This afternoon, atrocious news surfaced that CBS correspondent Lara Logan had been subjected to “brutal and sustained sexual assault” while covering the celebrations in Egypt.
According to a full statement released by CBS:
On Friday February 11, the day Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down, CBS Correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a 60 MINUTES story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into a frenzy.
In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.
There will be no further comment from CBS News and Correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time.
When the news initially broke, I was on Twitter as people began talking about it. Almost everyone was shocked, appalled, and deeply sympathetic for Logan, except for one man.
That man was Nir Rosen. Rosen is a fellow at the NYU Center for Law and Security. When he realized what he said was outrageous and others began informing him of that, he deleted his worst comments. However, some were captured using a “screen grab.”

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, February 15th at 10:14PM EST (link)Cross-posting is fine with a link, but you really need to include enough of the article here at RedState that people get the gist and would follow the link for further details or to see what else you’ve written. That’s not the case here.
RedState is not meant as a gateway for directing people to content elsewhere.
The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Proportion is a good thing.
barleycorn (Diary) Tuesday, February 15th at 10:37PM EST (link)Its not clear to me why what a private individual says is worth this much attention. If the point being made is that this guy appears to be sympathetic to America’s enemies, then yes that’s a problem but then we already know the enemy is among us. However pretending that one man’s lack of compassion for another individual is stop-the-presses newsworthy is stretching it. Is he an unfeeling jerk? Apparently. Is that newsworthy? No.
When we lose the ability to freely exchange opinions on anything and everything, we lose one of our most precious rights. Mass hysteria over what one person said or did has unfortunately become a standard of our culture.
Lara Logan’s ordeal is a tragedy for her and her loved ones, but she went into a war zone knowing the risks. Was it a cowardly and evil attack by a group of men? Yes. Are women attacked like this everyday around the world? Yes. Should we all be able to discuss the subtleties of this particular crime? Yes. Should we keep this event is perspective in light of daily atrocities against humans of all types including innocent little children? Yes.
This wasn't a "free exchange" of ideas....
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Wednesday, February 16th at 12:31AM EST (link)The disgusting Rosen was saying she deserved it because of her “war” pushing during the Bush years.
Your attempt to MINIMIZE the nastiness of a lefty on Twitter to the VIOLENT RAPE of a reporter in the animalistic Middle East says more about you then about what Rosen said.
And btw for your highminded self, Lara Logans ordeal is a tragedy of ALL who report anywhere in the world to bring We The People the stories that will affect our lives.

Free speech is the linchpin of freedom
barleycorn (Diary) Wednesday, February 16th at 9:19AM EST (link)Of course Rosen’s idiotic comments very much were a “free exchange of ideas” and by pretending otherwise, you and your cohorts are trying to close down anyone who dares stray from your version of reality. Free speech is free speech, its not “speech that a majority agree with”, or “speech that is nice”, or “speech that doesn’t offend anyone”.
Your heated reply to my mild post is a text-book example of one of the many things wrong with our political discourse. By accusing me of being worse than Rosen (I assume that if someone defends my right to say what I think, that would make them still worse?) you are attempting to shut down my willingness to respond. You don’t like what I said so you just attack like a mad dog and hope I shut up. You want to silence me.
I didn’t “attempt to MINIMIZE” anything EXCEPT the news value of what one anti-American jerk said. If your hothead can’t comprehend that, well that’s just too bad for you. You apparently can’t grasp that I’m not defending WHAT he said but his right to say it ,and given that right, the utter lack of news value in his statements.
Contrary to the implication of your final paragraph, reporters are not Mother Teresa selflessly feeding and sheltering the infirm. All the reporters in Egypt are there because it is their job. The “news” is how they make their living but they don’t have to go there, and their employers don’t have to send them there. Do we really need dozens of reporters to breathlessly tell us that there’s a loud angry crowd milling around Cairo?
Here’s an idea: All the media (and here I mean US based news organs) get together and fund ONE team to go in and record what is happening. One team with a large security element. We don’t need 25 different camera angles of the same square filled with Egyptians. We don’t need 25 different Anderson Coopers excitedly reporting that there’s a whole lot of upset protesters.
You can choose to worship at the alter of the modern day “press” but I’ll not join you.

Free Speech Goes Both Ways
Repair_Man_Jack (Diary) Wednesday, February 16th at 9:48AM EST (link)If Nir Rosen seeks to behave like a King Richard, I certainly have the right to blog about what a d–k-h–d he truly is.
Mr. Obama is pretending that an economic “recovery” is underway when he knows damn well that the banking system is just blowing smoke up the shredded *** of what’s left of that economy – James Howard Kunstler
Of course it goes both ways.
barleycorn (Diary) Wednesday, February 16th at 11:10AM EST (link)Absolutely. Have at it. You can also blog about what a d-k h-d I am, but nobody will care because I’m a nobody just as Rosen is.
I never challenged anyone’s “right” to blog or post or organize a Nir Rosen is D-k H-d March. Whatever. My question was “why”. Why elevate the bloviations of some unknown jerk to the level of public discussion?
Having a Twitter account doesn’t make someone newsworthy.
Why Not?
Repair_Man_Jack (Diary) Wednesday, February 16th at 11:16AM EST (link)Shining a light on this cockroach of a man is an exceptional way to send him off on the run. Also, he’s on the faculaty of a fairly well known university. He can say what he wants, but if it’s obnoxious, and my tax money supports and amplifies his ability to be obnoxious, I deserve my crack at the SOB. As does Jaded, as does anyone else having to pick up this sleaze-bag’s bartab April 15th.

This is on par with saying... e.g. "I'm glad your mother died of cancer."
H (Diary) Wednesday, February 16th at 1:12PM EST (link)Do you include such provocative verbal sewage in “the free exchange of ideas?” From a university professor entrusted with the impressionale minds of our youngest and brightest? If so you are no better than him and I don’t understand how your RS account still stands.

barleycorn (Diary) Thursday, February 17th at 9:32AM EST (link)The level of “debate” on this thread is so childish that this will be my last post on the issue.
If you peruse my comments you will not find a single instance where I defended what Rosen said. You won’t find a single instance where I in any way rationalized what he said. I have made it abundantly clear that I consider him a jerk, a nonentity, and an enemy of this nation. At no point did I evince anything other than disgust and repulsion at his statements.
The several other posters on this tread are the moral and intellectual equivalent of a lynch mob. Any deviation from ranting about what a bastard this guy is, just increases your blood lust and redirects it toward whomever isn’t chanting as loud as you are.
As an example of just who YOU are keeping company with, there is this article on Politics Daily by Suzi Parker.
http://tinyurl.com/4loawbz
The money quote is in the last couple of paragraphs:
“Lately, it’s become much too common for comedians and pundits to criticize and taunt reporters. Conservative pundit Ann Coulter joked last week at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington that more reporters needed to be jailed. Sarah Palin often chides reporters and calls them “lame-stream media.”
Perhaps those who engage in such sneering should walk a mile or two in Logan’s combat boots. ”
This windbag’s assertion that its partially Ann Coulter’s and Sarah Palin’s fault that Lara Logan was assaulted is the intellectual twin of the hysteria being directed at me on this thread. None of you (those who have replied to my post) have actually engaged your brain. Its all emotional nonsense with no attempt to calmly consider and ponder.
Jaded’s question below about Anderson Cooper being raped is evidence of a mental state unsuitable for intelligent debate. The implication of Jaded’s question is that I wasn’t “bothered” by Rosen’s sick comments or even more disgusting, that I wasn’t “bothered” by the attack on Logan, when nothing could be further from the truth.
The tactics used by Suzi Parker on Politics Daily and by the other posters on this thread is based directly on Saul Alinsky’s Rule #13: identify, isolate, freeze and escalate. The truth doesn’t matter. Facts don’t matter. The left uses this tactic to marginalize and silence conservatives every day.
“We don’t like what barleycorn wrote. Instead of joining in the stoning of this creep he’s trying to make us think about larger issues and distracting us. So let’s accuse him of stuff he didn’t actually say and then suggest that his account should be banned.”
I’d strongly recommend reading comprehension courses for JadedByPolitics, Repair_Man_Jack, and Read Chesterton.
