The obsession with sexism in the human world is downright nauseating. It supposedly lurks behind every corner, waiting to offend, belittle, and dominate. Don’t compliment women, because that’s sexist. Don’t assume they want to be mothers, because that’s sexist. And whatever you do, don’t look at them too long, male population.
Now, sexism has gone beyond the human world into the canine world. Halloween is already scary, but it is even more so because you may be dressing your dog in a sexist costume.
Yes, really.
The Washington Post published an article today questioning that very thing.
Young girls may be discarding their princess wands for superhero capes this Halloween, but not so in the canine world.
The glass ceiling appears to be firmly in place at PetSmart, where career costumes labeled “male” include firefighter and police officer, while female dogs can choose between a pink cowgirl costume and pink loofah.
“It seems silly on the surface, but this is part of a larger message we’re sending, that there are certain jobs for men, and certain jobs for women,” said Scott Lawrie, 36, who co-hosts a podcast, ‘She will not be ignored,’ about gender issues. “The career options for women — and dogs — need to go beyond pink loofahs and pink cowgirls.”
At Party City, Supergirl and Wonder Woman doggie costumes were priced 30 percent higher than Superman costumes ($16.99 versus $12.99). Batgirl costumes, meanwhile, were selling for $19.99, a 33 percent premium on Batman’s $14.99 price tag.
“Even if it’s just on principle, this is important,” he said. “I’m waiting until they fix it.”
No, it’s actually not important. Because they are dogs. It’s not costume manufacturers’ fault that owners, who may get upset by the labeling, are social justice warriors just emerging from their safe spaces, and are now standing in the blinding light of a super sexist society. Or something.
However, it really goes beyond all that. The Left supposes that very general male and female categories for career choices – even those for dog costumes – are further proof of systematic sexism. In fact, they’re really not. More men than women are in law enforcement or firefighting careers because of the very physical demands of the job. Girls naturally gravitate toward the color pink. Admitting these things is the first step to recovery.
More importantly, parents who care will reinforce to their children, whether they be male or female, that they aren’t defined by societal whims. Their inherent worth is already established, and career paths, whatever they turn out to be, have no bearing on that.
So, continue with that plan to dress your dog in Halloween garb which best reinforces the frightening patriarchy.
Cats are better, anyway.
