That womens feelings about you are representative of most of the citizens of DC, including most of congress and the media. Turns out, you're not supposed to leave your hometown no matter what congress plans to do:

I never disrespected the woman. I never talked to her. The "filth" I was referring to in the diary was garbage, etc. Especially on the mall. In the subways. On the streets. I think you are reading words into this that are not here. Homeless people do not "abhor" me. Most homeless are that by choice. I am merely pointing out that somewhere, somehow, and via someone, she certainly had the idea that no one had a "right" to be there except her, the locals, and especially the man in the White House. DC will always be the focal point of rallys, sit-ins, protests. It's not going to change. And besides, the libs have a rally planned for Jan. 15. Wonder how she's gonna react then. I am SURE not the same way as when I was there...

"Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds."

Bonus points if the person knows who said that. More bonus points if the light of reason shines through their skulls.

and was the birthplace of my parents and grandparents. My family has seen World War I, WWII, Vietnam, the riots following the assassination of MLK, Jr., every Presidential cortege, inauguration and parade from the steps of the Capitol. We've never seen anything like the Tea Party on September 12, 2009.

Whoever the woman was, she was mistaken. If she really is homeless, she is likely mentally ill, as there are ample resources here for people who need help and only the mentally disabled avoid it. Many, many private charities run shelters and soup kitchens, including Catholic Charities. She was not really inconvenienced by the presence of the demonstrators.

Because the District of Columbia belongs to all Americans, we natives have no greater claims on the city than others, and most of us are happy to have you all come here and see this magnificent city. Especially when you come to defend the Constitution.

I can't believe this diary is so disrespecting to the woman. How about some consideration? Maybe her favorite place to eat was too crowded to go into. Maybe she was tired. What about understanding why she felt the way she did? This is human nature to be feel intruded upon even if we don't own it or it's a public resource. A few weeks ago I joked with a friend that the new poor of the recession were crowded out my public use things like having to wait for a computer at the library, not being able to be seen at the free clinic because it was full for the day. The most conservative area I've been here in the south are AWFUL about new people being there. I've heard the same thing from other people in small cities. A few weeks ago there were protestors downtown, it took me an hour longer to run my errands. Yes I felt like they intruded on my street! Do I really think I have more of a right to the street, the library, the free clinic more than they do? No of course not and I've told many people about the clinic hoping they would utilize their services but we all get used to how things are any change will make us feel a little intruded upon. It's just human nature.

" I had been to DC twice before during the GWB administration. The town at that time was seedy, full of homeless and a lot of filth"

So the homeless are included in the filth? She was homeless. She still deserves respect as a peson.. Should the homeless be moved away so you don't have to look at her? How you view here is horrible. Her statement was not appropriate but how you view her is awful. I finally understand why republicans are seen by some as being uncompassionate and not caring about the poor.

however I am fairly certain she was homeless, her Messiah is in the White House; and she saw us as "invaders" in her "home." I agree 100% with what you are saying, however I am certain this woman wouldn't understand anything about free markets. This was a time when unfortunately I had to make the decision of whether I should say something or walk away. And because of concerns for my personal safety I decided to say nothing and walk away.
