Can Hillary Clinton Keep the Obama Years Going?

What a night for the Democratic National Convention. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many Democrats fired up about the America and it’s future – in a positive way, that is. They’re so happy. It’s like we’re so close to a utopia, we just need one more little step. And that step is Hillary Clinton.

It’s all about keep it going, I guess. The Hillary Years can be the Obama Years Part Two. Maybe they can try to toss in some meaningful reactions to terror attacks at home and abroad, less divisive rhetoric on the subject of race relations, and possibly even a little less moral preening. But, who am I kidding? We won’t get that.

Joe Biden and Barack Obama in particular did their jobs well. The crowds sure took to them. They had them eating out of the palms of their hands. However, no one, from Biden to Obama to Michael Bloomberg to Tim Kaine, could tell us why America should support the Hillary for president, except that it’s gonna keep what we’re doing going.

They talked so highly about the Affordable Care Act. They were in love with the Supreme Court’s decision on gay marriage. They praised themselves. Everything that they absolutely love about America right now is stuff that happened while Obama was president, and all are things Hillary had nothing to do with. There is nothing in any of the key arguments they made that would compel people to vote for her. All the good stuff seems to have been done already.

The Democrats are holding on to the recent past as a means of inspiring people. They don’t seem to have much to say about the future Hillary represents.

She’s going to break the glass ceiling! She’s tough! She’s passionate! She works hard! Okay. That’s great. But, what is she going to do? After three nights of the Democratic National Convention, we know all about Hillary’s past (as they would present it to us). But we don’t know much about Hillary’s future. The most substantive policies we’ve heard are on gun control and the wage gap.

Hillary Clinton was Senator of New York when 9/11 happened. Okay. How does that make her ready to take on the role of leading a nation on the verge of a war? How does being a woman prepare her for the role? She’s traveled the country! She’s talked to people! Nothing compelling there.

But that’s the point. This isn’t about Hillary. It’s about keeping what Obama’s got going. That’s why last night seemed to revolve so much around what happened while he was in office. It’s all about what Obama did these last seven and a half years. He’s the opening act and she is supposed to top it. But they don’t want her to. They want her to pretend to be him and perform the same act again and hope people will like it more.

The Democrats know that beyond her name and the fact that she is a woman, there is nothing earth-shattering about Hillary Clinton. They just want to be the party to elect the first female president, and do it on the heels of the first black president, and have one continue the legacy of the other.
