Quick Thoughts On Palin

This morning I was woken up by a phone call from my aunt after having been awake for more than 24 hours working on a marathon job and — wham — she clocks me with the news about Sarah Palin resigning in Alaska. There’s nothing like an abrupt wake up call to get the most candid thoughts out of you, groggy and surprised, so let me share them with you.

I let it sink in for a few seconds and then I said: “That’s GOOD. In fact, it’s better than good, it’s brilliant.

I’ve read all of Erick’s comments and Josh Painter’s too, etc., and my two cents are that Palin bowing out was the right thing to do for her State, for the Republican Party and her role in it, her family, and everyone who has supported her.

Whether or not she runs for national office at the highest levels again — and I consider that to be an open question — it’s very clear to me that this decision is exactly what Bill Kristol thinks it is, and more. It’s shrewd and it’s also liberating. It unencumbers Palin from the smear campaign that her political enemies were going to continue to throw at her in Alaska, first of all. It’s the right decision for the people of Alaska: why sit there with one foot nailed to the floor while your political enemies force you to defend yourself, wasting the people’s money? If it isn’t already clear to everyone in the Western Hemisphere, the Donks wanted Palin to do exactly what that dork from Politico prescribed: go back to Alaska as a lame duck, with all the responsibilities of the Governorship on top of the Spiked Pipe™ assault to contend with.

Not anymore.

Palin has vastly increased her degrees of freedom by making this decision. She’s now free, in the words of Southwest Airlines, to “…move about the country” and I expect that’s what she’s going to do. And everyone knows that Sarah Palin is the biggest Rock Star in the Universe when it comes to getting Republicans out to events and rallies. I don’t see how resigning from the Governorship takes any gloss off of that.

My mind is racing with the possibilities the decision opens up for her and I think all the naysayers should calm down. I’m not going to spoil anything by running down my list of the things she can do much more effectively now than she could from behind the Governor’s desk in Alaska. The first thing that went through my mind this morning was: “That’s the best idea I’ve ever heard of. I can’t wait to see what’s next.”

So chill, playa-hatas! Sarah Palin has the juice.

…as a Commentator. She can appear on Hannity with Rove, et al, discussing politics. However, I expect her to do Book Tour, w/ speaking engagements and the early hustings for the Marco Rubios of this world. She needs to collect chits now, as Nixon did in 1965-66.

Over the next 12-16 monts, it will be All Sarah, All the Time.

Shameless prediction. If she helps increase our take in Congress, so much the better.

The Donks wanted her back in Alaska for another year and a half so that they could continue to lob blunt projectiles in her direction while she couldn’t move. The last thing they wanted was a Sarah Palin who has the freedom of mobility to go any place at any time and speak on any subject she wants, with the cameras and the crowds following her. I can’t wait for her to visit Massachusetts.

I'd rather see her on CNN.

Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 2:35AM EST (link)

The downside there is that fewer people would see her than they would on Fox, but the upside is that on Fox she’d be talking to the choir. And Fox already has the Huckster, too.

An even better place for her political career would be as a Fellow at the Heritage Foundation.

Than humans watch CNN. They have done extensive polling to show that the demographic breakdown of Fox viewership includes a *large* number of democrats and independents – where this game is going to be won or lost.

And she needs to write a book. That will take care of them financially for the rest of their lives. Her advance alone would be at least $6 million.

I really do believe that the best thing Sarah Palin can do right now is have much more latitude to comment and travel around the country and speak freely. The Donks are going to spin it as her “caving” under pressure but as usual they’re a bunch of slimy Necromorphs.

Palin is going to Advance In Another Direction and I intend to support her in whatever she does. She doesn’t have to be the President or the Vice President, either — the best thing Palin can be for the American people is herself. And there is NO reason to let the Left continue to punish Alaska using the governor as proxy. I see this as a very positive decision on her part, and I hope her whole family knows that we expect a lot of her. :)

At American Thinker. The whole thing is worth reading, but I think my favorite line from it is the following:

She will be back. Not for 2012. The GOP has its plans already worked out. Very clever ones, too. The Republicans will do what they always do when they’re up against it: grab an empty suit and run around shaking it in people’s faces while shouting, “Here’s the man!” By 2012, after his policies really hit home, as gas and home fuel prices triple and quadruple, as medical rationing begins, as the renewed Axis of Evil runs wild across Eurasia, Obama will be ready to drop. At that point he could be defeated by a ticket consisting of Charley Manson and Jojo the Dogface Boy. But the GOP will blow it all the same. Exactly as the party did in ’96, following the same script to the letter. They will, to coin a phrase, Mitt it up.

Heh.

This Palin announcement really has me puzzled, along with the rest of the nation (who care) which alone is really, really cool.

I don’t know what the future is for Sarah Palin, but she’s very young. Why shoot your wad now? I do think not serving your term out opens a line of criticism though. It’s all very, very interesting, and I can’t help being a fan of her’s still. She’s the anti-Obama: someone we love for what she is and what she says, not what she does. I don’t think this is a good thing in the end, but we’ve been saying we need to fight fire with fire. Well, here it is.

Palin's Latest Looks Like She Is Sounding The Trumpet

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Sunday, July 5th at 12:09PM EST (link)

Via Palin facebook:

Does this sound like a lady in retreat:

“After staying out of the public eye for most of Saturday, a day after abruptly announcing she would soon give up her job as governor, Palin indicated on a social networking site that she would take on a larger, national role, citing a “higher calling” to unite the country along conservative lines.

“I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint,” the former Republican vice presidential candidate wrote in a posting on her Facebook page.”

And she sounds pissed:

“Palin instead cast herself as a victim and blasted the media, calling the response to her announcement “predictable” and out of touch. “How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country,” the statement said. “And though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.”

How is a higher calling giving up a job you made a promise to do? I could see if she just gave no reason or said it’s none of your business or I’m not saying why but to say I have a higher calling? That isn’t right to me. Someone that finishes what they promised even when something better comes along gets my respect with a position like hers. I don’t like the Washington and media will never understand it line either. Ok the media is bad but that doesn’t mean them questioning her leaving is bad. That whole last paragraph sounds whiny to me, like a teenager that is complaining not how a grandmother should talk.

that is because it is too soon to buy it

You did a pretty good job of clairvoyance with a post suggesting maybe she will just quit a few months back. But I don’t think that even you are going to predict what is going to happen over the next 20 years. I am not predicting that Sarah can get a second act in politics like Dick Nixon had after his 1962 “Checkers” speech. All I am saying is we all just have to let be what will be, and focus more of our attention on the issues we’re dealing with in 2009.

I didn’t mean to say she won’t be a national star. I wrote the other day she should do fundraising for the gop no matter if she runs or not because she is a wallet opener. I just don’t buy the whole I’m resigning for a higher calling as a good justification or reason for her resigning, that doesn’t show good character or someone who is responsible. There are just too many things that are not connecting with what she says and does.

2) Listen to a has-been comic joke about your 14 year old daughter getting “knocked up”?
3) Watch your church be burned to the ground?
4) Listen to the staff of the person who chose you for his running mate backstab you at every opportunity?
5) Listen to the sound of crickets chirping when the party you are a part of remains silent in the face of the most vile accusations one could dream up?

You want to finish that gig? Really?

Why?

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 5th at 1:23PM EST (link)

There is no reason, well maybe one, that Governor Palin needed to incur even one dollar in legal fees fighting ethics charges.

That subject is covered well in smagar’s diary.

Bottom line, she could have referred her defense to the AKAG or to outside counsel paid for by the AG. The “legal defense fund” is BS.

#2 was an outrage and was dealt with.

The rest are nothing but politics and, like it or not, the Governor is a politician. She’s never been shy about wielding an axe, she should be prepared to deal with it when the axe wielders come for her.

I've read the diary. Twice.

Vegas_Rick (Diary) Sunday, July 5th at 1:31PM EST (link)

I don’t see where smagar tried to, or succeeded in, demonsdtrating that Palin doesn’t need a legal fund.

You’re trying to incite Josh with the same diary, and I don’t get it.

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 5th at 1:44PM EST (link)

Art Chance responded to the question posed by smagar. To save you the trouble of linking, I’ll duplicate it below. Art’s answer goes directly to the mechanism of dealing with these sorts of issues in Alaska and nothing to do with Art’s distaste for the Governor.

The two that really matter are the cases associated with the Monegan/Wooten matter, the so-called “Troopergate,” and the email controversy which is currently in court. They constitute the bulk of the true legal work and since they constitute the bulk of the State’s expenses presumably also are the cause of most of her expenses.

When the Legislature convened the Wooten-Monegan investigation, I would have written directly to the Attorney General setting out what I had done and asking him directly if my actions were within the scope of my duties as an officer of the State. If he determined that they were, I would have asked him to either defend and indemnify me or substitute the Executive Branch of the State of Alaska as the defendant in the matter. If he refused and I disagreed, I would go to the Superior Court and ask the court to make the determination. I would have to have private counsel to do that, but Alaska provides for attorney cost recovery, so I would have asked for it. As far as I know, she never did any of those things. I’m confident that the then-AG didn’t move to defy the subpoenae on his own volition, so that must have either come from the Office of the Governor or have been OK’d by the OOTG. As I’ve said before here, I’d have done that too; I or my staff would have appeared in response to a Legislative subpoena when I ran out of courts to appeal to. In any event, had there been a formal determination by the AG that her actions were within the scope of her duties and authority, the State’s Department of Law would have provided legal counsel for her and because it was the Governor, they would have contracted with private counsel to do it rather than doing it in house. She wouldn’t have really had free choice of the outside counsel, but they would have gone out of their way to find somebody she was comfortable with.

By going to the P-Board, she made it more complicated but even with that, she could have written the AG, specifically the Ethics Attorney, and asked for a determination if her actions were consistent with the Executive Branch Ethics Act; appointees and former appointees do this all the time if they are going to take outside employment or after they leave State employment. The detemination of the Ethics Attorney can be relied upon as your defense in the same way that an AG’s formal opinion can. And even if you’re sued and the opinion was wrong, the State has the legal bills and the liability, not you.

For the others that were brought directly to the AG and the P-Board, she could have followed the same process. If she trusted the Department of Law and was willing to tell them everything truthfully, the only way she would have actually needed private counsel is if they and the Superior Court had ruled that what she did was either illegal or outside the scope of her job and authority.

As far as Josh is concerned, he’s been avoiding comment on this question for months. He’s got his head in the sand, or elsewhere.

Ahhhhh, so it's a comment you are refering to, not smagars diary.

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, July 5th at 2:15PM EST (link)

1. Her supporters – the rabid variety – have made a huge deal over this. It’s not because she has administrative recourse within the State. They won’t deal with that.
2. The State is bound to defend her, assuming what she did was within the scope of her office – ie: ethical.
3. She has refused to go to the AG.
4. She’s raising private money to defend what the State would pay for at a time when that money could be used to win House seats.

It’s a matter of priorities. I don’t think much of hers on this point.

Seems like he had a pretty good plan to deal with what she had to deal with – looks like she should have talked to him.

You and I will continue to disagree on the remaining points. You think what she has been through is politics as usual, I say it is beyond the pale. She has never wielded the axe of personal destruction – ever. Her enemies have, and it worked.

Maybe it’s time to talk for the next few months about Hillary’s confusion over her sexuality, or Chelsea’s boyfriend / girlfriend, or how white Obama’s children look and whether that disqualifies them to be down with the struggle, or how many people Obama’s drunken excuse for a father killed while intoxicated, or light a few candles across the country for Mary Jo Kopechne, or do a little front-pager on how Ted Kennedy’s illness is a result of the use of crack. What the hell – if this is the way it should be, let’s get on with it. Otherwise it seems we are playing with one hand tied behind our backs, doesn’t it? Maybe if we’re lucky, some of the crap I mentioned will make its way to the MSM.

And again, it’s not so much about Palin. It is the consistency with which Republicans not only will not defend one of their own, they won’t even defend themselves (George Bush).

Palin would have been also breaking a “promise” to be the Governor of Alaska, and would be leaving for a “higher calling.” No one knows what she means yet by a “higher calling” but, in my mind there is nothing “whiny” or acting like a teenager” in her reasons to decide as she has. If anything, she has given Parnell a chance at success or failure in the role of Governor, which can be more than helpful should he run in 2010. I say “if” because he will now be the bearer of the attacks by the Libs.

I suspect that now Obama, has given orders to Axelrod, to get the exterminator Emmanuel to send a surge in ACORN forces to Alaska to start digging for dirt on Parnell.

If your defination of "proselytizing" is in a religious sense

then I can’t agree. Palin has never made many references to her religion, even though some tried to attach her to a “voodoo creepy church.” On the other hand, if your are using the term as “an act of attempting to convert people to another opinion or point of view” then I could never fault her for fighting against the Socialistic agenda being pushed by the current Liberal Administration. Huckabee ran as the Pastor in Chief, and was soundly rejected. So far as I know, Palin has never sat in that pew.

For me it all goes back to her reason for “stepping down now.” I will not go into all of it again, as so many here have already done so. I buy her reasoning that the people in Alaska don’t need a lame duck, and to spend their money on keeping her in that useless position. I have no idea what path she will take, and if she will be successful in whatever direction she takes, that is left to be seen. I do have faith in her ability to connect with people like me and Joe the Plumber. I do have faith in her ability to raise money for candidates she supports. I do have faith in her support of families. I do have haith in her support of special needs children. I do believe that Sarah Palin can do much more, not as the Governor, but, as a private citizen that can push back on a runaway media that has been relentless in their pursuit to ruin not only the voice, but also the person.

Doc, even if she does not go on to win the presidency, or even if she doesn’t run for the presidency, she can still answer a higher calling (not in any religious sense) which is so desperately needed in our country now headed for total destruction under Obama and the Libs. Whatever she does, if she can have a voice against the insanity, she will be an automatic winner for me. She had no ability to do that while being a Governor.

Scope, I appreciate your passion and support for Palin

and I actually agree with 99 percent of your post. I still don’t see why she had to stop being the governor. Many leaders accomplish a lot in lame duck status because they don’t have to worry about running again. I get your reasoning, but it is not an air tight case, most lame ducks finish their terms. I mean, she ran for the term knowing she would be a lame duck.

Having said the above, I agree with the rest you said. I want Palin to help us. I want her to draw crowds and money. I hope she can help all the causes you mention and I wish her all the best.

The question I ask regarding Palin

youthgrunt (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 12:35AM EST (link)

is what is the best thing that she could do for the state of Alaska?

I think her answer is: remove the political target from the state and then work to get Republicans a majority in the House of Reps in 2010. She is uniquely in a position to do that.

In other words, I think this move is doing exactly what she feels is her responsibility to her State.

I don’t think it is the best move for her politically. The knock on her was a lack of experience (although just as much as our current President), and with this move she keeps that argument in play. But if she is successful filling the role of a Newt in 1994, then I think it would be a wash politically–or maybe a net positive.

Mom, this is how:

Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 2:55AM EST (link)

It’s a higher calling if the state will be better off with Parnell in the Governor’s seat than with her. If her presence is doing more harm to the state (costing money, etc.) than it’s helping, her departure is for the good of the state.

There’s nothing whiney about pointing out the truth–Obama left the Senate to pursue the Presidency, only he didn’t resign–he just quit fulfilling his duties. Hillary left her post to run, then become Sec. of State. Some may say there’s a difference, but in respect to your question, there is none–they both promised to do one thing, then did another, and the press didn’t care a bit.

My own take on it is that there is no big moral or ethical breach if any Governor decides to leave office before the term is up for any reason. States have Lt. Gov’s to step in, and they do. (The oath of office for a Governor isn’t even as solemn as marriage vows in San Francisco, at least in so far as resigning from the position goes.) It’s already happened at least twice in the last couple of years (not for savory reasons), and there should be another soon in South Carolina (not because he has to, but for the “higher calling” of party and personal damage control), so she will be the fourth, if I haven’t forgotten anybody. All those states will still be around next year, and so will Alaska.

Yes, the left will use it as a bludgeon. There’s no reason we have to help them. You call it “giving up a job” and she called it “passing the ball.” Whatever we call it, as long as she isn’t passing it to the other side, it’s only a matter of timing whether it’s now or in 18 months.

Direct attack against "DOUBLE STANDARD"

Deskpilot (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 5:40AM EST (link)

if the blistering upper cut that she lands against the MSM:
“Palin instead cast herself as a victim and blasted the media, calling the response to her announcement “predictable” and out of touch. “How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country,” the statement said. “And though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.”
The MSM laid no criticism against BHO whatsoever for his leaving his position as Senator, elected by the people of Illinois to serve SIX years. He only represented them for no more than TWO before he shifted into presidential campaign mode 250% of his time. and in his two years allegedly representing the people of Illinios, exactly what did he do – NOT A DANGED THING. No sponsoring of legislation of any import; no challenge to the status quo; NOTHING.
Sarah Palin, though, accomplished many positive, and possibly a few negative, things that she promised the Alaskans that she represents, She has a Lt.Gov with whom she sees eye to eye with and is quite capable of taking over the business of Alaska. One of her CORE philosophies was to be a godd steward of the people’s money. It appears that because of the attacks on HER as Sarah, not as the Governor, she saw the waste of the people’s money that these claims were creating.

If you look at Friday through the prism of “What’s right for Alaska,” as opposed to “What’s in it for Sarah Palin,” her decision makes makes perfect sense taken in context with all of the attacks against her and her family.

Good Question: “What’s right for Alaska,” as opposed to “What’s in it for Sarah Palin,”

This is exactly what it boils down to. People cannot not see the integrity and ethics that were on full display in this one act. Our society is so out of touch with people of true character that they cannot understand it when it is presented to them.

Higher Calling

It is a higher calling because if she stayed on as Alaska Govenor, the state would have wasted time and money defending her against ethics complaint, after ethics complaint.

The state is now free from that and she knows that the goals that she had as governor will be fulfilled with Shaun Parnell at the helm.

Instead of fighting off allegations constantly, Alaska can move forward with the pipeline etc. Anyone who doesn’t get this is pretty dense in my book.

Thanks Everyone

Also, if you want to find something on Facebook, there’s a search bar near the top right corner of the site where you can search for friends, pages, etc. Usually, a politician’s official Facebook page will ask if you want to “Become a Fan”, instead of whether you want to “Join Group”. Hope that helps!

But this much we do know. She is making progressive, liberal and elitist heads explode on both sides of the political spectrum.

I think she should’ve stayed & finished the job. I know most people won’t like response here, but the one thing on Sarah’s side all along was trust, and I think that’s been damaged somewhat regardless of the reasons.

Mike Coffman is a Iraq War veteran and now representative from Colorado. He’s held several positions in our State government, but never finished one of them. It was the main reason why I supported an opponent in the primary. I’m glad he was elected, but do hope he actually finishes the job the people elected him to do this time.

Finish the Job

Night Twister

To what benefit was it to Alaska if she would have stayed? Alaska could have paid millions in legal bills defending her against frivolous ethics complains. The government would have been ham strung and the goals that Alaskans elected her for would have fallen by the wayside.

Her Government would have been labeled a miserable failure and in the end, she would be out of politics and relegated to a failed govenor. when the left hates something – you know it’s good.

The benefit is finishing what she was elected to do.

NightTwister (Diary) Monday, July 6th at 9:24PM EST (link)

If she’s done with running for office, then it doesn’t matter to me. But if she runs for POTUS in 2012, there will be a lot of questions about her ability to stand up to the scrutiny on the national stage again. The ads would pretty much write themselves.

What, because of this? Come on. That’s all the pukes in the media were going to do no matter what. It’s all they’re doing now. It’s all they will do if it looks like she’s going to run for office, and it’s all they were and are going to do in between. Liberals are terrified of Sarah Palin. It is visceral. BDS is a mild affliction compared to what Sarah Palin does to liberals.

Please do not worry that the media will be tougher on Sarah Palin because of anything that happened this week. They are in full nuclear-attack mode. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. It doesn’t matter what she does or does not do.

The media wanted her scalp. Now they think they got it. I’m with Kowalski: I think they should have been more careful about what they wished for.

Hardly anyone understands sexual politics better than Camille Paglia. This is what she wrote after the VP debate:

lthough nothing will sway my vote for Obama, I continue to enjoy Sarah Palin’s performance on the national stage. During her vice-presidential debate last week with Joe Biden (whose conspiratorial smiles with moderator Gwen Ifill were outrageous and condescending toward his opponent), I laughed heartily at Palin’s digs and slams and marveled at the way she slowly took over the entire event.

Just so. Sarah Palin is a Bene Gesserit witch. And she’s pissed. I don’t think the pukes in the media have a clue what’s headed their way.

The difference is the now have something tangible at which to point.

I agree the media will go after her with everything they have without ceasing. If she ever does get elected to a high office, it’ll be entertaining just to sit back and watch their heads explode on a daily basis.

For me, I think I’m tired of both PDS and the Palin Bots. I was hoping she’d go back quietly to Alaska and do a good job there, but it would appear neither side was willing to let that happen.

Not me. I was hoping she would come to Florida to draw crowds and raise money for Mark Rubio. And then go on and do the same thing for conservatives in every other state where the GOP Establishment has already decided who’s won next year’s primary.

Right now she is the highest profile conservative politician. If she does not run in 2012, whoever she endorses will win the Republican nomination. I do not think she will have as much influence if she runs. Her strongest role will be to galvanize the conservatives. As polls show, conservatives make up the largest voting block. She needs to find the message that brings them all in for conservative Republican candidates.

jchild314 (Diary) Wednesday, July 8th at 10:38PM EST (link)

I was an early ‘Fred Head’. Looking back, boy do I wish he would have been the one to choose Sarah. I truly believe that the way things are going, there are going to be just a few of us ‘American’s’ that are going to be SICK of both parties. Most of us know that a 3rd party campaign just doesn’t seem to work. That is where, in my opinion, Sarah Palin, if she gets the right advice, can truly ‘Change’ our government. BO has just brought a modern day ‘Daily Chicago’ to all of us. Nothing more.

I was concerned when many Rep. ‘elite’ wrote her off so soon after her announcement that she was resigning. But then I started to see the rational.

The Republican Party should be aware of a couple of things. It is quite likely that Energy, Smaller Government, and Less Taxes and Spending will be the pivotal issues for the next few years. I think some in Washington should be very careful when criticizing Gov.Palin, weather Republican or Democrat. The Dkos , Huffpukes owners will have worn out their welcome and their liberal theories. Most Americans, Democratic and Republican will be looking for someone that will just make things better for our children, and I think that most will vote for ‘One of Us’. There is not another potiential candidate that fits that bill, but Gov. Sarah Palin.

A word to Democrat and Republican elected officals. If you put yourself in a position to be labeled as a ‘Good ole Boy’ of today’s government, after a couple more years of the
“Train Wreck” called Obama, you do so at your own risk. Sarah has a record that the majority of Americans LIKE…………
