Labor Day 2010: Catholic Church Exposed in Call for Social Justice & Redistribution

I was born and raised as a Catholic. My parents were very devout and ensured I attended regular Sunday Masses, Catechism classes, participation in the Sacraments including two years of Confirmation classes, and I attended a Catholic High School. Clearly, my life has been heavily influenced by the Catholic Church.

Which is why I am saddened now at the prospect of denouncing my Catholicism.

Like many of you I’ve had an awakening about America’s heritage and what makes her great are the founding principles detailed in the Declaration of independence and in our Constitution.  I have been horrified as I’ve watched the Left’s mask peeled back revealing their agenda of redistribution of wealth and social justice, which simply cannot coexist with our founding principles that we are all given the equal chance to pursue happiness with no guarantee of equal outcome.

There has been much discussion recently on how socialistic ideology has invaded our religious institutions. I’ve learned to recognize code words used by the Left, so, after Mass this morning when I picked up a copy of the weekly bulletin, the message immediately raised a red flag with me.

My Pastor’s message discussed the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops 2010 Labor Day Statement entitled A New “Social Contract” for Today’s “New Things” written by Most Reverend William F. Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre (Long Island, NY), and Chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.

Committee on Domestic Justice? Really?

The Bishop’s five page statement compares the challenges of todays workers with those faced by workers of the Industrial Revolution. In 1891, Pope Leo XII I extended legitimacy to unions and “insisted on a family wage that corresponded to the needs of the worker and family”. Today’s message describes how Pope Benedict XVI links three interrelated components of society: the market, the state, and civil society and in part reads:

“Economic life undoubtedly requires contracts, in order to regulate relations of exchange between goods of equivalent value. But it also needs just laws and forms of redistribution governed by politics, and what it is more, it needs works redolent of the spirit of gift”

(Emphasis added)

In other words, the Pope says governments must create laws to ensure workers are treated justly and, by the way, this includes instituting programs for the redistribution wealth in the name of charity.

Obviously, Pope Benedict does not understand nor appreciate the basis for American government, that which gives all citizens equal opportunity, not equal outcome, which has allowed America to export freedom all over the world and with it an advancement of civilization never before realized. If you’ve read the book “The 5000 Year Leap” then you know what I’m talking about.

Since The Pope obviously is not American it’s somewhat understandable that he does not see how the Catholic teachings of social justice cannot coincide with our laws that protect private property.  But Bishop Murphy, the author of the 2010 Labor Day statement, is an American (or at least he lives here if he is not) and therefore has a duty, in my opinion, to respect the fundamental laws of our land by not preaching policy so completely contrary to our form of government.

Sadly, the Catholic Church is an instrument for Socialism infected all the way up to His Holiness the Pope.  Because of that, I will find my faith elsewhere.

P.S. Imagine my disappointment while researching for this very paper, my discovery of another writing of the U.S. Catholic Bishops from 1986: “Catholic Social Teaching: Economic Justice for All” in which they state:

“We believe that we honor our history best by working for the day when all our sisters and brothers share adequately in the American dream.”

That statement is just wrong on so many levels I don’t even know where to begin. Isn’t this the same philosophy that gave us the Community Reinvestment Act?

I won't denounce my Catholicism...however

fpete13527 (Diary) Sunday, September 5th at 2:32PM EST (link)

if Murphy and the Council of Catholic Bishops….and even the Pope, who resides in Socialist Europe, can’t see that this verbiage and doctrine is completely inappropriate….then I completely reject their leadership.

It’s bad enough that the Catholic Church didn’t dynamically reprimand the Catholic Clergy rogue abortion supporters of Pelosi. It’s also bad enough that the Catholic Church has allowed disgraces to humanity like Pfleger to go unchallenged. It’s also bad enough that with the exception of keeping a strong stand against abortion, the Catholics in vast numbers vote Democratic, thus supporting Pro-Abortion policies and a Party who is generally very against Christianity (unless faking it so that it can keep them politically expedient such as Pelosi, Biden, Kerry..and Obama) But to specifically write formal doctrine/policy that promotes or calls for “wealth re-distribution” by the Government…..then it is time to stop donations to the Catholic Church.

By writing this policy letter, the Catholic Church is deciding to be a further tool for the forwarding of the Obama/Dem Socialist agenda. As stated in multiple articles by the left, I.E. Obama and Democratic Party, the left is not even arguing that they are not enacting Socialism on their path to Communism. The Obamacrats now confirm, acknowledge, and speak of their new order openly.

At this point, I will voice my concerns to our local Bishop and Monsignor. I will not denounce my faith, however, I will ABSOLUTELY discontinue my donations to them if they are going to support this policy and philosophy of being a tool to support Government redistribution. Charitable giving is one of the highest forms of good. Charitable giving that becomes a tool for the Government, to enhance Socialism and Communism, is the highest form of BAD.

Catholic Minority....

Wonderfully stated!

My wife and I attend a church in Castro Valley CA. Yesterday, one of the Deacons gave a homely on (you guessed it) social justice. I listened to this man and his “good intentions” precede to preach about how we should carefully vote for politicians that help the poor etc. This, by the way, is not a rare occurrence in this parish as well as others we’ve attended in the area. I feel as if I’m a minority in my Catholic faith in these times.

I have a reproduction of an old Catholic catechism written around the turn of the century, when the church was truly Christ-centered and orthodox. There are at least 4 pages devoted to the evils of socialism and how it was condemned. It was considered a mortal sin to be involved with socialism in any capacity. How can the church of today possibly justify economic redistribution (I should add, forced), which indeed looks allot like socialism to me. Moreover, charity is a gift should be freely given and not forced upon the tax paying masses by, mostly, corrupt politicians. Could it be, in part, that some clerics and officials in the church don’t want to be burdened with the cost of helping the poor so they turn their heads and let the government redistribute money by extracting it under penalty of law from its citizens? Something seems terribly wrong with this!

I will continue to practice my Catholic faith but will focus mainly on the sacraments and look forward to the day when the church is once again Christ centered and orthodox.

Livermore Church

judyg Monday, September 5th at 6:41PM EST (link)

We, too, have been going to church in Livermore, Ca for 40+ years……and very content with it. Now we have discovered the Social Justice agenda and we’re very concerned. We have been watching EWTN where they preach the TRUE conservative way of the church and use the words Democrats and Republicans in their sermons with warnings of the true evils of politics. We have learned to love the priests and have our favorites. The 912 group on this side of the hill is interested in starting a “Conservative Catholic” group. Keep an eye on the SF 912 project.

The Social Justice agenda has been linked to the “New Age Religion” and our priests/bishops/pope are not aware that they are connected to Satan at his best. I write, often, to bishops etc. but it seems only to have resinated with EWTN. I HATE not going to mass, but I get soooo much from Father Pavone and Pacwa. Hope to connect with Bay Area Catholics in the near future.

Sorry to say that it is about $$$. Money is given by “other” groups to the churches with strings attached. Keep an eye on the Agenda 21 problems in the bay area and notice the connection to churches (Maurice Strong/George Soros etc). We have to be a voice in this and be the instrument that the Lord has asked us to be. He knows we are his tool and we must stand up for the “Christ Centered Church” of the past. Together, we might make a difference.

Blessings!!!

Wrong on illegal immigration too

SteveLA (Diary) Sunday, September 5th at 2:49PM EST (link)

jstjoan

The Catholic Church has been wrong on illegal immigration for years now, supporting sanctuary cities and the sanctuary movement for a long long time.

Why does it surprise you that the church is becoming more open and official in support of so called “social justice” movement, this latest move is just a logical extension of a wrong position on illegal immigration.

I’ve voiced my opinion to my priest that I believe masses held in the Spanish language are wrong and creates an intentional divide between the Hispanic catholic community and the rest of the congregation, There is no reason for them to assimilate because of this, which sends the message they need not assimilate into any other part of the community and it creates a special constituency in the church that, as you point out, has led to the sanctuary of illegals.

My denial of how anti-American the Catholic church is has ended.

2. At what cost?
3. What hard evidence do yo have?

Interesting perspective.

Uma Richie (Diary) Sunday, September 5th at 3:35PM EST (link)

I like Spanish Mass for exactly the reason you do not. I grew up in a town that had a Slovak church, an Irish-Italian church, a Lithuanian church, and a Byzantine Catholic church. My ancestors immigrated and become Americans, but on Sunday, they were free to take a break from assimilation and worship God in Latin and Church Slavonic, just like they did in the old country.

I completely agree that new Americans should join in the Melting Pot in terms of political allegiance, culture, and civil- academic-professional linguistics, but I would never deny them the choice of what language they should use when talking to God.

The difference I see

jstjoan (Diary) Sunday, September 5th at 3:47PM EST (link)

is that your ancestors, as did my own, took a break from assimilation on Sunday. The hispanics in my current church don’t bother assimilating at all.

You may be correct, or you may be expecting too much too fast, for example, ascribing the characteristics of someone “right off the boat” to the rest of the community.

Mass in all languages not anti-conservative

paint_it_red (Diary) Monday, September 6th at 4:03PM EST (link)

The Church has used the vernacular for Masses all over the world for nearly 50 years. Its function is not to force people to learn a language. To read this as a political stance against any conservative principle is a bit of a stretch.

“It is not good to cultivate a respect so much for the law as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think is right.” Henry David Thoreau

“The means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek.” Martin Luther King Jr.

I invite all Catholics to read for themselves

A_Texan (Diary) Sunday, September 5th at 3:04PM EST (link)

Here is the document–I read it and found much I agree with.
http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/national/labor_day_2010.pdf

This entire document repudiates both naked individualism and statism, both “greed is good” AND “the government is THE solution.”

Here are some parts I was especially heartened to read:

“While it is not the role of the Church to propose a concrete economic blueprint for the future, the words of Pope Benedict should remind us that a key, perhaps the key, to overcoming the current economic situation is to unleash the creative forces of men and women.”

“Jobs are the result of initiatives creating markets that offer new opportunities in response to new challenges.”

“The role of the market is clearly the major force for the development of a sound economy. The state has played and continues to play an important, perhaps increasingly important, role in the economy and in the regulation of markets. At times, the market and the state seem to be the only two factors…

“Perhaps the most undervalued and overlooked sector in this framework is that of civil society. Could a reawakening and new development of the roles of intermediary institutions, including voluntary associations and unions, be a force to call the market to a greater understanding of the centrality of the worker? Could they be a means to restrain, mediate, or hold accountable both the state and the marketplace? Could their voices help create greater economic and social justice, a more mutually respectful and collaborative stance by all the actors toward the economy, work, and wealth creation around the world?”

The thrust of the document is that the state and the individual have been overemphasized, to the exclusion of the civil society–VOLUNTARY associations.

On a related note–I’m working my way through Gilder–Wealth and Poverty. Fantastic stuff.

But isn't he still saying

jstjoan (Diary) Sunday, September 5th at 3:43PM EST (link)

that the point is “greater economic and social justice”? That (social justice) is what I’m saying is contrary to founding principles.

The thrust of the document is in the title: “Social Contract” for Today’s “New Things”. It’s based on the 1891 document, the first contract which “provided moral, and even spiritual, guidance for many of the great social reforms of the last century, including advances in public health, the banking system, public education, living wages, unions, and income security through the creation of Social Security; and the “New Thing” added to it now by Pope Benedict is the globalization of our economy.

The very last sentence reads: “A new social contract, which begins by honoring work and workers, must be forged that ultimately focuses on the common good of the entire human family.”

How is this not promoting collectivism?

Social justice is a word game

katesmith (Diary) Sunday, September 5th at 5:15PM EST (link)

Re immigrant assimilation and Catholics, I lived in a largely Spanish speaking immigrant community in Fla. for most of the past several years. Many there had left their country of origin 10, 20 or more years ago. Most had no desire to speak or learn English or assimilate into American ways. America is just a place where they can recreate the culture they came from. I showed my neighbor pictures of my family, of my father as a soldier in World War II and how he fought to defend American freedom. Not interested. Culturally, many yell instead of speaking in conversational tones, play loud music 14 hours straight, and tell the police they are entitled to be loud because they are Latin. The police in Florida don’t disagree. The result is a ‘weak’ neighborhood, criminals see people don’t respect their neighbors, leave garbage out with bugs flying around for days on end, etc. If you want a normal life you have to move away. This is the reality of the compassion of social justice.

Difference today isn't immigrants, it's us

A_Texan (Diary) Sunday, September 5th at 5:28PM EST (link)

100 years ago, Americans were a proud people, generous to immigrants who wanted to join us in our great enterprise–our confidence made our culture attractive. Our leaders in the universities, schools, media, government, etc. turned against America in the 60s, plus our culture coarsened tremendously. Becoming “American” far too often seems to mean becoming some combination of self-hating guilty liberal and/or abrasively vulgar.

American liberty was (and is) a beautiful and confident lady, but she has been made to appear to be a self-doubting and depressed slut.

Full disclosure: I am a Roman Catholic and have been for 65 years. I have not seen the statement of the USCCB. I am NOT a fan of the USCCB.

There are many good bishops but unfortunately, it often seems as if the USCCB has been taken over by Alinsky activists who are often eager to interpret the words of the Holy Father and of Jesus Christ Himself in their own political view.

Context is everything with an encyclical. Context is everything in any document. If you look at just a few phrases of the Declaration of Independence, it wouldn’t give you the whole picture.

The Holy Father has spoken on many issues, and I highly recommend that you read the Encyclical in question. It is CARITAS IN VERITATE and can be found at:

I'm not attacking the Pope

jstjoan (Diary) Monday, September 6th at 10:30AM EST (link)

I’m addressing his own words, and the words of the USCCB in a call for redistribution of wealth and the title of my post accurately reflects this.

The CV is cited several times in the Labor Day statement, and while those citations do discuss the moral side of economics, the Pope’s message is “The Church’s social doctrine has always maintained that justice must be applied to every phase of economic activity,”

Combine this with the Labor Day statement and the Bishops”Economic Justice for All” link at the bottom of my article and it is clear that the Catholic Church supports social justice

Look, I was baptised Catholic. But everyone likes to say how THEY have the true version of the religion. Just like when Obama says “we worship an awesome God”, which is of course crap. The reality is that the Pope has very different economic views than conservatives. There is a reason that the conference of Catholic bishops supported ObamaCare. The Vatican is left-wing on every issue except abortion. That is why Pelosi etc. get communion. They are actually in agreement w/ the bishops on 80-90% of the issues.

Any statement which includes "exposed" as if there were some conspiracy involved,

jdw4america (Diary) Monday, September 6th at 11:24AM EST (link)

does beg the question – if you’re not attacking the Church, what in hell are you doing?

If you take Benedict XVI out of context, his statements can mean anything you, or indeed, anything the USCCB, wants it to mean. If you want to know what the Catholic Church actually means by its teaching on social justice, read the The Catechism of the Catholic Church – available in almost every written language on the planet and in your local chainstore bookseller.

The only forms of government to which the Church objects are those which limit or indeed destroy the God-given liberties and rights of men.

Benedict XVI, like his immediate predecessor, both lived in countries dominated by totalitarian regimes, and are and were absolutely against the idea of a collectivist government. In fact, Benedict lived under both socialism and communism, seeing them both as inferior and unjust forms of government – especially when compared to a republican government.

As to the “influence” of the Church in your own life as being justification for smearing Her, I would suggest that since you have never actually identified yourself as a Catholic, and obviously see the Church as a cultural or familial habit, that you rest easily, you have no need to denounce an allegiance you do not possess. Nancy Pelosi too, so she claims, is a lifelong Catholic.

Please make a list ...

Uhhh, I would suggest that since you

obviously missed the very first sentence of my post that you re-read it where I said I was a Catholic.

And since you missed that, why don;t you go ahead and read the actual Labor Day statement in which the USCCB clearly calls for the same kind of social justice that the progressives in this country are calling for,

I have serious issues with this post

paint_it_red (Diary) Monday, September 6th at 4:30PM EST (link)

First off, a political web site should not be the outlet for theological discussion.

Second, a solid 25% or more of the GOP vote comes from Catholics, roughly the same percentage as that of the Democrats, so positing the religion at odds with conservative thought runs against the mission of this web site.

Third, the Catholic Church is not so much conservative or liberal as it is orthodox in its beliefs. To even attempt to place it on the political spectrum as one or the other is to miss the point of what it is about.

Fourth, to the extent one is looking at whether it takes conservative or liberal positions, I would submit that the vast supermajority of practicing Catholics I know are social conservatives and tend vote as such. My pastor regularly criticizes liberal politicians, including Obama, Pelosi, the Clintons, and others. Other priests I have heard talk about the need for all people to respect the just immigration laws of the land. A good friend of mine from college, himself now a priest, dedicated some of his time to helping people learn to speak English. The Pro-Life movement has known no greater ally in America than the Catholic Church. Every Pro-Life Supreme Court Justice for a long time has been Catholic, or converted to Catholicism on the Court. All the conservative Justices have been Catholics.

As far as Pope Benedict’s writings go, few have been such powerfully conservative voices in our lifetimes. His writings have emphasized powerful conservative principles such as subsidiarity, the belief that the lowest level of government capable of governing should do so – a principle which not only dovetails well with the conservative push for states’ rights and limited government, but more importantly, mirrors the rationale behind it. Not to mention his strong stances to protect the unborn, speaking out against embryonic stem cell research, cloning, infanticide, abortion, pornography, etc.

Finally, the Church’s call for social justices and helping the poor must be put in its proper context. The Church teaches people should give selflessly and tend their neighbor. This does not mean it is government’s role to do so. Unfortunately, this distinction is lost on many, including both many Catholics and many others of other faith backgrounds as well.

It is not unreasonable nor to be unexpected that people will argue over the best ways to discharge this basic Christian duty. At the end of the day though the Church is certainly not a force for liberalism or government forced wealth redistribution. It has stood against Nazism, Communism, and Pope Benedict himself has forcefully denounced socialism. What the Church is about is Her Sacraments and spiritual stewardship of her flock.

You are Blessed

judyg Monday, September 5th at 7:07PM EST (link)

Paint it,
You are Blessed to have a truly social conservative church. In our area, we have dozens and dozens of Catholic Churches who push the “Social Justice” agenda in the form of bulletins, CCD classes, church projects etc. When I went to EVERY church in our area (before the last election), and asked them to “Please state one simple thing….’There are “Pro Life” candidates running for office’”, I was chastised, humiliated, hung up on and more. Two churches agreed to state that, but the rest were horrified. I called the diocese and spoke to the “Pro Life” committee leader – he wasn’t surprised at all. I was told I’d be SHOCKED at how many (in this area) believed in pro choice and social justice. I parked my car across the street with signs that listed “Pro Life” candidates and was asked to move the car.
My dream is to, one day, say that we have “Paint it’s” Blessings and live our spiritual life the way our Lord planned. Unfortunately, right now, it’s up to us to educate our liberal clergy and let them know we won’t stand for this kind of preaching/indoctrination. We MUST stand together – like we are doing here – and make plans to steer our churches toward your Blessed Church’s theological beliefs. Feel fortunate and thank the Lord each day for your wonderful Church and Priests!! And pray for those of us (especially our churches/priests/bishops & dioceses) who aren’t as fortunate.
Blessings!!

Sadly, the Catholics believe in some falsehoods

lastgopinillinois (Diary) Monday, September 5th at 7:21PM EST (link)

In the eyes of Jesus, the homeless panhandler did NOT have a good chance of getting in to heaven.
Paraphrasing his words, since I dont know the exact quote, Jesus said;
“Blessed are those who have toiled, for they have found the right life”.
Jesus wanted people to be productive. At that time in history, most common folk worked in agriculture and trade in livestock for the purpose of producing food. Those things at that time were considered by followers of Jesus to be “participating in creation” an activity God would smile upon !
I dont know where the Catholic church gets their philosophy of govt as the main proliferator of charity. Seems to me they they would have a better arguement that it should be the people and private business as the main proliferators of charity. After all, govt as a whole is just a worldly establishment, vs people actually have the chance to go to heaven. You see what I mean ?

In the beginning, God created earth to be an extension of his vast Kingdom and his LOVE was so great that he wanted to share it with man, whom he created in his own image and likeness and gave him free will.
To this very principal, the Founding Fathers of our nation decreed that freedom is a God-given in-alienable right of all the people.

The Catholic Bishops are quite liberal, unfortunately.

Abandoning the Church in its hour of need is not the solution

civil truth (Diary) Monday, September 5th at 9:48PM EST (link)

From the beginning, Jesus had to work through flawed agents – because we all are flawed and fall short. The Church as well, though embued with the Spirit, also will fall short because it is comprised of flawed individuals. For that reason, we are urged to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.

Which leads to this variant on the famous Anne Landers question to anyone who would leave a relationship: can you better serve Christ (and contending for the Faith) by staying within the Church or going elsewhere?

I would argue here that you are rushing to judgment – in particular

1) erroneously utilizing this one statement of a set of American bishops as evidence that the entire Catholic Church, Pope on downwards, has fallen in apostacy. Several, especially A_Texan and grandma, have presented contrary evidence of sufficient persuasion that you owe it to yourself and God to fully examine the whole teaching of the Church on this matter rather than acting precipitously based on your interpretation of what you think the Church is saying.

2) And even if you see some error in the Church’s teachings on social justice, you still need to examine the Church’s teachings on the whole range of social and spiritual issues – included sanctity and protection of life, sexual ethics, family, relationship to God, forgiveness of sin, etc. – before passing judgment on whether the Church has fallen into irremediable apostasy.

3) You also need to at least be open in your heart to receiving correction from church teaching, rather than starting from the position of maintaining your rightness on these matters. Note I said “open in your heart” – I’m talking about attitude, not intellectual abdication.

I would hope you would avoid the same error that so many Catholics with liberal views have done, which is to abandon the church because it doesn’t conform to their preconceived standards (frequently around sex issues or the role of women in the church) rather having a teachable spirit.

In brief, rebels (those liberals who have chosen the path of subversion rather than abandoning the Church) have gained a strong foothold in the administrative structures of the Church, but the battle is not over by any means. But panic is a sure way of turning ultimate victory into immediate defeat. After all, Christ’s promise stands that the power of hell will not prevail against the Church built on the Rock.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis
