NY Times writer Paul Krugman also thinks anyone protesting high taxes is crazy.

 godcar

First it was MSNBC and now the NY Times jumps on the “You’re insane if you protest high taxes” bandwagon. Pau Krugman writes:

This is a column about Republicans — and I’m not sure I should even be writing it.

Today’s G.O.P. is, after all, very much a minority party. It retains some limited ability to obstruct the Democrats, but has no ability to make or even significantly shape policy.

Beyond that, Republicans have become embarrassing to watch. And it doesn’t feel right to make fun of crazy people. Better, perhaps, to focus on the real policy debates, which are all among Democrats.

But here’s the thing: the G.O.P. looked as crazy 10 or 15 years ago as it does now. That didn’t stop Republicans from taking control of both Congress and the White House. And they could return to power if the Democrats stumble. So it behooves us to look closely at the state of what is, after all, one of our nation’s two great political parties.

One way to get a good sense of the current state of the G.O.P., and also to see how little has really changed, is to look at the “tea parties” that have been held in a number of places already, and will be held across the country on Wednesday. These parties — antitaxation demonstrations that are supposed to evoke the memory of the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution — have been the subject of considerable mockery, and rightly so.

OK Paul – so anyone that protests high taxes and massive budget deficits is crazy and deserves to be mocked. And why should they be mocked? Because it’s really about the evil schemes of right-wing billionaires, Fox News, and people opposed to the theory of evolution. Krugman states:

Going back to those tea parties, Mr. DeLay, a fierce opponent of the theory of evolution — he famously suggested that the teaching of evolution led to the Columbine school massacre — also foreshadowed the denunciations of evolution that have emerged at some of the parties.

Last but not least: it turns out that the tea parties don’t represent a spontaneous outpouring of public sentiment. They’re AstroTurf (fake grass roots) events, manufactured by the usual suspects. In particular, a key role is being played by FreedomWorks, an organization run by Richard Armey, the former House majority leader, and supported by the usual group of right-wing billionaires. And the parties are, of course, being promoted heavily by Fox News.

So I guess this is bad but protests put on by groups like ACORN, CAN, MoveOn,Code Pink,Democracy Corps,Americans United for Change, Americans Coming Together, Media Matters,Center for American Progress etc that are supported by left-wing billionaires and promoted by ABC,NBC,CBS,CNN,PBS and MSNBC are OK. Nice logic Paul. Nice.

and even I can refute a great deal of Krugman’s laughable “points”. I feel for you, though: I cannot stand his condescending writing style, and it must come off as even more pompous for someone who has a degree in Econ already.

So Mike you should do an extensive diary....

in the am.

One of the most important points I want to make about PK is the change in his writing over the years and esp after Obama won. He actually has been more critical of Obama but also actually made a great case for the necessity of a HUGE stimulus, one that ONLY the private sector could achieve, yet still insists that we can do it by fighting WWII again….

And I didn't think they cared.

If it’s so irrelevant and trivial, as the left had constantly said earlier, why write about it? It wasn’t that long ago the entire left was talking about how silly and irrelevant these were. They’ve become awfully peeved about it lately.

So taxes aren’t a “real” policy debate? I guess that doesn’t match up to Corrine Brown (D) and her lovely cheer for the the Florida Gators. Better yet, let’s debate our thoughts on scientific origins!

He resorts to personal attacks because he can’t think of anything substantive to back up his claims. For that matter, he can’t form a coherent claim. One would think the Times would at least make something up. This doesn’t even meet basic fifth grade writing standards.
