower and every other gas burning device I have and let them all idle in the driveway along with my truck, car, ATV and motorcycle. The libs around here should love me.

Actus Wednesday, March 25th at 3:19PM EST (link)Are you serious about this, or is this all tongue-in-cheek? Because if you’re serious, it strikes me as biting off your nose to spite your face…
I don’t think this group is measuring a drop in energy usage, so your extra usage isn’t really counteracting anything. And I doubt there will be enough people actually doing this for your brightly lit house to really be noticed. No one I’ve talked to has any idea about this day, and it’s coming right up, and I’m in liberal California.
The only thing I can see this doing is costing you a little extra money and wasting a little extra energy.
But if I’ve missed the joke, I apologize! =)
Actus, visit the Earth Hour website and judge for yourself
mailloux (Diary) Wednesday, March 25th at 3:41PM EST (link)On my side of things, as a conservative, there are some tongue-in-cheek elements to my post. But, I’m doing what Earth Hour is recommending. I’m voting, but I’m voting for Global Warming. Why would I do that? Because I’m convinced that AGW does not exist. Earth Hour is convinced it does exist as do the folks gathering together in Copenhagen to draft Kyoto II, as does Obama who is trying to foist a cap and trade scheme on the US.
It’s serious because the folks and orgs that embrace AGW want to make big changes because of it. Earth Hour is one of those orgs.
Actus, perhaps we here in Wisconsin have out-liberaled California. I work for a university and this (the Earth Hour thing) was boldly announced and encouraged by the administration. If you want to pursue real leftist ideology, you should move to Wisconsin!
By the way, you’re right, not many will notice my little act of enviro sacrilege. I live in the country. But, my extremely leftist neighbor across the road likely will. And, my wife had a great idea. We’re turning it into a little family “Light of Christ” party. We’ll do the Rosary and a chaplet to St. Michael. We’ll pray for the welfare of the United States, the end of abortion, the conversion of sinners, etc. . . . you know, the usual stuff.
Thanks for commenting.

Will Americas Goebbels = Ted Turner (Leftist Propagandist in Chief) order CNN to Power down for an Hour??
JLenardDetroit (Diary) Thursday, March 26th at 12:38PM EST (link)Rush was covering this subject today. I was not able to get through on the phone but sent an email to the effect of whether the Big-time Lefty loons, such as Ted Turner (CNN), order the Station and will other ObamaStations shut down their broadcasts for that Hour??
NOT THAT WOULD ACTUALLY BE HELPFUL FOR A CHANGE!!!!!

mailloux (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 3:26PM EST (link)I’m no electrician . . . and miles distant from being any sort of computer expert, but your idea sounds a great deal more draining (in terms of energy) than a few light bulbs. Nice one.
And, I like too the idea of a collective statement at RedState against the nonsense of AGW. Your idea effectively kills two birds (or “polar bears” if we want to irritate the Earth Hour folks) with one stone (or carbon debit).
