More HuffPo Horse Hockey

In which its diarist knows something that just isn't so.

It’s a Sarah Palin Twofer for Huffington Post today. We have already debunked a distortion made by one of that website’s diarists today.

Now another diarist, Shannyn Moore, who uses her personal blog and a two-hour weekly talk show on an Anchorage radio station mostly to kick Sarah Palin around, has shown that she never lets facts get in the way of a good Palin-bashing. Moore begins her HuffPo diary today with this:

“Writing is hard. I struggle…”

Then she goes on to show that she’s not up to the task. Speculating on Gov. Palin’s recent book deal, Moore cites Alaska law on outside employment, then adds:

“I’m not an attorney, but, after reading the details of the statutes, they seem specific and unambiguous; the governor can’t be paid for other employment.”

No, Moore is no attorney, but had she done some actual research, she would have learned that Alaska’s Department of Law has already looked into the matter and given its opinion, one which blows Moore’s “Law for Dummies” legal interpretation out of the water:

Fairbanks Republican Rep. Jay Ramras has suggested the Alaska Department of Law produce a legal opinion specifically on whether Palin could leave the state for a book tour. The law department has looked into whether the governor having a book contract conflicts with the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Acts, including its prohibition on accepting outside “employment for compensation.”

The department concluded a book contract isn’t employment, because it’s not regular work for a salary or wage. State employees are allowed to provide services for their own financial benefit as long as it’s on their own time, does not conflict with their official duties and does not involve using state equipment or resources, said the legal opinion, signed by deputy attorney general Richard Svobodny.

“A book publication project is compatible with your position as governor so long as it does not interfere with your official duties,” Svobodny wrote to Palin.

Now when I say “research,” I’m not talking about long hours toiling at the library. All Moore had to do was read the Anchorage Daily News report on the book deal, and she would have known a fact which directly contradicts the wishful thinking she put her name to and had published on a nationally-read website.

Ms. Moore, writing isn’t all that hard if the writer does his or her homework, which you failed to do. And that is why you struggle. I worked over 20 years in broadcasting, and I’ve written everything from radio commercials to news copy. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that research – getting your facts straight – is half the battle.

This calls to mind one of my favorite Ronald Reagan quotes. It’s from “A Time for Choosing,” one of the greatest political speeches ever delivered, so great that it came to be known simply as “The Speech“:

“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.”

Diarist, correct thyself.

There is no actual ignorance involved here. As much as I’d like to write off this HuffPo writer as being an idiot, sadly, it’s worse than that. She knows the truth, probably even did the research to which you’re referring. She just doesn’t care. The truth isn’t a “Gotcha.” Her BS, 10-cent legal analysis, however, is. To her, anyway, and anyone gullible enough to buy it.

though Palin is part of the story, her chances in the 2012 election, or the primary, for that matter, is not.

Uh, no, that's what this is all about...

Sarah Palin would be yesterday’s day old bread if not for the fact that the entire left and the MSM are terrified of her because of 2012.

The Republican ticket in 2012 is the only reason why this thread is even here. When Sarah Palin walks into a room everyone notices her. They notice her despite the fact that the entire MSM portrays her as a dunce, etc etc.

2012. I can hardly wait!

The Left isn't terrified of Sarah Palin

they want voters who are not social conservatives to think the Republican right is about as articulate and thoughtful as she was in her embarassing Katie Couric interviews from 2008. They see her as the perfect foil for Obama and want to keep her in the spotlight.

"Embarrassing" Couric interview? Shirely you're joking...

I supposed the reason why the left and MSM goes into conniptions and seizures every time Sarah Palin appears is because they think that no one in America admires her and will crawl across a field of broken glass to see her.

Your reasoning is right up there with the left’s lame attempt to portray Rush Limbaugh as a right wing fringe nut job–you know, Rush Limbaugh is really a failure and his views are only shared by 2000 right wing extremists living in bunkers in Idaho.

Yeah right.

Palin and Limbaugh are the de facto leaders of the Republican Party right now.

de facto leaders of the party?

randy streu (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 7:44AM EST (link)

Look, I like Palin; I do. A little less so because I can’t seem to get away from the constant stream of sycophantic little nuggets about how Glorious she is, but still.

But, I have to ask, other than the occasional fundraising appearance for pro-life group (and, of course, her gaggle of webgroupies), what exactly has she done that sets her up as “de facto leader of the party?”

Leadership has never been defined as “a bunch of people hope she runs for President.”

A leader is...

lonebeagle Thursday, May 14th at 4:55PM EST (link)

Someone who people will follow. Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh have a larger following than any other Republican right now.

Is Steele the party leader? Or Newt? Or [fill in the blank]?

The Republicans just lost an election because a whole bunch of Republicans didn’t even bother to vote.

None of the GOP “leaders” is leading and no one is following them.

Except for Sarah Palin and Rush. I do like Cheney very much but he’s not running for anything.

The “official” Republican Party right now looks rather pathetic.

No... sometimes the person people follow just happens to be first in line.

So according to you, those of us who like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh are just lemmings.

Pathetic

And you sound just like a crying baby.

randy streu (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 6:50PM EST (link)

I asked what Palin has done that makes her such a damned great leader. Your response is that people follow her. My point is that that singular fact does NOT make somebody a leader. It just makes the other people followers.

If you bothered to read the thread, you’ll see that I already said I like Palin — I just don’t see a point in resting the fate of the Republican Party on her shoulders at this stage in the game.

And I like Limbaugh quite a bit, actually.

Here’s a crazy thought, chief — if you’re going to accuse me of something, try reading up and getting some context. Otherwise you’re pissing in the wind.

those are necessary qualifications for the presidency, but they alone do not make one qualified for the office. Greater experience working on national issues, and especially a better familiarity with foreign relations than she has thus-far demonstrated, I consider equally important.

That any number of our presidents came from as limited a background in experience, including our current one, cannot be summoned to refute this point because each would have arguably been a stronger president with the benefit of that experience.

The distance between Obama’s rhetoric on foreign policy and torture during the campaign and his [relatively] more prudent actions now suggest this.

Rush has a 19 percent approval rating

McKinley (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 6:32PM EST (link)

allowing that 90 percent of the country rarely if ever tune into his broadcast, his negatives are incredibly high, especially among independents in the Gallup Poll.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/114163/Limbaugh-Liked-Not-Republicans.aspx

I said he was influential and he is certainly charismatic, but he carries baggage that limit his appeal outside the base, which is revealed by his 24 percent disapproval rating from within the Republican Party. I don’t think Bush in his worst poll ever got a 24 percent disapproval rating from the party.

If Limbaugh’s audience was ideologically diverse or if his numbers were less polarized, I’d concede his impressive audience rendered him an influential voice on mainstream political discourse. He’s not, but this does not suggest any other nonelected official in America exercises anything close to his influence over political debate. Rush is committed to conservatism and really throws his weight around when he attacks his own party on immigration or spending.

Judging from the triumphalism the Left has exuded following the 2006 and 2008 elections, it seems probable that Obama and his surrogates attack Limbaugh, Palin, and Cheney because their polling indicates they are unpopular with moderates and independents, which only confirms their hubris that America is rejecting the social conservatism so closely aligned with Palin, and a lesser extent, Limbaugh.

You may increase your standing greatly in the world.

I imagine those numbers are probably stable.

My argument that Rush Limbaugh has limited appeal outside of the conservative movement and that he exerts the most influence when he opposes a Republican who has to worry about losing his base? Doesn’t seem too controversial to me.

So let me understand your argument. If I say Rush Limbaugh is not influential among anyone but the right, you say I am just mouthing media talking points. When I produce polls from multiple organizations consistently supporting that point, you say the polls must be biased or irrelevant.

You say he has millions of listeners and must therefore be influential. I do not dispute it. This does not mean his listeners come from an ideologically or demographically diverse group. That does not imply he is not influential. On the contrary, he can be very influential when he opposes a moderate Republican or in message discipline for the Republican Party, and especially in attacking the opposition during an election.

Polarizing?

lonebeagle Thursday, May 14th at 7:05PM EST (link)

How do you know that Rush is polarizing? What does “polarizing” mean?

Rush is a conservative. What’s so polarizing about being a conservative?

POLARIZING is a liberal buzzword for CONSERVATIVE. I refuse to use the new doublespeak–there is nothing polarizing about being a conservative.

Why is it that one never hears about “polarizing” in a liberal context?

Anyone with half a brain can point out the flaws in the methodology, the framing of questions, the ordering of questions, the sample size, time of day/year of any poll – just to rattle a few basic ones.

An argument made on the resonance of Limbaugh’s message with groups outside of the conservative base, however, is impossible without reference to the consistently high negative approval ratings he garners. If one concedes polling any salience, then Limbaugh’s consistently high negative ratings cannot be easily dismissed as noise from a few random polls.

Someone, I don’t remember if it was you, asked me to explain why I believed Limbaugh/Palin had a limited appeal. I cited polls showing this. Aside from anecdotes, it is impossible to make any kind of argument without making use of the available snapshots of public opinion polling agencies provide, no matter how imprecise they may be.

Therefore, we are at an impasse as you will refute any claim I can make. That will be that.

I agree with GC that arguments made on Limbaugh’s impact are incomplete with reference to only polls, for the reasons he listed and which I somewhat conceded in an earlier post.

This is tiring....

—”Anyone with half a brain can point out the flaws in the methodology, the framing of questions, the ordering of questions, the sample size, time of day/year of any poll – just to rattle a few basic ones.”—

There’s is no way to evaluate the validitiy, precision or accuracy of a poll since they never let the public see the RAW DATA.

Polling companies keep all of the raw data to themselves because it is proprietary and they don’t want anyone else seeing their methods or results.

So it is impossible to evaluate ANY public opinion poll. Even in science, where the details of the study sample are supposed to be described in great detail, it is difficult if not impossible to see if the researcher cheated.

And people cheat all the time.

You are making the classic mistake by assuming that having some data is better than having no data at all. I’ll let you procede to figure this statement out.

Any poll that indicates almost a third of respondents from the Independent and Democrat side have either never heard of or have no opinion of Rush really defies credulity. Have they been living in caves for the last 20 years? As far as those who did choose to respond, especially on the Democrat side, it would have been quite revealing if the questioners had asked them if they listen to Rush occasionally, often, or not at all, and then broke down those responses between favorable/unfavorable. My gut tells me that Democrats get their sound bites about Rush from their moonbat commentators and leaders, and not from actually listening to him. Rush has no control over that.

When polls start showing some methodology that is “fair and balanced”, I’ll start paying attention.

I was done with this, but since you called me out

McKinley (Diary) Friday, May 15th at 2:02AM EST (link)

I stated Rush Limbaugh is popular among a large group of conservatives, but suggested that his words fail to resonate with a larger public. As an infrequent listener of his show, this claim seems noncontroversial as Rush is ideologically to the right of the center of the political spectrum of this country and when he attracts attention from the press who report his activities to the 90% of voters who do not listen to his program, it usually portrays him in a negative light.

I provided a series of polls to support my claims, only to be told that any arguments supported by polling numbers have no value because I cannot prove a pollster isn’t cooking the numbers. Therefore, despite a series of polls showing remarkably consistent results, my argument is refuted because pollsters might be part of some vast conspiracy to defame Limbaugh.

You have no evidence these numbers are cooked, but I cannot prove beyond the standard Lonebeagle established that they are, so I am not going to waste my time arguing this. I am not sure there is a motive for these pollsters to tamper with their findings, unless you concede pollsters like Gallup and Rasmussen have no professionalism and would sacrifice their integrity and risk their credibility biasing their results over something trivial like this.

I’ll agree with Gamecock that Limbaugh has an immeasurable influence over the conservative wing of the Republican Party and his mesage conributed to its expansion during the 1980s and 1990s.

I never disputed Limbaugh drew an impressive audience or had an incredibly enthusiastic core of supporters. Instead, I maintained he preaches to a large choir, as Martin Knight’s comments below convincingly suggest. I won’t waste time trying to reiterate his points below as his thoughts mirror mine.

Rush Limbaugh draws twenty million weekly listeners, but he is also garners high unfavoribility ratings among Democrats, Independents, and even some Republicans.

Both can be true, and the latter data suggests his message lacks resonance with those outside of the party, thereby limiting his appeal. As Martin Knight suggests, in a different format, things might change.

Cease fire in effect though

EPU: I have to disagree - McKinley's point on Rush is valid.

Martin Knight (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 7:43PM EST (link)

He may have 20 million listeners, 8% of the voting age population and a larger daily audience than ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, etc. combined, but, and this is the problem, these are by and large the same ears tuning in every day.

ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, etc. don’t have this problem. They are watched and listened to by Democrats, Independents, Republicans, Swing Voters, etc.

So while Rush in one week reaches 20 million people (because they’re the same people who keep tuning in every day), the Left’s cohort in the MSM get to reach 60 to 80 million people, even though their daily audience numbers fall below Rush’s on a daily basis.

That’s the reason why Rush has such low approval numbers – far less people listen to him than people who listen to people who hate him talk about him. i.e. Something over a 100 million people voted in 2008. 20 million is 20% of that, which kinda tracks with his 19% approval rating.

This is why I wrote that Rush would do better by stepping out from behind the EIB mike during the entire “I want him to fail” imbroglio and getting himself invited to the Sunday Morning talkshows and other network news programs as an interviewee on all the networks to explain and defend himself, and lay in his attacks where the bulk of America might hear.

That would drive the Left nuts – especially if Rush gets the better of his Inquisitors.

To be honest, I don’t think Obama is (or has even been) threatened by Rush’s influence … so long as Rush continues to confine himself behind the Golden Microphone – because they’ve already written off Rush listeners as an unwinnable demographic.

But Rush sitting across from George Stephanopoulos, Bob Scheiffer, Wolf Blitzer, Larry King or even (I’d say especially) Jon Stewart would be the cause of Night Terrors for Axelrod, Obama, Emmanuel, etc.

I have to say I disagree with most of that

Hard to say

McKinley (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 6:49PM EST (link)

In October 2008, her national approval rating was 46 while disapproval was 51, which represented a drop off from 59 in the aftermath of the convention.

“Perhaps more fundamentally for Palin’s national political future, though, is that voters in the new poll are evenly divided about whether she understands their problems. Three weeks ago, 60 percent said she did; now it is 50 percent yes, 47 percent no.
Both Democratic and independent women are half as likely as they were in late September to see Palin as empathetic. Among independent women, the percentage who view Palin as in tune with people like themselves slipped from 73 to 50 percent.”

Given that first impressions are hard to shake, its hard for me to imagine her reaching out to appealing to anyone outside of the conservative base.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/24/AR2008102402698.html

I googled for more recent polls but found none. If Palin’s numbers have rebounded, I will stand corrected.

There are only a handful of states with solid majorities of Republicans. Our party is so historically unpopular at the moment in terms of voter id that it is not surprising we lack a national leader. Sarah Palin has higher name recognition than other up-and-coming contenders, which makes her one of many contenders for a position of power in 2012. Should she not run, no one’s endorsement would be more valuable, especially for someone like Romney who has to worry about his right flank on social issues.

The Republican base was apparently as equally enthusiastic about Palin as Romney or Huckabee six months ago. Her numbers, of course, are highest among conservatives, though not as impressive among moderate and liberals.

Alaskans seem to be souring on her as well:

Ummmm... no. This diary has nothing whatsoever to do with Palin's running in 2012, except, perhaps, by inference.

randy streu (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 7:40AM EST (link)

Nothing in this post is about Palin running in 2012. It’s about her as Governor of Alaska, her writing a book, and Lefty attempts to turn it into something unethical, even though it clearly isn’t.

We are all working for the future, but for now we need to focus on the facts as they come in. People who want to engage in the mental masturbation involved in Palin campaign fantasies should start their own diaries and stop cluttering the conversation.

Indoctrination vs. Education...

I suspect Ms. Moore embraced the former, and her chosen path came at great sacrifice of the later.

Under those circumstances, writing would likely be extremely difficult for most, because the writer has been handicapped by the very limited vocabulary of the left’s Talking-Point-O-Matic.™

Fairly positive article on Palin today by Friedman, Marketwatch

Titled Sarah Palin Still Befuddles the Media, relates views of AOL politics blogger Henneberger who attended Palin’s recent Indiana appearance. Spoke well of her. Also used the term ‘cultural conservative’ which to me is more accurate and meaningful than ‘social conservative.’ I relate very much to the former term, not at all to the latter. He who controls the language controls the culture.

Her book will be #1 on NY Times list just as

Mark Levin’s book is. They will be helpless though they will try to ignore it, kill it etc.

2010 is excellent timing for the book. She will win re-election handily and be on her way to the Presidency.

Also, I think it will be a great book. Classy, but pulling no punches. A great story about a woman who rose from a very ordinary background through her own talents to become Governor and then VP candidate.

Potential problem

GarWil Thursday, May 14th at 4:41AM EST (link)

I hope this doesn’t happen but it might be a large problem if she ends up NOT running in 2012, or accepting another VP request. You would have a hugely disappointed base that might tend not to bother, especially if the candidate(s) ends up being someone uninspiring like you know who.

Of course I guess that’s why these ankle-biters are trying to do anything they can to take her down and/or discourage/tarnish her before that time.

One would hope for their sanity’s sake that this stuff isn’t purely out of animalistic hatred.

paraphrasing somebody, Seward I think, speaking of Lincoln on his death. Speculation here is that the book deal means she’s not running for re-election as Governor, but rather will be moving exclusively to the National effort. That speculation is reinforced by the fact that she has said she’ll keep the details of the deal confidential until she files her annual Ethics Act income sources report on March 31, 2010, only a couple of months before the filing deadline if she’s seeking re-election.

Interestingly, I have a letter from the Alaska State Ethics Attorney from early in the Palin Administration in which they opine that I will violate the Ethics Act if I use anything I learned in the course of my duties as a state officer in any manner for which I receive compensation – and I had been retired for over six months already, not an active employee. They go on to opine that any application or interpretation of any of the State’s labor agreements or labor policies for compensation will also violate the Act as will disclosure of any information I acquired in the course of my duties if that information has not already been publicly released. So, either they have one opinion for what I can do and another for her, or that’s going to be a really boring book. And somewhere in there she needs to reconcile why she says she’s on duty 24/7 when the issue is collecting per diem while living at home and how she’s going to do all the work on the book on her own time.

In actuality, I thought the Opinion was BS, told them so, gave them about five pages of ethics issues I’d really like to discus in a public forum, and went on with my business ignoring the opinion. They never did anything except huff and puff and threaten both me and my clients with actions under the Ethics Act. So, since I was threatened with Ethics Act charges by the Palin Administration constantly for 18 months of the two years that I was subject to the Act after I retired, I have a lot of trouble feeling much sympathy for her when the Act gets used against her.

that is so child like

mom2oneson (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 9:52AM EST (link)

She is complaining about ethic violations being filed against her and how much it costs her but she is harrassing you with the same thing at the same time. Good for you for standing up for yourself. You are really smart to call out the issue with the book too.

I don't know how much she knew about it,

Achance (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 10:02AM EST (link)

if anything, but certainly two members of her cabinet did as well as a couple of other high-level appointees, so she’s responsible for them.

Didn’t cost me anything but my time since the State usually comes to gunfights with a stick, but it was a hassle.

Hopefully it’s premature to say that of Sarah (with the change of pronoun).

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Boring.....

lonebeagle Thursday, May 14th at 6:59PM EST (link)

I just got a letter from the RNC asking for more money–there was a “Gold” membership card stating that I was someone “special”.

Sarah Palin is the ONLY reason why I donated to the party (and McCain) last year. Arguing about the future while our country is being destroyed by Obama and the Democrats is really pointless.

I’m going to save my money for 2012. The Republican Party doesn’t deserve a dime from me since they don’t seem to believe in anything right now.

I got one too hey you are one of the 3 percent who got one...

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 7:08PM EST (link)

Wow! I thought that only 25 people got one!

lonebeagle Thursday, May 14th at 7:12PM EST (link)

Can’t our party do anything right? How much do they waste on really nice GOLD membership cards?

Heh, I got one, too.
