This evening (3/19/09), Barack Obama appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He was the first sitting president to ever appear on a late night talk show. During his appearance he was asked about his poor bowling performance during the campaign. Obama quipped about bowling a 129 at the bowling alley installed within the White House. He described his performance thusly:
“It’s like special Olympics.”
My reaction? Outrage and a firm conclusion that the president is a self-absorbed, juvenile piece of work, unworthy of the office he now occupies.
You see, Obama managed to insult an old friend of mine. In my early 20’s I worked in a group home in Providence, RI. There I befriended Eddy. As my shift began around 2pm, he would return from his factory job. He and I would then head to a ball field several blocks from his home. We would then commence practicing for Special Olympics. Eddy competed in the soft ball toss. He worked diligently and that summer, he won a medal. The man was very proud of his accomplishment.
Although Eddy was developmentally disabled, he was by no means unaware of the world around him including the media. He liked TV and comprehended it quite well. He knew who was the president at the time (Clinton) and looked up to the man just because he was the president (I didn’t share my politics with Eddy because I was also, in a sense, his employee). I can imagine that Eddy watched Obama on the Tonight Show this evening and I can imagine that he was hurt by Obama’s Special Olympics joke.
Well President Obama, on the behalf of Eddy, I can tell you that you aren’t half the man he is.

Can you just imagine the "outrage" if a Republican
Achance (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 2:58AM EST (link)had made that crack about the Special Olympics? Of course, never will be heard a discouraging word about it in the MSM; if The One does it, it must be good.

Achance, the media double standard with Obama is kafkaesque
mailloux (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 8:42AM EST (link)I woke up this morning still fuming about his “joke”. Obama reminds me of a snickering little, juvenile, high school punk making ‘retard’ jokes in the locker room . . . just the kind of guy that’s begging to be decked.
Whether the media covers it or not (and we all know most will not), the unrecognized reality is that he has heaped yet more shame upon the Office of the Presidency. I hardly thought it was possible, but Obama continues to outdo himself in that category.
Thanks for reading, commenting, and the reco . . . I’ve got to go off and do some deep breathing exercises or something.

Instead, we have this lovely man who makes all of us beam with pride and respect on an hourly basis. Never a day goes by that I don’t thank Gaia for the gift of Obama and Michelle’s lovely arms.

janis (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 11:46AM EST (link)And while you were kind enough to explain that, I was dealing with my husband’s cousin to whom we had just sold a car. It was a ’94 with over 200,000 miles on it, had body damage, AC didn’t work, paint was disappearing, had hail damage from a storm 6 years ago when we only had collision on it, etc. The reason I mention this? Because when she went to get tags for it, the county clerk wouldn’t accept the low price we put on it and demanded that we fill out a
form listing the reason why we were selling it so cheaply. I know they want all the tax money they can snatch out of our pockets, but it’s just none of their business why I want to sell a junker for a hundred bucks.
Just before that, my mom called to say that the Nashville paper this morning had a map showing the areas where property is going to be reassessed at a higher rate. They live in one of those areas even though their house cannot be sold for what it was worth the LAST time it was appraised due to the housing market.

Thanks for sharing your story. I have two siblings who worked with the mentally challenged in group homes and one of them is now a special needs teacher for the mentally challenged. They both have many similar stories about these our brothers and sisters and how beautiful, honest, sensitive, and hard working they are.
Such a joke is typical of one who hasn’t matured beyond high school. Obama is a cad; a juvenile who won at debate meets, looked down at those who lost, made sure everyone knew he won, only had the kind of friends with whom he could make fun of others, but no real friends.
On a personal level I pity the man for his smallness and self-absorption and the torture he’s not even aware of within himself. On every other level I fear what he has done and will do while weakly at the helm of this ship of state as it’s adrift and gale force winds are pushing it hard to port toward the jagged cliffs. Don’t forget: the Titanic was too big and great to sink, too.
I’d like to recommend your diary, but the system won’t let me for some reason.

The definition of the narcissism can be found in this statement.
Steph C (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 12:28PM EST (link)Some amounts of narcissim are healthy because it’s a self-preservation adaptation. However, when it becomes the be all/end all of a person’s existence, that person loses the best parts of being human. They can mouth platitudes and sound like they care, but they truly lack empathy and understanding of how others might feel. That’s why such gaffes happen. In an unguarded moment away from his teleprompter…
But he apologized later and all is forgiven, right, because he really does care?

Clinical narcissism
Steph C (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 4:25PM EST (link)Goes beyond a love affair with a mirror. The narcissist builds a whole world based on his (or her) wishes; a fantasy world. They think they are uniquely qualified to order the world and they believe they have an entitlement to power and positions of importance.
When things don’t go the way the narcissist believes they should, somebody pays for it, usually those closest to him (or her). In a real position of power, the narcissist has all kinds of people at his (or her) beck and call to do what the narcissist wants done. If they’re successful then credit for the success become “I” as in singlehandedly causing. If they’re failures, then the failures are the people who didn’t implement those things correctly. His (or her) self-view must be protected at all costs.
This is part of the reason why I have to bite my tongue sometimes. I lived with one for 23 years. It’s very hard to stick to facts sometimes when I see my ex in our new president, knowing that now the entire country has to deal with clinical narcissim like I did for so many years. The worst part is that so many are willing to be abused that way. You know, when the triad (Reid, Pelosi, and Obama) fail, it won’t be their failure. It will be ours and not just conservatives but every man, woman, and child in the country.

One other thing...
Steph C (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 4:31PM EST (link)Narcissists don’t have a lot of real friends. They know a lot of people, some of whom they claim as friends whether they are or not, depending on the perceived importance of said people, but real friends are scarce. And those who might consider him a friendwill often find to their detriment that the narcissist has no interest in anyone but himself and keeping his perfect world working. Friends’ problems are unimportant.
I believe this might have some bearing on why Obama is having a hard time finding people to fill key positions in his administration, not just because of ethical issues as some were confirmed in spite of that.
I will also add the disclaimer that this is all speculation on my part since I’m not in a position to do psychoanalysis on the president… or licensed to be either.

It's not disdain only for the handicapped.
Steph C (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 9:29PM EST (link)The type of disdain exhibited by clinical narcissists is for anybody perceived to be less than he or she perceives themselves to be. They learn how to mimick appropriate demeanors, using a lot of clichés and grandiose gestures to convince people of their sincerity when they actually have none unless it’s to their benefit. They like to be surrounded by people whom they consider important, on an equal or higher status than the narcissist is at.
If you think about the Gordon Brown reception in that light, doesn’t it make perfect sense how Obama treated him? Obama felt comfortable slighting them because he feels secure enough that they have no place else to go… if that makes sense. He has no understanding that American exceptionalism is what pulls people to look to us, whether they profess to love us or hate us.

Steph C (Diary) Saturday, March 21st at 7:31AM EST (link)I’ll just say: thanks.
In many ways ordinary is all I ever aspire to be. I’m not concerned with being better, richer, prettier, or popular than anybody else. I don’t measure success or security by those things because I know all too well how fleeting they are. No, my measure of success comes from inside; in the knowledge that I can survive anything short of death itself reaching for me.

Justin_Case (Diary) Saturday, March 21st at 11:59AM EST (link)as a house painter and paper hanger.
Much of my work has been historic preservation. Right now, I’m restoring a house built in the 1880s here in Greene County Tennessee. Actually, this house is new compared to some I have remodeled, repaired or painted over the years. Thirty years ago I worked on the Andrew Johnson Historic Site in Greeneville and have done much of this type of work on old structures since then.
Most of my customers are millionaires who do not ask how much a project is going to cost. I haven’t advertised in 25 years. I drive an old Nissan pick up with 290K on the odometer.
My point is that I, too, consider myself successful – even when I sojourn to class reunions where many of my old friends are professional people making the big bucks.
I have a sweet wife who loves me. She and I are in for a break right now from roofing an old milk parlor on our place that I have been working on in my spare time.
One thing I learned in my drop out, hippie days, post Vietnam, is that material stuff “don’t mean nothin’”.

janis (Diary) Saturday, March 21st at 12:19PM EST (link)You come across as such a solid, no-nonsense, kind of man. At the time, I had only been living on the farm here for a couple of years, was newly into farming and was somewhat abashed to be doing that instead of being in an office somewhere. One of my former classmates was some kind of executive who had just been diagnosed with stress-related health problems and who declared his envy when he overhead me describing what it was like to plant 500 strawberry plants by myself in 85 degree weather.
I offered to call him when it was time to hand-dig my sweet potato harvest that fall, but somehow he never gave me his phone number.
By the way, any guy who refers to his spouse as”my sweet wife who loves me” is a classy guy any way you look at it. Thanks for being you, Justin.
Contentment
Justin_Case (Diary) Sunday, March 22nd at 6:55AM EST (link)is elusive in this material world. It is a commodity that is a rare one in a time when people are willing to give away their independence to a government that will provide their every need.
I could tell you all kinds of stories about the early days that my wife and I spent together. The many obstacles we faced were overcome by hard work and patience. Nothing compares with the satisfaction of achieving one’s goals.
Years ago, I stood witness to a wedding in the home of a preacher. The young couple stood where a double yoke for oxen hung on a wall. I don’t know if it was intentional on the preacher’s part, but the yoke always symbolized to me the importance of two people pulling equally. We should never stop striving to achieve this.

mailloux, the description does fit
seattle_ite Saturday, March 21st at 4:22AM EST (link)And, we’ve seen it before, in slightly diluted form. Carter and Clinton were the same, while Johnson went a tad toward megalomaniacal.
These are people who KNOW that they are born to lead, and rarely have the talent or competence to do so. They DEMAND respect from others (in the Navy, it was a new O2 who crossed the street for a salute), while showing respect to none.
I do shudder for the future.
There's hope
Steph C (Diary) Saturday, March 21st at 6:17AM EST (link)seattle_ite, mailloux, and Justin the good news is we may have to endure the next 4 years but perhaps only the next 4 years. America’s young people invested heavily in Obama but being a bit narcissistic themselves, they’re not going to be happy with no longer being all that important to TheOne. They’ve served their purpose and he’s off to bigger and better things. It must be extremely frustrating for him that nobody wants to work for him in secretary and under-secretary positions,
and that took only two months into his administration.
seattle_ite, funny you should mention magalomania since that, too, is a part of it… and will likely be his downfall. People might have forgotten but this is America and we don’t have kings or emperors for long; or dictators.
I’ve often made reference to Hitler with Obama, not because of the attrocities Hitler committed but his methodology in gaining power and there are striking similarities between some of his Hitler’s old speeches and some of Obama’s. (Even so, people are quick to invoke Godwin’s law.) Now, don’t let that alarm you. I doubt Obama will even come close to doing what Hitler did. This is America, after all, and eventually people will remember what that means.
Besides, although I’d have to go doublecheck it, I believe Hitler was diagnosed as schizophrenic which is a whole other disorder. And Hitler was a genius and I don’t believe Obama is even close to being one.
All Obama knows is campaigning. Pretty speeches are no substitute for definitive action and that will be his downfall. Nobody likes the other two members of the triad and they won’t be able to push their agenda much further. Oh, they may get reelected but only just by the time elections roll around.
If the Republicans just keep doing what they’re doing, the house of cards will fall soon.
And again, this is America and we’re made of the right stuff. We can survive this and rebuild. We might not want to but it looks like we might not have a choice and it’s just a matter of rolling up the sleeves and getting to work to doing it. The thirteen colonies are just a tiny part of the whole. Most of America was built from Europe’s castoffs and look at what they did while Europe declined.

I don’t pretend to be an expert in psychological diseases either, but one doesn’t really need a PHd to see what is wrong with our elected officials, these days.I suppose it is only to be expected; nobody with an actual working knowledge of the Constitution, and the requisite power to do it, has slapped the lefties down at all, during the last 40 years. Bad law gets referred to the SCOTUS, which either declines to make an opinion, or goes the wrong way.
I might be wrong, but a lifetime of observation leads my thinking in this depressing direction.
This reminds me of...
Thrhheggeegwc Jjtkylkfofud (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 9:35PM EST (link)This reminds of the George Allen “macaca” controversy. Allen lost his Senate seat because he called a tracker from Jim Webb’s campaign “macaca.” Liberals were outraged. How is this any different? Now *we’re* being “too sensitive.”

37 is pretty low - does he have difficulty staying out of the left gutter?

Pretty low? 37 = 3.7 pins per frame = 1.95 pins per ball rolled

He cares, and I must say that last spring when I say

Its already a disaster after two months and his policies haven’t even taken effect yet. When this man is unscripted look out. Here is a bigger issue. Barack HUSSEIN Obama wants closer ties with Iran. Again not a surprise. Barack HUSSEIN Obama. Barack HUSSEIN Obama. Barack HUSSEIN Obama.

The President made a joke. Was it really worthy of the outrage expressed here?
Yeah, the Left would hammer an conservative who would make such a remark, but aren’t we a little more thick-skinned than that? Or have we adopted their speech codes?
And, yeah, my friend’s son has Down’s and my cousin has Down’s and I know a friendly, intelligent boy with Cerebral Palsy.
localfood, it's not being "PC" to be outraged by his
janis (Diary) Saturday, March 21st at 7:52AM EST (link)lack of compassion for those who did not choose to be mentally challenged. Obama, on the other hand, has chosen to be arrogant, deceitful, swollen with pride, contemptuous of those who he perceives as “less than” him, and almost totally without compassion as far as I can tell.
From where I am, it is Obama who is far more handicapped than those he mocks.
Actually, we haven't gone PC
Jack_Savage (Diary) Saturday, March 21st at 8:06AM EST (link)We are just helping the left adhere to the same standards they have set up for the rest of us. Just being friendly, that’s all. Or are you against being friendly? Huh? Huh?

streiff (Diary) Saturday, March 21st at 8:53AM EST (link)this simply shows a lack of class, lack of breeding, and a callousness towards people viewed as inferiors. PC; are conservatives different....
dittohead1 Saturday, March 21st at 4:17PM EST (link)…… from liberals? I agree with you. I am an arch-conservative, but I honestly believe Obama did not intentionally slight the disabled. He is not THAT evil. Mountain out of a mole hill IMO. Whenever he goes solo(without the teleprompter) then this is to be expected. He is not very swift.
America-love it or leave it!
Obama is a bigot
Return to Revolution (Diary) Sunday, March 22nd at 3:57PM EST (link)My daughter has Down Syndrome – so while it is easy to take the comment personally, I’m not PC and I don’t particularly care what people say in general. However, for a man who claims to represent the disadvantaged, the downtrodden, the little guy – only shows what a complete fraud he is and it confirms my suspicion that he does not even have good intentions.
He is a hateful bigot who is bent on soaking anyone who achieves and at the same time, loathes those who cannot. Combine that with the fact that he is the most powerful man in the world and that makes him a genuine tyrant.
