Democrat-Run Office of Government Ethics Clears Betsy DeVos

The Democrats on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee have done everything they can to fight the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education. They have raised questions about her financial entanglements, as well as her education qualifications, and they have attacked her while simultaneously taking huge donations from teachers unions.

DeVos has worked closely with education officials to bring about reform. She has been endorsed by the Chicago Tribune, and by numerous Republicans and Democrats. Yet, the Democrats on the HELP Committee still fight. They have gone so far as to delay her vote to the end of the month. One of their claimed reasons are her potential financial entanglements.

However, the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) has cleared her of any potential ethical dilemmas hours before the committee postponed its vote.

The announcement arrived after the Office of Government Ethics, an agency that examines nominees’ financial disclosures and resolves potential conflicts of interest, released its long-awaited report Friday. Alexander said he wants to give each Senator on the committee time to review the documents. Ethics Director Walter M. Shaub Jr. had said a full vetting of extremely wealthy individuals, such as DeVos, could take weeks, if not months, much to the chagrin of Senate Democrats who wanted to review it before DeVos’s confirmation hearing, which took place Tuesday evening.

DeVos has also vowed to divest herself from dozens of entities in order to show she is not planning to benefit from the position of Secretary of Education.

Betsy DeVos disclosed that she and her husband own assets worth at least $580 million, and she agreed to divest from 102 entities within 90 days of her confirmation as secretary of education, according to documents released by the federal Office of Government Ethics.

Here’s the thing, though: The OGE is run by a liberal Obama donor. Numerous liberals run the office. If they cleared her, why on earth would the Democrats on the HELP Committee still oppose her?

It’s not that hard to guess: the Status Quo doesn’t want her.

Teachers unions doesn’t want her. They donate tens of thousands every year to Democrats to get them to fight school choice and education reform. They are the Status Quo, and they pay off Democrats to maintain it. School choice, however, benefits minorities and the poor most because it gives kids a fighting chance in the education world.

There is no reason to continue delaying the confirmation vote. DeVos has every qualification necessary to be the Secretary of Education, and comes in with a focus on the students, not the schools. Why on earth would that be so bad?
