Happy Anniversary Arlen Specter!

Katy Abram

Happy Anniversary Arlen Specter!  He has now been a card carrying member of the democrat party for a full year.  One year ago today, after dusting off his old Democrat voter registration card from the 70′s, Senator Arlen Specter took the term “career politician” to new levels when he declared he was switching from the Republican Party to the Democrat Party.

So what has this past year shown us in regards to his principles and his party affiliation?  Let us look at his stances on three issues as both a Republican and now, Democrat.

Card Check

Republican Specter was strongly against the Employee Free Choice act, also known as “card check”, which would remove the secret ballot from union voting.  Democrat Specter, within months of being against card check, changed his mind when it was deemed politically expedient to support this legislation knowing unions would endorse him as a result.

Health Care Reform

During last years press conference newly named Democrat Specter stated, “I will not automatically be an automatic 60th vote (for health care reform).”  One would think this is true based off of his stance on the issue in 1994 when he was opposed to government run health care.   Republican Specter stood on the floor of Congress with a giant chart of 111 different bureaucracies created by the health care reform bill of the time.  Then he was against health care reform.  Now after the passage of the health care reform bill we are now painfully aware that Democrat Specter changed his mind like he changed his party affiliation…in an instant.  This is hypocrisy at its finest.

Defense of Marriage Act

Republican Specter supported the Defense of Marriage act.  He opposed gay marriage but supported civil union.  In October 2009, Democrat Specter stated that,

“The time has come to repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Enacted 13 years ago when the idea of same sex marriage was struggling for acceptance, the Act is a relic of a more tradition-bound time and culture.”

Now it is Senator Specter’s year for reelection or forced retirement.  Which will it be?  I contend that Senator Specter in fact has “awakened a sleeping giant” in and of himself. He stated last year,

“I was unwilling to subject my 29-year record in the United States Senate to the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate, but I am pleased to run in the primary on the Democratic ticket.”

But this year it will be up to Democrats first if they want someone who’s principles truly reflect their own or if they want a career politician who has been in office most of this author’s life.  Then, if Senator Specter makes it to November his record will be subject to the Republican Party whether he likes it or not.

PA Attorney General believes Constitution is a “living document”

Words have connotations.  When the words “living document” are uttered about the U.S. Constitution any conservative student of history will shutter with bewilderment and horror.  Those words were spoken on two separate occasions last weekend by Pennsylvania’s Attorney General, Tom Corbett.  I was present at the PA Leadership Conference when he first uttered those words from the podium as he was explaining why he should be elected as the next Governor of Pennsylvania.  The moment those words passed his lips an audible gasp swept across the room full of conservatives.

Now one may ask, why this is such an awful thing to say?  Allow President Obama to explain it himself and you will see why this room of conservatives was shocked by those specific words.

Barack Obama stated in his book, “The Audacity of Hope,” (pages 53-54)

“I appreciate the temptation on the part of Justice Scalia and others to assume our   democracy should be treated as fixed and unwavering; the fundamentalist faith    that if the original understanding of the Constitution is followed without question or deviation, and if we remain true to the rules that the Founders set forth, as they intended, then we will be rewarded and all good will flow.

Ultimately, though, I have to side with Justice Breyer’s view of the Constitution—that it is not a static but rather a living document, and must be read in the context of an ever-changing world.”

Progressives believe the Constitution is a living, breathing document. Their view is it is organic and easily changed to suit the needs of a changing society.  Those in the Tea Party movement and conservatives alike understand the Constitution from the view of original intent where the Founders intent guides our understanding of its application.  This is why Attorney General Corbett’s words have caused a stir.

The Pennsylvania Republican Committee’s Chairman, Rob Gleason, has chastised Corbett’s opponent Sam Rohrer for “creating an issue” after publicizing this video on his website.  Mr. Gleason, I beg to differ.  This issue was created by Mr. Corbett and the words he chose to use.  If those words were not something he believed then they should not have been said.  Say what you mean and mean what you say.

The Republican Committee is in for a rude awakening in May.  Citizens from across the state of Pennsylvania asked the committee to not endorse any candidates.  The Committee pressed onward and anointed those whom they felt were next in line.  It is time for the Committee to understand the principles are they are to stand for.  May I remind the Committee of 2004 and who they endorsed?  I would surely hate to see Pennsylvania end up with another Arlen Specter.

Racial Slurs yelled at Tea Party speaker by leftist

Who’s playing the race card?

I have heard over and over again that the law abiding members of the Tea Party movement are racist and hate mongers.  The left has done everything it can to discredit this movement within the parameters of Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals,”  by clothing health care reform “with moral garments.”  If the Tea Party movement is racist then why can’t the left provide audio or video substantiating this claim?

I had given a speech  at Freedom Fest in front of Independence Hall on March 6, 2010.  I was honored to meet Michael Johns, who travels the country speaking on behalf of the Tea Party movement.  During his speech racial slurs and epithets were yelled at him.

Mr. Johns spoke of “Mr. Obama” and the harm this administration has done to this country.  An unknown individual began screaming “President Obama! President Obama!  White Boy! President Obama!”  Obviously, this person was enraged that Mr. Johns didn’t use Obama’s new title.

I wonder where this unknown etiquette scholar was when the left was saying the same about “Mr. Bush?”  I remember hearing the main stream media always using the term Mr. instead of President.

I applaud Mr. Johns as he eloquently continued his speech solidifying his point of the increase in taxes and regulatory problems.  So when the left actually has evidence of racism within this movement I would love to hear it.  Until then let’s talk about the issues because I’m tired of feeling like I’m in high school.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Control

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of control

Katy Abram

Published on AmericanThinker.com April 4, 2010

Recently, two members of our government have spoken of the Declaration of Independence, referring to our Founding Fathers words of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”  They both tied this line to the health care legislation that was recently passed ensuring this was constitutional.

Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, had stumbled over those words of, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” during her final remarks before the bill was passed.

Congressman Phil Hare of Illinois was caught in a gotcha moment this past week while being questioned about healthcare by some concerned citizens.  He was asked where in the constitution health care is permitted.  The congressman’s quick answer was, “I don’t care about the Constitution to be honest with you…I care more about the people who are dying everyday…I believe it (the Declaration of Independence) says we have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Once I heard these two individuals utter these words I realized that they do not know the definition of liberty.

Liberty

is freedom from unjust or undue governmental control.

How can this health care law ensure our liberty when the government will be increasing our taxes,

redistributing wealth, and interfering with our personal choices?  The two are completely incompatible as it relates to this specific bill.

Now let’s look at the pursuit of happiness.  I certainly do not derive any happiness from this bill.  My family has a health

savings account with a high deductible, which we have been happy with.  The new health care bill has now mandated our deductible to be decreased significantly.  This may sound wonderful until you understand that our premiums will increase dramatically as a result.

So I’d like to personally thank the leftists and statists in our country that have begun the process to take away my liberty and pursuit of happiness.  My concern now is that the only one left is life.
