The primary function of any just government is to prevent and punish the taking of innocent human life. To but state the proposition is to prove it. Nevertheless, 36 years ago today, in the tradition of Scott v. Sanford, the Supreme Court of the United States took it upon themselves to declare that a certain class of humans were not really humans at all. In Dred Scott, the Supreme Court declared that certain humans were not humans and therefore could be enslaved. In Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court declared that certain humans were not humans and therefore not entitled to have government prevent or punish their unjust killing. Worse, that the government was constitutionally prevented from preventing or punishing their unjust killing.
Almost two generations later, this constitutional and moral atrocity has resulted in the deaths of almost 50 million humans, killed without recourse under the shelter of judicial fiat because of the happenstance of their location. In many respects, it would be easy for the American consciousness to forget these losses; after all, the very reason they are unprotected by the law is that they are small and contained entirely within another human. And, indeed, in Europe and many other places the conversation has passed the unborn by and they die unlamented by any organized movement that seeks justice and protection for them. Yet something different exists within the American moral character which prevents us from forgetting, and from moving on. And so, year after year on this day, we gather in Washington to remember those who have died, to contemplate the enormity of the task before us, and to remind the Supreme Court that our voices will not be excluded from the democratic process forever.
Over the years, our accomplishments have been significant, if inadequate. We have generated widespread support for incremental restrictions on abortion, and have seen societal attitudes on abortion gradually shift towards restriction rather than permission. As ultrasound technology becomes more ubiquitous and advanced, the public has become gradually more accepting of the undeniable truth that unborn children are just that: children. Smaller, perhaps. Less developed, certainly. Hidden to the naked eye, without a doubt. But a child nonetheless. Once that realization hits home, only the blackest of souls will happily embrace the legal killing of children.
This year, however, the pro-life movement faces a unique challenge. This year, our march will not be addressed by a friendly President. In fact, our country has just inaugurated the most fervent supporter of the legalized killing of children who has ever occupied the White House. He has campaigned early and often on rolling back every restriction on abortion that has ever been passed. Already in the dustbin are a number of Bush’s executive orders respecting human life. Within moments of Obama’s inauguration, the whitehouse.gov site had been forcibly scrubbed of all reference to pro-life rhetoric and replaced with language indicating fervent support for legalized abortion at all stages and without restrictions.
More below…
The most important thing to understand about what Obama represents to the pro-life movement is that Obama is not just about rolling back restrictions. Obama is about fundamentally changing the abortion regime in this country. No longer will abortion be a thing anyone can be neutral about. You see, if Obama has his way, we will all be active participants in abortion.
Already Obama has repudiated the Mexico City policy, which prevents your tax dollars from being used to fund groups that provide abortions overseas. Next up on Obama’s agenda is the laughably inaptly named Freedom of Choice Act, which would prevent hospitals and physicians from choosing to not provide abortions. With growing Democratic majorities in both chambers and Obama as President, the Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal funding from being used to provide abortions, must be next on the chopping block.
The abortion regime in this country was a serious blight when all its participants were willing and voluntary. If the new abortion regime comes to pass, it will not only mean that countless doctors will have to choose between the dictates of their conscience and the career they have trained over a decade for. It will also mean that you, the taxpayer, will become an individual participant in abortions. Never again will “personally opposed” to abortion have any meaning, never again will abortion be something that anyone would “never personally do.” In the new abortion regime we will all be forced participants in the approximately 1.2 million abortions that occur in this country every year.
We stand faced with a difficult task. Obama was not elected because he holds these positions; parental notification laws and the partial birth abortion ban were passed with broad bipartisan majorities because they are enormously popular. Nevertheless, because of the GOP’s failings over the last decade, Obama’s undeliable natural charm, and a myriad of other factors, he was in fact elected, and he has the backing of relatively large majorities of Congress. Standing against his agenda will not be easy, but stand we must if we are not all to become participants in this country’s greatest moral failure since slavery.
We begin our stand today.

izoneguy (Diary) Thursday, January 22nd at 9:00AM EST (link)My 9 year old son arrived home from school on Tuesday and I heard him turn the TV on and was watching the ascension of the ONE. A few minutes he came up to my office and asked “what is abortion?”.
I asked why – where did you hear that. He said all the news people were talking about it – that Obama was an abortion supporter. I took a deep breathe and told my son what abortion was.
With a confused look on his face he says “why would anyone want to kill a baby before it was born?”
Mr. Obama – can you answer my son’s question?
I certainly cannot.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

This is, by far, the issue that means most to me
Brian Johnson (Diary) Thursday, January 22nd at 10:16AM EST (link)I’m a 3-legged Conservative, however, the issue of life trumps all else for me. I was an ardent pro-life supporter before, but after taking 12 years to have a child of my own, and seeing the beautiful life being formed in the womb, I have an infinitely greater passion for this issue.
I dread this man, and I place the blood of the innocent unborn who are not given the chance to live because of his actions solely and squarely on the shoulders of Obama and the 52% of America who thought he was “change we need”. The government is quick to tell us where to set our thermostats, what to do with our garbage, what type of lightbulbs to use, what fuel we put in our cars, what animals we can and cannot kill, what trees we can use for lumber, and yet, when it comes to a human LIFE, it’s a personal matter left up to “choice”. Disgusting, and reprehensible.
And it just angers me, as Joe_Cor mentioned, ultimately the GOP has no use for pro-life people. Thanks to Rudy for reminding us of that again yesterday.

As an evangelical Christian

Psalm 127
Unless the LORD builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the LORD guards the city,
The watchman keeps awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To retire late,
To eat the bread of painful labors;
For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.
Behold, children are a gift of the LORD,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
They will not be ashamed
When they speak with their enemies in the gate

wayneinnh (Diary) Thursday, January 22nd at 11:56AM EST (link)It just seems that too many high profile preachers are putting aside their convictions for the sake of their pet causes. In this case, a lot of liberal pastors have decided to get behind Obama for his willingness to reach out and hand over our tax dollars to anyone with a hand out. While I do firmly believe that we are to take care of the weakest and poorest among us, we should not be putting aside what we stand for.
While we can have a debate over whether Rick Warren should have been at the inauguration, I think he should have carefully considered how that affected his witness. I think more liberal evangelicals saw his appearance as a justification of their vote for Obama.

willtenn Thursday, January 22nd at 11:12AM EST (link)But I have to say that the issue of abortion has resulted in the election of more morons at the state level, both pro and anti on this issue than any other issue. Take Michigan for example, I’ll argue that the only matter Granholm has met her constituents desires on is the issue of abortion. How many Governors and State Legislators have we elected at the state level because they were “more” pro or anti on this issue than not only their general election opponent, but also in the primary. I won’t bore with example, but I know in my home state of Tennessee we have systematically elected Republicans solely on the criteria that they were percevied as “more” against aborton than there primary opponent. The problem is the issue of abortion is the ONLY issue these people care about or, more importantly, understand.

DL80 Thursday, January 22nd at 12:57PM EST (link)And even I am glad you banned him. I’ll be honest and say that there are a lot of good logical reasons for banning abortion. I could try to create a twisted argument to defend it (a lot of other liberals do this). But I really only believe in abortion because I can’t empathize with an unborn child, no matter how developed or human it is. It’s easier for me to empathize with a woman who desperately does not want to be a mother. I know it’s not a good argument, but I am trying to be honest. I think there actually is room for compromise on this issue, as unlikely as it seems. If birth control pills were easily accessible and free, I’d have no complaints about more restrictions on abortion.
