PalinMania-Fear and Loathing in Lib Land

When Palin announced several months ago she was writing a book, I saw this tweet on twitter and saved it in case it might be of value at a later date.

DOD experimenting with an audio version of Palin reading her book as a replacement for water boarding. #torture

And that’s one of the nicer ones. One either “loves to hate her” or “loves to love her.” There just ain’t much middle ground when it comes to Sarah. But this tweet prompted me to do a little research, and the results were surprising. I googled the words “Sarah Palin” and here are the results:

Nov. 17, one day before her book came out: 5,780,000

Nov. 19, one day after her book came out:    7,570,000

To put this in perspective, I also googled several other “strong political oriented women” and here are the results:

7,080,000  Hillary Clinton

1,360,000  Nancy Pelosi (a day in infamy)

1,580,000  Babs Boxer (eat your heart out, Brockway)

999,000  Michele Bachmann (#2 on the Lib hit list)

463,000  Dianne Feinstein

726,000  Indira Gandhi

520,000  Benazir Bhutto

974,000  Golda Meir

650,000  Margaret Thatcher

And to be fair, I also googled some other women, not in the political arena to see how they compared:

Business

349,000  Marion Sandler (greedy)

3,510,000  Carly Fiorini, but now in the political arena

Hollywood

6,500,000  Marilyn Monroe

21,900,000  Elizabeth Taylor

149,000  Janeane Garofalo (another day in infamy)

4,440,000  Jennifer Aniston

11,400,000  Angelina Jolie

No Category, except maybe notoriety?

20,100,000  Paris Hilton

But then I saw this tweet, and I realized I left an important one out of the mix:

I wish Carrie Prejean would run for governor of Alaska and Sarah Palin would make a sex tape. #freakyfriday#GOPvalues

And the google hits shocker is:

12,000,000 Carrie Prejean

This result shot the heck out of my research and where I intended to go with this diary. More hits than Palin, HRC or any of the other political women. Only Elizabeth Taylor and Paris Hilton had higher hits on google. So here we are all yapping about Sarah Palin and Carrie is getting most of the “attention.” So what does this tell us? I’m not sure. But it was fun.

Gonna leave you guys with one last tweet, this one again in reference to Palin’s book:

@LadyImpactOhio Palin should be the first one to read it. I would love to hear her do an interview about it, and explain her “process.”

BTW: Could not find any other person with more google hits than George Washington, 60,000,00

If anyone can find anyone higher, I would be interested in knowing. But I did find this:

16,900,000  Barack Obama

So with less than a year in office, a good chance he’s gonna way surpass our beloved George Washington.

Do I get the last two minutes of my life back?

This says it better than I could:

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

I was going to comment on that...

… but didn’t have time. I think civil_truth here may just be a little over-exposed. “Zero Points” is funny as heck, but not a warranted reaction (particularly given that you’re still pretty new here). While I don’t really think that google analysis is recommended reading; I think it can be an interesting thing to compare.

I just couldn't find any point to the diary content

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, November 19th at 2:39PM EST (link)

I just saw all these numbers with people’s names and couldn’t figure out what meaning or significance it had. Hence I felt stupider than when I started.

Probably I did overreact, but I would have appreciated some attempt at interpreting or distilling some meaning – some explication of the diary title – and still would given that the author has had good things to say in prior diaries.

in Ohio, and I probably should have stuck to housework and stayed off the computer. I was so surprised about some of the google “hits” it was a pale attempt to make a cohesive story that just didn’t work. Thanks for your honest assessments.

Am not sure if someone really said that, but am saying it now.

I was probably too harsh for what appears to be an aberration

..;but your reply adds fuel to the fire. But rather than escalate, let me try to bring the ship to a more level keel.

1) You have previously written excellent diaries. I liked the chemotherapy analogy of your first diary, and your second diary “Guns, Ammo and Small Blond Women” was partricular noteable for being so heartfelt.

2) Indeed, this past history was one reason why I was so taken aback by what seemed to be a rambling accumulation of numbers and names that I could find no point in and made me feel bewildered rather than enlightened by the end of it (see my reply to mschmitt). It’s hard to say why I reacted quite so strongly.

3) My reaction has nothing to do with possible “PalinMania” on my part – in fact, what was so frustrating was that you whatever you were trying to say about Sarah got totally lost by the end.

So to bring this to a close

4) I would still be interested in knowing what was your message to us; and

5) I sure hope you stay around RedState and continue to contribute.

Constructively speaking,

mschmitt (Diary) Thursday, November 19th at 4:30PM EST (link)

The anti-Palin tweets could be featured more prominently (as they are the core of your thesis), google trends can be an interesting thing to tie in with the overall number of websites (ie, if the number of websites grows out of proportion with the searches, it may indicate ‘interturf’), etc.

But, since your title is about Palin fear and loathing, it would really be helpful to break down (somehow) whether those are negative or pro-Palin websites. I was confused about that aspect of your diary as well — it is really just a raw measure of “interest” and not necessarily indicative of lefty bile (even though we can suspect that it is).

You’ve set the bar so high for yourself already. All in all, you’ve already got an impressive body of work (given your short period of time here) and obviously no one wants to see you get discouraged.
