The drive-by media is at it again – Politico, in this instance, fanning the embers of resentment between Governor Sarah Palin and Senator Lisa Murkowski, both of Alaska, and hoping to start a fire. Since Sarah defeated Frank Murkowski, the senator’s father, on her way to the governor’s mansion, there has been some bad blood between Palin and the Murkowski family.
When asked in an interview about the prospect of a potential challenge to Murkowski for her senate seat by Gov. Palin, the senator answered that it would be a tough fight and a risky one for Pain. Now Politico writer Manu Raju has authored an article with the inflammatory headline, “Murkowski to Palin: Leave my seat alone.” Leave it to the drive-bys to try to start a cat fight between Alaska’s two most prominent women in politics, hoping for a battle that would leave both of them bloodied and weakened.
The simple truth is that Sarah Palin doesn’t need a Senate seat if she harbors the presidential ambition that nearly everyone believes she does. Why are the drive-bys pushing the notion that the Senate is the best gateway to the White House? The ’08 election, pitting two senators against each other, was the exception rather than the rule. In the modern political era, a governor’s mansion has been a much more likely path to the presidency.
Raju gives three potential advantages Palin could gain by getting into the Senate:
“…a national platform, and with it the chance to beef up a thin résumé and rebuild damaged credibility on foreign policy and other issues.”
Ah, but Palin already has a national platform. Every time she leaves Alaska to campaign for someone or to attend a meeting, she’s major news. Actually, even when she’s home in Alaska, she’s news.
Her resume is no thinner than that of the president-elect, and hers has the benefit of executive experience that his lacks, or at least will lack until he is coronated next month. The best way for Sarah Palin to build her resume is to continue to be an effective governor and to shepherd that gas pipeline she worked so hard to make possible into the construction phase. Although she has to squeeze her state’s budget now that the price of oil and gas are low, they are commodities which won’t remain cheap for long. She could also take a bold step by getting a test project started on the North Slope to find ways to process some of that bonanza of frozen natural gas that was recently discovered. Sometime around 2010, assuming she gets re-elected, she could make a run for chair of the RGA.
A Senate seat would gain her no foreign policy creds unless she could also finagle a seat on the Foreign Relations or the Intelligence committees, not easily done for a freshman senator. As governor, Palin can travel to Iraq to visit the troops, as she did when she dropped in on her state’s Nation Guard troops deployed in Kuwait. She can travel to some of the nations that are Alaska’s trading partners (Japan, South Korea, and China the top three for her state). It also wouldn’t hurt for her to attend an energy, trade or climate summit in Europe, either.
Gov. Palin can get Fred Thompson to mentor her on national security, intel and foreign policy. His chops in the field are excellent. He was a visiting AEI fellow who studied national security and intelligence (China, North Korea, and Russia). Fred also was Special counsel to both the Senate Intel and FR committees, chair of the State Dept.’s International Security Advisory Board and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. There’s some low-level buzz among the Palinisti that Fred may already be quietly tutoring Sarah on FR and federal gov’t waste (he wrote the book). Jeri Thompson has taken a leading role in Team Sarah, a group of mostly women that’s supporting Palin, and there’s speculation that Jeri has persuaded Fred to help mentor the governor.
Palin’s approval ratings in Alaska have slipped from a high of 80% to about 65% after nine tough weeks as a VP candidate with all of the media and Democrat guns firing at her, not to mention some Republican sniper rifles as well. 65% is still not bad at all for a sitting governor and much higher than that of congress. Why would she want to go to the Senate and see that 65% approval drop into the teens? The Senate is the epitome of a good old boys club, and its not one which Sarah Palin, as a junior senator with no seniority could even begin to reform as she is trying to reform Alaska’s state government.
Like Bobby Jindal in Louisiana, Palin has unfinished business and new challenges in Alaska, some of it as a result of her vice presidential candidacy. In several ways, the two face the same problems, as the Pelican State also has an economy which depends on the fortunes of the energy sector. Low gas and oil prices are forcing both governors to find solutions, none of which will be universally popular ones.
Sarah Palin doesn’t need a Senate seat, at least not until she has served two full terms as governor. If she runs for president in 2012 and loses, then she could challenge Mark Begich for his seat in 2014. Begich would probably be a much easier target than Murkowski, as the Democrat barely managed to defeat an 85-year-old convicted felon in an election year when Republicans had the deck stacked against them.
Lisa Murkowski is right about one thing. A challenge by Palin to Murkowksi for her senate seat would be a risk, and it’s one the governor doesn’t need to take. If Sarah Palin wants to be the leader of the national Republican Party, going to war with the person who is soon to be her state’s only Republican senator is not the best way to go about it. It’s time for Sarah Palin to throw a bucket of water on the media’s bed of coals. A meeting between Alaska’s governor and the woman who will soon be its senior senator, complete with a joint show of Republican solidarity, would be a good exercise in fire prevention and an important step in reconstructing the GOP.

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 2:26PM EST (link)I can’t stand this idea being bantied about. Washington is a cesspool. You have to be a liberal golden child ala Obama not to be tainted.
Sarah Palin “the Washington insider” will not work. The general public does not understand omnibus bills and the legislative process or lobbying. Senators make lousy candidates because voting records and associations are too difficult to explain. Only liberals like Obama can get away with it. No Republican will get the same pass.
The press and Hollywood will use Sarah in the Senate to eat her up daily. She must stay fresh and out of the fray. Her quirky, down home, outsider image is a big part of her appeal.
One senator in a minority party is not going to make a difference anyway especially if Republicans already have the seat. The Dems wont alow her to have one once of success in the Senate. If her name is attached to a Bill they will kill it. They will trivialize and marginalize her.
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible idea. Only if it appears she has no shot at the Presidency and a waning public voice should she jump in the Senate.
not 2010, not 2014
Huan (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 2:50PM EST (link)I agree that her running for senate would substantially harm her prospect for PotUS in 2012. Her appeal is largely based on her connection to most Americans, and most Americans would not ever want to be a DC insider.
Horrible idea for 2010 or 2014.

Bad political strategy 101
blh1976 (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 3:01PM EST (link)This is Lisa Murkowski trying to save her Senate seat from her most formidable potential foe, but her strategy here makes no sense.
Why would she even give Gov. Palin the idea of running against her at this point? It makes her look weak and vulnerable. If Gov. Palin doesn’t take her on, now, for sure, several other strong challengers will. She’s a product of the Alaska political game who only has her seat because her daddy gave it to her. This is cronyism at its apex, and the Honorable Senator knows it’s coming home to roost in a couple of years.
If I were her, I’d make nice with Sarah and try to get her on the team rather than antagonizing the phenom.
But, I guess that’s not what daddy told her to do.
As for Sarah jumping in the Senate, I’d agree it’s probably not her best chance for success later. Her best bet would be to travel the country, raise a lot of money for federal and state candidates, travel the world, strengthen her creds in national and foreign affairs, give speech after speech on what American can and should be, gather a strong inner circle talented enough to project her and her vision to a national audience (i.e. no turkey massacre backdrops) and even write a book on her vision for America.
To run on her own, she’ll need to beef up her bona fides, and now’s the time to start.
I’d offer one other piece of advice – don’t succumb to the necessity of running in 2012 if Obama looks strong or she’s not ready. Better to wait 4 more, continue making Alaska an example for the nation in competent, conservative government, rather than running out of a sense of obligation only to be thoroughly trounced. You’re only 44 – you’ve got time.
Josh- Not even in 2014
Scope (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 3:08PM EST (link)For Palin to ever run for a Senate seat would be the end of Palin for President. She is so very popular right now as she is not a Washington insider. Palin needs to stay in her role as Governor of Alaska, help with conservative campaigns, and continue to keep her approval ratings up in Alaska.
The article just seems to be trying to pick a fight where none exists. Palin would not ever stoop to the level of cat fighting with Murkowski. Palin is already way ahead of the Senator.
She’s had good publicity for her campaigning for Chambliss, and has been in the news. The Liberal Politico and I suspect you will see other MSM’s feel the need to stay on top of Palin bashing. They cannot allow her to gain any more steam, so they just create more and more bizarre stories to try to discredit her. They will never succeed.

The final political act for a lot of Alaskans
Achance (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 3:12PM EST (link)was a show of “Republican Solidarity” with Sarah Palin.
We’ll see; she has a State to run now. It was on autopilot in policy terms and we had money coming out our ears for her first two sessions. Now she has to deal with the essential fact of Alaska politics in tight budget times: somebody getting something means somebody else doesn’t. That’s one thing when there’s lots of money and you can make a “budget restraint” headline and talking point by cutting a few projects in districts that didn’t support you anyway. It’s another thing when you have to tell somebody who supported you that they can’t have something they want. They often don’t take it well.

indym (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 3:23PM EST (link)Well said. Lisa Murkowski is now the senior senator from Alaska and regardless of how she got there Gov Palin will need her support in Washington to get the pipeline and the other items done that she needs. A senate primary battle is the last thing I think the republican party needs right now. Gov Palin and Murkowski could become great allies. She needs to end the speculation now.

youthgrunt (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 3:46PM EST (link)Here in Indiana, we have had a governor (Mitch Daniels) who has managed to balance the budget when that seemed unachievable. The end result is that he was re-elected by 18 points in a state that Obama ended up winning–a massive crossover.
Facing difficult times is actually good for the resume if you face the difficult times in a conservative way and get things done.

WHAT (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 3:52PM EST (link)This is just MSM bull meant to be demeaning to women. Maybe they been watching too much mud wrestling.
I'm going to disagree
EastCoastObserver Tuesday, December 2nd at 3:52PM EST (link)Why? Well, I think that her “outsider” credibility can last even if she is in the Senate, because it has been firmly established. However, something else has been established among moderates and that is she lacks experience on National and International Policy. I also think 2012 would be too soon for Palin.
If she wanted to be serious about running for President and repairing her image among the independents and moderate Republicans she would need to win a majority, she should stay in the governors office until 2014. Focus on that office. Do a lot of good and what have you, but at the same time drawing a little back from the National spotlight, because as much attention it gives her it also, among the groups who think she just isn’t up to the task, brings up her negatives.
So, she should stay as Gov. till 2014. Run for senate in 2016 and run for President in 2020 or 2024. Is that a long way off? Yes, further than 2012, but she can’t win without gaining those who were turned off by her. She gets the national experience and would more than likely keep her “outisder” credibility. Furthermore, she can shed the negativity which would be fresh in 2012. She would have a far better chance in the future, especially if she runs in 2012 against a somewhat if not more than average successful President Obama, she would likely lose and that would be a very hard blow to recover from.
I feel this is the path that would give her the best chance to win. And, if you don’t like the going to the Senate, which creates the threat of her becoming a Washington Insider, she should stay as Gov. through 2014 or 18 (are there term limits?) and try in 2016 or 2020. But, either way, I believe her chances will be greatly increased if waiting and that 2012 would probably give her the least likely chance.
That is just my theory.
maybe
EastCoastObserver Tuesday, December 2nd at 4:11PM EST (link)Maybe she is hearing, among whoever is the political chattering class in Alaska, that Palin is thinking about trying to take her seat from her like she did to her father. You can see the line. Something like Clinton’s, “It took a Clinton to fix the mess of the first Bush and it will take a Clinton to fix the mess of the second.” A good line like that, as most are in politics be them based in fact or not, is usually productive.
Plain needs to play offense
renegade Tuesday, December 2nd at 4:56PM EST (link)It doesn’t matter where Palin decides to go. She has to show that she can throw a punch. Republicans are craving someone who can fire it right back at the libs and the press. If Palin shows she can do that without even trying, she will be a force to be to be recogned with. We know she can take it, now she has to show she can dish it out with a smile.

no no no...
EastCoastObserver Tuesday, December 2nd at 6:46PM EST (link)Yes, she is a conservative and yes moderates and independents will vote for a conservative, but watching the general her favorability ratings with moderates and independents went drastically down, while the same group’s perception of her readiness also went south. Sarah's NOT Running For Senate
Sarracuda Tuesday, December 2nd at 6:57PM EST (link)It’s beneath her, she won’t do it. She will run for re-election in 2010 and win, then, baring what happens to this country, she will run for President. She basically has the GOP nomination in the bag. Sarah doesn’t belong in the senate, the only thing people learn from going to the senate is how to become corrupt. The Senate seat is beneath Sarah, what is Lisa so worried about, she deserves some credit, she got the job the hard way, her daddy gave it to her. Now THAT is what a call earning a living the old fashion way
Palin - the new Reagan
ezagrodzky Tuesday, December 2nd at 7:33PM EST (link)Palin needs to use her celebrity to stake out policcy positions…not to fight the old battles of 2008. The way back for the Republicans is to take a policy position and wait for the electorate to come to them.
Voter turn out in 2008 was much lower than expectation because neither candidate appealed to the true conservative voters. Who are they? Those that work and think the political/economic system uses them… Nearly everybody that depends on W-2 income.
Conservatism and Republicans need to be defined as a Limited Government Party. Right now, no one knows what Republicans and conservatives stand for.

Palin's Best Proof for 2012
DONTREADONME (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 9:16PM EST (link)Will be to help Alaska weather the deep recessions that will surely affect most of the lower 48 states. As we all know, the effects of the recession and struggling economy will generate deep budget deficits due to decreased revenue.
States like VA, that are now blue will experience deep pain through the considerable increase in taxes that are coming as we speak through the counties especially Prince William.
If Sarah Palin can run her state and keep the state’s budget in the black through the desperate period we are about to enter, that will prove to be much more of a political accomplishment than anything that she will ever be able to do in the U.S. Senate. Also in the Senate, she would most likely will be relegated to the corner by the Democrat majority.
As I stated previously, VA has been run now by two so-called “fiscal conservatives” which with the Democrat and RINOs in the VA Legislature and Senate including the big-tax and spenders in NOVA counties will raise taxes considerably as a panacea to cure the budget shortfalls. God forbid they try running on a realistic budget instead of spending everything in sight and being truely a fiscal conservative. If Sarah can contrast herself with the way VA and the federal is currently being run by keeping her state in the black through fiscal responsibility, she may have a considerable edge in the 2012.
Palin 4 Senate
Dencal26 Wednesday, December 3rd at 12:26AM EST (link)Sarah Palins best chance is through Senate for a number of reasons. 1st is exposure which she will not get being in Alaska unless she spends too much time away from current job. Next is the question of national media. She needs to get used them and lastly she needs to learn more. I cannot believe she couldn’t name one USSC decsion she disagreed with other than Roe v Wade. What about the Kelo Case ?
I support Gov Palin whichever route she chooses
sickofitall Wednesday, December 3rd at 12:45PM EST (link)as long as it gets her to the White House in ’12. My gut instinct is that she’d be better served keeping the Governor’s chair for another term and showing the nation exactly how effective a Conservative Executive she really is. However there would be several major advantages to going to Washington. The first is that by having a couple of years of exposure to the MSM up close her obvious intelligence and charisma would show through and they’d no longer be able to cast her in the role of the rube from the provinces. The second is that Senate Republicans need the kind of leadership she can provide in the fight against the Obamessiah’s charge to nationalize and socialize our entire economy. Conservative voters and even moderates who will by that time be completely sick of the Democrat Congress will appreciate it. The third reason why it’s not a bad idea is that the Obamessiah showed us that it’s possible to spend a couple of years in the Senate without leaving any kind of legislative tracks that can trip you up in an election. A long career there makes that unavoidable but if the Senate is used only as a brief stepping stone it can’t hurt.

Doesn't work that way in Alaska.
Achance (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 5:10PM EST (link)Our economy is usually countercyclical to the Lower 48. High oil prices cause slow or recessionary economy down there and a boom here. We also are not much involved in the Lower 48 credit markets; we do our own in the mortgage area and much of our consumer credit is through credit unions rather than commercial banks.
The price of oil is down from the stratospheric heights of a few months ago, but it isn’t likely to stay this low for long; I’m thinking it starts towards a natural $80 -100/bbl. shortly after noon on Jan. 20. In any event, you can run Alaska’s government quite nicely on $50/bbl. oil and we have lots socked away in forward funding and reserves from the high price days.
Her problem will be balancing competing interests because there isn’t enough money and she doesn’t have enough poltical power to just throw money around. She’ll have to say no to some people and interests. There goes that high popularity rating.

Unfortunately...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 5:20PM EST (link)A balancing act between peoples interests is exactly the problem. She just will have to stick to her guns and do the principled thing, if she balances interest for the sake of popularity she might as well be in the Senate and be at home in the beltway about where I live.
Pssst, keep it on the down low about that counter-cyclical revenue thing we do not want the MSM to have more ammo or let the American people know her secrets.
