Obama’s glass houses

Does he want to start throwing stones?

Since how many houses John McCain has seems to be the issue du jour, David Freddoso takes some time to discuss Obama’s house and his pal Tony Rezko.

The house:

Barack Obama has admitted it was “boneheaded” to get involved in a land deal with Tony Rezko, his friend and fund-raiser. But the media’s focus on that deal has distracted from the bigger question: Why would Obama become involved in any deal with a man like Rezko, who made his living sponging off taxpayers and corrupting public officials? Because, by the time of the deal, the two already had a long relationship of mutual benefit.

The deal’s details are well-known: On June 15, 2005, Obama bought a gorgeous house in Hyde Park for $1.65 million – $300,000 below the list price. Rezko bought the empty but attractive lot next door from the same seller at the same time; Obama would later buy part of Rezko’s lot, overpaying him.

The transaction was shady, but not obviously corrupt. The overall Obama-Rezko relationship looks worse.

The relationship:

In October 1998, Obama wrote city and state officials, urging them to give Rezko $14 million to build an apartment complex outside of Obama’s state Senate district. The Chicago Sun-Times noted last year that Obama’s request included $855,000 in “development fees” for Rezko and for another developer, Allison Davis, who happened to be Obama’s old law-firm boss. Obama’s spokesman said it was just a coincidence that the state senator wrote letters to obtain millions of dollars for his two longtime friends.

[. . .]

* In 2001, Obama cosponsored a bill allowing developers to sell state tax credits to others and pocket half of the proceeds.

* In 2002 and 2004, he was chief cosponsor of a bill to authorize a rent-subsidy fund giving “grants . . . directly to developers” of low-income housing. Seventy percent of the money was earmarked for the Chicago area.

* Obama cosponsored the Illinois Housing Initiative Act of 2003, which required the governor to develop a plan for more low-income housing and “provide[d] for funding for housing construction and rehabilitation and supportive services.”

* In 2003, Obama voted for the Affordable Housing Planning and Appeal Act, which required Illinois municipalities to make 10 percent of their housing units “affordable” (by definition, this included subsidized housing). This forced 46 communities just outside of Chicago to create more than 7,000 new “affordable” units – a huge boost in demand for area developers. The bill also provided loopholes for developers to circumvent local ordinances and regulations.

After voting for this measure (it passed narrowly), Obama then cosponsored a new bill that moved up its implementation by more than a year.

These and the other Obama-backed bills helped make millionaires of Rezko and other slum developers at taxpayers’ expense. The developers – including his former law boss and an adviser to his current campaign – reciprocated, together giving and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Obama’s campaigns.

And of course this Boston Globe article is a must read on Obama’s dismal record on the issue of low income housing.

Maybe Obama shouldn’t be so quick to bring up housing as an issue . . .

Also, if being rich and having a lot of houses means you are out of touch with Americans, I wonder how Obama feels about his friend, and 2004 Democratic nominee, John Kerry:

From a sailing mecca to a ski resort, presumptive Democrat nominee John Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, enjoy the trappings of their wealth in at least five homes and vacation getaways across the country valued at nearly $33 million.

I am surprised that Obama really wants to make this an issue.

Kerry was aggressively supported by Barack, along with his five houses and 50 million dollar estate..

but, since we know Obama has to flip flop and lie about EVERY position, not a surprise that suddenly owning rental real estate is a huge moral failing now.

There is NOT ONE issue that Obama has not done a 180 flip on- except for the right to murder babies after failed abortions. On that he stands on his former position.

The libs are getting flop sweat- we can see it from here!

John McCain is embarrassing

I know how many houses I own. I’m sure all of you reading this post know how many houses you own.

What kind of person doesn’t know how many houses they own? Are any of you so rich you have to ask your staff to get back to you regarding how many houses you own?

It is a very basic question that John McCain couldn’t answer. Is his memory that bad? Is he that out of touch? Is he lying?

The truth is he’s rich, shallow and out of touch.

You love to slam Obama, a true self made man, who is the classic example of an American success story, yet you are so willing to overlook all of McCain’s lies and moral failings: Cheating on his first wife, the Keating 5, the lobbyists running his campaign, voting against the VA bill, and the fact he’s flopped then flipped on virtually every single issue.

But none of that matters, does it?

Oh, and McCain has no problem with bringing back the draft. That was just yesterday.

Not a problem. I’m sure he’ll deny ever saying it and that would be okay with all of you.

Barack Obama had more than twice as many people show up and vote for him in the primaries than John McCain.

It seems reasonable to me that those very same people will still vote for Barack Obama in the general election, along with many of Hillary’s supporters and a good deal of Independents and even some honest Republicans.

And I don’t see any Democrats or even many Independents switching over to vote for McCain, and I’m reasonably certain many of you radical conservatives are either going to vote for Bob Barrr, Ron Paul, or just stay home.

Translation: he's worried about the poll numbers.

Sounds like McCain is the man for you. Just a normal, everyday guy who’s married into wealth and doesn’t have to worry about money at all.

High gas prices and foreclosures aren’t a problem for him.

Let me give you an example...

larueladue (Diary) Thursday, August 21st at 6:43PM EST (link)

My wife and I are dog breeders, and she is the lead on this. I live with and take care of the dogs, but I never know exactly how many dogs we have. It will vary between 15 -25, usually…

I have people at work, etc., always asking how many dogs we have, but I never really know… I might get within 2 or 3, but I almost never know exactly how many are at the house. That is because it is her realm to deal with, not mine. I help, but I am not the “head breeder”. I have my own job to take care of.

As long as there are enough dog bowls to go around when feeding time comes around, that is all I know about how many we have in the kennels and in the house.

Eh, he's a ghost now

Bill S (Diary) Thursday, August 21st at 6:46PM EST (link)

But since you brought up dogs, chances are he’ll be back. Dogs like him do tend to return to their own vomit. bigR is liable to be back as a retread.

…is that for most people the phrase “I married a woman who was heir to a beer distributorship!” is semantically equivalent to “I’m living the American Dream, baby!”

Or, to put it in simpler terms: most of us don’t hate rich people for being rich people. Obama’s argument would (and will) work on Obama, mostly because he’s trying to play populist. But shoot, we expect the GOP candidate to be richer than God. He’s the GOP candidate, isn’t he?
