I’m one of those who refuses to proclaim Sarah Palin as “the next Reagan.” To do so would be to open myself to all sorts of attacks from Reagan admirers and detractors alike, but that’s not why I refrain from equating the two. I truly believe that Ronald Reagan was a rare and unique leader, a giant of the conservative movement who pushed it ahead as much as did Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley. I do admire and support Gov. Palin, and I think she has her own brand of uniqueness. Rather than cast her as “another” Reagan, I see Palin as one of Reagan’s disciples, as is Fred Thompson. Sarah and Fred both preach the Gipper gospel of fiscal restraint, national security, smaller government and traditional values.
Ronald Reagan’s son Michael, however, is of a different opinion. He showed no such restraint in comparing Palin to his late father. He actually sees her as his dad’s reincarnation, at least in spirit. As someone who knew Ronald Reagan better than anyone, with the singular exception of Nancy Reagan, his opinion cannot be dismissed out of hand. After Governor Palin delivered her acceptance speech to the RNC convention last summer, he wrote this:
Wednesday night I watched the Republican National Convention on television and there, before my very eyes, I saw my Dad reborn; only this time he’s a she.
And what a she!
In one blockbuster of a speech, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin resurrected my Dad’s indomitable spirit and sent it soaring above the convention center, shooting shock waves through the cynical media’s assigned spaces and electrifying the huge audience with the kind of inspiring rhetoric we haven’t heard since my Dad left the scene.
This was Ronald Reagan at his best — the same Ronald Reagan who made the address known now solely as “The Speech,” which during the Goldwater campaign set the tone and the agenda for the rebirth of the traditional conservative movement that later sent him to the White House for eight years and revived the moribund GOP.
That was from Michael’s column dated September 4.
A lot of water has gone under the bridge in the relatively short period of time since that convention speech. A young governor who was scooped up out of Alaska and thrust onto the national stage has taken much more than her fair share of abuse from both ends of the political spectrum, and the middle to boot. She has had her shining moments and some awkward ones. She has been blamed for John McCain’s loss by some and credited with preventing that loss from being a blowout of epic proportions by others. Proponents on both sides of the argument can cite poll numbers to support their claims.
Actually, John McCain’s loss can be directly attributed to the three factors: an unpopular president from McCain’s own political party, a financial crisis finding its flash point just weeks before the election and being outspent by a factor of seven to one. Sarah Palin made no difference between winning or losing for the GOP presidential ticket. She couldn’t have pulled McCain’s chestnuts out of the fire, and neither did she cast them into the flames.
Where Palin made a major difference was with the conservative base. She energized and motivated a core group which has never trusted McCain and was lukewarm to his candidacy at best. She was poorly served by his campaign staff. They put her into situations without properly preparing her for them, and they denied her access for too long to local media and conservative talk show venues. When she pulled larger and more enthusiastic crowds than her running mate, McCain, to his credit, seemed amused by that outcome and quite happy with it. His campaign aides, on the other hand, were outraged. Fearing that it reflected poorly on them, they made sure Sarah Palin paid dearly. They began whispering sweet nothings into the ears of a media so smitten by McCain’s opponent that it was only too happy to spread these rumors and outright lies far and wide. It is to McCain’s discredit that he did nothing to put a stop to it and roll some heads.
Having made new political enemies, Gov. Palin is now back home in Alaska, where she has to deal with the same old ones. The difference is that the national media, which wasn’t that much interested in the political tug of war between Gov. Palin and those in her own state who wanted to take her down before her rise to fame, will now process every little smear and false accusation through its giant megaphone. And those old Palin enemies now have new allies – powerful ones. But don’t count out Sarah Palin. She’s smart, a quick learner and connects with common people. Yet she has uncommon political talent and instincts. She will be back in the national political arena, better prepared and well-versed on national and world issues.
In Michael Reagan’s words:
Like Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin is one of us. She knows how most of us live because that’s the way she lives. She shares our homespun values and our beliefs, and she glories in her status as a small-town woman who put her shoulder to the wheel and made life better for her neighbors.
Her astonishing rise up from the grass-roots, her total lack of self-importance, and her ordinary American values and modest lifestyle reveal her to be the kind of hard-working, optimistic, ordinary American who made this country the greatest, most powerful nation on the face of the earth.
And with that, I have no disagreement.

The reason the media hates her so much is the same reason I love her so much:
She demonstrates, for little girls like my daughter, that she does NOT have to be a militant, pro-abortion feminazi in order to be a strong and independent woman, and that taking her husband’s last name and cooking meals for her family does not make her weak or inferior.

I'm so tired
Anaximander Thursday, November 20th at 12:25PM EST (link)I’m a conservative with Palin fatigue, and I’ve only known her for a couple of months. I’m not sure what kind of conservative she will end up being. [And yes, she is comparable to Obama in the area of inexperience and lack of resume.] She is charming and down to earth. But her whole act has gotten stale quickly(“you betcha,” winking, non-answers to questions, phony anti-elitism, etc…) A lot of conservative pundits seem to be in love with her, but most of my conservative friends are lukewarm at best. Actually, lot’s of regular conservative folks find her completely uninspiring. Heck, most everyday conservatives have a better grasp of the issues than she does – and they know it and find it troubling. She may be a natural television personality, but not a natural politican. And don’t blame the media or McCain. A politican must navigate all that – that’s their job, especially if they are a natural at it! Let’s just stop talking about her, let her develop a second act, and look around at all the other leadership possibilities for party. Continued focus on her will actaully further divide the conservatives. So many conservative commentators seem to be saying – if you don’t like Palin, then you’re an elitist snob. Oh, how I miss Buckley!

Achance (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 1:15PM EST (link)She’s led a charmed life so far. After she bolted the Murkowski Administration, the Left and the Anchorage Daily News made her every Democrat’s favorite Republican because they thought she’d be easy for a Democrat to beat. In ’06, Alaska’s economy was just coming out of two decades of stagnation and Frank Murkowski had committed ritual hari kari. Binkley couldn’t get any traction and she was the nominee. Before I retired, I got all the unions under contract, so they didn’t play much of a part in the ’06 election. As it turned out, The People had had enough of old boys and old ways and much to the Ds’ chagrin, she trounced Knowles.
She’s had two budget years in which we’ve spent money in ways drunken sailors couldn’t imagine. The Permanent Fund Dividend was in the realm of $2K and there was enough extra money to give out $1200 per capita. It’s hard not to be popular in those circumstances!
In about a month she has to have a budget for SFY 10 and oil prices are in the toilet. Life in Alaska is dictated by a simple formula: Revenue equals Price times Production. And policymakers have to understand that we don’t control price nor production and production is inexorably declining. I haven’t looked at the Fall Forcast, but I know they were basing the budget on $83/bbl.
There’s going to be a furball between her OMB and her appointees, many of whom are holdovers with no particular loyalty to her. Then, there’s going to be a budget bloodbath with the Legislature. The two year honeymoon she had with our largely Lefty media ended with the VP nomination. The alliances she could make with Democrats ended with the VP nomination and her newfound National prominence. The remaining Republicans in the Legislature have begun to notice the stench of the dead Republican bodies around them. It’s going to be an interesting couple of years.

The Palin Era
free2fly Thursday, November 20th at 1:43PM EST (link)I like Michael Reagan a lot and actually saw him speak this past weekend. He’s fantastic and a Reagan, which just makes him even better. President Reagan and Palin are obviously very different, but where they came from, their sudden emergence, and their belief and practice of the conservative way are very much the same.
The Sarah Palin Era hasn’t even begun. She’s up in Alaska for the next 2 years where she should study day and night so when she finally does have her moment and her own ticket, she owns it. Whether it be in 2012 or 2016, this woman will be a name at the top of ticket for the conservatives.
If Palin fatigue is going around, then I think you’re watching too much MSNBC. Those who are tired of her are tired because they are seeing the same light shed on her over and over again. Give this woman time and I promise she’ll blow us all away.

Nothing she hadn't heard before
Achance (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 2:26PM EST (link)or shouldn’t have expected. She’s a politician for Christ’s sake! It ain’t like she’s universally loved in political circles here and has never heard a bad word about herself.
And, yes, here she’s led a charmed life, literally a rocket to stardom, but funning thing that rocket trail is marked by the politically dead bodies of the people who put her into play.
Those “old boys” that she likes to brag about taking out made her; she was the darling of the old boys. Frank Murkowski wanted her as his Lt. Gov and when she lost to Loren Leman, gave her one of the biggest patronage plums in State government. Without getting into a lot of detail, lets just say that my recollection of the events that led to her noisy “kiss and tell” departure from the Murkowski Administration is VERY different from the now mytholgized story she has.
As to the investigation, she brought it on herself with the hamfisted way some of her very close associates went after Tpr. Wooten and with using emails and cell phones like a bunch of 9th Grade girls. If she’d just kicked some people to the curb right off the bat, it never would have gotten any traction. And, you know, political people do political investigations for political purposes and they have political outcomes. Memo to file: Don’t take on the Senate President from your own party without expecting some repercussions from doing so.
In any event, now she has to try to actually govern the State, not just throw money at it and she has to do that in an environment very different from the one she left when she accepted the nomination.
I’m a dutiful Republican; I gave her money, still have my McCain Palin sticker on my truck, but I ain’t a member of this Super Sarah Cult. I know her, spent Monday morning staff meetings with her for a couple of years. I have a pretty good idea what she actually does know about the World. As I said, we’ll see where she is in a couple of years.

The challenges lie ahead
Dan McLaughlin (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 2:43PM EST (link)I agree that we’ll see more of what Palin is made of and whether she’s the kind of real deal who can run at the top of the national ticket now that she has to budget for tougher economic times. She’s shown with the half a billion dollars in line item vetoes the first two years that she knows how to fight. She’s indicated in speeches that she understands that the GOP needs to get a handle on spending. The test is whether she can take the next step and take the heat for a lot more budget austerity, knowing that the AK Democrats will be under huge pressure from the national party to thwart her and anyone who gets in her way will be showered with money.
“No compromise with the main purpose, no peace till victory, no pact with unrepentant wrong.” – Winston Churchill
That half-billion was chump change
Achance (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 2:57PM EST (link)in a record-breaking capital budget of, best I recall, over 5 billion. It amazed me that the Democrats never got around to pointing that out. Funny thing too; most of it was strictly on the punish your enemies basis with Southeast Alaska absorbing the brunt of it; SE ain’t Palin Country. Likewise, the other “bridge to nowhere,” the Knik Crossing bridge from ANC to near Wasilla is still alive and absorbing money. It was easy to reject the Ketchikan Bridge because KTN was Murkowski Country. All politics is local!

Apparently you were in a government position of some sort. Could it be that you never rose to the greatness that Palin has and you’re just a wee bit envious?
You seem to be fixated on your fact that she has lost all goodness and light when she became the VP nominee. You said that she will no longer have a honeymoon with the lefty media up there. Seems to me that 2 years is a long long honeymoon, especially with an organization that has nothing more than your demise on their agenda. Of course, one must consider that the Obama wrecking team that ran to AK when she became the nominee would surely continue paying their lefty minions to stay on the attack so that Palin never has a chance of gaining the steam she will still continue to create.
If your posts were half as well written as Palin’s speeches have been, and you were less on the attack and had something positive to say you might begin to inspire others to take to you, as Sarah Palin has accomplished with thousands, and out there in front of thousands to see.

She’s just a politician. I just don’t understand why you are so convinced that she is your kind of conservative – there’s very little to go on. There is evidence that she is liberal on some social issues that may or may not trouble you. Even hints that she may be pro-amnesty. We don’t know that much yet. Palin could be like David Souter
Spiral (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 4:46PM EST (link)Palin hasn’t been governor for very long. So, I have a hard time understanding why conservatives who want to withhold judgement on Palin should be labeled “moderate” or “elitist.”
The original President Bush nominated David Souter to be a US Supreme Court justice.
Souter had a thin paper trail, a lot like Sara Palin. But we were all told to fall into line and support his confirmation. Now we know that Souter can be counted on the Left in terms of Supreme Court decisions. But it’s too late.
That’s why we should take a step back from this whole Palin debate and realize that just because the media is hostile to Palin doesn’t mean that Palin is the next Ronald Reagan or even a conservative.
Conservatives tended to side with Richard Nixon because of Nixon’s enemies. The New York Times hated Nixon, so conservatives figured that Nixon must be on “our side.” We were wrong. Nixon gave us US Supreme Court justice Harry Blackmon, who authored Roe v Wade and Nixon gave us Wage and Price controls, which hurt our economy.
Let’s be careful before we climb on Palin’s bandwagon. I’d love it if she proves herself to be an articulate conservative.
But at this moment, Palin has not proven herself to be either articulate or conservative.

And its not as if Todd was born “working class royalty”. I believe he worked his way up.
One thing that is true about Sarah is she stood up to the fire already. I think it is the other candidates that have “become whatever people want them to be in their minds”. Given the ferocity of the people who are out to destroy here politically as well as the particularly severe economic reversal in Alaska (for the reasons your point out), she will need to demostrate that she can enlist allies and marshall sufficient counterforce.
She certainly made of tough stuff and can handle the personal stuff, but even the world’s greatest samurai swordsman was fatally mismatched against a rifle-equipped sniper.
It may well be that Sarah’s future will be that of a inspirational speaker and revitalizer of conservatism rather than high Federal office.
The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

MaybeNot you are a twit because
Vegas_Rick (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 5:13PM EST (link)you write baseless claims like:
“There is evidence that she is liberal on some social issues…”
Where is that evidence? Hmmm?
and,
“Even hints that she may be pro-amnesty…”
Care to share them with us? If not, don’t make claims and statements you can’t support.
Sarah Palin may, or may not, be the solution to all problems Republican. But her statements and actions thus far have proven to be motivational to most of the party base.
I am always suspicious of people who say things like, “None of the conservatives I know are…” Do you put Kathleen Parker in that group?
“God is great, beer is good and people are crazy.”- Billy Currington
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge.

That woman
Scope (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 6:48PM EST (link)You just absolutely have proven to all of us here that you do in fact have a problem with either, a successful woman, a rock star or just plain envy. I have to believe that you headed the Obama wrecking team in your hopes that she would be taken down. How much of what you have said here or to the Obama media team is really true. With one little comment, on the fly I assume, you have just proven yourself unqualified to have any credibility.
Palin will in fact prove that she is or she is not, but, there is no question now that you are on a vendetta against her. Like I said, how much is Obama or ACORN paying you in your supposed retirement.
Hi, Scope. Don't do that again.

Hey, Scope, you idiot!
Achance (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 7:06PM EST (link)You’ve been here a couple of months. I’ve been here a very long time and am well known to the regulars here. My positions on Gov. Palin are pretty well known going all the way back to the gubernatorial debates in Alaska in ’06.
I don’t know who or what you are, but I’ve held public office as a Republican; my credentials on that account are pretty well known.
You are a cultist. You’re in love with someone you know nothing about beyond a spun image. I assure you that IF I chose to attack her, the attack would be far more effective than anything a bunch of East Coast lawyers and reporters might come up with.

Hey Scope...
mbecker908 (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 7:18PM EST (link)I’d comment further, but you’re not worth the effort. Happy Bunny conveys my sentiments (and I’m pretty sure the sentiment of most of the other regulars here at RS) quite effectively…

Scope (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 8:52PM EST (link)It’s Ok to be told to run along and die now, and I’m too dumb to respond to is OK. It’s OK to say “for CHRIST”S sake, which I personally find very offensive, and to be told that I am an idiot is OK. There were many posts above mine that called a poster a “Twit”. That’s OK.
I still don’t know what I said that was so terrible or beyond acceptable.
To be told to “run along and die now” is more than anyone should have to bear! That is beyond reasonable.
Scope...
Attack Mode (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 9:07PM EST (link)You accused a long time poster and Republican of being a sexist and an operative for the Democrats and ACORN without providing any evidence. Achance, although I personally disagree with his assessment, have a large base of knowledge on Alaska politics and Sarah Palin, so despite disagreements on Palin’s future in the party we tend to be respectful of his positions when we disagree. In other words, you shouldn’t make baseless claims.

Scope (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 9:54PM EST (link)It still does not negate the posts that I should die, I am an idiot, I am dumb and what I have to say is if no consequence. Many post with names that are not their own. I post with my name, first initial last name. I am S. Cope. I personally believe that if you have some facts, insight and the like you should be willing to use your own name. So many here post with made up posting names, and there is no way to verify if what they are saying is true, factual or just their own personal opinion. Are the long time posters given more clout than anyone that may have other opinions than those who are simply long time posters?

As the spouse of a para-pro (teachers aide), I know how poorly they are paid (my wife makes $17k a year as she is paid only for the months she works). I doubt it’s much different in Alaska.
Having seen photos of her parents house, it hardly appears like her parents “hit the lottery.”
Sounds like you have some personal problems with Governor Palin that beyond her performance as governor or her future in the party.

Change the Channel
bc3 Thursday, November 20th at 10:15PM EST (link)If you are suffering from “Palin fatigue,” you can always change the channel. It’s a free country (at least until Obama takes control).
You knew this was a Palin post and you chose to come aboard. No one forced you to join it.
Sarah Palin endured a media firestorm for two reasons (in my opinion) 1: the media would do anything to elect Obama and 2: I believe they fear the potential this woman has.
I’ll readily admit, I am pro-Palin. Sarah Palin earned my respect by the way she worked tirelessly, energized the conservative base and endured an unbelievable onslaught with minimal opportunity to prepare and horid support.
If “Palin fatigue” is that much of a problem, don’t let the door ….

Attack Mode (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 10:23PM EST (link)because they have a history in this community and have proven themselves over the years. I am a relatively new poster here…just over nine months. I think I have gained some respect because I have challenged people on their motives only their positions, trolls not withstanding. Additionally I read the posting rules and followed the advice of the long time posters. If fluffy bunnies urging you to “run along and die” are able to pierce your ego than you may not be cut out for this. I hope that is not the case because you seem like you have potential to be a good contributor.
My suggestion to you is that you apologize to Achance for making a baseless claim in regards to his character. Second I would urge you to follow Moe’s advice when he gives it, if you feel the need to address something further with him use the contact link at the bottom of the page.
Additionally, even though you use your first initial and your last name doesn’t really mean that you are posting in your own name. Mbecker could be doing the same thing as you, as well Achance and JSobieski and Kowalski.
One last piece of advice, get to know the community, lay back a while and get a feel. Go back in the archives and read some of the diaries these guys have written. You may just find out that you have a lot in common and a lot to learn from them.
Aaron

bc3 Thursday, November 20th at 10:25PM EST (link)Apparently you believe whatever MSM tells you (including her thin resume). Next, you’ll be saying she hasn’t sufficiently proven she’s pro-life.
At the recent GOP Governors Conference, Palin along with Jindal and Sanford urging the party to adhere to traditional conservative values against the RINO wing (Pawlenty and Crist) that wants to throw conservative principles under the bus for the sake of their political futures.
Stop spending so much time watching MSNBC. It’s not good for you!

Trillion is the new billion
finaljeopardy Friday, November 21st at 12:57AM EST (link)The way Congress spends money these days, I find it impressive when a politician, even in a state where oil is everything and high gas prices mean everyone lives well, can balance a budget and have a little socked away for the future. Sarah Palin will have to run a lean government this term, but I look forward to seeing handle the challenge – I think she is suited to it.
Of course, all politicians sell a narrative about themselves. Obama wrote two memoirs before he’d really done anything. Palin has an interesting temperament that means she could be a presidential contender. She has a toughness and graciousness that help her.
Two things make interesting:
She shows classic conservative principles where the emphasis seems to be on limited government and fiscal responsibility, but she lives by her social conservative code without imposing it on others.
She is a woman who is an inspirational to women who would not typically consider themselves “feminists” meaning urbane and pro-choice (as well as Democratic.)
It really helps to have
