Gun Owners of America linked to Marxist McChesney: updated 8/17/10

Ladies and gentlemen. This post is an update to the swirling controversy I created a few days ago when I discovered Gun Owners of America was a “charter member” of neo-Marxist Robert McChesney’s FreePress/Save the Internet think tank. Here is the link to that article. And a “reminder” screen shot showing GOA on the Charter Member list with other progressive movers and shakers such as ACLU, Craig’s List, Move. On, SEIU, CREDO and Media Matters. I did check this morning before writing this post just to make sure, and yes, their name is still on the list. I know that many of you have waited with bated breath for any update so here we go.

Save the internet members 1

One concerned reader at RedState Kenny S. contacted Larry Pratt, Executive Director of GOA, immediately after reading my post and the reader tells us via a comment that he received a reply almost immediately in the form of a link to a letter GOA sent to Congress in April of 2006 advocating “Net Neutrality.” Here is the bottom-line position of GOA according to their letter, at least at the time.

GOA urges you to insist upon Network Neutrality when revamping the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure.

That same reader contacted Pratt himself via e-mail and got this response:

Hi Kenny,

At the time GOA supported net neutrality we were concerned that AOL and others might continue to block pro-second amendment issues.

The issue has now become one of government control of the internet and we are 100% opposed to that.

Larry Pratt

Executive Director

Gun Owners of America

http://gunowners.org

Pratt’s letter was four years old and didn’t mention a thing about wanting to be taken off the neo-Marxist’s “list” so I felt it best to get a statement directly from the horse’s mouth. I had been trying since Friday to contact Pratt via e-mail but had gotten no response.

In an effort to quell the numerous e-mails and DMs from twitter I received on this issue from fearful members and prospective members of GOA asking for an update, I phoned Pratt this morning and spoke with him directly.

Pratt immediately informed me he had already given a “statement,” referring to his reply to Kenny S. above. I asked him if that was then his official “statement” and he replied yes it was. I asked him if he had made any efforts or even wanted to make any efforts to have his organization’s name removed from McChesney’s list. This was his extremely nonchalant reply:

We’ve been trying to, but at the time we had our name put on the list we were working with Matt [writer's note, he said "Matt" but is actually "Mark"] Green of MoveOn.org. He is the one who put our name on the list and Green is no longer with MoveOn so we don’t know how to handle this.

Hey Mr. Pratt. This sounds like the dog ate my homework excuse. Did it ever occur to you that maybe you should contact FreePress directly about this? This writer doesn’t know what is more disturbing here: that GOA was at least at one time working with the ultra-radical group MoveOn or that this is their excuse for still being on the list. I asked Pratt if he was going to keep trying to get GOA removed. He said he was, but was unsure how he was going to go about it. Mr. Pratt, since you sound like you could be “challenged” in this area I’m going to help you out a little bit. I’m gonna give you the link to the Save the Internet contact page. It just happens to be at the top right hand corner of the same page your org’s name is listed.

And Mr. Pratt. I am going to send you via e-mail a link to this story and follow-up periodically to see what is happening. Because of the many concerns I have seen from current and prospective members my advice to you is to work extremely quickly to have your name removed from McChesney’s list.

I also asked Pratt if he knew at the time McChesney was a neo-Marxist and he stated “no” that he was working with MoveOn at the time and had he known about McChesney he never would have put GOA on his list. I will again re-iterate what I stated earlier. It behooves any organization or individual to research and do their homework before giving money, putting names on lists, associating with them or becoming “charter members.”

Rest assured I will be keeping tabs on this. And I am sure many others will as well.

FYI anyone wishing to contact Gun Owners of America directly all contact info is on their website.

Great work Lady I, GOA response was pathetic

fpete13527 (Diary) Tuesday, August 17th at 1:18PM EST (link)

At least from this, it sounds like the GOA is acting pitifully, regardless of whether they are pulling an NRA-type sell out or because they are completely incompetent. It sounds like both. GOA seems to currently be a CLEAR DETRIMENT to both the First and Second Amendments.

I can’t see going anywhere near this organization unless they CLEARLY and DEFINITIVELY retract support of NN . I’m also going to speak about their hypocrisy and ineptitude to all my numerous gun owner friends.

What I truly care to offer regarding Mr. Pratt’s phone response would require the extensive use of a term similar to “bovine excrement”.

So then, I’ll leave it at this for you to take care of, Ms. L.I.O.:

How about offering Mr. Pratt this suggestion……..

—————

Maybe send a certified letter to the powers that be with a legal demand notice to remove any and all G.O.A. mentions and involvement in ‘Free Press’ and all affiliates ?

The address:

Free Press
40 Main Street, Suite 301
Florence, MA 01062-3100

—————

Now if I can think of that, I’m sure someone with a real organization having all them lawyerin’ folks hangin’ on can do so as well.

Then again, that should have been done already.

Go git ‘em, L.I.O.

Cheers !

Kenny, I just sent Pratt a link to this post..

he’s a big boy and hope he gets it. Although after our convo I’m not really sure he does. And you were right. No anger on either side. Mainly just asked him a few questions and advised him he needs to get his name off of there. Post haste.

Thank you so much for your work on this subject. I’d heard nothing of it, but it takes the watchful eye of many to ensure that good orgs like GOA can keep their message pure.

I am looking forward to their formal response, hopefully they close the loop as this post suggests.

It just goes to show that ANY group that snakes into DC...

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Tuesday, August 17th at 3:47PM EST (link)

will eventually tap dance with the disgusting left. I believe that once a person finds out that a group is no longer supporting their ideals that they cease to give that organization money and find someone else to send those dollars to who is on YOUR same wave-length. It appears that both the NRA and GOA have some “progressives” at the top and are utilizing CONSERVATIVES money to move in the cesspool of DC.

Disgusting is the perfect word...

And here after that fiasco with the NRA (just after I bought my husband a lifetime membership) I thought GOA was the place to go so I got a one year membership with GOA to try them out. I even went to the trouble to tell the guy who runs our local Certified Handgun License class about it so he could tell his students, and he in turn, signed up for GOA. Now? Unless they remove their name from that website yesterday, that’s the last $25 of my money they will ever receive and I’ll be sure to let LoneStar Handgun know as well. It’s disappointing and frustrating. How can they not see that government control of the internet will eventually lead to censorship? They are shooting themselves in the foot. (Pun intended).

I was anti-Obama before it was cool.

Ugggh!

cngerms66 Wednesday, August 18th at 2:20PM EST (link)

I have recently become very disgusted with the NRA and declined to renew my membership. I never became a lifetime member so that I could voice my opinion and proxy vote via my wallet every year; it’s worth the extra dues money to have this little bit of power and say. THIS VERY WEEK, I was going to join GOA in lieu of the NRA, but now …….. I could friggin’ barf! I guess it’s time to take a closer look a SAF or maybe a state-based advocacy group. What’s the deal with our “pro-gun” folks nowadays? Does there have to be a snake under EVERY STINKING ROCK???

JadedByPolitics, you are so correct, and I am intractably disgusted by the fact that you are so correct.

LIO, you’ve done yeoman’s work here, and I thank you for informing us of this situation.

Jeff

I wouldn't pull the GOA off your list yet.

BA Cyclone (Diary) Thursday, August 19th at 10:58AM EST (link)

For now, it appears to me to be honest oversight or a mistake. Even though “working with MoveOn.org” is troubling…

However regardless of that, I would still definitely investigate the state-based group(s). I do have a quality one in my area that I have yet to join, but fully intend to myself…they are naturally much better tuned to local issues than any national org could be.

ladyimpactohio (Diary) Thursday, August 19th at 5:14PM EST (link)

and no, I am not going to pull them off any list. Especially now that I find they were working with MoveOn. That was an astonishing moment. Will still keep a watchful eye on. Here is the LINK showing they are still on the “member list.” Also got a screen shot of it.

2nd Amendment

wahrheit Friday, August 20th at 9:58AM EST (link)

Could someone please explain to me why these words are in the 2nd Amendment:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State…”
If the right is individual, is there some reason the writers of this mucked it all up with reference to an arms-bearing organization and not simply to individuals of the republic, as they did so clearly everywhere else?

Hi! I’m a retread of truthandbeauty! I like being banned! It makes me feel like I am not alone in an uncaring and hostile universe!

Hi Warheit...... I'll offer an explanation in the form of a book you can read.

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 10:04AM EST (link)

It’s called “The Founders’ Second Amendment: The origin of the right to bear arms.”

Author is Stephen P. Halbrook, a Constitutional attorney and appears before The Supreme Court in matters ’2A’.

The book deals with your question in our founders’ own words.

Cheers !

But isn't the short answer "the definition of Militia has changed over time" ?

acat (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 10:25AM EST (link)

At least, my understanding is that at the time the bill of rights was written, it was understood that “the militia” was every able-bodied man, and that they were all expected to have their own firearms….

Acat... I wouldn't say 'changed', I'd say 'expanded'.

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 10:40AM EST (link)

Covered in the book..

Now, it also depends on who you ask as to what the definition of ‘militia’ happens to be.

Hence the danger.

The Militia Act of 1792 is still on the books

Why a book?

wahrheit Friday, August 20th at 10:40AM EST (link)

I guess my hope was to hear some simple explanation. I know there are vast writings and arguments about this. And each side has their interpretation.
Ultimately, we would have to say that any of the clauses of the Constitution are open to interpretation and that there is no such thing as a clear straightforward one. In that sense, it becomes a matter of how the given justices feel about the clause, which, we can reasonably assume, is a matter of their own personal views and reasoning. Hence, every justice is an activist and every new interpretation (aka precedent) a new reading.

Hi! I’m a retread of truthandbeauty! I like being banned! It makes me feel like I am not alone in an uncaring and hostile universe!

That's why I offered the book as explanation.

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 10:50AM EST (link)

There actually is a rather simple explanation. However, the history behind that, in my humble opinion, should be part and parcel of our education system, as without the 1st and 2nd Amendments, our nation would not exist……. the two amendments are totally tied together – the 1st wouldn’t exist without the 2nd and vice-versa.

The book is about 80% in the founders’ own words as to why.
All sourced, footnoted and corroborated for accuracy.

The remainder of the book, Mr. Halbrook deals with past and up-to-publishing-date current SCOTUS and other interpretations.

Note: The book was published in 2008.

History

wahrheit Friday, August 20th at 11:06AM EST (link)

The problem with history is that it is also wide open to interpretation. The biggest thing, too, about history is that why something was done in one time and place does not usually translate to another.
But on one thing I agree, way more reading of the English political history and philosophy and the French Enlightenment writers would move a lot of these debates into the realm of reason rather than personal prejudice. Hey, even some Americans being able –like Jefferson, Adams, Franklin et al.– to read the main inspirations for ideas of liberty and personal freedom in the original French might not be a bad thing, too.

Hi! I’m a retread of truthandbeauty! I like being banned! It makes me feel like I am not alone in an uncaring and hostile universe!

The clauses are pretty straightforward.

realskinny (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 12:30PM EST (link)

They only become a problem of interpretation when someone wants to twist them to suit their own wishes.

Militia

wahrheit Friday, August 20th at 10:56AM EST (link)

I guess we’re seeing here in miniature what goes on on the court. Even those who support the belief that everyone has a right to a gun can’t quite put their fingers on what the clause says. Even “militia” is under dispute. Most people would think of what it has always been: an organized group of people acting on behalf of some other group of people as a defense mechanism. But now we have someone weighing in with the notion that a militia can be “unorganized”. That kind of sounds like a recipe for disaster, but, hey, Somalia and places like that seem to operate in some fashion like that and who is to say it’s not possible.

Hi! I’m a retread of truthandbeauty! I like being banned! It makes me feel like I am not alone in an uncaring and hostile universe!

Warheit, it's all far beyond just the Right to own a gun.

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 11:13AM EST (link)

The Second Amendment is based on the rule of law being in the people’s hands and that when under duress or at the heel of a tyrannical governing entity, a God-Given Human Right to self defense on an individual basis and preservation of the Republic exists.

Please read the book. It will be a true education. It was for me and I thought I was fairly well-versed in 2A before doing so…… and no, I’m not an attorney, nor do I play one on TV.

Please try and remember what I said just above though….. 1A and 2A are inseparable – neither would exist without the other.

Kenny, this guy's not posting here in good faith.

Okay. Just thought I'd point it out. nt

tcgeol (Diary) Friday, August 20th at 12:06PM EST (link)

It is law, though, whether you like the idea or not and has been for over 200 years. The unorganized militia is the founder’s ideal defense.
