Sarah Palin’s debut op-ed piece in the Washington Post, “The ‘Cap And Tax’ Dead End” is a dizzying display of conflation, mixing carbon emissions policies with energy independence policies to such an extent that she seems to have just cut and paste a bunch of recycled campaign talking points about how much energy resources Alaska has. Aside from that distraction, she did actually manage some harsh words of criticism in her piece about the cap-and-trade plan:
…I believe it is an enormous threat to our economy. It would undermine our recovery over the short term and would inflict permanent damage.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/13/AR2009071302852.html
So at least one thing is clear, Palin does not support a cap-and-trade energy plan. Or does she? She supported and endorsed a cap-and trade plan just about a year ago while running for Vice President.
John McCain and Sarah Palin will establish a market-based system to curb greenhouse gas emissions, mobilize innovative technologies, and strengthen the economy.
They have proposed a cap-and-trade system that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions while encouraging the development of low-cost compliance options.
http://www.seethroughthepodium.org/issues/climate/environment_mccain.pdf
You might just chalk that up to the campaign taking some liberties but I would not expect a person with any true convictions to allow such a serious ethical lapse. Even so she had the opportunity to clear up any errors to a National audience during the Vice Presidential debates. Here is the transcript of the exchange between the candidates and the moderator on the subject of cap-and-trade.
IFILL: Let me clear something up, Sen. McCain has said he supports caps on carbon emissions. Sen. Obama has said he supports clean coal technology, which I don’t believe you’ve always supported.
BIDEN: I have always supported it. That’s a fact.
IFILL: Well, clear it up for us, both of you, and start with Gov. Palin.
PALIN: Yes, Sen. McCain does support this. The chant is “drill, baby, drill.” And that’s what we hear all across this country in our rallies because people are so hungry for those domestic sources of energy to be tapped into.
They know that even in my own energy-producing state we have billions of barrels of oil and hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of clean, green natural gas. And we’re building a nearly $40 billion natural gas pipeline which is North America’s largest and most you expensive infrastructure project ever to flow those sources of energy into hungry markets.
Barack Obama and Sen. Biden, you’ve said no to everything in trying to find a domestic solution to the energy crisis that we’re in. You even called drilling — safe, environmentally-friendly drilling offshore as raping the outer continental shelf.
There — with new technology, with tiny footprints even on land, it is safe to drill and we need to do more of that. But also in that “all of the above” approach that Sen. McCain supports, the alternative fuels will be tapped into: the nuclear, the clean coal.
I was surprised to hear you mention that because you had said that there isn’t anything — such a thing as clean coal. And I think you said it in a rope line, too, at one of your rallies.
IFILL: We do need to keep within our two minutes. But I just wanted to ask you, do you support capping carbon emissions?
PALIN: I do. I do.
She states her support quite clearly. So what happened in the time between then and now that she decided to completely reverse her position? And why then, in her op-ed did she not mention that astounding revelation once?
Palin acknowledges climate change and that Alaska’s climate is warming but has stated her uncertainty about whether or not man contributes to the problem, this of course is a perfectly acceptable and reasonable perspective but then why did she support capping carbon emissions? And why then did she set up a Climate Change Sub-Cabinet in Alaska where she wrote in the cabinet’s premiere report that low-carbon energy will be part of her climate change strategy.
Alaska has the opportunity, through commercialization of its vast North Slope Natural Gas reserves, to assist the rest of the country in securing a steady, affordable, low-carbon energy source. This will be an element of our climate change strategy.
If one does not believe man is the cause then what benefit could there possibly be to climate change from low-carbon energy? The sub-cabinet which she created has made numerous recommendations, many of which suggest reducing greenhouse gases, even a cap-and-trade method.
O&G 6: Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) from high CO2 fuel gas burned at Prudhoe Bay, use of the CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR)

http://www.climatechange.alaska.gov/aag/docs/AAG7_ONE-PAGERS_revised_15Jun09.pdf
So back to Palin’s op-ed piece slamming cap-and-trade, this is of course her opinion but why has it changed so drastically within the last year? She was either lying to the Nation so that she could jump into the VP candidate slot, deciding to compromise her ideals for her political ambitions or she actually does believe in cap-and-trade and manmade climate change but wants to feed her supporters what they want to hear? Given the quality of her recent op-ed I don’t think we’ll be getting a clear answer anytime soon.

Princeliberty Thursday, July 16th at 9:13AM EST (link)In Alaska, Palin was promoting low carb energy sources like natural gas.
Which also goes her pipeline plan. That’s far diffrent’s than Obama Cap and trade plan where huge taxes on put on Oil and gas production and everything else for that matter and all kinds are done to take control of people’s lives.
While at same time doing nothing to cap world carb emissions since the
Oil and coal production will shift to foreign nations that do not follow on environmental standards.
Obama’s going to crush our economy, make us less free – in a BIG way, while actually increasing worldwide pollution.
Obama’s cap and trade is a truely remarkably bad plan – apparently he was trying to come up with the worse plan in human history. Its definitely a nominee!

SORRY BRO, LIKE PALIN, I AM ALSO ONE OF THOSE CONSERVATIVES WHO BELIEVE IN CAP-N-TRADE THROUGH NUCLEAR ENERGY AND NATURAL GAS (much lower CO2 emissions.)
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Wednesday, July 15th at 7:03PM EST (link)IF AND ONLY IF “THE DESIGN” OF THE PROGRAM WILL:
1. Ensure that the cost and efficacy of the modern technologies being supported will be competitive or at least “at par” with the present crop of technologies.
Pls Note: Carbon emission is not only confined with replacing current crop of energy technologies. Re-forestation, energy efficiency and demand side management also help.
2. When the Cap is dictated by the market.
>>> Let the market, not the Congress, dictate the cap.
3. When the end-users still retain their freedom to choose whatever they think is economically or even philosophically/morally suitable to their preference.
>>> I am libertarian in this sense.
Why I also do not oppose the General concept of CAP-N-TRADE?
I believe in the power of Science especially on the matter of INNOVATION AND ADVANCEMENT IN LIFESTYLE.
IMAGINE if we can control climate or even weather in the future. We can have multiple cropping in our farming system. Plus we would be able to control hurricane, twister, tsunamis, etc.
>> > I know that’s the ideal. Call us DREAMERS. But I don’t limit the capacity and indigenuity of the American scientists and engineers. We are people of innovation. Let the Scientists also have their freedom to do their job in exploring new and far more advanced technologies (as long as no one will be harmed in the process.)
Remember, who would think that airplane or even cellphone would be possible 200 years ago?
PALIN’S CAP-N-TRADE CAN BE ATTAINED BY THE BEST ENERGY TECHNOLOGY THAT WE HAVE AT THE MOMENT>>> NUCLEAR ENERGY.
Technologies such as solar and wind are not effective enough in making a dent in capping carbon in the energy sector.
ACKNOWLEDGE THIS: PALIN IS A STRONG SUPPORTER OF OIL, GAS AND NUCLEAR ENERGY TOO, despite her non-opposition to technologies like solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and hydro.
Which is logical to me.
WHY PALIN AND I HATE OBAMA’S CAP-N-TRADE?
Simple. It is mainly focused on Renewable Energy. It will only cater those special interest groups from the RE sector.
SHE KNOWS THAT NUCLEAR ENERGY CAN MAKE A DENT IN CAPPING CARBON EMISSION.
Palin knows that oil and gas should still be supported since the society has not yet found a REAL economically viable and better alternative.
As for the theory of Climate Change, who knows whether antropological activities are really the major cause of the Climate Change? I won’t confirm or deny it. Why? Scientists are not unanimous yet on the subject. I won’t take side at the moment. More studies are still necessary. And nerdy scientists must take a unanimous conclusion on this (e.g., Newtonian law of motion in non-relativistic conditions). So I will keep my mind open on the issue. And I hate mixing politics in Science – be it conservative or democratic.
IN SHORT…. THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS.
CBO HAS ALREADY EXPOSED THE PERILOUS DETAILS OF OBAMA’S PROGRAM where nuclear energy and natural gas are implicitly omitted.
LIKE PALIN, WE MUST OPPOSE THE CAP-N-TRADE OF OBAMA BECAUSE OF ITS DETAILS (AND HENCE, IT’S POTENTIALLY DEADLY IMPACT TO THE AMERICAN ECONOMY ESPECIALLY NOW THAT WE ARE IN AN ECONOMIC CRISIS.)
NOTE: Of course, the other comments above are political way of saying that you’re also being too critical of Palin … which has led to the loss of your own critical thinking in the process.

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Thursday, July 16th at 7:01AM EST (link)The problem with your diary is its main CONTEXT.
She was bound to support McCain’s version of Cap-N-Trade and not Obama’s.
Palin is arguing against the Cost and the Timing of Obama’s Cap-N-Trade Bill.
As for that sub-cabinet whatevah, Don’t be picky. Check out other State Governments with Republican as Governor. You will be amazed on what you will find. Climate studies should always be part of a Government’s overall security assessment. If were you, you should have an open mind on it. IMHO, being conservatives, we should always be very observants of the things that are happening around us. We must be seekers of Natural Laws. So we should not oppose CLIMATOLOGY, which is a branch of Science. Climatology deals with the factors that influence changes in climate (or the lack of it) and its potential impacts to the environment.
To climate scientists (both pro and con to Loony Gore’s theory of Climate Change at the moment), changes in atmospheric levels of CO2, N2, and other elements are always a SUSPECT.
IN ARCHIPELAGIC country or state like Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, Australia, Philippines, Indonesia, etc., CLIMATE INVESTIGATION AND WEATHER SCIENCE ARE ALWAYS PART OF THEIR SURVIVAL KIT.
So stop it. Cap-N-Trade hinged on conservative principles (meaning the overall design will be consistent with supply side economics*) shall be a welcome adjustments especially if that will lead to MORE ENERGY RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT.
Why I’m saying this? Because I saw a presentation on a Conservative version of Cap-N-Trade that aims to support greater natural gas development and advancements in nuclear technology in the country. The speaker was from Raynd Center or Heritage Foundation (I couldn’t remember). His version of Cap-N-Trade would lower the electricity price by 10-15% through greater availability of Combined-Cycle Natural Gas and Nuclear Power.
Conclusion;
I don’t care if a politician is pro Cap-N-Trade so long as his or her FIRST priority is “DRILL OIL, GAS, URANIUM! DRILL HERE, NOW!”.
Whether you like Cap-N-Trade or not is unimportant. The real issue is whether or not you support Natural Gas, Nuclear, Oil, Coal and other forms of cost-effective technologies.
Obama’s Cap-N-Trade Bill is only favoring Renewables and are totally against NatGas, Nuclear, Coal, Oil, etc. that will lead to the ballooning of our electric bills.
Have you stopped beating your wife?...nt.

Believe me that would have been awesome if she sat there and said “I don’t believe in that global warming crap and neither should you”
If you read between the lines of that transcript that you gave us I think it’s pretty clear she was uncorfortable with idea of supporting cap & trade but the last thing you want to do is bite the political hand that feeds you.
However with how the campaign staffers treated her after that debate all the way until now I’m pretty sure if she could do it all over again she’d give them a real clear reason to suspect she’s gone “rogue”.
I expect her to state her positions
keeper (Diary) Wednesday, July 15th at 11:14PM EST (link)on pressing issues accurately. Why is that so much to ask?
If she is going to follow McCain on something she doesn’t believe in or thinks is a ‘Dead End’ for the Nation then she should show some leadership qualities and say so, not tag along cause she really wants to be VP. So now she wants to write op-eds on the subject but doesn’t want to admit her past support on the subject and hope everyone ignores it, thats not leadership.
And it would have been awesome if she said “I don’t believe in that global warming crap and neither should you” but she does believe in it. She said so in her statement forming the Climate Change Sub-Cabinet.
In what way is this important?
discerningconservative (Diary) Wednesday, July 15th at 11:30PM EST (link)Is Sarah Palin going to be voting on cap and trade in the Senate? Why is her position of any importance at this time? When she is running for elected office, you can feel free to bring this up, but as things stand right now this is not important. What is important is that she wrote a pretty good op-ed that might help convince some that this piece of legislation is detrimental to the American economy. How is that a bad thing? Do you go through every op-ed in the WaPo and try to dismantle it? Your constant anti-Palin posting is getting old, very old.
well put
Chris Chatham (Diary) Thursday, July 16th at 12:56AM EST (link)If the goal is to stop cap and trade then we should take all the help we can get. It was a common sense argument. We have an abundant amount of natural gas, oil, and coal that we can extract that can provide a stop gap until a real breakthrough in green energy emerges.
In a middle of a recession Palin lays the case for natural resource development as a key issue for recovery as suppose to cap and trade and all you care about is ripping Sarah Palin???
If this woman gives you that much grief in your life then do what the rest of the Palin-haters do whenever they see her hold a fish, talk to Greta, wear her husband’s jacket. file an ethics complaint. It’s not like it won’t cost you anything
Yeah, abdicating to Obama would have been preferable

keeper, do you have a list of what politicians pass your purity test?
civil truth (Diary) Thursday, July 16th at 12:22AM EST (link)And some follow-up questions:
1) If you had drawn up a purity list last year, how many would still be on that list?
2) Can this group of politicians by themselves save our nation from the slow-motion Communist coup that is underway in Washington by our Democratic leaders in Congress and the current occupant of the White House?
Or perhaps you should direct your energies trying to defeat the betrayers of our nation rather than focusing on distilling the dwindling ranks of the defenders of our nation.
The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Thanks for the diary
GremlinJones (Diary) Thursday, July 16th at 3:09PM EST (link)Interesting article, and well written, thanks. I think the truth lies somewhere in-between, personally.
I think she was probably inadequately prepared for the debates and forgot to emphasize that it was McCain’s position and not her own. Or maybe she didn’t appreciate the nuances of the issue at the time and has since come to a better understanding.
I think your last sentence nails it.
