Senator Tom Coburn Thursday put his colleagues in the lower chamber on advance notice, vowing to torpedo any promises of patronage made by President Barack Obama to wavering House Democrats.
Coburn promised at a health care presser on Capitol Hill today that he would exercise his senatorial prerogative to hold all nominations of vote-switching House Democrats who lose their reelection bids this Fall. The new maneuver aimed at scuttling Democratic vote whipping efforts sent an unmistakeable message to the White House: Senate Republicans will do everything in their power to prevent the bill’s passage, even if that means preemptively expending political capital.
“I want to send a couple messages to my colleagues in the House. If you voted no and you vote yes and you lose your election, and you think any nomination to a federal position isn’t going to held in the Senate, I’ve got news for you,” Coburn, a physician whose been among the Senate’s most vocal opponents of the bill, said. “It’s going to be held.”
While House Republicans remain publicly confident the caucus will unanimously reject the bill, speculation looms large over Representative Joseph Cao, who is said to be undecided on the legislation. Still, Coburn’s warning has little bearing for Republicans.
39 Democrats voted against the bill last year. Representative Dennis Kucinich became the first Democrat to change course, as he surrendered yesterday to intense White House lobbying to support the bill.
“If you think you can cut a deal now and it not come out until after the election, I want to tell you that isn’t going to happen and be prepared to defend selling your vote in the House,” warned Coburn.

stigmo Thursday, March 18th at 3:23PM EST (link)Call your rep who voted Yes on the Slaughter Rule today, and just ask them to explain the rule. When they do explain it start innocently asking questions like
-”But doesn’t the Constitution say the same bill has to pass both houses before it can be signed?”
-”Why don’t they just pass the bill and then go through reconciliation?”
-”Is it a sure thing that the Senate will vote on reconciliation?”
When they start answering your questions, your reaction will be one of two possibilities:
-Rage
-Laughter
Choose laughter for your own health.

GJ Merits (Diary) Thursday, March 18th at 4:04PM EST (link)You are talking about something that was a major event that lead to the Civil War. Granted the federal powers are now tyrants and I have no belief for one second that any federal court is going to uphold any of the state’s lawsuits or movements to nullify, so add the courts to that and you basically have what we had with the sovereign British parliament putting us under their thumb and precipitating the War Of Independence. Abusive and contemptuous central powers.
Granted we now have the exact same problem now with the British parliament replaced by DC and the three branches. It seems your thinking is that violence is on the horizon. Do you not see any way, other than resigned acceptance of being lorded over by a bunch of elitists, to avoid this path?
If I read the tea leaves now, people are just not going to stand for this, but I don’t think they know what to do to “not stand for this”. I Think That Can Be Avoided
GJ Merits (Diary) Thursday, March 18th at 5:08PM EST (link)Achance appears to be concerned about this per his reference to the Wilmot Proviso. I hope to God he is wrong, but I am beginning to sense something is about to explode. It could be the sheer emotional investment many of us have had during this fight just spilling out, but I am reading words like this all over the internet and it is a little disconcerting. So what happens if ObamaCare passes? Obviously the states will find themselves in dire financial waters, not to mention the country as a whole.
Its a dirty word, and I won’t debate it further after mentioning it if the moderator tells me to shut up.
If this bill passes, the entire grassroots populace needs to pivot to their state legislators and governors, particularly if they are exposed to recalls, and demand full and unconditional nullification of ObamaCare. If 20-30 states do this and the courts strike it down, the next step will probably be the feds withholding funds from the states. That can be addressed with language in the nullification bill (some of it has already been written so boilerplates do exist) to create state income tax escrow accounts to withhold tax dollars from the federal government so the states have access to funds and then pay the federal government what they believe the feds “deserve” for lack of a better word. ObamaCare will bankrupt them anyway.
Get enough states to do this and Obama will not have the manpower to enforce the law. Get 40 states or more and he definitely does not have the manpower. They are being unreasonable, so we need to return the favor, although what the states would be doing would be asserting their rights under the 10th amendment to be free from tyranny, something not unreasonable at all.
If only a few states do it, then the NG and military could be used against the states. Obama has to count on or we have to be fearful they would follow orders that violated their oath to uphold and protect the constitution. His reaction to the recent Honduras incident is telling. However, with a large enough number of states, even this issue is mitigated if not removed completely.
The alternative is what you write. When I argue the above approach I am attempting to avoid violence – particularly of the asymmetrical kind which is the form I fear it will take. This country won’t be the same.
Obama is bankrupting us at an insane pace, Washington is no longer just out of control, they are obviously outright tyrannical. I don’t know of any other solution unless somehow, someway the SCOTUS steps in immediately and allows nullification or allows the lawsuits on the mandate. But then my question is, if the mandate is struck down, what are we left with? More insane spending to pay for the shell that is left. So to me the SCOTUS has to back nullification or people are going to go apesh*t and demand nullification regardless of the SCOTUS ruling. In other words, any lawsuit or nullification must strike down the entire bill. If the mandate is the only entity open to a lawsuit, then I don’t see that approach as viable. The money pit is still there.
As there are excellent arguments why the final arbiters of the constitution are the states and not the SCOTUS, we will find ourselves in a constitutional crisis. I have a feeling this is what Obama wants, but I believe he underestimates our will. If our will is great enough, he will lose.
I can’t see a way around any of this. If all the powers are against you at the federal level then you either roll over and accept the fall of this country – probably economic, or you do something. The train is off the tracks here. The NHS in Britain is not called the “60 year failure” for nothing. And we are going to try this with 300 million people to their 60 million. We either take back this country now or we lose it forever. Most of the founders were pessimistic about the Republic holding. It comes down to us, right here, right now.
I can only point folks to www.tenthamendmentcenter.com. I have also written a diary on this site and on my off-site blog.
