Al Jazeera scoops ‘military giants’ meeting between US, China in Hawaii

A Middle Eastern news service is the only media to carry a story of a significant military meeting between the U.S. and China.

(Pearl Harbor)–Al Jazeera, the Middle Eastern news agency, scooped a story about a military meeting between the U.S. and China that hasn’t appeared in a newspaper in either country. The headline said, ‘Military Giants Meet in Hawaii,’ and the story dated Oct. 20, 2008 revealed, “Major-General Zhong Zhiming [Chinese People’s Liberation Army] was leading a delegation of Chinese military officers on one of the first of many planned high-level exchanges, part of a new effort to break down barriers between these two military giants.” The meeting is being held at Pearl Harbor.

Zhong told Al Jazeera, “The frequent exchanges between the US and Chinese military are good for our future development and I think they’ll happen more and more and the relationship will get better.”

Chief Master Sergeant James A. Roy [U.S.] said “informal discussions” had helped to break down suspicions on both sides. “We’re interested in what their intentions are, and obviously as China, we want them to partake in the peace and stability across the Asia Pacific region,” Roy told Al Jazeera. The news service pointed out that similar meetings planned were cancelled by China for the near future because the U.S. government sold $5 billion worth of missiles and attack helicopters to Taiwan.

Al Jazeera noted the Pentagon has complained about transparency from China related to that country’s military buildup. The news service reported, “There are also concerns that China’s aggressive pursuit of energy resources in Africa and other areas well beyond Asia, could create areas of conflict with the Unites States.”

The only story of note in relation to Hawaii recently is presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama’s leaving his campaign to visit the state to see his maternal grandmother who is elderly and according to
The Honolulu Advertiser
, seriously ill.

But I just have that funny feeling I get in my gut. And it’s usually pretty accurate.

I posted this because I wondered if anyone knew anything about this meeting. I hope it doesn’t disappear off the board before people see it. The member diaries scroll so fast.

Here and Obama is coming Thursday and going back Saturday. His grandmother has been in the hospital but has improved and is out now. I pay pretty close attention to the local stuff here and have heard nothing of her illness until today.

I hope to God Obama is not invited to this meeting. more

SARANAC LAKE – Powerful generals and admirals from some of the most powerful nations on Earth are reportedly meeting somewhere in the local area this weekend after flying into the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear on Friday.

Among the passengers of a large Boeing 757 airplane with “United States of America” printed on its fuselage were top members of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff and their counterparts from France, Germany and another country, possibly Great Britain, according to Barry DeFuria, a town of Harrietstown councilman and Airport Committee member who was there when the plane landed. A top military delegation from Italy flew in on a separate Falcon airplane, DeFuria said.

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I just thought it was really strange there was this groundbreaking meeting with China and U.S. and only one media outlet in the world wrote about it.

I admit we are living in some really strange times, though.

When Biden talked about the “test” forthcoming and then Obama suspends his campaign this close to the election, well, I just wondered, that’s all.

And I’m still wondering about Biden’s speech. All the press releases for senate foreign relations have been scrubbed, even on the Internet Archive site going back a couple years.

Strange stuff.
