CNN Poll: 59% of Americans Now in Opposition to Obama’s Health Care Plan

A majority of Americans hold a generally negative view of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, according to a new CNN poll which found 59 percent of respondents now in opposition to the plan.

After a dozen pro-life Democrats hold-outs lead by Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak caved Sunday to increasing pressure from the White House, the House adopted on a strictly party-line vote the Senate’s bill, which now awaits the President’s signature.

Among the most salient of Republican talking points on health care, the poll showed, were the issues of cost and quality, which Congressional Republicans had said the bill fundamentally failed to address.

62 percent believed the new reforms would result in a spike in personal medical expenses, while only 21 percent said they would remain the same. In September of last year, a similar poll found 47 percent believed the President’s plan would increase medical costs; 35 percent said costs would remain the same.

Democrats hemorrhaged support on the issue of quality, too. The number of those who said their families would be better off dropped nominally, while a significant margin shifted their opinion from September that their families would be “about the same” to “worse off.” 47 percent held the view their families would fare worse if the legislation was implemented; 19 percent responded they would be better off; and 33 percent said they would be about the same.

Most damaging–insomuch as anything apart from legal challenges can derail the near-certain implementation of ObamaCare–is that respondents universally held the opinion that the President’s reforms will increase federal deficits. 70 percent said the bill will result in higher deficits; 17 percent said it was deficit neutral; and only 12 percent said it would reduce the nation’s deficit.

That only a few of the Stupak block voted for ObamaCare, not the entire block.

I’m so pi… spitting-nails irritated, and they’re all Democrats, so I”m not overly concerned about setting the record straight for their sake, but thought it would be helpful for the original post.

The only two I saw that 'held' were Lipinsky and Berry.

eburke (Diary) Monday, March 22nd at 3:35PM EST (link)

Berry’s retiring so maybe he actually voted his conscience (he’s been unyielding in his criticism of Barry since he announced his retirement)

Lipinsky? Who knows. Conscience? Or did he just get a ‘get out of jail free’ card ’cause they had the votes to pass it?

After getting pwned by Stupak and actually thinking that all his pious bleatings about the unborn actually meant that he gave 2 sh**s about innocent babies, I don’t believe a single effin’ thing about these shysters.

for this mess because, if I’m not mistaken, not one of them spoke out for the truth. Someone should have stood up to the lies and told the truth about what this bill actually does. They’re all responsible, and is there any Democrat who will vote to repeal? Doubtful. So, they must go even if they voted No this time. IMHO

Absolutely, at best they voted the right way and mumbled a few things

How could they respond in truth – they don’t know the truth, for they never read the bill! The Dims are all lemmings, following Die Furhers Pelosi & Reid w/o question. Is it possible that they all Dims are Idiots? I think their action has proven the point! House in jeopardy

Thomas_Hauber Monday, March 22nd at 2:27PM EST (link)

Before they passed this healthcare the Dems were looking at a 25-35 house loss. Based on how mad everyone is, and the opposition of the Tea Party, and especially independents I would imagine that the Dems are now looking at a 45-60 seat loss, which would give the house back to the republicans.

Maybe after some more supposedly “safe” seats are lost they will rue the day they voted this monstrosity in.

I'm not sure..

wirez Monday, March 22nd at 3:01PM EST (link)

Not even a Republican seizure of Congress would allow for a successful repeal of Health Care reform. Obama has the veto pen and, any GOP effort to repeal isn’t going to require 218 votes in the House and 51 in the Senate, it’s going to require 290 and 67.

That would require, even if the GOP were able to hold all 34 Democratic dissidents (unlikely), a 78 seat gain in the House for the GOP.

In the Senate it is a little more burdensome. A twenty-six seat gain, which would be particularly problematic, given that there aren’t 26 Democrats running for re-election in this cycle.

From the CNN article:

“The CNN poll also suggests that public opposition to health care will not necessarily be a boon to Republicans in the 2010 midterm elections in Congress.

Roughly one in five of respondents who said they opposed the bill did so because it was not liberal enough, and those people are unlikely to vote Republican. Take them out of the picture and opposition to the bill because it is too liberal is 43 percent.”

Based on this, I’m afraid that there’s no guarantee we’re going to sweep the midterms.

Yes but,

Adrian Monday, March 22nd at 2:55PM EST (link)

it doesn’t matter if 100% of Americans oppose the bill, or I guess law, now. MAYBE the Socialists will lose big in November, and maybe they won’t. Americans might be mad now, but I doubt they’ll stay that way. The vast majority seem pretty easy to placate. As long as the cable tv stays on so they can watch football and American Idol, they’ll soon forget why they were upset.

That at least is my fear. If the elections were next month I wouldn’t be too worried, but November is a long, LONG way off, at least in terms of voter attention span.

Defeatism is stupid and contagious.

NoDoze Monday, March 22nd at 3:13PM EST (link)

The long time before the elections is a good thing. It is just short enough to keep the momentum against HCR going, and long enough to give real conservatives (not defeatist shills), time to focus their campaigns.

Shut up with the negativism!

My grandmother said:

NoDoze Monday, March 22nd at 3:35PM EST (link)

“Can’t” never does anything, because it never tries.

Many people said before BHO started pushing his Progressive agenda, “He can’t do that. This is America. The American people won’t stand for it.”

The Progressives said, “Yes we can.” And they looked for any and every way to get it done. Yesterday they made a big step toward getting it done. Sure, there is more for them to do, and they didn’t do it ethically or honestly, and we must hold ourselves to a higher standard than do they hold themselves, but there is much we can do to ultimately defeat, not only this monstrosity, but push back the Progressive agenda to at least a manageable level.

The lesson that we need to learn is that we can succeed if we try, and there are many tools, resources, and opportunities available to us. Let us THINK, then let us ACT, using every ethical tool available to us in this fight. We may not immediately get everything we want, but we can get started in the right direction right now. Conservatives can prevail!

Okay,

Adrian Monday, March 22nd at 3:44PM EST (link)

that’s better than shut up. ;)

I’m not defeatist at all, and I didn’t mean to imply that I think it’s game over. But, a lot of people do seem to be acting like retaking Congress is a done deal, and once that’s done the health care debacle will be fixed.

Neither of those is a foregone conclusion. There is a lot of hard (and unfortunately, expensive) work that will have to be done. You are right in that we’re somewhat fortunate in having the time to do it.

Problems are opportunity in disguise. Focus and direct the anger at the right target. Think about ways to publicize the real-world effects of their fascist laws and policies. Be a citizen reporter. Take your cellphone camera and take pictures. take an MP3 recorder with you and get real quotes from real people being oppressed by the fascists and spread them across the internet.

We also need to learn to use some of their methods very well, such as the Alinski rule of targeting and ridiculing the opposition. There is much to ridicule in what they do and say. Take advantage of it.

“Americans might be mad now, but I doubt they’ll stay that way.”

The MSM have been saying this since August . If anything, the anger has only grown since then.

Audux is right: unemployment situation is not going to dramatically improve for the better, we all know how the deficit will look, decent shot the US loses their AAA rating, AND the Dems still need to placate their base with immigration reform/amnesty.

None of this is good for the Dems and the conservative base is fired up to a degree I haven’t seen in my life, including 94. In an off year election where only 40% of citizens turn out to vote, a fired up energized base (with an already angry US population in a sagging economy) will be huge.

November cannot come soon enough!

I'm not concerned about people forgetting.

garbear Monday, March 22nd at 4:23PM EST (link)

If you’ll remember, the ’94 Republican takeover really began with Clinton’s ’93 tax hikes–a Democrat only vote–and Clinton’s ’93 attempted takeover of health care. 1994 was a long way off, yet . . .

And then the spark hit in spring ’94 with the check kiting scandal. Remember that? It hit in the spring. November came and nobody had forgotten.

I’m not worried about this November. It will be an earthquake. The tsunami will then follow in Nov 2012.

Think About This

tom246 Monday, March 22nd at 3:09PM EST (link)

I am as upset as anyone over what happened last night. The democrats in the House managed to do with one vote what no enemy of this country has done in over 233 years. In fact, from the battle of Bunker Hill to Kandahar Province the United States has defended its constitution with the blood of patriots. Last night that was usurped by the “progressives”.

I must however look at this from another perspective that of a Christian. Now a days that is rather unpopular in fact, just mentioning Christ is enough to make “Statists” go into apoplexy. But I must say that it seems the stage is very well set for the LORD to return. America is now deeply divided, politicians are definitely un-trusted, and Obama is the perfect Narcissist to play a “king” during the tribulation period for the Anti-Christ.

I of course have no idea when the LORD will return -I hope it’s soon, but I do know this. Ultimately he is in control, ridicule me , this post, or our country all you want. There is a higher power calling the shots. Personally that makes me feel better.

Now since I don’t know when the LORD will return I will oppose this tyranny with every ounce of strength I have. We are not done, we ain’t even begun yet! Please remember that it was 6 months from the bombing of Pearl Harbor until the first American victory in WWII. It took longer than that for the first victory during the Revolutionary war, and it took more than 4 years to end the Civil war. I don’t mean that we need to start shooting people, -maybe incarcerate a few for treason. We just need to resists and continue to hold these people accountable at every turn. Keep calling them and writing them, remind them that the election is only a few months away and that we remember.

It is upsetting and

irishgirl Monday, March 22nd at 3:24PM EST (link)

somewhat depressing. But I think the American people will hold strong and will remember this all the way to November. I just looked online at a poll at MSNBC and 64.9% of respondents were “Angry” that the bill had passed. That’s a substantial percentage in my opinion. Somewhere around 20% were excited and the balance was undecided.

Now that it has passed the House...

Ed54 (Diary) Monday, March 22nd at 3:27PM EST (link)

That “59% oppose” figure is misleading, because it lumps in opposition from Liberals and Conservatives who are unlikely to make common cause.

39% support the bill. Of the 59% who oppose, 43% oppose it because it is too liberal, while 13% oppose it because it is not liberal enough. So 52% of Americans think the bill takes us in the right direction. We who support reversing the bill are in a minority.

I want to believe that this bill will hand control of Congress to the GOP, but I just do not see it. Logically the 13% who want a more liberal policy will not support repeal. Rather, they will seek an increased Dem majority to amend the law further to the left.

51 percent support Obama over Congressional Republicans to deal with “health care,” and less than 10 percent would volunteer neither.

While a lot of the liberals polled are unlikely to vote, it’s not enough. Even the opponents don’t care. They can still take it or leave it. Some may think it is better than nothing, and they don’t want the time or effort spent on repealing it. They will have other priorities. How much LESS they will care many years from now! Priorities will be far different.

What’s more, electable Republicans won’t do anything, at least not in unison. On domestic matters, they are inert and certainly won’t try to do anything as “controversial” as Democrats would.

This will go badly for the Democrats

MikeG (Diary) Monday, March 22nd at 3:32PM EST (link)

I don’t think they truly understand what they’ve gotten themselves in for, insulated as they are in their DC/MSM bubble. The American people don’t take kindly to having their will ignored by their elected representatives. One of the major ways we are different from Europe is that there are no roots in this country for the concept of rule by the enlightened few. Americans, when they go to the ballot box, have no nagging voice in the back of their heads suggesting that maybe they ARE just peasants, and that their feudal lords know best how to run the manor.

When I came into work today I was explaining the reconciliation process to one of my like-minded colleagues. Another coworker in the break room said, “I don’t talk politics, even though I’m a strong Democrat,” A minute later she lowered her voice and told me, “Yeah, it’s funny, I’m a strong Democrat, but I’m not very happy with Obama right now, and not just because of health care,” I know the plural of anecdote is not data, but if my friend is any indication of how Democratic voters are feeling, November is going to be a bloodbath.

Provided, of course, we run hard, we run conservative, and we run against this bill. Period.

I agree with the posts today that re-working is not an option and RINOS who don’t have the stomach to push for repeal will not be tolerated. While I certainly feel that we have hit the nadir, I also think that Obama etal. have finally roused the sleepng giant which is the average center-right American. Republicans (real ones) need to get the November strategy in full gear now to connect with these people and harness this momentum.

With all those pictures oppressing the viewers every night, of happy shills, of happy MAObama smiling and waving in his best Alfred E. Newman imitation, the tendency will be to wonder if things are really that bad, and to lose the anger and the outrage.

Polls will show acceptance of MAObamCare growing slowly but surely, and even if they do not, MSM polls will show that anyway! :)

Fatigue from opposing the idiocy for months on end is what they are counting on. Yes, they will lose seats in November, but the MSM will claim that the Dems did not lose as many as feared, even if they do, that the sun still came up in the East and set in the West, and that things are just fine.

Relax, pay your taxes, it’s morning in MAObamastan! :)

BE VERY WARY of this poll

Lords86 (Diary) Monday, March 22nd at 4:40PM EST (link)

This is and will be used by the Dems to show that support for the bill grows between now and November – this is part of a clear Dem strategy that goes along the lines of Obama is finally making a connection with the people and when they find out about it, they like it more and more.

Do not . . . I repeat . . . do not trust CNN’s polls in this matter.

Just wait.

60% now… but just wait.

6 months of the being the best thing ever by the cast of The View, nightly stories on the news showing how great it is, occasional references to how much its great in popular sitcoms, etc.. and it will be 90% LOVE IT by fall!

At least the American People 'get it'.

That gives me some measure of hope. And watching Ryan, Pence, Boehner, Issa, ……. gives me hope too.

I’m hoping alot of Obama voters feel that ‘burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice shame on me” describes their way of thinking going forward. I will do everything I can, but we need the moderate Obama voters to revolt. And I think they will. This in not what they voted for. They just didn’t believe us back then.

CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION

bobojake (Diary) Monday, March 22nd at 5:10PM EST (link)

obama is the most corrupt incompetent person to ever hold the office of the President of the United States. With his training and tactics in ACORN he bankrupt them with corrupt ways and will try to do the same to the United States but will not succeed.
Sunday was the darkest day in the History of the United States since I was born in 1944, far worst then any wars we were in fighting for freedom, far worst on the lives of Americans then 9-11 was.
We will not let marxist-socialism destroy the freedom and liberty of our Grandchildren.
We Americans have come to far in over 200 years to let an incompetent Chicago thug take over OUR NATION.

I used to think that a vote for Obama was an act

of stupidity.
Now I feel it may have been an act of treason.

Yeah. . .

From MSNBC

This is just an online poll, but still on MSNBC it’s something:

66% Angry about the health care bill

Even if repealing it isn't doable

kevhead62 Monday, March 22nd at 6:38PM EST (link)

when the Congress changes, the funding can be withheld/starved until BO is gone after one term. Until then, Repeal the Bill has to be the war cry.
I don’t believe the majority of Americans want the government to control their lives. There are too many of us who understand freedom and don’t want socialism/fascism to be the predominant form of governing. We won’t go away quietly, and I believe the next Congress will do what it can do reverse the piece of crap BO is going to sign.

I think..

The taxes kicking in years before the benefits may help in getting the bill repealed. Your taxes going up and you see NO benefit should anger some people.

I have a co worker who was so exited that there where going to get health insurance later this week from Obama after he signs it (never mind the fact that our company HAS a plan they refused) did a “wait, what?” moment when I said “uhh no.. you don’t!” and explained it will be a good 3-4 years before the goodies start getting doled out. But you get to start paying for them soon.

The five or six people in this country who might ever see any benefit from this thing (in terms of access to more affordable health care) are not being taxed, at least not directly.

I could be mistaken, but I believe all the new taxes are on health care itself (the bill is full of such irony) and the “wealthy.”

Bill O'Reilly is smoking dope- again. He wonders if you'll stay angry.

He wonders if we’ll stay angry now that the bill has passed. Here was my response.

Man, sometimes I wonder if Bill is on drugs. Y’know, the legal type his doctor insists he takes to keep calm.

Will you still be upset in November or will you calm down. Let’s see, every day we will hear or see Nancy and Obama. We will be reminded of the crimes, bribery and dismissive attitude they showed us. Hmmm… Human nature. Let’s see….

In addition, what Bill doesn’t realize is they aren’t done. Not nearly. They will push it through the Senate, breaking the rules there. They will push immigration in order to get a new voting bloc secured. They will also push a number of smaller laws through before November including issues concerning privacy, land rights, Internet, radio and now I hear next stop- Climate change. They won’t stop until they build the basic foundation of the New America. It will be done by November, before the Republicans crash the party.

Right now I suggest we vote in almost any Republican that will win, concentrating on getting as many conservatives as possible. We need to switch majorities in order to stop Nancy from pushing anything else through after November. Will the Republican establishment take down healthcare? Probably not. Obama controls the White House for almost three more years. However, I’m convinced the anger will not go away. It can’t. Every new tax, every new rule, every new failure will remind us how bad it was.

Bill O'Reilly Is Not a Conservative - His Only Ideology Is Bill O'Reilly (nt)

IJB Tuesday, March 23rd at 12:15AM EST (link)

he is only conservative on social issues

Doc Holliday (Diary) Tuesday, March 23rd at 12:29AM EST (link)

and he is a populist. This combination leans heavily towards statism. There are many who have no problems with statism and demonization of the rich, they just want their personal views to be pushed by the state.

of course O’reilly is a megalomaniac blowhard. I have never understood his appeal. People can mention his battles with GE, MSNBC, and Olberaman. But when you really think about it, those battles have about as much substance behind them as the battles between the Cowboys and Redskins. They are not ideological, just fighting over who is the best at what they do.
