In a survey of Republicans and political independents who “lean” toward the GOP to determine which prospective candidates they would and would not like to see run for president in 2012, Governor Sarah Palin tops the list of those receiving positive responses. Gallup conducted the poll Nov. 5-16.
Gov. Palin had the highest percentage of “would like to see run” responses at 67% and the lowest percentage of “would not like to see run” responses at 30%.
According to the Gallup poll:
Seventy-three percent of Republicans who describe their political views as “conservative” would like to see Palin run in 2012, significantly more than any other candidate.
69% of liberal and moderate Republicans, on the other hand, favored Romney over the other potential candidates. Among this latter group, Palin (48%) was ranked third, behind Romney (59%) and Rudy Giuliani (50%).
This is the second poll in a row this month in which Palin fared very well among her fellow Republicans. In a Rasmussen poll released November 7, Palin was the top choice among Republican voters (64%) to be the GOP 2012 presidential nominee. 69% of Republican voters in the Rasmussen survey said Palin helped John McCain’s bid for the White House, and only 20% of GOP voters said she hurt the party’s ticket. 91% of Republicans in the Rasmussen study had a favorable view of Palin, opposed to only 8% who have an unfavorable view of her.
It’s always interesting to get feedback about who will be at the top of the pyramid four years out. I’d like to see some poll questions focused on which players in the GOP sandbox will win friends and influence voters in the critical elections of 2010.

Palin is unproven as a conservative
Spiral (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 11:15AM EST (link)Palin has only been Governor of Alaska for less than two years.
For conservatives to hop on the Palin bandwagon at this point, when there could be many better conservative candidates in 2012, would be a mistake.
Let’s also remember that she isn’t the most articulate conservative out there. She stumbled badly when she was asked questions during the campaign.
Basically Sara Palin looked in the 2008 campaign like somoene who was looking for a PTA meeting to attend but accidently found herself in a Council on Foreign Relations meeting.
We need someone who really understands all of the complexities of the issues in 2012. Otherwise we will lose again.
The Obama Bread Lines
Not sure I agree
DL80 Saturday, November 22nd at 11:23AM EST (link)I think Palin was out of her element almost immediately. She was not a national figure and her vetting was extremely short, meaning she likely had very little time to prepare for what was to come.
I’m a liberal. I disagree with Palin on almost every issue. And yet, I think she has the potential to be a very strong candidate for the Republican Party. I think she probably needs to play down the folksiness (instead of playing it up like she did in this campaign), while remaining true to her socially conservative positions. If her economic articulation increases, she’ll be very formidable.
So, I Assume You Only Want..

Jeff Woehrle Saturday, November 22nd at 11:34AM EST (link)No matter who the 2012 Republican pick is, we would do well to remember that Republicans need to run as conservatives, not ‘centrists’ if we wish to win.
McCain was endorsed by the New York Times during the Republican primary. One need only look to that to determine why we were handed a defeat in 2008.
No Way
Kayla Saturday, November 22nd at 11:36AM EST (link)There are other conservatives out there like John Thune, Mark Sanford, DeMint, Bobby Jindal even Newt who can articulate the conservative message. Sorry, but Sarah just has the ditz factor. Say what you want about Hillary, but she can tell you why and what for when it comes to her positions on issues. With Sarah you get “you betcha.”
Apparently, you weren't listening.
NightTwister (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 11:57AM EST (link)To Sarah Palin, that is. Looks more like you were listening to the media and others that tried to paint her as an idiot.
She had a lot to say about her positions on the issues. People were just more concerned about what she was wearing than what she was saying, especially after she was no longer being handled.
Now I’m one that believes she still has more to prove before I’d support her on top of the ticket, but I see no reason why she isn’t still in the game.
The fact that you list Newt tells me you aren’t serious about actually winning. Newt has zero chance of getting elected, and would actually embolden the liberals even more by how willing he has been to support their issues that would destroy this nation, not to mention being chums with people on the left that have eviscerated our leaders uncontested.

Four years between now and 2012
Canthros (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 12:01PM EST (link)I wouldn’t put much faith in any poll about Presidential candidates this far out. Lots can change in one year, and still more can happen in four. By 2012 she won’t be ‘unproven’, whatever else she might be.
In the meantime, there’s really no point in getting worked up, either way, about her chances fours years from now.
This too shall pass.
Four years from now
redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 12:01PM EST (link)will be 4..years..from..now. As to 2008 general election, who could have done more to excite the Republican base than Sarah? Anybody want to lay bets on how the future Couric/Gibson interviews would turn out?
Solid point
KeyWestConservative (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 12:11PM EST (link)You can always differentiate between those who listened to Palin and those who listened to the MSM hype about her. The former know she’s an intelligent woman, the latter think she’s a ditz.
Taking into consideration Obama’s announcement today (Saturday) that he plans on ‘creating 2.5 million jobs’ by aggressively pursuing alternative energy solutions like wind and solar we can fully expect an energy crisis in the coming years. Energy independence will be a primary issue in 2012 and no one, so far, has come close to articulating a clear energy policy that this country needs like Palin.

Kayla Saturday, November 22nd at 12:20PM EST (link)And I saw a woman who was way over her head. She obviously was not ready for this campaign. Did her interview with Katie say “president” to you? Katie asked her some very basic questions a VP candidate should know and she didn’t have a clue. I was not even running for anything, yet I knew some of Katie’s questions like besides Fannie Mae reform what other reform did McCain sponsor (Mccain – Feingold). And what Supreme Court decisions she disagreed with (I don’t know the names involved, but the one in Lousiana which said you could not execute a child rapist, which was a recent case) She did not know any of that. She showed great ignorance in that interview. There are just other messengers much stronger than her. Newt is not my top choice but the man is intelligent and has a great command of the issues, something Sarah does not have.
I agree
jcheney Saturday, November 22nd at 12:21PM EST (link)There is no way to know who will be the best candidate in 2012. Heck, I couldn’t have predicted that McCain would have been the nominee in 2008.
The biggest concern for the time being is who the Republicans will tap for 2010. The next two years could end up being the biggest disaster in history, likely having the Dems blame prior Republicans for it.
The Republicans will need to unite, return to basic conservatism and appeal to voters in a fresh new way. I’m not sure what that is right now; someone much smarter than me will have to come up with that.
I will say, however, that “change” seemed to work this election cycle and something like that will have to be a new mantra.
If the Republican party wants to truly revamp the party then it needs to come up with a candidate ‘like’ Obama. Unknown and surprising. Naming the obvious younger Republicans we know isn’t necessary the answer, but certainly getting the old crusty pseudo-Republicans out is.
Do I like her? You betcha...
johninca Saturday, November 22nd at 12:23PM EST (link)…but my one concern is whether she can overcome the media bias. It was rough enough when she was running for vice-president, but a fortiori it will be worse if she’s first on the ticket.
Like I said, you weren't listening.
NightTwister (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 12:36PM EST (link)I realize Sarah didn’t handle the Couric interview well, but too many people are ready to dismiss here due to that one interview.
Apparently it doesn’t bother you that Couric asked Palin questions she never asked Obama.
Others may have handled the interview better, but no one else would’ve excited the base like she did. McCain lost much worse if not for Palin.
She has time now to solidify her knowledge on the issues before she goes back on the national stage. I’ll wait until then to see if she’s really ready or not.
One more thing. No one has been willing to take on the issue of special needs kids like Sarah. The right has pretty much ignored them. The left would just prefer to abort them. Her willingness to talk about them and say she’d do something tells me where her heart is. She’ll stand up for those that can’t do so for themselves. Liberals want to stand up for those that won’t.

GB221 (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 12:37PM EST (link)There is a big IF buried in the sentence “there could be many better conservatives in 2012″. It is also possible that there could none, especially after vetting the ‘young promising ones’ as mercilessly as Sarah Palin. We know her weaknesses. But unless you prove that those weaknesses are unsurmountable, she should continue to be our first choice. We can’t afford not to support in all possible ways somebody who has the energy, courage and charisma of Sarah Palin.
AMEN
Mark Malcolm (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 12:52PM EST (link)to that. I will no longer support moderates ‘just to win’ or because ‘it’s the lesser of evils’.
I also suspect the MSM will do their level best to destroy Sarah between now and 2012 so she’s no longer as popular.
I for one would jump on that bandwagon right now and begin working for her if I could find a way to apply though.
I may not agree with what you say but I’ll defend your right to say it to the very death.

jbonham76 (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 12:56PM EST (link)Some important information on the polls you quote…
A few points:
The question isn’t who do you favor for 2012 as you present it, it’s actually who would you like to see run, and a respondant could say yes to all or none of the candidates, which produces some interesting logical twists on the findings of this poll- especially in terms of splitting voting segments.
The polarization among the different wings of the party for Palin is pretty astounding:
(from the comment section of the above link)
Total republicans and leaners:
Conservative R’s:
Moderate/Liberal R’s
I guess I am not seeing a huge lead for Palin being the preferred candidate. With a poll that doesn’t really ask the question that you take your conclusions with. Esp. with people having the ability to name as many candidates as wished.
Over all we have a tight race for the 2012 ticket (at least according this poll) and out of three total 2012 polls, Palin leads in only one.
RINOs Need Not Apply
bc3 Saturday, November 22nd at 12:56PM EST (link)We have some very attractive young conservative candidates – Palin, Jindal, Sanford and DeMint.
The two biggest mistakes the GOP can make are to betray conservative values and run another RINO in 2012.
Pawlenty and Crist definitely are RINOs. With regard to Crist, I have nothing against the color of a man’s skin (unless it’s orange). Rudy will be about 70 in 2012. Romney is totally two-faced. The latest proof is that he is against the automotive bailout. I’m not saying that’s wrong. I am just saying, Romney said the government couldn’t do enough to help domestic auto makers when he was running in the Michigan primary a year ago. Like Obama, Romney is an unprincipled man who will say whatever it takes to get elected.
Regarding Palin: she needs to make a comeback after being part of one of the worst-organized (not at all her fault) campaigns in recent history. Unlike Romney, Sarah Palin is a very principled person who walks the talk. She is definitely a force to be reconed with and scares the hell out of RINOs and Democrats alike.

Kayla Saturday, November 22nd at 1:06PM EST (link)You agree that a VP candidate should have been able to answer those basic questions. And I forgot the one about which publications do you read. Yeah she excited the base and McCain would have lost by 10 points if it weren’t for her, but I stick to my point. She does not have a strong command of the issues, not at all. Her persona does not say “President.” But if she is going to run again, I advice her do a LOT studying so she can learn to articulate her views in a coherent way without “you betchas.” And I would also suggest that she hire a first rate staff and advance team so amateur hours things like the French PM prank and the turkey killing don’t happen. She needs to read the Reagan Book of Photo Ops.
Re: Do I like her? You betcha...

Palin might end up being a great conservative Governor.
The key word is might.
Many conservatives have jumped on the Palin bandwagon because the Media was unfair to her.
We have at least two years to take a step back from the media hatchet job they did on Palin and decide if she is really the person who should lead our party in 2012.
The media did a hatchet job on Dan Qualye in 1988 and 1992. But when Quayle ran for President in 2000, conservatives didn’t move lock-step for Quayle’s campaign.

I’ve never done that sort of work as a Republican. Buy the time I switched parties, I was a fairly high level bureaucrat and worked mostly with Party officers and officeholders, and I was prohibed by law from holding party office. I did a lot of the grunt work as a Democrat many years ago, so I still know how!
Frankly, this and a couple of other blogs are pretty much as close to politics as I’ve come since I left the Murkowski Administration in disgust in ’06. Gave Palin the obligatory political appointee level contribution and put up a sign, but that was it.
After the occupation of Alaska by the FBI and the results of this election, I showed up at the District meeting last Thursday. My suburban Juneau district was the ONLY Republican pickup in Alaska.
Now, I’m going to turn my hand to the grunt work, probably at the precinct level first and I’m going to do it the old-fashioned Democrat way; I’m going to work with my new legislator and we’re going to be “fixers.” Got a pothole, give us a call. Having trouble with a permit? Give us a call. Need a job? We’ll help, though there’s not much patronage at the legislative level, you can “help.”
I don’t even want to speculate about who’ll be running for what in 10 or 12, but I’ll guarantee you one thing; they won’t be running without having been thoroughly vetted by the Repubican voters of my precinct and district! I’ve had all I’m going to take of the failures of the largely self-selected leadership cohort of the Republican Party – NO MORE Bob Doles or John McCains!

We will get to whom will run and a look at all the FRESH faces of a NEW Republican Party (tried and true conservatism)….same idea’s in a fresh package by no later than February of 2009.
Sarah Palin has a BIG role to play in this party as I cannot express enough SHE is what the women’s movement was always all about….and she should be front and center showing the success of it….the old bitter bitties from NOW will be made irrelevent because Sarah has done what all of us women do….she CHOSE to run for the PTA than Mayor than Governor all the while having a family to support her OR she could have been a stay at home mom BUT she is proof just as Obama is that the “cultural” wars are ending and being made irrevlent.
WE need to be front and center as a party to show that this country is a country of AMERICAN’s not GROUPS….and the Republican Party stands with AMERICAN’s who DECIDE their fate in life without the victimhood and government interference that liberals apply to themselves and their voter’s.

Scope (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 5:24PM EST (link)For all those that think that 2012 is to far ahead to work for what we need and want in 2012, I really disagree. I’ve heard so many times that the Republicans close up shop and go home right after the elections, win or lose. The Republican headquarters here in the liberal city of Charlottesville is closed up tight, every sign gone, occupied now only by the mice.
Obama gave his first campaign speech at the DNC in 2004. For years before that he organized the community organizers. I would be willing to bet he already started looking out for those to run his campaign (Axelrod, not to hard to find, a Chicago thug) and others of too ill repute to mention, we know them.
If the R party is to have any chance in 2010 and 2012 we have to do that same methodical planning. We don’t have to back any particular candidate at this time, but we must develope a conservative message that resonates. I hope Michael Steele can do that. We need to keep the local offices open and busy. We need to get involved, and bring others with us, as some of you have already done.
If we go to sleep again until it seems to be the right time to get active, we will lose again. Obama and his team are already planning his re-election for 2012. We have no TV media to help, we don’t have many conservative or even republican newspapers to help us. If we lose conservative talk radio (my big fear) and the internet is restricted, we need other ways to communicate our goals, activities and plans for our future. It must start locally, and that involves all of us getting involved from locally on up.

It is not socialism if the state has income from leasing out land or selling resources for consumption. Then it is a business and the stockholders in the state of alaska are the consituents and they should recieve a return.
Giving money to the poor by taxing the rich is income redistribution. No incentive, no product was sold, nothing was produced and nothing was gained in the terms of value, money just switched hands. That is socialism.

kowalski (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 6:46PM EST (link)Let’s just make method planning simple and concrete right now!
Here’s the news!
If Palin, Jindal, Romney, Huckabee or Gingrich are nominated in 2012, I’m voting for them, period. None of them have to convince me. Whichever one makes it makes it — in whatever race they’re trying to run.
Fight it out, peeps.
That’s really how I feel. I’m tired of all the infighting. In fact, I don’t care if it’s not Palin, Jindal, Romney, Huckabee or Gingrich but someone else who people think is better than all of them. I’ll do what Bob Hahn once said about the LTTs and vote however you guys want.
Palin would be great, Jindal would be super, Romney would be fun, Huckabee would be uplifting, and Gingrich would be smart. I don’t care about how the consultants flail each other right now. Go home, consultants!

I'm tired of the constant election campaign
kowalski (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 6:56PM EST (link)And one thing that I would ask, though, is that you just all gave it a rest for a few months at the very least. I know this is what some of you do for a living, but you should really take a vacation.

Scope (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 7:08PM EST (link)Kayla- I know your heart is in the right place, and here’s the but, if she was such a good communicator then why didn’t she win the nomination? You can’t come on as a leader by screeching. And you surely can’t appear as a leader by crying to the cameras. Palin, with all the trash out there about her, her family, what she wore and what she said never had anything but a positive attitude, and a can do spirit, even in the face of the McCain depression.
If you are serious about the fight for conservatism, what are you willing to do to help the party between now and next week?
Sarah Palin
indym (Diary) Saturday, November 22nd at 7:24PM EST (link)I think that Gov Palin went through an incredible election cycle. She had no defenders from the McCain campaign, the republican party and most of the press. She had no defense whatsoever. Also I have seen some the George W. Bush, George H. W. Bush, and yes even Ronald Reagan interviews and some of them were not the best. Also the media favors democrats and I cannot understand why republicans continue to do interviews with the CNNs, MSNBCs, and network news shows. Having said that I think that the elites in both political parties look down on Sarah Palin because she is not like them. She does not have the education, nor does she come from a political family nor is she corruptible. She is a Republican, a christian, a conservation, a wife and a mother and that seems to annoy a number of people. I do think however all repubicans need to practice what in the military is called situational awareness. The camera and the microphone are not your friend. Everything said and done in a public forum will be documented and recorded. The most recent incident with Gov Palin is a good example. Also the other potential candidates have not been vetted yet, trust me its coming.
wow

Isn't it interesting...
rightpatriot Saturday, November 22nd at 9:46PM EST (link)How many comments this post generated?
Palen is a rock star who galvanized our base and inspired people who were not excited about McCain, to get involved. They donated, worked the phones, showed up in record numbers at her rallies – and kept our candidate in the running.
You think Mitt, Bobby or Tim could pull in the millions she did from everyday working people? Do you think any of them would have performed as well with the non stop media onslaught? In nine weeks this unknown became a household name. And it wasn’t because she was a lightweight, dimwit or uneducated bimbo.
A diamond in the rough? Yes she is. The future of our party? You betcha!

Kayla Saturday, November 22nd at 10:13PM EST (link)Hillary didn’t win the nomination because she took it for granted. She thought the primary would be wrapped up by Super Tuesday. And let’s not forget how she foolishly ignored the caucus states. Have you forgotten Pa & OH. Hillary was on fire and she made her case in the debates. By the time she took him seriously and found her message it was too late.
By the way, I have donated to goptrust.com to help Chambliss. What exactly have you done to help the party??????
