Perry is right below 52% now

appears to be a runoff for what Republican will challenge Edwards and Rodriquez

17th Flores and Curnock would be in runoff

22nd Cancesco and Hurd

it seems like the ratio has been pretty steady all night

Perry 52
KBH 31
Medina 17

From what I’ve seen, it has only changed a fraction from that, though of course if it gets closer there’s a huge difference between 50.1% and 49.9%.

turnout nt

proudgop (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 10:40PM EST (link)

curious if any Texas posters can give us some context on turnout for Republicans vs Dem and if Dem turnout is more poor then usual?

as of about 9:45...

bk (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 10:45PM EST (link)

Perry has more votes w/37% counted than all the Dems combined w/40% counted.

In Texas you can choose to vote in either primary, so who knows what crossover is like. Only restriction is that you can only vote in runoff election next month in the party you voted with today.

turnout nt

proudgop (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 10:54PM EST (link)

How many more voters tend to vote in Republican primaries then Dems though?

is turnout on Dem side pretty low compared to normal? Looking for enthusiasm gap I guess

I don't know but...

bk (Diary) Tuesday, March 2nd at 11:04PM EST (link)

McCain beat Obama by 55.5 to 43.8.
Bush beat Kerry by 61.2 to 38.3

So it looks like the normal ratio is around 60/40 R to D.
Tonight it’s around 67/33 in R vs D primary votes cast.

But since White was a shoo-in, some White voters may have crossed over to vote against Perry and some Medina voters may sit out the general.

I don’t know what you can read into any of that, but it’s hard to see Perry losing to White in November.

No the number of Dems had good numbers as well

A winner is declared if someone gets 50 percent plus one of the vote or is it 51 percent. – That’s sorta big in a state the size of Texas. Also, since KBH conceded does that mean she’s out entirely and won’t even participate in a runoff, or she just conceded the top spot?

Also, should we be worried of her (senate wise) since she lost the gov’s race. Will she pull a Scozzahuzits and vote dem on some issues. Just asking cause she’s your dance partner, and I’m hoping you know.

IJB Wednesday, March 3rd at 12:21AM EST (link)

…Are pigs, AFAIAC.

That's some pretty harsh language

jwebb (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 9:29AM EST (link)

I’m a GOP voter, activist, and precinct chair in CD14. There are voters that vote for the Ronulan Overlord because they are young, idealistic and like the idea of legalized drugs and peace breaking out all around the world. That’s maybe 20% of his base around here. Then there are the middle-aged folks who think he is brilliant on fiscal issues. That group is about 45% of his base. The other 35% are older folks that have always voted for him and recognize his name on the ballot. Many of them do not pay attention to politics at all.

If the more disengaged part of his base had a real education, they’d flee from him, but it is very hard to unseat the incumbent when the constituency is asleep. The hard core Ronulans will never be swayed.

But all in all, I would never call them pigs. My guess is you are not in Texas and I wouldn’t recommend you come here and insult us in that manner. In that regard, I would stand shoulder to shoulder with a Ronulan.

Have a nice day.

Tea for Texas? Nope, not yet.

texasgalt (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 12:11AM EST (link)

I have a lot of admiration for the Tea Party movement. I have been among them. They are an enthusiastic bunch. Many of them were perfectly happy to vote for Rick Perry. Those who didn’t vote Perry learned a lesson tonight in Texas. Running weak and hopelessly underfunded candidates in the Republican primary just doesn’t get the job done.

To make a real difference theTea Partiers will have to work within the party starting at the precinct level. Tonight, after the polls closed, precinct conventions were held. So what? The so what is delegates are chosen and delegates can change the party.

We had a whopping FIVE people show up from my precinct and all five of us elected ourselves as delegates. The precinct qualified for 29 delegates. There was room for 24 more activists to help set policy.

Tea Partiers and conservatives take note. The Texas Republican party is wide open to your participation. You need only to show up where and when it really counts.

Bad Night for Texas Conservatives?

Menlo (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 12:25AM EST (link)

People don’t seem to understand that it doesn’t matter one whit who won the governor’s race.

In the State Board of Education, while Tincy Miller may surprisingly lose to George Clayton (a good thing) in District 12, it looks like Don McLeroy has lost to the anti-Christian Thomas Ratcliff in District 9. I don’t know how that happened or why that many people would have wanted to vote for Ratcliff.

I don’t know what happened in house district 66, but it looks like they are headed for a runoff. I have a hunch this is not a very conservative district though.

It looks like there are a lot of Polo Road elitists in the lead right now in house races, and it looks like a bad night for Texas conservatives. I don’t hold out hope Straus will lose his speaker’s job either.

The next legislative session is going to be just as bad if not worse than the last two, with the agenda controlled by Democrats.

I was perusing the SOS returns (how sick of a political junkie am I that I troll through state house results of states I’m not even in) and it looked like there were a couple of conservative challengers who ousted long-term GOP reps (Lance Goodwin was one of them) so that looks promising.

Oh...to kowalski, the other state House race was

eburke (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 12:44AM EST (link)

Simpson over Merritt (looking at Simpson’s web site he was running on a ‘be a real Republican’ platform) so that’s another ‘entrenched’ GOP incumbent who bit the dust. Also, David Porter, a CPA from the Midland area (the heart of oil country) campaigned on the ‘outsider, crap & tax is a crock, the Obama administration’s energy policy is a joke’ platform and handily defeated Carillo, the incumbent. Don’t know much about him ‘cept it sounded like he’s been around forever so…Texas looks like it made at least *some* inroads into the status quo.

Now, if KBH would just stick to her promise and get the he** out of Michael William’s seat…

Oh, that’s right – RINOs rarely keep their word. I forgot.

Ousting of Tom Craddick

Menlo (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 1:26AM EST (link)

A group of elitist RINOs calling themselves the “Polo Road Gang” fought very hard to replace a conservative speaker with one of their own just before the 2009 session. They got together with the Democrats to replace Craddick with Straus, who rewarded them with powerful appointments. Democrats and the media loved them, and they loved (and still love) Straus. You can probably find a lot of news stories from that time. All the liberal media was gloating over it.

Thanks to them, nothing substantive for conservatives even gets a debate in the house; it doesn’t have a chance. I think all of them dislike Perry; and they certainly aren’t going to let him influence their agenda.

I'm watching the results on one of the local news sites

jarrod21 Wednesday, March 3rd at 12:26AM EST (link)

They have a live chat room thing. I personally think it’s a mistake. Anyhow, a few of the nutters are screaming to each other about Perry and KBH colluding to steal the election from Medina and saying that there are still 19% of the precincts to report, so there’s no way – not even through advanced mathematics and knowledge of the population of remaining precincts – that they could know Perry has won.

So how do they analyze this

mustango (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 7:56AM EST (link)

Glad I could do my part in the gubernatorial race — Medina was an intriguing candidate but she proved to my satisfaction that at the very least she just wasn’t ready.

But what I want to know is, how will the MSM square this result with the narrative that the Tea Party movement is “anti-incumbent” in nature (to pick one of their less derogatory terms).

Climate Nut vs. City Ordinance

techsan (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 8:58AM EST (link)

Taking advantage of most current open thread and changing subjects….

Slashdot points to a story in the LA Times (via Hugh Pickens)…

In short…a couple decides to save the planet by replacing their grass with wood chips. Only now they face a “maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for their grass-free, eco-friendly landscaping scheme.”

Quotes like this blow my mind:

They said they were trying to do something good for the environment.

“We’ve got a newborn, so we want to start worrying about her future,” said Quan Ha, an information technology manager for Kelley Blue Book.

and

But city officials determined the fix was not acceptable, saying city codes require that 40% of the yard be landscaped predominantly with live plants.

“Compliance, that’s all we’ve ever wanted,” said Senior Assistant City Atty. Wayne Winthers.

and

They sent a photo of the yard to city officials in October. But according to the city, their landscaping still did not comply with city standards.

and

It’s just funny that we pay our taxes to the city and the city is now prosecuting us with our own money,” Quan Ha said. “Doesn’t it waste funds to go back and forth in court, rather than sending pictures, e-mails and having phone conversations?”

Winthers said he hopes the city can work out a compromise. “We know times are tough, but we’re willing to work with them, we’d be more than happy to,” he said.

Bolding is mine. This last one is the best. What could possibly go wrong with government involvement in lawncare?!?

Heh. How silly of them to think politicians actually believed global warming was real. PropertyValues meet EnviroNuts…hope you enjoy your time together.

In the end, all we have on our side of the debate are facts and history.

techsan (Diary) Wednesday, March 3rd at 10:07AM EST (link)

great feedback….thank you.

I was split myself on this. I started a new diary and there were instructions about when to do new diaries vs. finding an open thread.

I completely agree this is off topic of the open thead. But if the open-thread topic drives the content, then, respectfully, what is an open thread for?

From another perspective, my post did get longer than a quick comment..now that I look at it. So I do see your point.

In the future I’ll consider the different a bit more and make a choice. And I will keep learning more on OpenThread vs. NewDiaryEntry ettiquite.

I see your point - I didn't even think about the "open thread" in the title

Tom Craddick for Speaker

danhndrx Saturday, March 27th at 4:19PM EST (link)

Tom is from conservative West Texas. He is not a RINO and never has been.
He will be a true Conservative Speaker for Texas. We must not allow the Dems to control any committees. This is a war of Ideas people. The Dems are progressives that want Washington Politics for Texas.

Is that what you want? I bet not. The conservatives were not able to govern for Texas largely because Dems controlled too many seats in Austin and too much influence in committees. We need a conservative, we need Tom Craddick back as Speaker.
We will rock the Dems world. No more appeasement. No more retreat.
