Alaska Governor Sarah Palin released a statement today, responding to an e-mail campaign started in September by pro-abortion activists calling for donations to be made to Planned Parenthood on Palin’s behalf. The former GOP vice presidential candidate is a staunch opponent of the grisly practice of abortion.
S.P.E.C.T.E.R.
He did it again. But no Republican should have been surprised. Sen. Arlen Specter has a long history of stabbing his party’s conservatives in the back. Ronald Reagan was one of the first to feel the point of his blade:
At the end of his first term, he voted against the Reagan Administration in two bitter, losing battles: to make William Bradford Reynolds associate attorney general, and Jefferson Sessions III a federal district-court judge. An even more bitter vote came at the beginning of his second term, when Judge Robert Bork was nominated to the Supreme Court. Specter didn’t like Bork’s opinions—”in sharp variance from Justices from Holmes all the way to Chief Justice Rehnquist.” But he also said he didn’t like the possibility that they might not be Bork’s opinions: “Where’s the predictability?” Specter’s announcement that he would vote against Bork marked the end of that battle.
Nicknamed “Snarlin Arlen,” Specter is a tough customer. He has beaten Hodgkin’s lymphoma twice, survived a brain tumor and taken heart bypass surgery in stride. After emerging victorious from such battles, Republican presidents do not intimidate him in the slightest. George W. Bush can testify to this after having fought the Pennsylvania Senator over issues such as Guantanamo and FISA.
Obama’s inexperience painfully obvious
After two weeks on the job our new president’s inexperience is painfully obvious. The words of his political rivals from the primaries and the general election seem almost prophetic in retrospect.
Hillary Clinton, warned on the campaign trail in Knoxville, TN in November of 2007:
“There is one job we can’t afford: on-the-job training for our next president. That could be the costliest job training in history. Every day spent learning the ropes is another day of rising costs, mounting deficits and growing anxiety for our families… It’s easy to make up a program to address every economic problem. But it’s hard to figure out how to pay for it.”
Joe Biden, when he was still a U.S. Senator and challenging Obama for the Democrat presidential nomination in the August, 2007 debate:
Stephanopoulos: “You were asked is he ready. You said ‘I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.’”
Sen. Biden: “I think that I stand by the statement.”
Both of these former rivals have been bought off with high-level jobs in Obama’s administration. There will never be heard a discouraging word about the president from these two again. Well, with Biden’s brain-to-mouth wiring, one can never be sure:
“Mark my words,” the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. “It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.”
She may not be dumb, but her blogging isn’t smart
A recent post on Sarah Palin by U.S. News blogger Bonnie Erbe claims: “Sarah Palin May Not Be Dumb, but She’s Not Smart.” It was written in response to her colleague Robert Schlesinger, whose own Palin post began, “I don’t think Sarah Palin is dumb, but I do wonder how ready to work she is.”
I wonder how ready to work Bonnie Erbe is, because I find her lack of intellectual honesty… disturbing. For example, Erbe claims that she wants to be “fair.” But her contention that Gov. Palin is not smart is shot down by her own colleague Schlesinger, who quotes no less an intellect than economics professor and former McCain policy director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who expressed his opinion that the governor is smart.
Unconfirmed CPAC speakers: Rush and Sarah
Allah is calling it “grassroots Woodstock.” Both Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh have been invited to speak at CPAC09. Their time slots are shown on the schedule of events, but they are listed as “invited” rather than “confirmed” – at least for now. According to Paul Bedard, Joe Scarborough, the lone conservative regular on liberal cable news outlet MSDNC, has been invited to participate in a discussion of the Fairness Doctrine. Gov Palin is scheduled for the prime 4:30 Thursday slot, and Rush is slotted in at 5:00 Friday for the closing address. Oh, and Ron Paul has also been invited to speak.
Is Ashley Judd’s wolf ad about more than wildlife?
Ashley Judd is the narrator of an ad for the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund which portrays Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as a heartless enemy of warm, furry critters. Actually, the ad is not a new one, but simply a refresh of a video which has long been used to attack Gov. Palin:
Defenders of Wildlife launched similar attacks against Palin soon after she was selected as former GOP presidential nominee John McCain’s running mate, but until Judd’s appearance the spots garnered little attention.
The governor has released a statement in which calls the ad campaign “reprehensible and hypocritical.” It is that… and much more.
Voters are not buying the Democrat stimulus plan
Public support for the stimulus plan being kicked around in Congress continues to erode. Results from a new Rasmussen Reports survey released today shows that only 37% of those polled now favor the Democrat’s idea of stimulus, while 43% oppose it and 20% cannot make up their minds.
Just two weeks ago, 45% supported the plan. Last week, 42% favored it.
Even though sixty-four percent (64%) of Democrats still support the plan, that figure is down from the 74% who favored it just a week ago. Only 13% of Republicans and 27% of independents like the stimulus.
Sarah Barracuda takes a bite out of Alaska budget
The Juneau Empire’s blog is reporting that Gov. Sarah Palin sent the Alaska legislature a supplemental budget request today that slashes general fund spending by $268.6 million and asks for authorization to withdraw some funds from the state’s savings accounts to bring the budget into balance by the end of the fiscal year. The governor has already put a state hiring freeze into effect.
Sarah Palin endorses Rick Perry for reelection
The Texas Republican gubernatorial primary race has just gotten more interesting. The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Sarah Palin has endorsed Texas Governor Rick Perry for reelection. According to Wayne Slater, who wrote the Morning News story, Gov. Perry’s campaign is using the Palin endorsement to try to peel away conservative support among women for Sen. Kay Baily Hutchison, Perry’s main opponent in the GOP primary contest.
The Democrats’ Patriotism Deficit
We know for a fact that it is a patriotic act for Americans to pay taxes, especially if one is a rich American. The Vice President of the United States said so when he was campaigning for the office. Not only did Joe Biden make such a remark, but he would later angrily defend his statement after it caused something of a stir, as Biden’s remarks often do. The former Senator told an audience of labor union members that it was about values:
“I tell you, Democrats,” Biden said, gritting his teeth. “Don’t you step down from anybody telling you that we don’t value, we don’t have American values. – I want this debate about values! I want this debate about American values.”
Make no mistake – paying taxes is patriotic. The wealthier you are, the more taxes you should pay. It’s your patriotic duty. Democrats believe that paying taxes should be like voting. It is something to be done early and often. So let it be written. So let it be done.
Palin op-ed makes the case for ANWR drilling
In a StarTibune op-ed published today (also released as a statement by her office last month), Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin makes the case for drilling in ANWR. Here is a brief excerpt:
I AM DISMAYED THAT LEGISLATION HAS AGAIN BEEN INTRODUCED in Congress to prohibit forever oil and gas development in the most promising unexplored petroleum province in North America — the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, in Alaska.
Let’s not forget: Only six months ago, oil was selling for nearly $150 per barrel, while Americans were paying $4 a gallon and more for gasoline. And today, there is potential for prices to rebound as OPEC asserts its market power and as Russia disrupts needed natural gas to Europe for the second time in three years.
As I traveled throughout the country campaigning for vice president, I was glad to hear politicians, including Barack Obama, promise that “everything was on the table” to address America’s great challenges. I also found that when Americans were apprised of the facts, most people became supporters of responsible oil and gas drilling in Alaska. So, I want to remind our national leaders of this promise and make the case against this legislation…
