Absence of Erroneously-Named Employee Free Choice Act Has Union Bosses Getting Antsy

From the diaries by Erick

Union bosses have the federal government all sewn up. They’ve got a lock on the White House, they’ve got a lock on the Senate, as well as the House of Representatives. So, what’s the problem?

Immediately following the election, the President-Elect appointed the AFL-CIO’s Ellen Moran to be White House Communications Director (she has since moved on to the census-controlling Commerce Department), SEIU’s Patrick Gaspard to be White House Director of Political Affairs, SEIU’s Anna Burger and AFL-CIO boss Richard Trumka to his “Economic Recovery Advisory Board,” and SEIU’s Dennis Rivera is currently running the White House’s war on health care. On the day of Barack Obama’s inauguration, the newly-annointed President appointed hard-core union radical Wilma Liebman to the Chairmanship of the National Labor Relations Board. Since then, the Administration has appointed dozens (or more) of hard core unionists to various posts in the government and given union bosses some key wins early on like the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and union-only Project Labor Agreements. [For a broader list of union wishes fulfilled go here.]

So, why are union bosses getting antsy and feeling that they’re being shoved to the side?

Perhaps it is because the unions’ hand-picked president is not performing to their expectations?

As the Boston Globe reports this morning:

[L]abor’s agenda has been pushed down on the priority list by the very lawmakers they helped elect, leaving some union backers frustrated.

Labor is eager to win passage of a “card check’’ bill, a measure that would make it easier for workers to form unions, but the White House and Congress took up a Wall Street bailout plan first.

In the health care debate, labor is seeking to avoid a tax on expensive health care benefits. But President Obama, who slammed the idea during the campaign, this summer indicated he might be open to such an idea.
….

“It’s beyond belief to me,’’ said Robert Haynes, president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. While Obama and Congress inherited “a big mess’’ from Bush, Haynes said, “there aren’t any excuses anymore. If you can’t deliver health care, and you can’t deliver jobs, and if you can’t deliver [card check legislation], and you can’t figure out how to take care of the working people of this great city and country, you don’t deserve to stay in office.’’

The poor economy and the attention demanded by such issues as health care, Afghanistan, climate change, and the pending closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison have put labor unions’ concerns far down on the list in Washington, analysts and lawmakers say.

Many labor union leaders say they still have faith that Obama will push for their legislative wish list, especially the so-called card check bill to allow workers to organize unions without a secret ballot, once he gets a health care bill signed. And while unions are anxious about provisions in the health care bill that might affect union members, leaders say the larger goal of getting closer to universal health care is most important. [Emphasis added.]

When union bosses pushed their guy into the Oval Office, like a Tsunami from the Left, many had assumed that he would flood the American landscape with labor’s wish list. While he has in part, some some of the biggest ticket items on labor’s laundry list have been stalled.

Following the most expensive union campaign in history, despite the other “inherited” issues, the union agenda was also held back by some moderate Democrats, as well as the absence of Al Franken then, later, Ted Kennedy and, now, Robert Byrd.

Nevertheless, unions seem to be getting cranky that their man in the White House may let their agenda slip through the cracks before 2010 and, once the mid-terms get into full swing, the union agenda may get passed over entirely.

To echo Moe's point

What are they going to do, vote Republican?

Let’s get down to brass tacks here. How much for the ape?

Individual members might

They used to when Reagan was on the ballot. We could help by reminding them that the individual is the smallest minority, a minority of one. And if America with Republican leadership can protect the individual against everyone else’s demands, then members of unions will be safe.

If they are upset that EFCA and other Union hand-outs haven’t been granted, they’re not gonna vote for Huckabee. The individual members of the union that would vote for a republican, most likely didn’t vote for Obama to begin with.

When election time rolls around, groups like the unions and the LBGT community will be very upset with Obama. But that doesn’t mean they’ll vote for a conservative who promises the exact opposite of what they are trying to achieve.

Besides, I’m sure The One will toss them a bone from time to time.

As governor, Romney made no similar effort to amend or repeal the state law, which required employers that purchase insurance plans in Massachusetts to pay for contraceptives.

I would be interested in knowing how well unions are sitting financially

considering they went into great debt last election cycle and their union dues revenue has to be slowed considerably. I read a couple weeks ago that union membership in CA has increased 17%, how’d that happen with the big loss in jobs?

Big Labor is disappointed with Obama? They

can join hands with the illegal immigrant lobby and the homosexual lobby who are also upset with the president. The reason that Obama has not pushed promised legislation for all these left wing groups is not because he has moved to the right or come to his senses. It is because their pet issues are unpopular and Obama is afraid to spend his dwindling political capital. As bad as Obama is, imagine what it would be like if he had the courage of his convictions.

Or better yet, imagine what he would be like in a second term

suzieQ (Diary) Monday, October 12th at 6:16PM EST (link)

Right now, he cannot afford to push unpopular policies. But if he is re-elected in 2012, that would be completely different. At that point he knows he can do whatever he wants for the next four years without any real consequences for himself.

A second term??

martyinaz Thursday, October 15th at 3:33AM EST (link)

Right now we need to focus on stopping this yahoo in 2010, by voting in a Republican controlled Congress. GWB was so emasculated by the House and Senate that his second term was a failure. He had to go along for the ride, just so he could keep funding the war in Iraq. As the economy slipped deeper and deeper into the toilet,(thank you Barny Franks, Fannie, and Freddy) Bush became a laughing joke. HE COST McCAIN THE ELECTION. And look what we have to show for public stupidity. Oh boy, did we get “change”. Keep your eyes on the prize guys and gals. 2010 is a MUST win election if we wish to stop BO. Keep the Tea Parties comming. Keep the grass fires burning. Focus on 2010 as though your freedom depended on it.

Unions generally spend as much as they take in...

LaborUnionReport (Diary) Monday, October 12th at 5:22PM EST (link)

On a year-to-year basis, unons generally spend as much as they take in. On an annual basis, all unions take in more than $10 billion a year from workers, the vast majority of whom never voted to unionize but are required to pay the union as a condition of employment (they either pay or they are fired).

In 2008, however, the SEIU allegedly took out a line of credit (from Bank of America) to help elect Obama and, a few months ago, Machinists’ union president Tom Buffenbarger complained that the AFL-CIO had been using ‘creative accounting’ to mask its financial problems. Note: The AFL-CIO is a federation of about 56 unions, so Buffenbarger’s comments were related to the federation, not the individual unions.

According to this WSJ editorial, they have a debt problem

Cheryl (Diary) Monday, October 12th at 9:34PM EST (link)

and I don’t know why there isn’t more said about it. Their income has to be down. They are debt in a big way. They bet it all on the current administration. I have to wonder if they aren’t in a panic mode right now.

Of course, if they take in huge sums and only spend what they get in (you reference billions), maybe the interest and repayment on these obligations is manageable.

The bottom line is The Won is NOT going to do....

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Monday, October 12th at 6:33PM EST (link)

things that will cost him politically until after a second election. Stupid tools in the union have NO CLUE how it works. NO ONE outside the unions want Card Check and illegals will have to PRAY The Won gets elected again because it wasn’t until Bush was elected the second time that he tried to THROW US UNDER THE BUS! obtw WE WON!

Elections are year round now and the appearance’s that are needed to get re-elected are a constant so he had his moment with the “stimulus” and crap & tax (through the House) and “something” with Obamacare written all over it BUT that will be ALL because 2010 elections are right around the corner and the American Electorate is HOT to make BIG CHANGES!

To be fair

Something always seems to go wrong with a president’s hoped-for “magic second term”. GWB got McCain’ed. Clinton got impeached. Nixon got Watergated. Reagan never had a friendly Congress. The idea that a president gets to “run wild” after re-election is a powerful one in theory, but in practice something always gets in the way.

EFCA is already on the agenda, following health care

LaborUnionReport (Diary) Monday, October 12th at 8:20PM EST (link)

Folks:

As a group, for more than four years, we have been fighting (on our own time and on our own dime) to awaken America to the hallucinogenically-named Employee Free Choice Act.

Assuming (and it’s still a big assumption) that unions and the Dems are going to lose ground in 2010, they have to try to get all they can done now.

EFCA is a multi-year assault on the facts surrounding how people become unionized and what really occurs in labor relations. It is, in sum, a union bailout and, more importantly, a huge injection of the federal government into the private-sector, employee-employer relationship.

‘JadedbyPolitics’ is right in saying no one outside of unions want card check. (In fact, even many union rank and filers–especially in the trade unions–do not want card check because they know it will add to their already bloated unemployment rosters.) However, please don’t think that EFCA can’t or won’t happen. It passed the House in 2007, but that was only a dry run–everyone knew that.

With the exception of a few moderate Dems, the die has been cast. They, the absence of Robert Byrd, and the GOP are the only things stopping EFCA from being passed right now. And, unfortunately, unlike health care, EFCA and labor issues are issues that most people are unaware of.

[For example, most people didn't even realize that there was a bill introduced in the House last year to end Right-to-Work states. If people in Right-to-Work states knew about though, it could have changed the outcome in November.]

More importantly on EFCA, the business community has already done as much lobbying as it can and there is very, very little grassroots efforts to stop EFCA and the union agenda–primarily because it is an issue most people don’t know about.
