New York Democratic Rep. Eric Massa may not be ready to leave Washington, hinting in an interview he may rescind his resignation, scheduled for 5 P.M. Monday.
On his weekly radio show, Massa, one of thirty-nine Democrats who voted against last year’s health care bill, said House leadership was orchestrating a public relations campaign against him for the sake of accelerating his resignation and lowering the number of votes Democratic whips must secure for health care’s passage.
“Mine is now the deciding vote on the health care bill, and this administration and this House leadership have said, quote unquote, they will stop at nothing to pass this health care bill,” Massa said. “And now they’ve gotten rid of me and it will pass. You connect the dots.”
Reports surfaced Wednesday indication Massa was retiring, citing recurrence of cancer, while others still said the freshman Democrat was under review by a House ethics panel for sexually harassing a junior male aide.
At various points in the hour-and-a-half-long broadcast, Massa indicated he would rescind his resignation if the Pelosi-Hoyer power play became national news.
“I’m not going to be a Congressman as of 5 o’clock [Monday] afternoon. The only way to stop that is for me to rescind my resignation. That’s the only way to stop it. And the only way that’s going to happen is if this becomes a national story.”
He acknowledged, however, that reneging on his promise to resign would revive a stalled ethics probe into his reported sexual misconduct with staff.
In response to a caller suggesting he remain in office, Massa said: “That’s very kind of you, but understand what that means for me. It means that a group of lawyers are going to try and rip me and my family limb from limb. And you’ve already seen it in the newspapers. It’s a piranha feeding frenzy.”

There are a TON of links on Drudge related to this
bk (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 9:38AM EST (link)Massa’s point seems to be that with him it fails 216-216; without him it passes 216-215. If so then it would be funny to see him rescind his resignation as revenge against Hoyer and company who stabbed him in the back.
This is just delicious

earlgrey (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 9:56AM EST (link)Why not give it a shot if you have some time.
How much stock should we put in his claim that he is the deciding vote?
stigmo Monday, March 8th at 9:57AM EST (link)I’m going to have a heart attack by the time I’m 30 if this health care thing continues much longer.
Not much
In The Hook (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 10:18AM EST (link)Without this investigation, I doubt Massa would have stayed a no if the vote came down to him. Same with Kucinich. They’d never do something that crazy. But now? Now I think if he refuses to resign that he will indeed vote against the bill just to spite Hoyer and Pelosi.
And I fully encourage him to do so.

He's claiming that off of the technicality...
Brian_Roastbeef (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 10:56AM EST (link)If we assume Cao is a no and Murtha’s death and the retirements… and if Stupak folds, and if Pelosi hasn’t been able to squeeze and No votes into Yes and if, etc…
His No vote is important, and it could be a deciding vote, but he is playing up the role so that conservatives, Republicans, moderates, and independents drum up enough support for him to justify rescinding his resignation. He has apparently decided that this issue gives him the best chance to hang on to his seat a little bit longer, and so he’s playing it for all that its worth.
Anyway, it is sneaky, I encourage it and think we all should. He’s one more vote now even more thoroughly committed as a No. Plus he’s throwing a nice big pile of junk to Nancy and Rahm. Who could ask for anything more? Go Massa.
If no one else changes their vote his would be the deciding vote, right?
bk (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 10:19AM EST (link)Cao is a known flip to make it 219-216 among the originals. Abercrombie and Wexler voted yes but have resigned, so it’s down to 217-216. Murtha voted yes but he’s gone too, so that drops it to 216-216.
So even if Stupak’s crew stays on board it goes down unless a no flips to yes to make it 217-215 or disappears to make it 216-215. Deal could have made the latter happen, so he’s holding off his resignation. If Massa does the same then we’re still at 216-216.
With it a tie, Pelosi needs one more no-to-yes flip than any Stupak yes-to-no flips.
Yeah
stigmo Monday, March 8th at 10:41AM EST (link)But there were those few goons who switched from no to yes.
But I suspect Stupak and at least some of his crew will switch the other way -nt

Obama keeps score
erp617 Monday, March 8th at 10:06AM EST (link)I just read in a local Florida paper that the reason NASA was dropped like a hot potato even though Obama pledged to keep it running is that the congresswoman in the Canaveral district voted against his health insurance scam.
Let’s face it wouldn’t be hard to get some aide to lodge a complaint against Massa even if it’s completely bogus, but even if he’s guilty of something, it’s nothing on the scale of what Obama and his thugs are doing.
REPUBLICANS
patriotparty1 (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 10:10AM EST (link)need to get going, and get calling Massa. Ask him NOT to resign. If he is so mad, let him screw them. Back him up, tell him we will support him if he stays. Turn independent or repub and we will help him!

He only opposed this legislation because it isn’t single-payer, which means that if push came to shove he’d break anyway. So you can’t even rely on him being a steadfast no vote.

Moe, I agree. The fireworks would be entertaining but,
Old_Crow (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 10:40AM EST (link)Massa is to the left of the current legislation. Who knows what kind of unseemly deal the dems might cut to get his vote. Maybe even Barney F would friend him…
Bottom line: Does America need people like him in public office?
No.

Massa was a Republican
Scope (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 12:08PM EST (link)From what I heard on Beck this morning, he switched to Democrat because he disagreed with parts of the Iraq war.
He voted against Crap and Tax, and he voted against Obamacare the first time around.
Speaking of ethics, think Rangel. No ethics lapses are justifiable, but, Rangel has been having ethics lapses for years, and has been using our tax payer dollars in order to do so, while avoiding paying his own taxes. So now, Massa becomes the Democrat version of the Republicans Foley. Pelosi isn’t trying to run him out of town because of his sexual ethics, she is trying to run him out of town because she thinks it unethical to vote against Obamacare.
I hope he stays and does become the deciding vote for Obamacare to go down. In that respect, he will be a hero.
What? No Judgeship for Little Brother?
Repair_Man_Jack (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 10:37AM EST (link)Obama has now unvailed both the carrot AND the stick in an unethical manner. Perhaps he’s been reading the Cliffs Notes from Krugtard’s old econ 101 lectures….

proudgop (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 11:09AM EST (link)Massa is a liberal and is a darling of them at their recent convention

Mayhem (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 12:59PM EST (link)This was done to Massa to send a message to House freshmen. Massa was made an example. If you freshmen start thinking and acting on your own, this is what will happen to you. Massa was just the casualty this time. Next time, it will be you.
Does anyone think a freshman Democrat will vote no on the Senate bill after this ordeal? I think not. Pelosi is getting exactly what she wanted.
James Madison, Jim DeMint, Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan… You get the picture.
Lose, Lose democrats
izoneguy (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 1:13PM EST (link)Either way they lose.
Vote YES for the POS HealthCare bill and lose.
Vote NO for the POS HealthCare bill and lose.
These idiots have to realize that by voting NO they can sink Pelosi
and perhaps save their pathetic slimy jobs a few more years.
Pelosi cannot do a Massa shuffle on every freshmen. This would only destroy the recruiting efforts of the dems. If I were a dem I would declare as an independent and get out of the way of the falling house of Pelosi.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
A personal question about Massa...
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 4:21PM EST (link)…he says his vote is the swing vote (maybe, but I doubt it) and because he will be gone, America will sink into the abyss.
So, what part of being “forced out” involves a gun to the head, or the wife and kids? Kinda cowardly don’t you think? I can see him sitting on the stern rail on the Titanic, as it’s faced straight down, saying Pelosi and Hoyer caused him to scuttle the ship.
If indeed Health Care passes by one vote…congressman…
Vassar- It's almost 5 PM
Scope (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 4:44PM EST (link)and, the Pelosi and Hoyer story surely has gone national. It will be interesting to see if he rescinds.
The naked shower episode with Emanuel was a little more information than we needed, but, it has added an element of hilarity to the soap opera. You would think with all the money they have stolen from us, they could afford shower curtains. Or, like Rush said, that was probably honoring a request from Bawney Fwank.
There's nothing hilarious about the shower episode...
randy streu (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 5:57PM EST (link)This is thug politics 101. It is all about intimidation. When we’re naked, we’re vulnerable. We don’t expect to be accosted, and we’re immediately on the defensive if something goes amiss. Massa’s telling of this story suggested that this is NOT an unusual thing for Rahm. It is calculated to put the people Rahm is confronting in a vulnerable position in which they feel neither secure nor safe. They don’t have the the surface security afforded by clothing, and he gets in their faces and shouts them down in a situation where they’re most ready to be cowed.
