Potential

And now a post for the Obama fans.

Behold the latest television ad from Fidelis. I think it pretty much speaks for itself:

the single greatest political ad I’ve ever seen or the worst political cheap shot I’ve ever seen. Perhaps it is both. Enjoyed it just the same.

The position being taken is not to be mistaken
For attempted education or righteous accusation
Only a description just an observation of the pitiful
Condition of our degeneration

Good thing his grandfather

johnCV (Diary) Monday, January 19th at 11:00PM EST (link)

did not feel his daughter was punished with a child.

I’m sure the irony is lost on many….

Huh?

phxg (Diary) Monday, January 19th at 11:17PM EST (link)

Its now OK to for kids to be from a broken home without parental nurturing, raised by a grandparent all because 1 guy was elected president.

Not great odds if you ask me.

I did like the ad though, better then killing them.

better then killing them.

Even a child born to such dire circumstances has the “Potential” to be a great figure.

Yes, that I know, but the fact remains that while killing babies is a horrible thing, why make the point by using broken homes, drugs and dysfunction as the basis. Heck, I’d rather see more birth control ads then this.

But then again I believe in bringing kids into a loving, 2 parent family with an absence of dysfunction; so I am not mainstream.

Based on potential? not so sure we want to plant our flag there too long.

Crowe (Diary) Monday, January 19th at 11:34PM EST (link)

yes, yes, I get the point, and I think it’s a nice political shot and a nice counter-argument to one of the sacred arguments of the left, i.e., “kids from broken homes, etc., are better off not being born”… I smiled a great deal when I first saw it and thought: yeah, I’d like lots of people to see this ad (I’ve put it on my Facebook).

But my second thought was the danger of staking an argument on that ground — i.e., “don’t kill the kid because of the great job he/she may have in the future.” That seems more like Peter Singer’s position. Obviously the best and most important reason not to intentionally kill the child in utero is because the child is a separate human person from the moment of conception with his/her own right to live a natural life, just like any other person.

I’m a student of Morton Blackwell so I know we ought not split our infinitives, mix our metaphors, use sans-serifed fonts, or make the perfect the enemy of the good. I like the ad, and think it would be a good reality check for many who think they have the compassionate position vis-a-vis “unwanted children” (as though ‘being wanted’ bestowed personhood and rights). But I’m uneasy with the ground it stakes–it seems to be slippery ground. But hey, if it gets people to reconsider their support of FOCA and the like, and “softens the ground” so future advances can be made, great.

Yeah, the religious affiliation of the sponsor wasn't lost on me.

Well, at least they aren’t actively campaigning for abortion as so many Catholics have/do.

Again, if it’s primarily a “gotcha,” great. But if they think it’s legitimate ground on which to stand, that’s not so great.

I did get a "holy cow" kind of sense...

Crowe (Diary) Monday, January 19th at 11:48PM EST (link)

As though I could see people’s worlds somewhat crashing in front of them as I watched with the same bemused expression that I’ve been wearing since shortly after the election.

If it all weren’t so real it would be high comedy. As it is, it’s so tragic that all I can do is laugh. Either way, I’m laughing. So things are good since they’re so bad… make sense?

Ironic. And well done.

UncommonRight Monday, January 19th at 11:58PM EST (link)

I wonder if the irony would be lost on Obama if he saw this, or if he’d just think it was another aggrandizing pat on the back?

I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon. I seek opportunity to develop whatever talents God gave me–not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed.

…children have less-than-ideal fathers, etc. But a life is a miracle…a miracle as great as a right pilot to fly a glider into the Hudson…a miracle as great as a non-violent transfer of power. Unfortunately, the perspective is lost on many.

Any respectful message which holds up the miracle of life as important is OK by me.

In the end, all we have on our side of the debate are facts and history.

His mother didn’t raise him alone. She remarried and went to live in Indonesia with her husband and had another child. When that didn’t work out, his mother brought him home to her mother, the president of a bank in Hawaii, to raise. He was sent to the most expensive private school on the island where he spent his time (in his own words) partying. Went to Occidental College in California and then to Columbia and Harvard. We don’t know who paid for all those expensive degress???

Never worked a day in his life then and the only work he’s ever done since is “community organizing” otherwise known as rabble rousing which he’s continued to this day and which he will continue to do well into the future. Why? Because that’s where the money is.
