Here is some old commentary on the outcome of the 2008 statewide elections in Texas. I find it interesting because now two of the three elected officials discussed are now contemplating a run for another statewide office. Texas Supreme Court Justice Dale Wainwright is “strongly considering” a run for the Texas Attorney General. Texas Railroad Commissioner Micheal Williams is one of many declared candidates for Senator Hutchinson’s Senate seat if and when she resigns to focus solely on running for Governor of Texas.
One would think that a “progressive” state like Massachusetts or California would be electing and appointing minorities to statewide office by all of the noise you hear from them about being the “party of diversity.” But actions speak louder than words and Texas, not California or Massachusetts is the only state that currently has three African Americans serving in elected statewide office. The Texas Republican Party is truly the party of diversity in Texas and sets the standard for the rest of the country.
On Tuesday November 4th, 2008 the people of Texas reelected three African-Americans to statewide public office, Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson, Texas Supreme Court Justice Dale Wainwright, and Railroad Chairman Michael Williams.

And in the "racist" South no less...
J. Leg (Diary) Monday, September 7th at 1:09PM EST (link)Yes, you Texans are some southern racists having elected three Republican African American officials state wide…
Notice how liberals assume blacks and Latinos need hand outs to make it in life? Who’re the real racists?
Mr McClellan a couple of notes...
mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, September 7th at 1:12PM EST (link)“The Right Side of Austin” is obviously a Texas blog focused on TX issues from a conservative perspective. (I’m basing that only on the title.)
I represent a very small slice of Redstate. That would be me. I know who Michael Williams is, pretty much where he’s coming from and he’ll be a great replacement for KBH. Those other guys? Never heard of them. Don’t know anything about the electoral process in TX for SCoTx and I have no way to judge whether anything about them is a big deal. I went to your TRSoA linked story and I still don’t know much more than when I started out.
Please note, I’m not disagreeing with you, nor am I whining about your first diary here. Welcome to Redstate. You’ve probably got a lot to offer here. But, and this is my only point, Redstate readers are not Texans. OK some of us are, but for those of us who aren’t, when you talk about people who are pretty much unknowns outside of TX or “inside Austin” stuff, add some detail and background please for the ignorant amongst us (me).
Thanks.

scarlos (Diary) Monday, September 7th at 4:04PM EST (link)Blacks form about 10% of Texas’s population, If I remember correctly, That means Texas is the only state where they are of above average representation statewide (as I assume Texas has less than 30 statewide elected offices).
Socialism is Oligarchy in disguise
Texas statewide elections...
ktsub (Diary) Monday, September 7th at 9:52PM EST (link)…Texas Railroad Commissioner, Chief Justice-Tx Supreme Court and Justice-Tx Supreme Court are all elected in PARTISAN statewide elections.
They have to run campaigns just like US Senator, Governor, etc…go thru partisan primarys and partisan General Elections, so yes its a big deal to have these wonderful gentleman in office.
Yep and only positions like SoS is not elected
Richard Mullins (Diary) Monday, September 7th at 10:08PM EST (link)They have to run for office every 4 years. The Dems last year didn’t even have a black candidate for statewide office in 2008(almost all white except for one latino for Texas Supreme court).
