AP: Obama tax pledge up in smoke

Non-rich people hardest hit

I’m savoring the sweet irony here, because the AP was so tucked away in Obama’s hip pocket during the campaign, dissing Sarah Palin and all. Now their reporter Calvin Woodward files this story:

WASHINGTON – One of President Barack Obama’s campaign pledges on taxes went up in puffs of smoke Wednesday.

The largest increase in tobacco taxes took effect despite Obama’s promise not to raise taxes of any kind on families earning under $250,000 or individuals under $200,000.

This is one tax that disproportionately affects the poor, who are more likely to smoke than the rich.

To be sure, Obama’s tax promises in last year’s campaign were most often made in the context of income taxes. Not always.

“I can make a firm pledge,” he said in Dover, N.H., on Sept. 12. “Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.”

He repeatedly vowed “you will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime.”

Well, technically, the prevaricator-in-chief was right. No tax has increased by only one single dime. But a lot of taxes are increasing by a lot of dollars, and we’re not even to the 100-day mark of the Obamanation.

Oh well. At least it’s “for the children.” Obama’s law raising the tobacco tax to as much as $1.01 a pack is earmarked to finance a major increase in health insurance for kids. But he assured us during the campaign that we could expand affordable health insurance without raising taxes on anyone but the filthy rich. And his published health care plan was purported to be “more than covered” by raising taxes on the wealthy alone. It was not based on raising the tobacco tax.

The White House contends Obama’s campaign pledge left room for measures such as the one financing children’s health insurance. His spin-meisters in the White House are busy splitting semantic hairs to hide the fact The One was less than candid on this issue. But the fact remains that what Obama promised then and what he is doing now are more often than not two different things.

I only wonder if the mainstream media, some of which have suddenly rediscovered the meaning of “journalistic ethics,” thinks it can somehow undo the damage it has done by bending over backwards to help elect such a deceitful charlatan to the highest political office in the land.

I wrote a letter

Deskpilot (Diary) Wednesday, April 1st at 5:48PM EST (link)

to a local small business that I have been supporting for 5 years.
Dear Matt,
It is with deep regret that I must inform you, that as a smoker and a believer in this country, I choose to do the hard thing, and quit smoking.
I refuse to be robbed out of my wallet ANY more that absolutley necessary.
I know that the recent, dramatic uptic in cigarette pricing was beyond your control, you had the threat of the federal government hanging over you for non-compliance.
One good thing about my quitting though, your profits will go down, and with lower profits, the you will pay less in business taxes, even though your tax rates are assured to go up since you’re a small business man.

Now, just because I quit smoking, that does men that I won’t come by and trade some of my hard earned AFTER tax dollars with you on other products you sell. I plan to support every small business I can, I want you to succeed. When you succeed, America succeeds.

See you soon,

nothing wrong with quitting smoking

Doc Holliday (Diary) Wednesday, April 1st at 6:16PM EST (link)

hell, anyone in their right mind would say it is a good thing. Of course this goes as well for quitting drinking, whoring, eating at Taco Bell, and sitting around loafing.

If you quit smoking only because of the federal tax increase, you are far from making Obama’s policies “fail”. think about it.

Come on Doc ! One of the biggest killers is STRESS!

Michael Dugas (Diary) Wednesday, April 1st at 8:47PM EST (link)

Stress is a verifiable murderer….hence the Obama administration is liable to kill thousands with the huge amount of stress he is causing.

But in all my years I have discovered that one of the best stress reducing activities there is is sitting around loafing at Taco Bell !

Along with a couple of shots of pure blue agave tequila and a fine cigar there can be no finer method of stress reduction in all the land !

Well … except maybe tossing out Obama, his entire administration and every member of both Houses and starting over. Now that would be cathartic….Yo Quiero Revolución!

Just kidding – Obviously the Dems via the government and trial lawyers don’t want to ban smoking. Their goal is to maximize dollars taken from smokers.

I got you BK, I know snark

Doc Holliday (Diary) Thursday, April 2nd at 7:59AM EST (link)

btw, I am starting to think there could be an ulterior purpose in this. Maybe Obama want’s to put the for profit tobacco companies out of business so the government can take it over. Just think, a world where ALL the cig profits go to the government, that is a tyrants dream. Look at the Chinese and I think even the Japanese, they own most of their state cig companies.

Molon Labe!

The gubmint's share of cig profits

Vegas_Rick (Diary) Saturday, April 4th at 3:24PM EST (link)

is already so high that it probably wouldn’t be cost effective for them to actually own and operate the companies. It makes much more economic sense to just continue to pillage them.

Marrying Principle and Populism = A Winning Issue

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Wednesday, April 1st at 5:48PM EST (link)

Someone remarked on another thread, that it was be something perceived as small that will ignite the masses against Obama.

As much as wish we could give the populous a crash course on Austrian economics, Alexis DeToqueville or the Federalist Papers, we can’t. That is a project for the generational culture war, not the political front. This is a simple, populist issue that adhres to conservative principle that will have millions of middle class smokers outraged. This is no small hike. Bar rooms and diners across America will be pissed and it is our duty to exploit it and make sure they blame King Barack. This isn’t getting as much press as it should. The GOP should jump on this.

and here is the problem. i am surrounded by libs in the area i live. 2 weeks ago i was at a party and a group of them started complaining about the tax increase. my response was ” hope and change i hope you happy “. about 3 of them wanted to start a fist fight insisting that obama had nothing to do with it. funny. i was then confronted as being a right wing nut job. as i tried to explain madisons stance in federalist article 10 about faction using the tax code to influence or punish the minority, i was promptly told to go screw myself becuase people like me stole this country for the indians!!!!!! you have a long fight on your hands because the people your fighting are stupid.

American culture has turned against smokers

Doc Holliday (Diary) Thursday, April 2nd at 1:52PM EST (link)

to the point they are looked upon lower than most criminals. It is one thing to inform, it is another to lie. Much of the second hand smoke hysteria was outright lies. The funny thing is, as most Americans despise smoking, they own cig companies in their mutual funds, companies that sends billions of cigs abroad.

I believe payroll taxes were the crux of the

candoo2 (dkos funluvn1) (Diary) Wednesday, April 1st at 5:50PM EST (link)

discussion regarding not raising taxes. For those that do not smoke, chew, dip or whatever, I’m guessing their taxes are not going up as a consideration of this sales tax increase.

Often, I have wondered why there is a disconnect between discussing payroll taxes and sales taxes.

You see, payroll taxes are different from sales taxes. Even people that are below the IRS minimum take home pay threshold still pay sales taxes. States the do not have a State Tax (see Washington State, Texas, Florida) have much higher sales taxes to make up for the lack thereof. That includes gasoline taxes, taxes on food and taxes on everything-and-anything else.

Perhaps,

DerKrieger (Diary) Wednesday, April 1st at 6:17PM EST (link)

but his claim was knowingly disingenuous, especially in light of his support for a steep cap and trade tax that would “necessarily cause electricity prices to skyrocket”.

Cap & Trade is akin to a VAT tax because it will be attached to each and every stage of a products lifecycle. And his much ballyhooed “bottom” will be the hardest hit by it.

My suspicion, and fear, is that after he whacks us all with the cap and trade VAT tax he will call for offsetting tax credits for the poor and raise taxes, again, on the rest of us to pay for the credits. So, we get to pay for cap and trade twice. Once for ourselves and once for the poor.

If I were the CEO of a utility I would put a letter in each paper bill describing what cap and trade will mean to them.

Just read Michelle Malkin's piece

DerKrieger (Diary) Wednesday, April 1st at 6:23PM EST (link)

And turns out I was right about a tax credit for the “poor”

“White House budget director Peter Orszag again acknowledged last week that “much of ]the] costs of the plan will be passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices for energy and energy intensive goods.” The GOP puts the cost at approximately $3,100 per family a year. Team Obama promises to offset these costs with some sort of tax credit for families, but by the budget team’s own admission, families would still pay at least $500 per year in out-of-pocket increase energy costs above and beyond the credit. Retirees and college students wouldn’t be eligible for the tax rebates.”

Actually in Texas we make up for it with property taxes

bk (Diary) Thursday, April 2nd at 5:47AM EST (link)

Our sales taxes are in line with many other states but here in the Austin area for example, the property taxes on a $200K house would be in the neighborhood of $5K/year depending mainly on which school district you live in.

of course, it is a bait and switch game

but don’t convince yourself all states are equal. Of course Texas and Virginia are de facto superior, but that is not my point. There have been many studies of OVERALL taxation, counting sales, property, income, etc. There are states that tax less, last I checked Delaware was the best on this; and I might just move there now that Biden is gone lol. BTW, it is no accident that half of US corporations are incorporated in Delaware.

is your opinion based on feelings or fact?

Doc Holliday (Diary) Wednesday, April 1st at 6:22PM EST (link)

It is common knowledge that those lower on the income spectrum are more likely to smoke. Furthermore, people with schizophrenia smoke at levels higher than the Chinese, almost 90 percent. http://www.schizophrenia.com/smokereport.htm So I guess Obama is taxing mental illness too.

I am surprised that you are surprised and even doubtful those who make less money smoke more. Actually the figures are very consistent, you name the negative action, smoking, drinking, obesity, unplanned pregnancy, crime, etc, and yes, statistics show these things drop as you go up the economic ladder. I am not making a moral judgement, just stating the facts. We do still care about facts don’t we?

Have tried before and obviously failed, but this time I regard it as my duty to shiv the ones who want to enlarge gov. at my expense.

Vegas_Rick (Diary) Saturday, April 4th at 3:49PM EST (link)

1. The patch. I couldn’t have done it without the patch.

2. I found that I didn’t feel as desperate if I kept a pack of cigarettes in the house. I was able to throw them away after about three weeks.

3. I, me, myself, and I wanted to quit for me. Not my wife, not to save money or any other external reason. I finally decidied I just didn’t want to smoke anymore.

Best of luck. You can do it Janis!!!!

Well once again you Smart People missed the main point. I am sure that if there was a real, honest, Judge out there, they would find that the punitive taxation policy used to punish American Smokers is no different than the unconstitutional punitive tax policy the Congress used to punish AIG employees they gave the Retention Pay too. Talking about Leadership and Executive experience, it just does not get any better than this. Our first African American President, gave 95% of the American People a tax exemption or a welfare check for $15.00 with one hand, and took back three times that much in punitive taxes with the other. And, you thought Barack, Timmy, were not smart Harvard graduates. The African Americans most affected by these punitive taxes didn’t even notice what he had done to them. The “Poor” darn sure did notice, and they have been blogging all day asking the American People to thank them for taking care of their children’s health care needs, paying their mortgage, and paying their car payments. A thank you is in order I believe. Wake up Smart People!!
