NRCC Deputy Comms Director: Liberal Positions are “Mainstream.” [UPDATED]

[UPDATED BELOW THE FOLD - Apparently, the NRCC did not write the press release in question. LHW]

As conservatives are energizing themselves for a run at taking back the House, we would like to be able to place our faith in organizations like the NRCC to recognize the issues conservatives believe in and work to advance those issues.  This kind of crap, written by NRCC Deputy Communications Director Paul Lindsay, does not help. For background, Lindsay’s op-ed is written in support of Dede Scozzafava, who is currently running for the now-vacant NY-23 seat in a special election.  We have written extensively on Scozzafava’s execrable liberalism at length here and here.  Scozzafava is a pro-abortion liberal who is bad on spending and in the pocket of the labor unions.  I can think of no issue on which she is a measurable improvement over any Democrat.  I can’t imagine that the people who are giving money to the NRCC (which is something I generally encourage) are doing so in order to fund the campaigns of people like Scozzafava.  However, the job of the NRCC is to get Republicans elected, so I don’t really expect them to oppose Scozzafava’s candidacy.  It would be really great, however, if the NRCC’s communications staff would not write op-eds that a) concede that liberal positions are “mainstream” positions, and b) completely cede the moral and linguistic high ground to liberals:

While some of her views may alienate more conservative Republicans, her positions put her in the political mainstream. Her support of women’s issues has been consistent. Her efforts to improve the north country economy and responsiveness to the needs of workers has earned her endorsements of organized labor.

There is basically no conservative response to this paragraph that would not violate the posting rules of this site.  “Women’s issues”, of course, is the extreme liberal framing code phrase for abortion.  To see someone in the communciations shop of a Republican organization using it favorably is positively sickening.  It’s especially offensive when followed by praise for “organized labor,” which is of course a less thinly-veiled code phrase for the liberal thugs who are pulling the levers of the modern Democratic party.  It’s more offensive still to see these positions described as “mainstream” in a way that implies that the opposite positions are out of the mainstream, and only held by some of the far-right kooks in the party.

The NRCC has done many things over the last few months that are praiseworthy.  They are doing a good job of recruiting candidates and have done a passable job of fundraising as well.  But we are approaching a time when many conservatives who have never been actively involved in politics before are looking for ways to get involved, and they are inherently distrustful of the Congressional fundraising and election committees (thanks in no small part to the marvelous tenure of Liddy Dole at the NRSC).  The NRCC has an excellent opportunity here to win back the trust of the boots on the ground and the small donors that the GOP has always relied on.  Unfortunately, their communications shop seems to have not gotten the memo.

This is not the time to abandon the NRCC.  This is the time to let the NRCC that we are watching, and we don’t appreciate being told that our positions are not mainstream, and we don’t appreciate our Congressional campaign committees parroting the language of the left.  Contact the NRCC’s communications shop here (or at 202-479-7070) and let them know how you feel.

[UPDATE]: The story here explaining this phenomenon is unbelievable, but apparently true.  The Watertown Daily Times initially published an editorial praising Scozzafava on July 24.  You can read that editorial here, which clearly does not have the Paul Lindsay credit at the bottom.  The press shop at the NRCC then did what they are supposed to do, which is to circulate positive press about Republican candidates to potentially interested parties.  Apparently, the folks at the Watertown Daily Times were on that email list.  Someone at the Watertown Daily Times did not realize that this was an editorial that they published in their own paper, and erroneously believed it to be a letter to the editor from Paul Lindsay.  So, they published it again, this time erroneously crediting Paul Lindsay as the author of the piece.  Just a spectacular piece of journalistic incompetence here.  So apparently, no need to send a bunch of angry calls/emails to the NRCC over this.

We can’t stop here. This is bat country.

Which is why the NRCC does not get a dime from me.

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Tuesday, August 4th at 11:43AM EST (link)

of contra-intellectualism we can always count on from the NRCC. Let’s review, shall we Paul?

Part I
Republican’s slowly deteriorate and then virtually disappear from Congress as they lurch left. In the coupe de grace we run the biggest “moderate” in recent memory for POTUS. The party gets guillotined.

Part II
The party starts to take conservative positions and fights back the horde of socialist, big spending, partisan and so-called “moderate” positions. People cheer, attend town halls and start to think Republicans are not perfect, but perhaps MAY have learned their lesson- that is, conservative ideals are what the populace wants from government.

The NRCC Plot
Still stuck in the past, the NRCC feels that electoral strategy applies and will support every outlier they feel can win office under the Republican “banner” (just when that banner has started to mean something again).

The Spoiler
People here in NY are not just sick of local politicians that have corrupted and bankrupt the state. They are beginning to loath people like John Hall and Scozzafava because they support the efforts of this Democratic led congress, Barack Obama and the so-called moderates who have destroyed our party.

The Challenge
Well, not really. We will win and comply with the people’s will, without you. Thanks.

One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

So my apologies to Paul Lindsay, but....

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Tuesday, August 4th at 3:50PM EST (link)

what is the NRCC’s position on Scozzafava? Inquiring minds want to know.

The NY State Republican Party is full of hacks and has-beens steeped in old time losers and pointless political calculations. Furthermore, the local voters don’t know Paul Lindsay from Paul Revere. So they believe the Republican Party universus supports and looks like Scozzafava; or is that the allowable illusion? Or do we just sit by and suck our thumbs while the image we are trying to recover gets obscured by Democrats-in-Republican-makeup playing the let’s get elected statistical averages game.

How about supporting Doug Hoffman and what should one make of the fact that Scozzafava is bringing all the Pataki leftovers into her camp? Is this a product of the new epiphany politics?

By the way, I support the Young Guns and almost every other thing Paul Ryan gets involved in.

rock solid conservative, and more likely to be found with the “shoot first” brigade than the “let’s ask questions” squad. But having watched John Randall, I think the NRCC does get it. This one might have backfired because they have a policy of trying to publicize endorsements for Republican candidates. There isn’t even a primary for this one, so we don’t get to complain they put their fingers on the scales ahead of it. The candidate was selected by the New York Republican apparatchiks. Yes it was a huge mistake, but the mistake was made well before the NRCC got into the mix.

So, pardon me while I channel Cold Warrior for a moment here: You said you are from New York. Do you live in a precinct that Scozzafava will represent if she is elected? If so, are you registered as a precinct captain? A precinct captain is likely to have some say in who gets selected for these sorts of races.

This was not a LTE from the NRCC

jrandall95 Tuesday, August 4th at 11:49AM EST (link)

Paul Lindsay was not the author of this LTE, in fact no one at the NRCC was. On July 24, the Watertown Daily Times published an editorial endorsing Scozzafava (http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article/20090724/OPINION01/307249980/-1/OPINION). Our press shop sent this around as an FYI to interested parties.

Then for some unknown reason the Watertown Daily Times upon receiving the FYI published this and falsely attributed it to Paul and the NRCC.

jrandall- Why would you even pick this up at all

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, August 4th at 12:21PM EST (link)

and send it as an FYI to anyone. It seems that by sending any message to anyone, it should have been to say that the NRCC does not support or endorse this particular candidate. This is exactly the kind of thing that turns many off to all of the Rupublican Committee groups, just as the NRSC endorsing Crist.

It might be helpful if you post the names of candidates in other Congressional races that the NRCC is going to help. Then let us decide if the NRCC is really interested in getting this party back on track.

Scope you are off base....

There seems to be a huge disconnect between the NRCC Comm. Directors

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, August 4th at 12:09PM EST (link)

Below there is a video from the Redstate gathering of eCampaign Director John Randall. Then there is an appology diary to the NRCC. There was some scolding towards the NRCC for not communicating their positions and/or goals. No one knows who they are financially supporting in the various Confressional races. I read that they are now “hungry” rather than “scared.” Then this diary comes out with a NRCC Communication, and, it is in support of a Liberal who calls herself a Republican- Dede Scozzafava. Big Labor and Abortion are not only not Conservative but, they are not even Republican positions. Or, they didn’t used to be. Being hungry rather than scared could be a very good thing, but, not when the only goal of the NRCC is to get anything with an R after their name elected. Didn’t Erick have a diary on here not long ago saying that the D candidate running against her was not even as Liberal as she? This is exactly what my greatest fear is for 2010 and 2012. When Obama and the Radical Liberals are handing us seats in Congress and possibly the Presidency, it should not be an opportunity for the Rupublican party to support, endorse, and put boots on the ground for what we know to be Liberal Lite candidates. We already saw a backlash, particularly here at Redstate, against the NRSC for endorsing Crist. The NRCC may be hungry, but, they won’t be eating any of my donations. I still think the best thing to do is to give directly to the candidates that we know will change this country for the better.

Scope, I understand you anger...but it is partially misplaced in this instence..

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Tuesday, August 4th at 12:29PM EST (link)

The NRCC was not responsible for this article…there was a mix up. The article was falsely attributed to Paul Lindsay.

The NRCC does get it and that is part of the reason why they have the Young Guns site, which allows you to direct your contributions to individual candidates. With regard to their support of Dede Scozzafava, well they didn’t pick her. The local Republican establishment did so with no primary because none is required.

The NRCC still has a responsibility to do it’s job, which in part is to spread the positive media that a Republican candidate receives.

The NRCC is not the NRSC, we should not punish them for crimes they aren’t committing. Instead embrace the opportunity presented and use the Young Guns site to direct your contributions to those you feel deserve it.

Also you can bypass the NRSC and go to the SFC to do direct contributions for conservative Senate candidates.

Aaron- I had already read the update

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, August 4th at 2:01PM EST (link)

and that is the reason for my second post directly to John Randall. It is certainly understandable that the NRCC would pick up positive news articles about R candidates, and, would want to spread the good news. To consider an article pointing out that an R candidate is for Big Labor and Abortion (Womens issues), is not a positive article about a Republican. I don’t know who the “interested parties” are they were trying to email it to, but, IMO they should have shelved it completely. The keyword I am concentrating on is “positive media” which this was anything but. It was more like a Liberal touting that the R’s have a candidate that finally agrees with them, and, the fact that the Watertown Daily Press reprinted the article and added the name of the NRCC Comm. Director seems to prove my point. I’m sure it was an error, and, I hope that the NRCC learns that to keep a less than positive story alive by circulating it to anyone is a mistake. As far as donations to my chosen candidates, one can also donate directly on the candidates websites.

Positive is in the eye of the beholder I guess...

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Tuesday, August 4th at 2:38PM EST (link)

My only point is that the NRCC does get it and they are doing the best they can given the situation. They have been handed a moderate [read statist] Republican who they must deal with. They didn’t choose her.

My point is that your anger should be directed at the local Republican board who selected her as the Republican candidate, with no primary vote and no input from the voters.

Directing your anger at an organizationg that, on the whole, get’s it and is part of the conservative movement is counter-productive IMHO.

But if you want to withhold support of the NRCC that is your right.

I Disagree Mr. Wolf

NRCC has proven over and over that it does not deserve our respect or financial support.

Most conservatives are in a better position than the NRCC as to which candidates deserve our support. Donate to deserving candidates, not the NRCC.
