NY Lawmakers to CBS: ‘Fire Letterman’

Creepy Dave poked the hornets' nest one time too many.

Republican New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb has written CBS CEO Les Moonves asking the network chief to fire David Letterman for the talk show host’s crude jokes he made at the expense of Governor Sarah Palin and her daughter.

Kolb said his letter condemns Letterman for his “shockingly inappropriate” jokes:

“As the proud father of a daughter, and as a husband, I wanted Mr. Moonves to hear from me directly about Mr. Letterman’s disparaging remarks,” Kolb said in a written statement.

“Firing Mr. Letterman would send a clear message that CBS will not tolerate any of its employees — even an established media figure like Mr. Letterman — making demeaning and degrading comments about women.”

Kolbe joins his colleague Assemblyman Gary Finch, who also sent a letter to Moonvies (this one by personal courier) calling for the creepy comic’s ouster:

“Governor Sarah Palin was a guest of the City of Auburn in New York state,” said Finch. “She was subjected to degrading comments about herself, her 14-year-old daughter, and all women, on primetime television by Late Show host David Letterman. I find these comments to be completely unacceptable and outrageous.”

[...]

“I insist Mr. Moonves fire David Letterman and send a clear message to America that the CBS Network and its affiliates do not find insulting women acceptable.”

The Empire State legislators are not the only ones calling for Letterman’s dismissal. There is a website entirely devoted to that propostition.

Did Creepy Dave poke an angry hornets’ nest with his sexist and demeaning attempts at humor? You betcha!

Update: A “Fire David Letterman” rally is being organized, according to an e-mail reported on FRee Republic. The event is scheduled to take place from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm Monday June 15 outside the Ed Sullivan Theater, located at 1697 Broadway in New York City. The e-mail says that:

“CBS has received so many negative comments about Letterman they have shut down the comments section of their website.”

Well, isn’t that convenient…

You know what they will say at CBS that goverment is tring to stick it nose is private business and i dont think would want them anyway because even it the repup party.they part of the goverment.i would rather see him canned because of rating going south or ad.dollar leaveing that is what all about.CBS still hasnt recieved bailout money. let him dig his own grave by running his big mouth .

Kolb is just using his "bully pulpit" and also, of course, posturing for free

6eorge Jetson (Diary) Friday, June 12th at 11:25PM EST (link)

CBS would be crazy to make any decision based on Kolb’s comments. CBS will view the issue from the sponsorship and ratings lenses. (It would be nice if they would voluntarily consider a minimal standard of decency, but I know that’s too much to ask.)

The president fired the CEO of General Motors. His auto task force is making critical decisions could well determinine whether GM and Chrysler will even have a future. His administration forced Chrysler into a merger with FIAT, an Italian company.

In light of those and other recent intrustions into the private sector by the federal government, the “gov’t is trying to stick its nose into private business” argument won’t get much traction.

As disgusting as I find Letterman's "jokes" it would be less than true to The Constitution

to allow any government representative to call the shots on a free speech issue. It is up to the citizens to exercise their free speech either out loud or by making a different late night entertainment choice if they disapprove. That is the way the America I know operates.

Woodrow Wildon, and FDR had opponents shut down, and jailed in some cases. BJ Clinton used the IRS like a weapon, auditing any Conservative voice he found challenging his administration.

So, while it may be unconstitutional, it happens, even in the America you know.

and someone who works in the media, I am completely opposed to the fairness doctrine and other political measures to stifle free speech, as I am sure most of you are. So for the sake of being consistent I would have to be opposed to a politician getting involved with this issue as well.

But I like to hear that CBS is being flooded with outrage. Besides being offended by his crude remarks and his complete and one-sided sustained attacks on all things conservative, I am outraged as a fan of comedy about just how unfunny the man has actually become. Is it really that hard to come up with one unflattering Obama joke?

Also as a resident of New York State I know for a fact that every single member of our state government is a complete and utter moron, regardless of party.

J. Leg (Diary) Saturday, June 13th at 12:35AM EST (link)

I hated David Letterman’s comments as much as anyone, but as disgusting as his comments were, it should be the free market that gives Letterman his exit, not politicians.

It’s really too bad, because there was a point Letterman was really, really funny. He was funnier than Leno and apolitical, since his heart attack he’s become extremely bitter. It’s a really sad thing to watch actually.

Just gives me another reason to watch Conan, whom I have always liked the best, but now that he’s competing with Letterman, I can support a guy a like while also depriving Dave of my viewership.

could not agree more...

cannedjam (Diary) Saturday, June 13th at 12:41AM EST (link)

I used to be a faithful Dave watcher, but he has become so one- sided and political that I cannot watch his show anymore.

Not to mention he really has no idea what he is talking about half the time and just jumps on the political bandwagon.

Letterman used to be funny...

Mark D Saturday, June 13th at 12:33AM EST (link)

These days, he just seems to be a bitter shell of a human. It started gradually. He would drive unfunny attempts at humor into the ground. Anybody remember when Pataki was elected governor? Dave would incessantly make fun of his name. I was an idiot college student, drunk half the time, but still thought that was juvenile. Now he has nothing for material other than to pander to his largely liberal audience (the show is taped in Manhattan after all) and pick fights with guests such as Bill O’Reilly.
It’s obvious he’s still angry over not getting the Tonight Show gig. Jeez… get over yourself. You’re way more popular and successful than 99% of people in TV. But you can’t accept one thing that didn’t go your way… Sorry if I have a hard time relating, and an even harder time sympathizing.

You know you’ve reached rock bottom when you’re told you have character flaws by a man who hanged his predecessor in a military coup.

That must have been a long time ago because

Letterman WAS really really funny

J. Leg (Diary) Saturday, June 13th at 12:39AM EST (link)

But he’s lost his mojo…. Especially when it comes to making fun of Republicans were he comes over as bitter and angry.

You know who’s really funny now? Conan O’Brien! and guess what? He now hosts “The Tonight Show” which competes directly against “The Late Show”

When you want to watch late night television, watch Tonight.

He had a prime time special, years ago. One segment showed him wandering around New York, just another old curmudgeon.

He was sitting on a park bench, smoking a cigar. A little boy walked by, holding a balloon. Dave reached over and popped it with his cigar. The little boy cried. And the look of evil satisfaction on Dave’s face was something words cannot describe. Here’s a close approximation:

Did he use to be funny or did you grow up?

Karina (Diary) Saturday, June 13th at 4:48AM EST (link)

I don’t think Letterman ever did. He seems to be the epitome of bitter old white guy who wanted to be crowned king of NY but failed. I haven’t watched him in over ten years. He’s just not relevant anymore.

We are already past that point. The rules have changed now. Those in power get to decide the constitution. Where is the outrage from my fellow conservatives?

Heh.

mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, June 13th at 1:09PM EST (link)

Given that this has generated considerable national notice and outrage and would appear to be far from over, vs. the relative lack of outrage over the Dems nationalizing our major industries and being poised to nationalize health care, I say our priorities are firmly screwed into quicksand.

Don’t get me wrong, Letterman is wrong. Palin seems perfectly capable of defending her family without much of my help. I don’t care what happens to him, he’s a marginalized old fart who is going to be celebrated in Leftist circles forever no matter the outcome of this and I doubt most other people give a damn.

This is hardly a national issue or a national crisis. What Obama and the Democrats are doing is. This will go away. What they’re doing won’t.

Relatively speaking, what Letterman did makes absolutely no difference and the stuff we’re ignoring makes all the difference in the world.

It’s something the average unengaged person with a daughter can wrap their mind around, whereas Trillions and Trillions of dollars just causes their eyes to glaze over and their hand to reach for the remote. It’s a teaching moment that the MSM can’t vanish down the memory hole — This is the Kind of People that They Are.

What Letterman does makes no difference, unless it finally convinces Republicans that “This Far, and No Further”. To start fighting back on everything, to not concede a single point. To call the Democrats, and especially the President and his enablers, on every lie and exaggeration. To be more like Laura Ingraham or Ann Coulter and less like the Senate Republican caucus.

have a certain unintentional humor to them. Does anyone think for a moment that were Letterman’s target a prominent Democrat any letters would be necessary?
Right now DL would be sunning himself on a beach some where, sitting out his suspension, or at the least, beginning a lengthy groveling orgy. Or he might even be bounced, a la Imus. Then again CBS might organize a committee to investigate and spend weeks fussing over this, as they did with the lunatic Dan Rather.

Some things can be tolerated, others can’t be countenanced, it all depends on who you wish destroy and besmirch and who you wish to lie about and elevate.

Don Imus???

jennitreadwell Saturday, June 13th at 5:56PM EST (link)

I just sent this to CBS higher-ups:

To Whom It May Concern;

I would just like to point out the hypocrisy in CBS’s firing decisions should David Letterman receive NO punishment concerning his “jokes” about the sexual conduct of a minor. Were the jokes at the expense of African Americans instead of women (read: half of your audience) I think we have seen how swiftly CBS responds. Don Imus was history within a few days of his impromptu, off-color remarks. Mr. Letterman read his jokes from a prepared cue card, and still has offered no apology to American women.

A week has passed and we’re not giving up. We are still fighting on behalf of all women: our daughters, sisters, aunts and mothers who still face discrimination and humiliation for simply being intrinsically female. I have sent boycott letters to each of the Late Show’s sponsors. I hope you hear that women are not to be targeted no matter their age or political affiliation.

black and white

slmiller Sunday, June 14th at 7:26PM EST (link)

Don Imus was fired for insulting a group of young adult black women, to whom he later apologized. Letterman’s target was the fourteen-year old daughter of a white Conservative Republican, and he has yet to offer a formal apology. So, it is apparent that political orientation and racial background would make all the difference in the world, if Letterman would not be dismissed over this incident. Unless of course, the liberal elitists that run CBS are simply another pack of profit-oriented capitalists who care more about lining their pockets than dealing with what is right and what is wrong
