Obama’s Presidential campaign was pretty much based on getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan, playing to the anti-war movement, to be fair he did make statements about Afghanistan deteriorating and being ignored, but he has doubled the number of troops there now and the anti-war groups seem to be eerily silent.
Obama has voiced strong commitment to the ongoing Afghan conflict but has been cautious about making any additional military resources available beyond the 17,000 combat troops and 4,000 military trainers he agreed to in February. That will bring the total U.S. force to 68,000 by fall.
In 2008 there were around 34,000 troops, by fall there will be 68,000, that’s almost half as many we have in Iraq! I’d say that is a fair amount of escalation, a surge if you will so maybe the situation was getting pretty dire, maybe Obama is actually listening to his Generals in the field. I don’t know what surprises me more, the silence of the anti-war groups(actually not surprising at all) or that Obama might actually be, dare I say, hawkish.

wow, way to pay attention....

http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/issues/iraq.html
“In Afghanistan, he has promised to ramp up the American military effort, particularly on the Pakistani border, and has said that if America received intelligence about suspected Qaeda operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan, he is prepared, as commander in chief, to act on it.”
Now I know its hard to listen to Obama, but you should probably at least understand his stated positions on things like war…. but I guess your right he is just “listening to the advice of his generals” obviously its not something he has been saying he was going to do from day one.
Bottom line: Obama still thinks its all about Bin Laden
civil truth (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 7:39PM EST (link)Like many on the left, Obama thinks that the beginning and end of Islamist terrorism is Al Qaeda, which he thinks is entirely contained in Afghanistan (and neighboring regions of Pakistan), and that if he can somehow defeat them there (whatever that means) and capture Bin Laden, the conflict will be over and we can all go back to a pre-911 world.
Perhaps its also his Buch obsession, and that he much succeed at all costs to do what Bush didn’t do (capturing Bin Laden) because then he’ll be a better president.

I wonder CV is the Obama meme is really a substitute for their real opinion that

No, Mike, for the American left, Al Qaeda is the one (and perhaps only) example of an implacable enemy
civil truth (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 8:27PM EST (link)At least that part of Al Qaeda that’s still in Afghanistan – and their Taliban allies. They must be exterminated – while every other group in the world is fertile ground for Obama’s charm.
Also it’s part of the Iraq war was a mistake meme of the left.
That is, the left argument runs, 1) we needed to put more troops into Afghanistan so that we could have caught Bin Laden at Tora Bora; 2) Bush shifted to Iraq for malign reasons (blood for oil, neocon strategy, Oedipal conflict [finishing the job that GHWB didn't finish]) before finishing the job in Afghanistan; 3) as I indicated above, the obsession with personality that the left has, that if we can catch Bin Laden that the whole terrorism movement will fall apart, as though he’s the Fagan that orchestrates the network indispensibly.
Also, as I noted, it’s also an extension of BDS and that if Obama can do the task that Bush failed at, this will prove how bad a leader that Bush was, and Obama can crow about how he captured the BIG GUY and struck a fatal blow against those misguided people who have perverted the Religion of Peace, so that we can all go home again with a Mission Accomplished.
It’s like the old joke about the man searching for his lost keys who rather than search in the darkness in the region where he dropped them, he headed over to look for them under the street lamp because that’s where there’s light so that he can see more easily.

I think most of the left doesn't think that and that the only reason

The Bush obsession is a factor, but I think its more complicated
Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 10:57PM EST (link)Remember the why do they hate us libs not too long after 911? Obama hummed that chorus at the time.
It was only after Iraq got tougher that the middle to left dems started to obsess over bin Laden since that was one tangible thing they could hold over Bush’s head to claim was not accomplished due to “losing our focus in Iraq.”
Obama and the left reveal their lack of seriousness over terrorism with their opposition to most all homeland security measures at various times.
I just don’t think they are that specifically stupid to really think that the only threats are in Afghanistan and bin Laden’s cave.
They are much stupider than that.

I won't disagree with your analysis
civil truth (Diary) Saturday, July 11th at 11:10PM EST (link)Obama and the left reveal their lack of seriousness over terrorism with their opposition to most all homeland security measures at various times.
The key point that I think you’re discounting is how the left personalizes issues rather than deal with facts and thought processes. So just as they constantly attack people rather than ideas – Bush, Palin, Joe the Plumber, Bork – and direct their energies to destroying the person as a surrogate for discrediting their ideas i.e. conservatism – so rather than deal with Islam and the fundamentalist interpretations, they prefer to focus on individuals – in this case Bin Laden – and believe that what’s key is capturing him rather than taking seriously how his ideas are metastasizing wildly – that is when they don’t blame the U.S. (or conservatives) for the growth and spread of these ideas.

Not Focusing on Capturting
rememberthemaine Sunday, July 12th at 11:02PM EST (link)Bin-Laden would be like letting Hitler spend out his years wandering
The Black Forest eating nuts, berries and the occasional squirrel or rabbit.
OBL killed 2500 Americans and ruined countless lives. I want him caught or killed. It’s not a political issue to me its a personal one.
I wish it was that way with all true Americans I don’t care if it was Bush,Will be BHO or whoever may be president in 2012.
Just Curious
rememberthemaine Sunday, July 12th at 10:26AM EST (link)a) What do you suggest we do in Afghanistan?
b) No matter what the motive, do you think it is critical to either kill
or capture Bin-Laden at all costs?
c) Do you really believe BHO (not the liberal left) believes that “the war is over” upon capturing Bin-Laden?
d)I have plenty of bones to pick with our president. This is not one
one of them. He said over and over again during his campaign what he would like to do (about Afghanistan), but ultimately he would rely on the advice of his military. Isn’t it possible that in this
instance that he is following through with a promise?
Bin Laden has spread his ideas beyond Afghanistan..
nessa (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 11:48AM EST (link)Killing him, though well deserved, will have no lessening effect on radical islamic terrorism. If he were killed we would probably see a spike in terror attacks but his vision of a Caliphate where his brand of militant, radical islam rules supreme, stretching across the Pacific, Asia, Africa, Europe and eventually America, is shared by too many for the death of any one person to stop it.
The followers of AQs ideals are in it only for themselves, they seek to increase their own personal power. Much like our own leftists, if all America’s wealth is going to be re-distributed, it is better to be one of the distributors. For radical islamists if the world is to be ruled from the barrel of a gun it is better to be one of those holding the gun.
They both use the same people as fodder to advance their agandas. The leftists have created the entitlement class to unfailingly provide them with a base of voters that can be counted on to provide the votes necessary to remain in office and pass the legislation necessary to keep the entitlement class entitled.
Radical Islamists use the poor, unemployed young men and women of islamic countries, and increasingly our own country, by spurring them to action with the same class warfare rhetoric the left uses. Evil rich America, the downtrodden are told, is hoarding its wealth and stealing from you! They must be destroyed so that you can enjoy the wealth they now possess. The downtrodden masses, much like the entitlement class here in America, don’t realize when they attack a 4 star hotel in Islamibad or destroy a power plant or cell phone tower in Afghanistan that they are destroying the wealth that America and the world is trying to share with them. So they blow it up, kill dozens, drive more investment away and help to seal their own fate, keeping themselves downtrodden or entitled and remaining useful tools for OBL, AQ, the Tamil Tigers, MILF, or BHO and san fran nan.
The only way to win the War on Teror is to take their tools away.

Bin Laden
hagaylevy Sunday, July 12th at 7:21AM EST (link)I would say that the reason for this is that Bin Laden is still the no1 target…
Bin Laden is dead..

I agree, he's been dead since Tora Bora,
Achance (Diary) Sunday, July 12th at 12:17PM EST (link)but if GWB had had his head in a jar in his desk drawer, he couldn’t have told anyone. If he had, the cry to bring all the troops back home would have been irresistable.
