This, really, was about as predictable as the sun rising in the east this morning:
My interest is in making sure we’ve got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices,” Obama told The Palm Beach Post early into a two-day swing through Florida.
But on Saturday morning, Obama said this “wasn’t really a new position.”
“I made a general point about the fact that we need to provide the American people some relief and that there has been constructive conversations between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate on this issue,” he said during a press conference in Cape Canaveral.
I don’t know why Barack Obama bothers giving speeches anymore, since everyone in America already knows what he’s going to say anyway.

Brand of consistency
paint_it_red (Diary) Saturday, August 2nd at 11:38PM EST (link)Maybe we’re being too harsh about the inconsistency thing. Obama consistently:
Changes his stance on important issues when polls indicate his previous stance has become unpopular. He is so consistent about doing this that he sometimes changes his positions on the same issue multiple times.
Denies that he has changed his position at all.
Offers no rationale for the change from his previous position that shows why he changed his mind.
Changes his position towards the end of the week, often Fridays, when there will be less news coverage of it. Also, he seems to change more often when there are other big news items going on, (such as other changes of positions on key issues). This time he’s paired the drilling change with reneging on his commitment to at least 1 town hall with McCain.

Constructive conversation in the Senate?
Michael Dugas (Diary) Saturday, August 2nd at 11:57PM EST (link)Ok say I take “…there has been constructive conversations between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate…”
and I let it just drift on by without saying all that I COULD, both comedic and dramatic. Just ignore it outright. ( I know it’s extremely tempting but please
bear with me.)
Now, the question I am left with, laying right there in front of me…IMPOSSIBLE to ignore, is, Senator Obama, given your campaigning for the job of President when have you actually BEEN in Washington to take part in any of theses so-called “constructive” conversations about energy policy? Where you networking with your “peeps” at home here while holding your revival and giving your sermon in Germany? Maybe that’s why you were too busy to visit our wounded soldier’s. It would have been such a sacrifice for you to delay or cancel your shopping trip and visit those who have sacrificed parts of their bodies and minds at the behest of their Commander in Chief….the very job
you feel you are destined to have.
Was the shopping trip successful? Did you find that first edition Mein Kampf
you wanted?

Suggestion for John McCain to help the American people and create an immediate economic stimulus to the American economy.
mccainsupporter Sunday, August 3rd at 4:51AM EST (link)Democrats under the leadership of Barack Obama want to effectively give away in trust our offshore exclusive economic zone by preventing any current offshore development. Under the 1982 United Nations Law of the Seas Convention the US has an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles and mineral seabed rights up to 350 nautical miles extending along the Continental shelf. A nautical mile is 6080 feet so our exclusive economic zone extends about 240 miles and mineral seabed rights extend 420 miles. The US has the world’s largest offshore exclusive economic zone totaling 4.4 million square miles. In comparison, the total land area of the United States is only 3.4 million square miles. Because we have the world’s largest offshore coastline which is twenty-five percent greater than our land area, it only makes common sense that we exploit our offshore resources to achieve our energy independence.
The best way to effectively exploit our offshore resources and really help the average American is to divide up the 4.4 million square miles of US offshore economic zone among the 218 million Americans adults who are 18 years and older according to the 2003 US census. Because a square mile equals 640 acres, there would be 2.816 billion offshore acres to be divided among the 218 million American adults. Every adult in the US would be entitled to 12.8 acres. This would be a takeoff from the forty acres and a mule theme except it would be offshore. A lottery could be set up to randomly assign 12.8 acres to every American. The resulting lottery would create ten of thousands of instant American millionaires whose acreage abuts known contiguous offshore oil fields. A market to buy and sell acreage rights could be created which would put money into the pockets of those who acreage contains unknown oil potential. Turning over the acreage to ordinary Americans to collect leasing revenues and royalty rights will empower Americans and stimulate the economy. We do not need the Department of Interior and politicians to argue over the next fours which tracts can be leased and have that money going into the general treasury. Give the land to every American and they can expeditiously see to the leasing of the land. Limousine liberals and wacko environmentalists can finally keep their mouths shut and instead use their own checkbooks to buy up acreage and prevent development if they choose with the acreage they buy from ordinary Americans. Let Obama and the Democrats tell the American people that they are better trustees of the offshore land and that each American is not entitled and should not profit from their 12.8 acres of offshore land. Leasing and royalty payments are not insignifcant even for small acreage. An example is east of Fort Worth Texas where natural gas drilling companies are paying 25 percent royalties and $3000 leasing payments to owners of quarter acre homes for natural gas drilling rights under their homes.
Windfall Profits Tax
Steve Maley (Diary) Sunday, August 3rd at 9:06AM EST (link)Two weeks ago this was the centerpiece of Obama’s energy policy. It would be interesting to find out by what mechanism Barack expects a tax on profits to translate to lower gasoline prices.

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, August 3rd at 10:47AM EST (link)Go find us a link more than 3 days old where BO has supported not just “lowering gas prices”, but actions by the government and by industry that, in fact, WOULD lower gas prices.

In point of fact the most over-used and abused clause in the Constitution is the “Commerce Clause”. You people have used it to justify nationalizing damn near anything and if we ever find five SCOTUS justices who will actually read both the Commerce Clause and the 10th Amendment, most of the government would be vaporized – a good thing. No, actually, a very good thing.
That said, fuel happens to be something that DOES fall under the CC. So, without regard to Senator McCain’s silly statement above, drilling is an exercise that the feds can overrule the states on at any time.
Hopefully, the McCain Administration will recognize this and will not only tell CA and FL that they can stuff their complaints, but they will make it impossible for the Greenies to sue for any environmental/habitat reason to stop any oil drilling/oil refining/nuclear power/wind power(got that Sen. Kennedy/Kerry) project.
No, the point is, did he oppose offshore oil drilling in the first place? Yes or no? That's all -- NT
