On the Art of Channeling Kanye West

Senator Arlen Specter and his brash temperament are back in the news.

The incorrigible Republican-turned-Democrat attended a Pennsylvania Progressive forum Saturday, opposite his primary opponent Representative Joe Sestak, where he stormed the stage prematurely during Sestak’s closing remarks.

Explaining why he is best suited both professional and politically for the post, Sestak was unexpectedly greeted by Specter, prompting a moderator to bluntly ask the senator to “get off the stage.”

The forum’s rules were rather strict, holding that each speaker would answer a series of questions while the other was sequestered, according to the blog Pennsylvania Progressive. While the event’s protocol was established at Specter’s request, for whatever reason, he “shredded his own rules,” the blogger wrote.

Two weeks prior, Specter caused a furor on Capitol Hill when he demanded of Congresswoman Michele Bachmann that she “act like a lady” on a joint radio appearance.

Specter’s foes–both Republican and Democratic–are characterizing the episode as his “Kanye West moment,” and further symptomatic of a demeanor unqualified for the United States Senate.

But unlike West, who ungraciously took the floor at the MTV Video Music Award show in September to endorse the efforts of another, Specter’s principle concern is himself. Most damning, though, is that West could give in earnest lessons in civility to the senior Democratic Senator from Pennsylvania.

OK, so I don't know who the blogger is, but it strikes me as odd that he said:

USNJIMRET (Diary) Monday, February 1st at 8:48PM EST (link)

“While the event’s protocol was established at Specter’s request, for whatever reason, he “shredded his own rules,””
The protocol was set by SPecter;s request, then for mysterious reasons unknown, he “shredded” the very rules he established.
Such a simple answer, IMO.
In two parts.
One, he likely as not assumed that because he is already a sitting United States Senator (just imagine/remember Ned Beatty as Senator Meachum in the movie “The Shooter” saying that line.) he would speak first, and didn’t intend to have some upstart steal a second of ‘his’ time.
Second, Rules? Rules? We don’t need no stinkin’ rules!

"Rules", you say?

To the contrary, Specter is precisely following the rules. They are listed in Alinsky’s book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rules_for_Radicals

Michael Dugas (Diary) Monday, February 1st at 8:54PM EST (link)

Here he see’s the meteoric rise of Obama and the Democrats control of both Houses and the POTUS and he’s thinking, “Damn Arlen, You’re gonna miss out on this deal, this bit of history, lemme grab them coat tails!”
Bamn just like that Jekyll becomes Hyde and a new Democrat Senator
bursts forth claiming knowledge and wisdom far beyond that of mortal man!
Shoot ahead too somewhere in the not too distant future. New Jersey
elects a republican Governor, Massachusetts elects a Republican Senator to fill the vacancy left by the passing of Ted Kennedy. Obama couldn’t even get a legitimate “tax cut” passed if he tried. Democrats are beginning to shun association with Obama etc etc
And most of all the party he dumped, fled from and then bad mouthed is making inroads towards a possible huge recovery of fortunes.
Choke on that Arlen. That’s what pandering and self serving err selfish actions get you.

“If the Nation can issue a dollar bond it can issue a dollar bill.
The element that makes the bond good makes the bill good also. The
difference between the bond and the bill is that the bond lets the
money broker collect twice the amount of the bond and an additional 20%.Whereas the currency, the honest sort provided by the Constitution pays nobody but those who contribute in some useful way. It is absurd to say our Country can issue bonds and cannot issue currency. Both are promises to pay, but one fattens the usurer and the other helps the People.” – Thomas A. Edison

So what's the deal with Sestak losing his Vice Admiral rank?

tankertodd (Diary) Monday, February 1st at 9:49PM EST (link)

I read his bio on Wikipedia and he was a Vice Admiral, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, and he got fired by ADM Mullen. Then he retires with too little time in grade so he retires as a two-star (Rear Admiral Upper Half). I don’t think that happens much at all. What did this guy do? Wikipedia refers to a “poor command climate.” What did this guy do? I can’t imagine it was because this guy is so liberal Nancy Pelosi tells him to tone it down.

It's not just Specter

Duke Monday, February 1st at 10:00PM EST (link)

As I watched the clip I was struck by the bravado exhibited by Sen. Specter. He gives me the impression that he is somehow entitled to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants and to whomever he wants. THAT’s what’s wrong with our federal government, and if we don’t put a stop to it we will have what the Soviets had all during the cold war – rulers and commissars that live in dachas, ride around in chauffered limos and jet around the country on our wealth.

We need to radically transform Washington D.C. and we need to do it now!

It’s not about a purge. It’s about an insurrection.

Specter is despicable

wbb1950 Monday, February 1st at 10:25PM EST (link)

Specter is a despicable human being. The only arbitral words in that short sentence are human being. Years ago we had a serious assault and battery case. It was perpetrated by a member of the Pagan motorcycle gang for a fee. The former US Attorney (a Republican) and I met with the Assistant US Attorney (a Democrat) in charge of labor racketeering. The purpose of the meeting was to encourage him to prosecute a key figure in a major union in the Philadelphia are who paid for the job. We had the perp with us when we met with him and he told a convincing and truthful story. Yet they never prosecuted. Our speculation was that Specters influence played a part in that decision. That union was a major contributor to his candidacy and could deliver alot of votes. The other factor is play was the bias of that office. Never before and never since have I seen posters with mug shots of Halderman, Erlichman and Mitchell hanging on the walls of a US Attorneys office. Justice was not blind in their office.

I covered Specter as Philly DA

soljerblue Tuesday, February 2nd at 12:23PM EST (link)

As a radio reporter in Philadelphia in the 60s and 70s, I covered the DA’s office regularly. I came away with two convictions about that beat and Specter. He looked good on convictions because of his excellent staff of ADAs, first among them being Richard Sprague. Sprague was hell-on-wheels in a courtroom, as anyone who ever covered that beat can testify. The second conclusion I reached early on was that Specter always had his finger to the political winds, especially when it came to the Philly PD. He was always quick to drag a cop before a grand jury on the least little hint of police misconduct. His excuse was that, if a grand jury no-billed, or a jury aquitted, the “community” had no further grounds for complaint. Backing the cops wasn’t something he ever did on a regular basis. Quite the opposite, I thought.

I'm betting on dementia in some form or another

RedBeard Tuesday, February 2nd at 4:46AM EST (link)

That’s not a cheap pejorative; it really seems that Specter is not firmly grounded these days, no matter what his politics might be. Something, other than his cheap political opportunism and arrogance, is at work here.

His behavior over the last month seems to suggest that there’s more going on than just Snarlin’ Arlen being himself.

He will be 80 in a couple of weeks, so it is not unreasonable to suspect he’s developed a touch of dementia.

This is NOT sarcastic – he did have a ton of chemo for a cancer a few years ago. I know that stuff eats up the cancer, but also attacks good cells and kills them too. This would include a certain amount of brain cells.

As I watched that clip I really felt uneasy, both for Sestak’s sake and for Specter’s bizzare behavoir.

It’s not about a purge. It’s about an insurrection.

Term limits

darjon38 Tuesday, February 2nd at 3:41PM EST (link)

This old reprobate is just another example of our senile congres-critters and the dire need for term limits, 6 years for senators, 6 – 2yr. terms for representatives or any combination of such that equal twelve years. Thank God we were able to legislate 2 terms for a president after the FDR debacle, and it is long past time for congress-critters.

Nancy Pelosi and Dirty Harry are two more whose feet need to hit the pavement.

The people need to take back our country, vote them out, set term limits, any raises tied to COLA-not the automatic they now get, put them on the same Social Security and medicare that they legislated for “we the people”. Remind them every day, “You work for we the people”.

The automatic raises they get *are* COLA-based
