It's another of those media moments that became fossilized
civil truth (Diary) Monday, March 23rd at 10:47AM EST (link)Sort of like the red states versus blue states divide (leading to the title of this site), which was just a random choice by the networks that suddenly became fixed for all time. The weirdness, of course, is that Red, which had been the color associated with Communists for generations, suddenly became the color affixed to the Republican Party. Major irony here, but I digress.
Of course you’re correct that the final vote count most closely approximated to 53% vs. 46%. However, earlier on in the cycle, the media had spread the 52 to 48 ratio, and that was fixed into the popular memory, including a video (“52 to 48 with Love” – can’t find a link)) that got wide distribution after the election. Like what happened with red and blue states, the Obama and McCain supporters became labeled as 52 and 48.
It’s just one of those historical inaccuracies that’s taken on a life of its own with its attendent associations.
