Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, whose decision not to seek a third term as governor sparked immense speculation among Republicans about a 2012 campaign, announced today he will launch the “Freedom First” PAC in early November, granting him the opportunity to curry favor among the party faithful by raising and transferring sums of money to state and federal Republican candidates.
After launching a website last week describing Pawlenty as “extreme,” the Democratic National Committee today characterized the potential 2012 contender as a “part-time Governor” after news surfaced he was to launch a political action committee.
“Tim Pawlenty is quickly becoming the definition of ‘say one thing and do another’. Today’s news about Pawlenty starting a political action committee is just the latest in a series of broken pledges by the Governor – first breaking his pledge to not raise taxes on the people of Minnesota, and now breaking his pledge to finish his term ‘strong’ as Governor,” said DNC spokesman Hari Sevugan.
“This is just more evidence that Pawlenty is, at best, a part-time Governor who cares more about his national political ambitions than the people of Minnesota,” he said in an email to reporters this afternoon.
While the formation of PACs are indeed a signature of budding presidential campaigns, Democrats have not always been of the opinion they somehow represent a “broken pledge” or a dereliction of duty, as one political advisor close to Pawlenty noted.
Then-Senator Hillary Clinton filed a statement of organization for her leadership PAC, “HILLPAC,” on January 5, 2001, spending eight years as a “part-time” Senator before leaving her post in 2009.
On June 25, 2005, then-Senator Barack Obama announced the formation of “Hope Fund,” whose donations to politicians in key 2008 primary states raised questions of legality on the level of coordination between the PAC and the Obama campaign.
And four days after the official formation of Obama’s “Hope Fund” PAC, then-Senator Joe Biden filed a statement of organization with the FEC for his “Unite our States” PAC, in anticipation of his campaign for president in 2008.
The formation of political action committees is one of many steps in the logical progression of presidential campaigns. If Pawlenty is a “part-time” governor, he will find himself in the company of President Obama, Vice President Biden, and Secretary of State Clinton – all of whom formed PACs years before their terms in the U.S. Senate expired.
UPDATE: The DNC’s “part-time” missive seems particularly ill-advised when one considers the organization’s leadership. Virginia Governor Tim Kaine was installed as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee in early 2009 by President Obama, and has since weathered criticism for his absent governing. Keeping with Sevugan’s twisted logic, Kaine fits the bill of “part-time Governor” quite nicely.

Tim Kaine, VA Governor, head of the DNC
Scope (Diary) Tuesday, September 22nd at 7:15PM EST (link)has been known to everyone in VA as “the part-time Governor.” He has been asked to step aside, as his new duties of the DNC has taken him far and wide across the nation in his “new role.” He now has to report how much time he spends outside of VA, and, how much time he spends inside VA on DNC duties. This is laughable. Is there the first honest person in the Democrat Party? Don’t answer that, I already know the answer. I personally am glad whenever he is gone, that means he can’t do any more damage to the state.
Tim Pawlenty, one to watch for sure (nt)

Don't get too excited about Pawlenty
toni100 (Diary) Tuesday, September 22nd at 7:58PM EST (link)He is not a conservative. Remember he embraced McCain from the get go, he’s big on global warming and all that drivel, he is (or was) big on ethanol mandates and state tax dollars to ethanol plants and he did raise taxes but he called them fees and fines.
Remember Minnesota is a liberal nanny state who elected a Republican Governor. Just as Romney got elected in Massachusetts. It doesn’t happen because they’re conservative!

toni100- I agree
Scope (Diary) Tuesday, September 22nd at 8:23PM EST (link)McCain really wanted Pawlenty as his VP candidate, as I understand. He got “stuck” with Palin, I’m sure to shore up his supposedly “Conservative” credentials. I remember about Pawlenty supporting Global Warming. Pawlenty is doing what the Democrats do best, he is trying to position himself more to the center, or even right of center, which is just another false position with his Presidential hopes. I look at Cantor as McCain on training wheels, Pawlenty has advanced to a Helmet while riding. He is not telling the truth about his “inner policies.”
My post about Kaine, and being a part-time Governor, has nothing to do with any hopefuls.
Heard an interesting theory today. If McCain had “won” the Presidency, being the Globalist. Global Warming supporter, that he is he would have still taken the country in the same direction as Obama, albeit more slowly. The Tea Partiers would have most likely not come out, the Townhalls would not have happened, and, the Conservatives would have been lost for almost ever. I had to agree.
So who then?
SteveLA (Diary) Tuesday, September 22nd at 8:55PM EST (link)toni100
So who then is worth watching, that actually appeals to a broad segment of people, including those pesky I’s and Moderate D’s who might be tired of Obama but by the time the election rolls around but not quite ready to go full tilt conservative?
Hucka?
Mitt?
That’s the two leading contenders for 2012 right now, unless there’s someone else who’s about to spring up, but I don’t see them right now.

ktsub (Diary) Tuesday, September 22nd at 9:08PM EST (link)…I swear, could you stop this so soon. Lets see who the candidates are, the issues, before you start nailing them, that is one thing that bites, is that so many will never be satisfied. Anything to the right of the current idiots are better, and a conservative in a blue state may just be the answer we are looking for. Pawlenty is conservative, have you heard anything he has said? Have you listened to Romney, he is conservative, good LORD he was the Governor of the most liberal state in the nation, do you think he had to governor for the people he represented, yes??? That is why the people get elected to serve their constituants, Pawlenty/Romney had to deal with liberal legislatures, liberal voters, and guess what they got elected and governed as conservative as they could possibly with their state circumstances. Pawlenty will be a great candidate (if he so chooses), he would have been great this past time around too.

Well put

I think Pawlenty has some real potential and I’m certainly going to hear him out along with all the others.

Pawlenty has the appeal of a doormat
AHALgal Wednesday, September 23rd at 1:31AM EST (link)He is so unappealing, the CPAC party named for him was full of politicos and he stood alone in a corner with one guy for over 30 minutes. No interested folks looking for photos ops or autographs.
There’s a reason Pawlenty is always last in the 2012 straw polls, and I argue that it’s his doormat-level appeal.

That's what people said about GW
toni100 (Diary) Tuesday, September 22nd at 10:38PM EST (link)I remember when GW was grabbing everyone’s attention back in ’99/’00. I was one of the lone dissenters among my conservative friends (actually there weren’t too many since I lived in MN then). I actually listened to what GW said, he was pro amnesty for illegal aliens. I commended him for telling us his true views, too many people ignored that side to GW. All I could think of was his father and the ‘no new taxes pledge’. I was never surprised by GW’s big government support and if you support Pawlenty, Romney or Huckabee don’t be surprised by what you get either.
I don’t know who to support but I know it won’t be one of these mentioned. Maybe if Palin gets in I’ll support her but she is also a bit of a populist which translates to big government but I do think she’s more fiscally conservative than the others. Thompson blew his chance and he won’t try again. He’s just too lazy to put in the effort and drive required. I like Fred and was a huge supporter but he’s done. I can never forget Romney’s Massachusetts’ care, what a debacle. Huckabee was pro amnesty before he was against amnesty and don’t forget he was for a total ban on cigarettes – that’s nanny statism.
I have no doubt we will have some squishy Republican foisted us whether we like it or not.

The fact that there is no Republican that excites right now
Scope (Diary) Wednesday, September 23rd at 7:52AM EST (link)it makes me laugh when some say they are willing to give Pawlenty/Huckabee/Romney a “chance.” I see that as desperation. If there was any potential/probable candidate for 2012 that excited many, they would not be getting a high of only 28% Huckabee, and, 12% Romney, Palin, Pawlenty and whoever else was included in the V V starw poll. 28% is not very impressive, and the rest were about as good as the margin of error.
I would think that so many would have learned from 2008, with McCain as the candidate, that to try to appeal to a wide variety of voters is a losing position. Isn’t that the Big Tent theory? You can’t have your cake (principles) and eat it too (appeal to everyone). As to the Independents, which are apparently leaving Obama in droves, according to polling information, why were they for him to begin with? Because he promised “hope” and “change”? Did they close their eyes and ears and just go for what looked like the winner? Did they get caught up in the fancy teleprompter rhetoric? Did they falsely believe that he would govern from the center, even after he told everyone exactly what leftist agenda he had in mind? Has he not accomplished their single issues that they voted for him for? Trouble is, no one knows what is in the minds of “Indeoendents” or why they vote for who they vote for. How about we wait for someone who has some solid principles, that isn’t worried about appealing to the masses, has a good track record of sticking to their principles, who has the welfare of the country at heart, rather than their own political power, and then get behind that person in droves. At this point, I am not willing to give anyone a “chance.” They have to earn my support, and it will need to be someone who “stands for something, no matter where he is standing” rather than “being for something depending on where they are standing.” No, Fred Thompson will not run again, even though he would be the best thing that could happen for this country. I pray for someone like him to appear on the scene.
Fred Thompson proved he's not right for the job
Neil Stevens (Diary) Wednesday, September 23rd at 8:13AM EST (link)You’re wrong on one key point. Principles are not sufficient for being a good candidate. You have to be appealing, too. Appeal is a prerequisite to being a President, just as having the right principles is a prerequisite to being a good President.
Fred Thompson was right on the issues, but he couldn’t get the job done selling himself to even the Republican electorate.
Conservative candidates have to get up and work. Conservatives in general have to get off our chairs and sell the Right Thing to the people. We’re not entitled to anything. Just getting up and blandly saying what we believe in will not excite anyone but activist conservatives, and we alone won’t elect somebody to be dog catcher, let alone President.
So yes, candidates have to earn your support, but you have to earn from the Party its choice of a candidate you prefer, and you have to earn from the country its choice of the best candidate on the ballot.

You are right Neil
Scope (Diary) Wednesday, September 23rd at 8:42AM EST (link)Fred had the right principles and ideas, but, he did come up short on selling himself. No question there. I’m not so sure he really wanted to even run. My point about Fred was that we need someone like him, meaning his principles, ideas, and concern for the country rather than the power it brings. Unfortunately we now have Obama who was able to “appeal” to the voters, but comes up short on everything else. At this time, IMO, there is not one Republican that possesses both, that has made any clear indication that they are seeking the nomination. At this time it is foolish to even contemplate getting behind anyone, as we have no clue what the country is going to look like in 2012. A month is a long time in politics, especially with the current administration.
