Ibtihaj Muhammad became a media star during the summer Olympics when she became the first female Muslim-American to medal in the Olympics for the United States. The New Jersey native won a , a New Jersey native who made headlines last year when she became the first female Muslim-American to win an Olympic medal for the United States.
Winning international attention for wearing a hijab during competition, Muhammad’s bronze came as a member of the winning U.S. team in the Women’s Team Sabre competition.
Muhammad was recently back in the headlines when the drooling mainstream media highlighted her story of being detained at an airport because of Trump’s recent “travel ban”. There’s only one problem…it was Obama’s “ban” that caught her in the red tape, not Trump.
In an interview on February 7 with Popsugar, the athlete spoke about her concerns with Trump’s national security promises, and described an incident a few weeks prior where she had been held at customs for two hours.
Well, I personally was held at Customs for two hours just a few weeks ago. I don’t know why. I can’t tell you why it happened to me, but I know that I’m Muslim. I have an Arabic name. And even though I represent Team USA and I have that Olympic hardware, it doesn’t change how you look and how people perceive you.
Unfortunately, I know that people talk about this having a lot to do with these seven countries in particular, but I think the net is cast a little bit wider than we know. And I’m included in that as a Muslim woman who wears a hijab.
Media outlets jumped at the chance to highlight her story as proof of Trump’s oppression, completely ignoring the timeline. Muhammad said on the 7th that the incident happened weeks prior. She later clarified in a tweet that it actually happened in December.
Thanks to all who reached out regarding the December incident at customs. I will continue be a voice for all impacted by profiling & bigotry

Trump wasn’t even inaugurated until January 20, 2017. Furthermore, Muhammad offers no proof beyond her personal testimony that her detention was the result of her hijab. She’s a fencer. Was she transporting her equipment? Was she reentering from another country? Was it the tools of her trade rather than her physical appearance that prompted the delay? Even if it is Obama’s policy that caused her the terribly tragic inconvenience of waiting at an airport an extra two hours, there’s no proof of it.
She either doesn’t say or doesn’t know. Without any further verification, the hysterical press used her story to push the narrative that Trump’s very narrow (and now halted) travel measures were affecting scores of innocent Americans.
Of course, the details of the story are irrelevant. A narrative must be pushed, journalism be damned.
