EPU 's gravity check chronicles - UPDATE
E Pluribus Unum (Diary) Friday, November 21st at 10:39AM EST (link)I figure this is an open-thread matter: For those who missed my Stupid Flying EPU Tricks adventure 27 days ago, please read the link for the full report.
The short version is, I fell 14 feet, got a hairline fracture of my sacrum (part of the pelvic girdle), numerous and pretty substantial soft-tissue injuries, but avoided truly bad injury.
So the update: After day 10 I could walk without crutches, but just limping like an old dog. Now, at day 27, I can walk stairs just fine, I still limp but not bad. I can sleep better now, not good – still never quite get comfortable.
But I am not at a point I can put much weight on my right leg other than walking. Can’t jog, can’t do my kenpo karate with any substantial kicking or twisting much. Mornings suck, as everything is tightened up. Nowadays it is the injured lower right ab muscles and groin that are still healing and quite tender. Structurally, the bones are healing but still not fully capable of full support. Getting there, though.
Nevertheless, I’m doing rehab, and everything is on course. They told me I would not be fully healed for 8 weeks, and that I probably would not be truly “right”, as good as new, for 4-6 months.

The best thing for this...
kowalski (Diary) Friday, November 21st at 11:08AM EST (link)The best thing for this other than us wishing for your speedy recovery is for you personally to remember why you were doing what you were to begin with.
I had a catastrophic getoff on a very valuable motorcycle several years ago that cost me most of the skin on my right arm and about an ounce of meat out of my right calf on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago…
Avoiding a homeless guy while taking an exit ramp…
And it was painful to go through the recuperation. I couldn’t sleep well for about two months (I didn’t take the Vicodin) and showering was a painful exercise in the morning, but it hasn’t blunted my desire to ride the bike again.
It’s a beautiful machine, unique and compelling. I intend to get back on a fully-repaired version of this motorcycle this Spring:
The Honda CX-650 Turbo
Manufactured for only two years, this was the most advanced motorcycle ever produced during its production run. It cost Honda much more to make than they recouped from the sale of the bikes. Digitally fuel-injected (it’s a scaled-down version of a 3-D Bosch Motronic Porsche system), liquid-cooled, shaft driven, and with only 650cc of displacement it nevertheless develops more forward thrust than you can possibly anticipate when you roll on to the throttle in 4th gear. The boost gauge on the dashboard goes “full wide” and then the bike just … gathers up … and LEAVES where it was and hurtles itself forward at a piece of road that you had better be aiming for when you twist the grip. Pulling the trigger on that bike at 60MPH in third or fourth reminds you of what it must be like with a JATO rocket strapped to the back. The engine’s power builds logarithmically over about 3 seconds and then the bike just GOES.
Lots of fun.

I still hope you heal up
kowalski (Diary) Friday, November 21st at 11:44AM EST (link)I still hope you heal up well so you can do the other things you really want to do.
Thanks about the bike. It’s one of the very few true collector Japanese bikes that were ever manufactured, and when it was built it was a real engineering milestone.
It’s very docile to ride when you are careful with the boost. Really a very nice touring bike with a “Jeckyll and Hyde” personality. The power curve is really nonlinear and very surprising if you don’t anticipate it, but the motorcycle itself is a Honda to the core — impeccably well engineered, almost gentle, with all the sharp edges rounded off.
Except one, that’s tied to the boost gauge.

I remember the commercials
Joe_Schmo (Diary) Friday, November 21st at 12:11PM EST (link)for the CX 650 turbo. They showed a top of the line Porsche 911 going around a test track with the commentary of “…this is the fastest production vehicle made…” and then the CX 650 screams by on the outside and the announcers says “…until now”.
I’ve ridden the non turbo CX 500 several times and it was a pretty good bike so I can only imagine what the CX 650 turbo was like.

How much more distressing is it when one confronts the reality that they are charged with disseminating what should be the truth to the public? The danger posed by this unsightly group not only prey upon the fortitude of the free thinker, but wear away at the foundation of the republic, grating the on cornerstone of freedom until all that is left is the cold void of ignorance thru deception…

They weren't kidding
kowalski (Diary) Friday, November 21st at 12:39PM EST (link)There are faster motorcycles and cars now, but at the time it was breathtaking and still is.
Around town it’s a little 650 with a weird exhaust note and a bunch of strange-looking technology, but even to this day between 60-120 MPH there are very few DOT certified vehicles that can touch it.
Over 130 it starts to show its age and that’s when the big iron from the “new era” of sportbikes take over. But in that range it’s an exceptional treat.

The reviews for it were interesting

In stock configuration
kowalski (Diary) Friday, November 21st at 1:28PM EST (link)In stock configuration it develops approximately a full atmosphere of boost. If you tweak it a little it will develop more than that. So it starts as a 650 that turns into a 1300 in about 3 seconds, and you can make it faster and lighter.
What you can’t change are the fundamental constraints of the way the frame is made, the forks, the suspension. The engine would push it much faster than 140 but I think the attrition rate given the bike’s suspension and chassis would be prohibitive. It has relatively narrow tires, it’s not particularly streamlined, and it’s top-heavy (and heavy period) with narrow forks compared to today’s motorcycles — all bad things when you’re doing more than 140 miles per hour and trying to turn or stop.
I had mine up in that range on a straight stretch late, late at night and I didn’t want to go any faster. The accident occured at much lower speeds, oddly enough.
But it’s important when you ride any motorcycle (or own a gun, for that matter) to really understand the limits of the fun you can have, and respect them. It’s one of those things that you just like for what it is.

After two knee arthroscopies in 14 months, as well as acquired hip bursitis from constant limping for almost two years, I am finally getting back to almost normal.
Falling 14 feet? That was a long few seconds, I bet. You were lucky not to have been damaged worse than what you were, but you got enough of a jolt I know. Prayers for healing and for a good night’s sleep. Nothing like 8 solid hours to restore the spirit.
Let me know if you figure out how to get it!

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
