This post is not about crime, or violence, or racism, or even race. This is a post about the ridiculous subconscious biases that permeate the way the media covers news. Although this exact sort of absurdity has been pointed out again and again, the purveyors of the sort of obliviousness displayed below still are afforded positions of respect among too much of the voting populace. And so we must hit them again and expose who they are.
This story in today’s Washington Post is about a school in Philadelphia that is apparently 70% black, 18% Asian, and 12% unidentified “other.” On December 3rd of last year, many of the school’s black students erupted in violence that was systematically and exclusively targeted at the school’s Asian students. All of this is clearly set forth in the article:
Fueled by rumors, a group of students roamed the halls searching for Asian victims until one was attacked in a classroom. Later, about 70 students stormed the cafeteria, where several Asians were beaten. About 35 students pushed past a police officer onto the so-called “Asian floor,” but were turned back. After school, Asians being escorted home were attacked anyway by a mob of youths.
In case you read this paragraph and thought that the Washington Post was describing racially-motivated violence, they were quick to set you straight in the very next paragraph thusly:
Almost all the attackers were black – but few observers believe the violence was due to racial hatred. Instead, they cite isolation of different groups within the school, certain students’ warped “gangster” values, and for some, simmering resentments over perceived benefits for Asian students.
One is left to wonder who this vast majority of observers are who apparently believe that racial hatred didn’t have anything to do with the targeted and systematic violence perpetrated exclusively on members of a racial minority in a school; certainly it cannot be anyone who actually read the first three paragraphs of this particular Washington Post article. Certainly if the victims of the violence had been black (or indeed any non-Asian minority), the author of this article would not have believed it himself. If this were a school in which the demographics were 70% white and 18% black, and one day a bunch of the white kids beat up dozens of the black kids, absolutely no one would be interested in the many subtleties at play in this particular locality that might otherwise account for the violence; we would instead be treated to A1 headlines in bold type screaming “HATE CRIMES ROCK PHILADELPHIA AREA SCHOOL” faster than you could say “Duke Lacrosse team.”
But what about these alleged subtleties set forth in the article that allegedly show that race has nothing to do with this entire regrettable situation? Well, let’s examine them.
Wali Smith makes no excuses for the attacks, but understands where they come from. A community specialist who holds workshops on anger management and conflict resolution in various schools, he witnessed the Dec. 3 violence.
The South Philly native says blacks have always felt marginalized in the neighborhood dominated by Italians and Irish. Now, some students feel an almost unconscious resentment when they see their Asian counterparts studying on their special second-floor sanctuary, which was established to provide language programs and provide a more welcoming environment.
“Those (black) kids feel the majority of the staff there does not care about their education,” Smith says. “They see these Asian kids come in and be nurtured, and they want that same kind of comfort.”
** snip **
“It’s not based on race, it’s based on opportunity,” Smith said of the history of violence against Asians. “If they go to the bathroom and take your money, and you don’t report it, they’ll just keep riding it until the wheels fall off.”
Um. Someone ought to tell the Washington Post that this doesn’t explain that the beatings were non-racial; in fact, it proves that the beatings were racial. I mean, during the days of Jim Crow, I’m sure you could find plenty of people who would patiently explain to you that the reason whites were committing violence on blacks who attempted to enter de-segregated schools is because they felt resentment at intrusion on an area that had long been theirs, and worried that their children’s educational accomodations would suffer, and they’d also point out that it wasn’t like the blacks were going to do anything about it anyway. And today, we would even have a word for those people offering such justifications: racists.
You see, the people who sympathized with Jim Crow didn’t have the gall to claim that Jim Crow wasn’t racial; they just claimed that the deplorable racist behavior in question was excusable or at least understandable. That’s exactly what the author of this Washington Post piece here does; yet somehow he believes that his explanation proves that the behavior of the black students in this school wasn’t racially motivated at all. This is the height of ivory-tower absurdity, and anyone who works in a job where even marginal critical thinking skills are required (i.e., not the media) sees this farce for what it is: a willful refusal on the part of the author to believe that anyone can be racist who isn’t white.
And so this dreck comes pouring forth on the pages of one of the country’s most well-known newspapers, when everyone in Amercia can guess how the story would be covered if the tables were turned. As I said at the begnning of this piece, it’s still probably true that the mainstream media has more influence over voters than do newer media outlets; thankfully, they are operating on an auto-self-discrediting loop, and we are nearing the time when that will change.

The left claims to believe that blacks can not be racist
Beaglescout (Diary) Monday, September 6th at 10:52AM EST (link)That is because they believe the only racism that can be committed in America is by white people who speak English against groups of people who are either not white in hue or who speak Spanish. How white is white? Despite her obvious dark hue, Snooki is white, while Jennifer Lopez whose hue is lighter is not. That’s because it isn’t about the individual. The left doesn’t believe in individuals. They believe in groups, classes, races, gangs, the collective. And likewise they do not believe in individual freedom, but in the right of a class or ethnicity or collective to force its members into submission and uniformity, by terror if necessary. To stop collective action in order to protect an individual from it is racism, in their twisted mind, unless it targets a “white” collective such as a Christian church.
There are no principles at play. There are no assumptions that humans are the same under the skin. There is only universal racism on the Left: Universal racism and sexism, universal obsession with material goods, and power politics to divide and conquer then reap the spoils.

Different problem
Beaglescout (Diary) Tuesday, September 7th at 1:52PM EST (link)Yes the schools are dysfunctional when they teach fisting and gay recruiting propaganda to middle schoolers. More importantly the prison-like schools are dysfunctional when their job is to contain students within their walls instead of preparing them to live in the world and sending them out into it. Parents who don’t make their kids do their homework or even teach them from a young age that homework is valuable aren’t doing their job either.
But I was talking about the progressive left as exemplified by their main propaganda arm and revolutionary cadre, the lamestream Pravda media. The left has redefined words to mean the opposite of their true meanings. They call any invocation of universal human values racism, and call actual racism justice or pride. That is the problem I was pointing out, and yet another reason to pray that the lamestream Pravda media goes broke and out of business faster. It can’t happen fast enough for me!

a funny thing about terms. Many in this country call themselves Hispanic. Of course the term Hispanic means “of Spain”. But people from Spain are Caucasian. So basically if you call yourself “hispanic” you are not. If you are Hispanic, you would never call yourself Hispanic.
Heck some people call Spanish speakers in this country Spanish lol, as if we were all English because that is the language we speak. Most middle class Brits are pretty good about racial tolerance (they’re real sticklers when it comes to fair play, which I like), but again, you can find some pretty scary amounts of full-on racism among some labor and lower class types! Basically, the guys who vote for the BNP, a clutch of Tories, and a fair amount of Labour voters. I’d say it’s somewhere around 6% of the country, as a completely anecdotal measuring. (Though to be fair, that percentage is pretty much hated by everyone else in the country.) At any rate, it’s always fun to see “tolerant” places like France sneer at Americans on this issue when they’re so much worse.

well personally I find the term Latino to be absurd
Doc Holliday (Diary) Monday, September 6th at 3:10PM EST (link)like a bunch of people walking around wearing togas. But the way I understand it, Latino is mainly a California term by people of Mexican heritage.
In the end, it is all a house of cards. I guess people have a right to call themselves whatever they want to call themselves. But there is no biological race of people who had some Spanish influence that reaches from Florida and California to the West Indies, down to Chile. Anyone who picks up a history book can see that pretty clearly.
I find it odd that people focus on their shared language when their minority status is mainly being not of the nation that gave them that language. For example, those from Chile and Argentina are mostly European in heritage, those from Peru can be almost 100 percent native. Mexico is rare because of its assimilation, most from Mexico are truly mixed, they are known as Mestizo.
In some ways I tire of these type of discussions because people should be judged one at a time. On the other hand, it is quite interesting how people try to create a race out of nothing for political and even self identification purposes.
One reason why few question these terms is that so few people from Spain have immigrated to this country. Since there are so few actual Spaniards here, it is easy for people to claim to be Spanish, Latino, Chicano, Hispanic etc. In the end, the words have no meaning at all.
Molon Labe!

No One Seems Fooled
Matthew (Diary) Monday, September 6th at 10:57AM EST (link)It sounds to me that there were two or three different writers/editors working on this story.
The Post notes seems “few observers believe the violence was due to racial hatred. Instead, they cite isolation of different groups within the school, certain students’ warped “gangster” values, and for some, simmering resentments over perceived benefits for Asian students.”
It had nothing to do with racial hatred, just simmering resentments over race. It sounds like someone rewrote either the front of that paragraph or the end.
Also, note, that saying someone is being racially discriminatory -is- condemning the attackers (see pg. 3). It is funny what gets written some days. I would not think it is a neutral comparison to be associated with people who were racists like the father does in that paragraph.
Also: “”They’re just hating on other races. They don’t have anything better to do with their lives,” says Tyreke Williams [a former student], who graduated last June.” Did the Post not look at their own sources who note the violence has to do with racial hatred? Seriously, the students get that it is racial, the parents get that it is racial, the school gets that it has to do with race.
I don’t know anything about the incoming principal but what’s printed here, but he seems to have a good head on his shoulders.
The only people who have no clue that this is a racial problem are at the Post
And what does the WashPo mean by an "observer?"
SoFiMil (Diary) Monday, September 6th at 12:04PM EST (link)Could it be that “most of the observers” were of a particular race? And that these observers defended those of their own race from the indefensible?
Interviews of first-hand observers are important. But defending “one’s own” from the indefensible can happen with any race. This is why it is critical that *outside* observers also review these incidents as well.

They elementally know that the “it’s not wrong, it’s just different” meme is a lie. My kids always had to tolerate mainstreamed Special Ed kids in their classes and all three were at some time assaulted by a “mainstreamed” kid. Most are just vle, violent sociopathic brats that if there were a man with a belt in their lives would straighten up and fly right quickly, but since they have to be tolerated just become worse and worse animals. The inevitable aways happens, somebody gets tired of tolerance and beats Hell out of the kid. All the kids know it was deserved yet the school comes to the aid and defense of the vile violent predator they’ve produced. Kids get this and before long, the “security” thing becomes very real and you want to be associated with people who have your back. My oldest was a big, strong athlete and not only did he have a following, he considered it to be a part of his role at school and in social activities to look out for that following. Of course, some of them were quite pretty and he tried to look out for them particularly well – too well sometimes. But the girls also do it among themselves; the strong athletic girls have no qualms about interceding physically. I think this is why “girl fights” have become so common these days. In my day even among half-wild country kids, girls fighting was unheard of.
The kids all know that some kids only had to get their name on the test to get their A and a smiley face while most kids had to get most of the questions right just to get a B. One of the “Resource Teachers” that helped the mainstreamed kids get their name on the test would always say “you’re no less a person for it” when somebody did something wrong or stupid. It became the standing joke among all the kids and they jeered at other kids or even other competitors at sporting events, “you’re no less a person for it” whenever somebody struck out or missed a shot. But the lesson it imparts to the kids is that the system is rigged and different people have different rules. This is NOT the way to instill respect!

When I got off the bus, (wearing my class A greens) I was in a luggage room in an old wooden depot, with a wooden bench along the back wall with three old black men seated on it. As I was looking around, one of them asked: ” ‘scuse me, sarh, is you lookin’ fo’ yo’ luggage?” I replied I was, and he said, “Oh, you’ll find that in the ‘Front’ waitin’ room”. I thanked them and went through a door into a hallway which had two drinking fountains and four bathrooms, all clearly marked – “White”, and “Colored”. I remember thinking to myself: “Didn’t we fight a Civil War about this almost a hundred years ago?”. Obviously the good folks in Augusta hadn’t gotten the word back then. Look around today and ask yourselves if anything has changed? Then ask yourself if anything has remained the same? Yes, there is still racial prejudice, but not nearly as much as I encountered at the time, and not nearly for the same reasons. Let me explain it with this brief example: In San Francisco, there is a very, very prestigious public High School which practices extreme racial discrimination against Asians so that some white and more blacks can attend. Otherwise, they reason, the student body would only be made up of (very smart) Asians. Good, liberal thinking, that. Lower the threshold for some, instead of maintaining the same high standards for all. And that is what I was getting at earlier. It’s the institutionalized “Lowering of the Bar” (and the dependency it has inculcated into some cultures) for the last forty years that has led to the racial-cultural resentment that I see growing today. Some (on both sides) have noted it by expressing the idea in Animal Farm: “Some are more equal than others”. Yes, that is a part of it. So too is the notion: “It’s our (my) turn now” to get back at “them (the other)”. This smoldering ember seems to be being fanned into flame by the current administration, not doused by any fair and equitable actions of it’s Department of ‘Justice’. My suggestion? “Lets (Tea) Party, Like We Did Last Summer”.
You're talking about Lowell High...
furious (Diary) Thursday, September 9th at 1:01PM EST (link)…and Asian and White parents prevailed in a lawsuit to overturm
quotas there. As this article spins it, unfortunately, Asians lost by winning because they were allied with ‘anti-affirmative-action right wingers’.
Lowell High is a big deal for Asian families in SFO, who know the competition their children face for prized admissions to UCB and UCLA are determined in large part by attendance and success at magnet schools like Lowell.
It puzzles me more why Asians vs. Jews tend Democrat, when the Democrats’ core Identity Politics is so heavily weighted against them.
