Wounded Vets Walk Out on Onaugural Ball

Tuesday night marked the latest in a series of missteps with the military for a new president (whose need for on-the-job training is painfully obvious) and/or his supporters:

An inaugural ball honoring U.S. military veterans ended in a kerfluffle as several veterans walked out when a musical act’s attempt at humor backfired.

During the Heroes Red, White & Blue Inaugural Ball honoring the nation’s veterans, a vocalist with George Clinton and the P. Funk All-Stars held up a white towel with large block letters saying “[Expletive] GEORGE,” perturbing many audience members who walked out after the display, interpreting it as a jab at the outgoing commander-in-chief, George W. Bush.

You have to ask “What were they thinking?” when this type of musical act was booked for a formal ball where the attendees would include many who laid their lives on the line for their country:

The audience at the Warner Theater in downtown D.C. included wounded young veterans wearing slings, walking with canes and nursing other visible wounds. Some 300 military service men and women from Walter Reed Hospital and their families were invited. The sweat-pants and bandana sporting members of the funk band were in sharp contrast with the sparkling ball gowns, tuxedos and sharp military uniforms.

The relationship between the rookie president and the nation’s military community began poorly and has gone downhill ever since. While still a candidate for the presidency, Obama cancelled plans to visit soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan at a U.S. military hospital in Germany last July, opting for a workout at a gym instead.

As president-elect on his Hawaii Christmas vacation, Obama made a brief stop at the Kaneche Bay U.S. Marine base, but The One chose to dine at his beach house that night rather than bother to stay at the base long enough to share a meal with the Leathernecks. His reception there was not the stuff of which the fondest scrapbook memories are made.

Just yesterday, the inexperienced president outraged 9/11 families and former military commanders who lost loved ones and brothers in arms to terrorists with his executive draft order to close the detention facility at Guantanimo Bay and halt war crimes trials in progress.

Granted, if you want to be a hit with the troops, a former F-102 driver like George W. Bush is a tough act to follow into the White House. But those who never served in the military have to earn the respect of those who have done so, and such respect is not won by simply paying lip service to those who have worn the uniform.

yeah, our vets "interpreted" that as a jab?

To tell the truth, I expect a little better from the Washington Times.

This little rabble-rousing punk and his band should have never been playing at such a ball, and that little sign was OBVIOUSLY what it was interpreted to be.

a general for insubordination, but in practice it doesn’t work. The military is obligated to assume they should respect the CinC, but if that respect is not confirmed when they extend it, it is entirely valid for them to withdraw it. They are still obligated to follow his orders (unless they violate the Geneva convention or some other Human Rights laws), but that’s it. Respect is a two way street, if the CinC doesn’t respect the military, it won’t respect him. So far the real Obama is most prone to be visible when dealing with the military, which he DOES NOT respect.

I’m a bit disappointed that they all didn’t walk out.

And “several veterans walked out”

To make it simple. The vets who were invited were all from the hospital. If some vets walked out, then “wounded vets walked out of the ball”.

I was having a conversation with a person yesterday, and they were prattling on about all the hope and change in the air, and wasn’t it great. As part of my renewed commitment to confront everyone like this, I told her I thought it was a terrible day for America and that I was definitely not on the Rainbow Bandwagon.

They were stunned that anyone was not only disagreeing, but taking an entirely opposite side. These people firmly believe that everyone hates George Bush and loves Barack Obama, and that their opinions and lack of class speaks for us all.

It is time to put it to an end, and congratulations to the veterans for yet another victory.

Amy Miller (Diary) Thursday, January 22nd at 2:00PM EST (link)

This whole situation is not a question of “taking a jab” or “taking a joke”…it is a question of honor.

It is not HONORABLE to take a jab at a President in front of a room full of veterans. Just because thugs in sweatpants feel the need to curse and insult and hurt doesn’t mean veterans, or anyone for that matter, need to accept it–even when it is done in fits of historical inaugural high spirits.

Was that intelligent enough for you?

They fought precisely because ideas (i.e. points of view) are important. Ideas brought to fruition can bring great beauty and happiness and they are just as capable of bringing destruction and death on a massive scale. The “opposing point of view” expressed by these “artists” is an attack on the very principle of freeing the oppressed. It’s one of George Bush’s greatest achievements. The soldiers understood that and acted accordingly. The mental infants on stage (one even appears to be wearing a diaper) don’t and neither apparently do you.

christophercrowl@gmail.com Thursday, January 22nd at 2:04PM EST (link)

Apparently the gentleman on stage sees the fruition of W.’s ideas differently than the veterans–given the state of things, that’s not unreasonable.

The classy thing would have been not to i)hold up a sign like that in the first place and ii)for the vets to just shrug and say that it wasn’t worth their time to leave the ball. Honestly, disagreement and compromise are the foundation of democracy, and by walking out, those individuals shut the debate down.

For those of you thinking I’m some sort of “troll” or “jerk”–you have no basis for those assertions. How do you know I wasn’t a Ron Paul, John McCain, HRC, supporter? Just because I read this page doesn’t mean that I agree with everything that’s posted here.

jo6pak,

mailloux (Diary) Thursday, January 22nd at 2:16PM EST (link)

Actually, it is unreasonable and infantile. It is a clear example of embracing a belief regardless of facts. The fruition of W’s idea is a free and functioning Iraq. It is a democracy in the middle of the Muslim world. It is a counterbalance to Iran. It is the end of the tyrant Saddam Hussein. It is the death of thousands of terrorists. It is a win for our side and I, for one, am damn proud. And I greatly appreciate the sacrifices of those soldiers. They have made this dangerous world safer for me and my family.

Now, about your statement of shutting down the debate. I find this curious. By walking out, you say they shut down the debate. This is very poor logic. If they did not make such a statement, then there would not have been a debate. There would have only been the one-sided statement from the “artists” on stage.

You wouldn’t understand that as your criteria seems to be that getting wounded is enough to make a warrior hate his Commander in Chief. People like you cannot conceive of the warrior ethos, an ethos that had many, many of these wonderful soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines serve up to 4 times in Iraq and Afghanistan. And many of them volunteered for that kind of duty.

They found that serving under a man such as President Bush gave their service to our country the kind of honor it deserves, the kind of honor that you and your kind cannot conceive of. And you are impoverished for not being able to imagine it.

Emphasis on “had.”  Clinton’s funk bands, Parliament and Funkadelic, had some sort of appeal to me as a younger man who was looking for something with a little more bounce than the average pop song of the late 1970s and early 1980s.  I was a KISS fan at my tender young age, after all.

This little act of poor taste more or less convinced me to avoid getting any of their albums, much as realizing that Jefferson Airplane/Starship members Paul Kantner and Grace Slick were either hardcore Marxists or complete drug-addled lunatics (Slick being both at once) did for most of that band’s catalogue.  “Free speech” or none, there are some lines that I wouldn’t be crossing at this stage for anything.  The vets who walked out did the civil thing; maybe some of them could be dumping their Parliament/Funkadelic CDs and albums at this point in time.

It’s things like this and Obama’s draft executive order (how’s that sound?) that have already set the tone for what his real agenda is going to be.  I await the announcement of a massive terrorist strike on US soil at any time now…

I've noticed something similar about those trolls

JChesney (Diary) Thursday, January 22nd at 8:28PM EST (link)

As I peruse several of my conservative sites, I have noticed something funny about all the trolls that visit them. They ALL seem to ask the same inane questions of every story that gets their goat — “I never saw that, where did you read/hear that?”, “I don’t believe that — show me.” and funniest of all “Prove it.” And, even when bloggers provide them with links, quotes and/or video, they still ask people to prove it.

Once the truth is laid out for them, they then move on to slamming the source — “That publication is a joke”, “I’ve never heard of them” or the fail-safe comment “That guy/gal is a hack.”

Last night I read the story about our annointed one breaking a 56 year tradition of skipping the Medal of Honor Inauguration Ball. Even Bill “Love them Cigars” Clinton paid his respects, but Pres Obamination passed it over in favor of the BET and Recording Artists Balls. Idiot trolls argued throughout the night that they had never heard of such a Ball and the story was a fake despite photos of the last 2 inauguration photos. This Ball has been a tradition since Eisenhower and is sponsored by almost a dozen different military organizations.

I would ask kindly that the trolls on this thread please leave us your address. When we close that “horrible” Gitmo and release those “poor” terrorists, I really would like to send them to your bleeding-heart neighborhood. I bet you will wish you would have been more respectful of the military then you jerks.

It actually does refer to George Clinton

It’s a staple of their shows. I’m not defending the inappropriate context, but they’ve been doing this for a long time. The sign actually does refer to George Clinton, not W. It’s been around since before he was even elected.

Don't care if it is a staple of their shows since

before W was a gleam in his mother/daddy’s eyes, given the context in which the show was occurring, it was completely inappropriate, and those leaving showed more class than the band Obama (or his people, which for this purpose is the same thing) brought in.

Agreed

I thought it was worth mentioning. This event was supposed to be a classy black (or maybe white) tie affair to honor those serving in defense of our country, and it was completely disrespectful and classless.
