TX GOV: KBH Mocks Perry for Palin endorsement

Bad career move, Senator

Lone Star Times reports that U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s website has posted a copy of a Texarkana Gazette editorial mocking Gov. Rick Perry for having received Sarah Palin’s endorsement:

Palin has a certain cachet among conservatives. … But Lord, have mercy, she is an outsider with an opinion about Texas politics and government. And she sounds like the Yankee she is, if we use the definition that Yankees come from north of the Red River.

If Perry relies too heavily on Palin, he may find himself with a lot of time to watch Russians from her front porch come January 2011.

The Hutchison people erred in putting such a poorly-conceived and ill-informed hit piece on their site. Calling Palin an “outsider” and a “yankee” is just myopic provincialism at best, and the digs at Palin, who is governor of a state which, like Texas, has a strong libertarian streak is risky. Texans and Alaskans both pride themselves on their spirit of rugged individualism, and slamming Palin in a state where conservatives admire and respect her isn’t the smartest of moves for KBH’s proto-campaign for governor to take.

I’m not sure that Hutchison would want to be associated with the remark about Gov. Palin’s front porch, either. She never said that you could see Russia from her house. That was a Tina Fey joke on Saturday Night Live which the left has made into one of its memes, routinely tossed out when attacking the former GOP vice presidential candidate. For the Senator, associating herself with an outright falsehood and – even worse – with leftist anti-Palin memes only serves to drive home the point that KBH isn’t even remotely as conservative as is Gov. Perry. Dallas County, where Sen. Hutchison hails from, may have voted for Obama, but overall Texas is still a solidly red state.

Time will tell, but these tactics on the part of Hutchison’s forces only appear to help Rick Perry. Bad career move, Senator.

Rick Perry is a carefully crafted hairdo nonentity. Sarah Palin will not be a viable candidate for national office again unless she first serves some time as a Senator or congressperson.

KBH will face a tough battle for reelection.

Texas will turn Blue in the next three election cycles.

KBH needs to dial it back

1. What EPU said.

2. KBH isn’t planning to “face a tough battle for reelection”. She’s planning to challenge Perry for the Republican nomination for governor.

3. Texas is more likely to secede than turn blue. KBH, however, is looking a little blue around the gills.

Needs to serve as a Senator or Represenative?

Michael M. Keohane (Diary) Saturday, March 28th at 12:08AM EST (link)

Kyle8 : What do you know that I don’t know? In my humble opinion, Senators and/or Represenatives have not been particulary successfull in running for President. On the other hand, Governors have an excellent record is seeking that office. What Governor Palin needs is another successfull term as governor not some lost time in Congress.

Do not classify the words or deeds of your opponents as being hatefull, malicious or criminal in nature if they can also be easily characterized as simple ignorance or gross stupidity. Anon.

but he’s generally conservative. KBH is looking to retire with a flourish. This will be her last election (one way or the other) and she wants the big fish.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the horses to pull this off, and this anti-Palin stunt won’t help. She may never make it to primary season if she keeps this up.

The amnesty Democrats will have an increasing voice, but you watch, in 2010 Texas will be more red than it was in 2008. The blues may talk louder and make more noise, but the right has the money and the clout in this state.

I said what I did about Palin because

kyle8 (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:55AM EST (link)

she has a vulnerability of appearing insulated and unknowledgable about the world at large.

I said what I did about Texas turning blue because it is true. We have a lot of people living in paradise here failing to see the yearly demographic change, or just ignoring it. Bush, and to a lesser extent Perry got elected by getting all the republican vote, plus a sizable portion of the Hispanic vote by shameless pandering.

All it requires is believable democrat candidate who can pander more to turn that around.

I am sure that in the next two cycles Republicans will do well because there will be a strong reaction against Obama, But long term Texas will go back to being a Democrat State like it used to be.

Sarah Palin

katesmith (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 4:49PM EST (link)

I didn’t realize til well after the election that Governor Palin never said she could see Russia from her house/porch as KBH implies. It was Tina Fey who said that. Governor Palin’s suitability for national office at this point in time stems, among other things, from the fact that she has not been in that slimy bunch of appeasers known as the Senate and congress. Governors are infinitely better bets, in general. Being in the senate didn’t seem to help Mr. McCain. The senator who did win isn’t exactly a gem.

Amen...

azaeroprof (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 4:57PM EST (link)

even IF Gov. Palin is not the GOP candidate in 2012, she should stay AWAY from that DC cesspool. She should take the Reagan path to the WH: do the Guv thing, then write books/columns and give speeches around the country. Build up some political IOU’s, and build a reputation as a serious, learned student of conservatism.

Wow, that was pretty pathetic. I actually liked her and was seriously considering voting for her for governor. Perry’s starting to look like a governor I could like instead of one I have to hold my nose for when voting.

You know who doesn't like Perry?

jimmuy8 (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 5:13PM EST (link)

People who don’t often vote Republican. KBH is running on the McCain model: “Vote for me, the not-evil Republican–I hate Republicans just like you.”

Perry has done a lot of stupid things to be sure. His main flaw is he’s following the GWB model: Let everyone in the media beat on you and lie about you and make fun of you and . . . say nothing. Perry’s leadership is what has let in so much blue into Texas–failing to aggressively attack liberal ideas and advances; while proposing too many feel-good ideas and no aggressively conservative ideas.

One thing Perry has done a great job about is economics. Texas has lead the nation for the last 7 years in exports and we are the number one state in the Union to do business in; he has done a lot to keep it that way.

Also, without Palin on the ticket, Texas would have been way, way closer–I see McCain Palin bumper stickers with the McCain cut off.

The continuance of criticism towards Sarah makes me think they really are concerned about her popularity and her viability as a future candidate for Conservatives. That will not play well with Texas Baptists OR with Texican/Mexican Catholics.

What the dems have done well is getting to the Mexican (and other, but primarily Mexican here) immigrants and selling them a bill of goods. But talk to these people one and one, and you’ll find they share Conservative values.

Family values, anti-abortion, pro-church, hard work, and a fair chance. IMO, they are “natural” republicans, but we have to talk to them one on one and go into their communities, speaking their language.

In my experience, they WANT to assimilate. They want to be loyal and patriotic Americans. They HATE talk of higher taxes and more government spending, but the message is NOT getting to them in the media.

If we find a way to get that message to them, that group of voters will go Red and become a strong new source of growth and ideas for the Republican party.

Texas politics...

ktsub (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 9:19PM EST (link)

…as a conservative Texan, I will say that I prefer Rick Perry’s conservative politics…BUT from all the folks I talk to, at work, in the neighborhood. No one likes Rick Perry, his Toll Road inititative has ticked off the rural voters and his push for inoculation of female children ticked off the other half, lots of issues with Governor’s Manson burning down…..

Everyone refers to him as Governor Good Hair (even conservative voters), this has nothing to do with his politics but his personality. Would he win reelection (yes by 50-55%). Will KBH win in the general election, she would steam-role anyone in her path, yes by 65%+. This makes a huge difference in down the ballot elections.

Is she pitching for the 45% of solid republican voters…yes, but she is going for the 30% of Texas independent voters, that she has a chance to get in the R column in a big redistricting year. KBH is a conservative (check her voting record), and she has the ability to sweep the state (every democrat I know, has voted for her, only because they say “they like her, and trust her” (not the Rick Perry perception).

This is the same Mrs. Hutchison who last week called for the unconsitutional 90% tax on earned income by contact of private citizens at AIG. Mrs. Hutchinson followed up this week to vote in support of funding Barry’s private army of thugs.

My correspondence to her office has encourged her to resign the Senate position, Texas has real Republican’s who can do a better job. There is no way Mrs. Hutchison is Governor material. Again, we have better choices for the future.

She most certainly is not.

Menlo (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 10:34PM EST (link)

She is only conservative if you are a liberal. A voting record will tell no such thing, especially when you compare state to federal legislation.

She gets the votes of Democrats because she sides with them. I’d rather see a Democrat elected governor than her.

This is why we have so many liberal “Republicans” in the state legislature. It has been clear for some time now that most Texas voters, particularly Republicans and conservatives, are clueless when it comes to the people they are electing to office.

I question whether any honest and intelligent conservative or Republican could vote for that woman. I’d rather see the seat go blue. Governors can’t do much here. Then again, neither can our state legislature. Our state house is dominated and controlled by Kay Barely Republicans.

I’m starting to think all this debate about Sarah Palin is a distraction. I’d rather see us focus on the actual policy issues, candidates, and elections we are facing now. It seems here KBH would not.

Texas and turning blue

jessejames Friday, March 27th at 11:17PM EST (link)

Texas will probably never turn completely blue like the People’s Republic of California, but if Texas becomes a minority majority state and the electoral trends of Democratic dominance of Hispanics continue, I can unfortunately see Texas becoming a purple state by 2020 or so.

I'm not crazy about either

jarrod21 Friday, March 27th at 11:54PM EST (link)

I had to think long and hard about voting for Perry his last time up. I was > < that close to voting for Kinky Friedman if his performance in the debates hadn’t been just so awful. I was never going to vote for Strayhorn or Bell.

In the primary, I’ll go for Perry. I’ve never been too happy with KBH as senator, and I’d prefer someone primaries her.

And speaking as a Texan, yeah, we’re way more likely to secede here over the next decade than go blue, especially if the central behemoth keeps overreaching.

Hispanic vote...

ktsub (Diary) Saturday, March 28th at 5:01PM EST (link)

…Texas republicans have competed well in the valley. Republicans have an opportunity to expand and hopefully win this important voting block in Texas at some point before 2020.

But KBH has won this vote or took at large precentage in her past elections. She will be a great Governor, I hope Rick Perry bows out (keep hoping this is a trick to keep him from being considered a lame-duck Governor in this session of legislature). It would be nice if he would consider a run for another office in the future, but this next cycle keep the firepower on the Democrats.

More younger Conservative Governors, please.

wdgf Sunday, March 29th at 12:09AM EST (link)

This election was something of an aberration, with the final choices both from the Senate.

The primary breeding ground of future Presidents, for both parties, seems to be the state Governors. It may be the best office to learn executive skills needed in the Presidency.

IMHO, KBH’s political career is winding down and I’d much rather see conservatives who are moving up gaining experience in the office of Governor.

Build for the future, so to speak.

KBH is the past… at least as far as my vote is concerned. This nonsense demonstrates why.

Much Ado About Nothing

godblesstexas Wednesday, April 1st at 9:09PM EST (link)

This little flap seems to not just be a Texas thing: http://tiny.cc/WBHEH

Considering the recent poll of Republican primary voters that showed KBH ahead of our Governor by 56-31, it appears that this blog thread is more about creating a campaign issue than anything substantive (not to say folks haven’t made some good points). It also shows that the effort to dig up dirt on our Senator wasn’t successful.

We love strong women in Texas, and I was absolutely thrilled when Sen. McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. What a breath of fresh air! But I’m sure Alaskans are a bit like Texans, we don’t like people ‘messin’ with our politics. Of course, elections are about the future and our Senator has got a lot of young, tech-savvy folks behind her campaign.

In any case, the original article was obviously tongue-in-cheek humor, as was the follow-on posting by the campaign. There is a difference between humor and a ‘story.’ This one is much ado about nothing… IMHO.
