This presidency thing is cool. I set the strategy because I won. Then I go out for dinner, go to the ballet, and set off for Illinois for a photo op at the Lincoln's birthday bash and it's all on the book. Lots less demanding than when I was working over the banks for Acorn pushing the Community Redevelopment Act. Nancy and Harry can handle it here and John has the rest of the world covered. All I need is someone to keep an eye on Hilary to make sure she doesn't actually do something and I'll have it made.

...Obama's bearings are coming loose very early and it's not a good tone to set for his first two weeks in office. If he's not careful, this could very well set the tone for his first 100 days.

He needs to dump Gibbs first of all, a bad press secretary is one of the worst things that can happen to a President (look at Scott McClellan) and a good one is a God-send (look at Tony Snow).

Then he needs to announce to his staff that any sort of bipartisan Washington dream utopia is out of the window, as the Republicans have too much difference between them and the Dems to do this. Obama is obviously interested in setting a liberal tone and engaging in a liberal agenda, let them do it and own it. Let me tell you, it would be the best thing to happen to the Republican Party in a long time.

Finally, Obama needs to pull the reigns of power from Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. He needs to put them in their place and let them know he is the President, not them. He sets the agenda for the country, not them and if they wanted to be President, they should have ran last year.

If Obama can do these things, he may be able to steer his presidency back on track and at least have a meaningful term. If not, he's not looking too good.

Obama has perhaps run into his first major "say one thing, do something else" predicament. While he rallies his left-wing supporters with campaign speeches, he by definition angers or scares, and thus freezes in place nearly every financial decision maker in the country.

Home Owners [There are tens of millions] I am hesitant to depend on the economy supporting a renter for my single family dwelling since I can't sell it. So I don't move on with a new house purchase. I am close to choosing to default on my mortgage -- and when all appears hopeless, I will (immediately after signing a long-term rental agreement).

Small businesses [There are millions] If I am a contractor or small business owner, I am certainly not going to be hiring anyone or buying new equipment. And I won't start doing anything until I am sure that Obama is not going to make matters in my town worse.

Farmers [There are tens of thousands] I fear that the Obama administration might engage in protectionism and other activities to try and look good to the left, e.g. unions etc. I am surely not going to make any large purchases since I can't get or don't want credit.

Large Companies [There are thousands] If I ran a large corporation, I would be all about getting positioned for the coming high inflation, higher taxes, and an administration hostile to businesses.

Now for the financial non-decision makers:

No income, unemployable [There are tens of millions] I am thrilled with Obama and still think everything will soon be wonderful. I don't make anything and certainly don't hire anybody.

Teacher and other unions [There are millions] I don't actually hire anyone but more pay and benefits for me are great. Promoting my union is my highest priority.

Government [There are tens of thousands] If I get some federal money, I will have to hire some people to spend it. Welfare and other services are booming. Government life is good!

Medical services [There are thousands] I will need to hire more doctors and nurses to support the coming national health plan. However, there are not enough doctors and nurses to hire, so I will have to start rationing medical care -- big surprise.

Congress [There is just one] I am primarily concerned with getting reelected. The fact that I have to visit my home district in an armored vehicle with a security detail is disconcerting. Maybe Obama mania is not such a hot idea after all.

both the TRS-80 and the VIC-20 as "home computers," and they came before the Timex-Sinclair. The VIC-20 was the predecessor to the C-64 and was quite popular in its own right.

Wait until 3 years and the rest of Blue states will become exactly like Chicago.

.... unless we do something.*

*RS Guys and Gals (including you, bro) have been on a "combatant/guerilla mood" since Day 1, which is quite remarkable.

that national politics isn't as corruption friendly as Chicago politics. Chicago voters may not care what their politicians do, or how they act, but, it appears, most other Americans still do care.

Who'd a thunk it?

Besides the fact that Obama is obviously in over his head, let us add arrogance to it. He's so arrogant he thinks he is right.

why his immense intelligence didn't indicate to him that he should pull Daschle's nomination when the news about his non-payment of $200,000 in taxes came out. Why did he stick with an obvious tax cheat?

Why did he have to wait for Daschle to recognize an untenable situation and remove himself?

There are two answers. First, that would have meant to admit a mistake without being forced to.

Second, Obama doesn't have the experience to inform him that it was a true political problem. He thought it would be swept under the rug as things like this were during the campaign, as the Geithner tax problems and Eric Holder's history were.

Maybe there is a third reason, too. They clearly had no fallback position. Obama doesn't know enough qualified people to have a reservoir of backup talent to pick from.

Had one of those little hand-held things that you could program in Basic, too. First real computer was a Northstar Advantage 64K machine running in CPM. It had a 5 meg hard drive and a Selectric style keyboard. Ran Wordstar, SuperCalc, and Dbase II. It was da bomb in '81 or '82. Only cost about 6 grand attogether back then but they had the $5K first year expense deal back then for computers - which really means the price should have been a couple of thousand, but Northstar knew you could expense of $5K.
