Backward on Health Care

This one’s going to be very short, also.

There’s a big problem with the way the health-care debate in this country is being framed by both Republicans and Democrats. Maybe it’s the way the media reports it, but nevertheless, the main problem in health care is cost.

When anyone talks about health care, they talk first about insuring the uninsured and expanding coverage, and cost considerations come at the end of the list. They’re always the last things to be considered, and that’s what’s killing America. That isn’t going to change regardless of who runs the system if the problem isn’t reconsidered.

Unless this country moves the COST of health care to the front of the priority list, none of the other goals are achievable over the medium to long term, even assuming you believe in them. We’re approaching the problem from the wrong end, because if the costs could be controlled and if they actually shrunk for a few years instead of relentlessly expanding at a hyperinflational rate, we could afford to insure more people. Businesses could insure more people, and individuals could insure themselves more easily.

We can’t begin to address the problems of health care in America unless reducing the cost of care and the growth of that cost is made the first priority, not the last. It’s like offering universal automobile insurance with liability coverage in a state where half the people are stealing each other’s cars and smashing them up on joy rides.

We keep spending more and more money on it, just as we do with education, and a great deal of it continues to be wasted. More will be wasted — vastly more — if the cart continues to get placed before the horse. In the end, the government will spend more money rationing care to people if the costs aren’t reduced. That’s all I have to say about health care for now.

I agree 100% with you on this, one addition is that we are talking about expanding coverage but we are not addressing the underlying problems. Medical Malpractice and the “my doctor made a mistake lottery” are causing the costs of doctors who are good at what they do to have to charge amounts comeasurate with the increase in medical liability insurance.

That's part of the problem

Physicians needing to order tests that they don’t need simply to no get sued. Their is also the problem of spending a large some for Malpractice insurance. If you place that along with a lot of other details, you sort of come up with a good defense against this.

Let’s Bankrupt the Democratic paty. Make spend all the money to defend thier candidates.

There are lots of cost factors

- The various direct and indirect costs of dealing with trial lawyers.
- Huge amounts spend on care of illegals. How many women come across the border to have anchor babies and are on their way to endless thousands of dollars of “free” health care?
- We subsidize drug development costs for much of the rest of the world.

I’m sure there are several others that could be added.

Kowalski, you're thinking sort on the same lines as I am

But the money angle is only a bit of it, they problem is that it’s not made personal or applicable. At this rate, it will simply die for now, only to return at a later time. Since I’ve finally found a place for thoughts(not here), I decided to put my brain to work and type up something.

Malpractice costs, and other thoughts on costs

$200,000 premium, 200 work hours… $100/office hour just to pay for malpractice insurance. And that could be for a family GP. People are suing dentists for not replacing a filling that later caused problems. There has to be a better way.

I agree with Rush on this one. Once insurance covered simple doctor office visits, the game was lost. Insurance is supposed to cover those big occurrences that are not expected to happen. You know, like car accidents, cancer treatment, etc., not to cover massages, simple antibiotics, GP office visits, eyeglasses, teeth cleaning, or simple composite fillings.

“If you think it’s expensive now, wait til it’s free.”
