maybe we should buy AF1from Kenya. so O's relatives could get jobs and he would not try to ram the Millenium Goals down or throat to "end World Poverty" so he will not feel guilty for not having sent any money to his relatives who live on a $1.00 a day.

I must admit though, the Millenium Goals will end "World Poverty". It is actually quite ingenious. You just destroy the middle class and you have destroyed poverty by eliminating any contrast to the condition. Then O and all his Frechified buds like Kerry will be able rule us with pride at their "Mission Accomplished".

http://science.howstuffworks.com/air-force-one-hybrid.htm
The New look will, like next weeks new president, will take some getting used to.

The paint scheme is said to be even lighter, saving an estimated 350 lbs, which shuld save enough Cooking oil to cook Onion Rings at all D.C. fast food restraunts for a week.

If I were a brilliant engineer, I would try to find a way to turn the top sufaces of the wings into solar panels. Imagine how much less hard the engines would have to work by not turning generators, Ples, it would be free electricity for while a plane is stuck at the gate.

THe cargo bay of this aircraft could easily carry a US made Honda Hybrid for a quick trip around towns. Imagine the possibilities!

I have no idea why the guy needs 28 helicopters at the cost of over 10 billion either. I wonder how much we spend on maintenance and 24x7 security for all those aircraft. I like the C-130 idea.

The issue of hangers and runways was also a point of contention. Boeing asserted that the new tanker needed to be forward based, hence the assertion you make, NOC and others thought that forward basing made no sense. The 20 percent higher weight/fuel carrying capabilities of the KC30 also is a factor on runway length and hanger space. This whole issue space was one of the "unclear" controversies. that will be cleared up in the new RFP.

The Airbus was 160 Millon a copy ver the Boeing at 130 Million, but the AF would be the only ones operating what in effect was a hybrid 767. A case could be made that parts for a tanker based on a commercial jet in wide service would be somewhat cheaper than a custom aircraft so the logistical cost of the life cycle of the tanker would be higher with the Boeing aircraft.

I own a fair chunk of NOC stock by the way.

tankers was runway length and hangar space - - that is there were a bunch of places it couldn't go, runways too short, and the hangars where it could go were too small. These factors offset any savings there may have been per aircraft with hangar remodeling and runway lengthening that would have to be done.

Disclosure: I'm a child of Boeing so I'm very biased (although still po'd that they moved to Chicago) and there are USAF and Air Guard refueling wings stationed where I live, both flying the venerable KC-135.

The new AF 1 will be a government RFP, best value for us the tax payers rules applies. Where the jobs are or are not created is a different issue, and only if the RFP is written in such a way to preclude joint ventures would what any politician thinks matter. Writing an RFP that freezes out NOC, or LockMart partnered with foreign competitors will only end up in court and probably result in a trade war.

By the way, the last Boeing machinist Union strike was over increasing outsourcing overseas large parts of future aircraft like has been done in the Dream Liner. Aircraft manufacturing has become increasingly global.

NOC won the competition fairly, however there was an issue with payload carrying capability that was not clear in the original RFP according to Boeing. The AF agreed that there were issues in the RFP and the completion will be re-run with some aspects of the RFP clarified.

As an aside, the Boeing aircraft also had about 40 percent non US content and was a hybrid of existing Boeing models where the NOC/Airbus KC30 was based off a stardard Airbus A330. The Royal Australia Air force currently is flying a small number of these aircraft.

AgustaWestland in partnership with Lockheed Martin is building the new VH-71, the company is a joint UK and Italian company.

There are serious issues with the new helicopter, mostly to due to the weight of all the systems that are required by the Presidential fleet. The Navy is asking for $218 Million for work on a more advanced version that can carry all the extra gear, the new President will have to make the call on keeping the program going.
